FORSBERG TRADED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/article.jsp?content=20070215_191535_2880
To Nashville
-Peter Forsberg
To Philadelphia
-Scottie Upshall
-Ryan Parent
-1st round pick
-3rd round pick.
Short term - this might ('might' being the key word here) be a tremendous deal for the Preds provided that Forsberg stays healthy. With Forsberg, Sullivan, Arnott, and Kariya up front, combined with the fact that they now have two legit #1 goalies (one of which might get traded for even more forward or defensive help), the Preds are now the odds on favorite to win the cup; no question.
However - the Flyers got an amazing package for this as well. Printer and Upshall have pretty big upsides. Those added 1st and 3rd rounders are also great for an organization that is clearly rebuilding.
Personally? As a Canucks fan, I am GLAD that we didn't get Forsberg. For one thing - his health is in question. Secondly - there's a huge chance that he'll go back to Philly (or even Colorado) once the season ends (from what I hear). Looks like the Flyers were asking for quite a bit, and I'm glad that Nonis didn't bite.
VERDICT:
-Great deal for the Flyers (short and long term)
-Potentially great but potentially bad deal for Nashville. That's a lot to give up on for a guy who might not be 100% healthy and most likely won't re-sign at season's end. Anything short of winning the cup will be a disapointment for the Preds IMO.
p.s. HAPPY FLAG DAY!

Anaheim will more than likely make a huge move. They still have around $4 million+ left in cap space. Brizgalov will probably be used as trade bait. Anaheim are looking for a strong center that can give the Ducks two legit 1st lines. I'm not sure what San Jose's cap space is, but they also have two legit #1 goalies (Nabakov and Toskala). In SJ's case, it looks like they'll try and move Nabakov.
I heard rumors that the Rangers were interested in acquiring either Tkachuk or Bertuzzi. Martin Gerber will also probably be moved (more than likely to Tampa.....if Anaheim/SJ/Nashville's asking price for one of their goalies is too high, then Gerber becomes good trade bait).
Leafs might be looking to re-acquire Gary Roberts (Leafs will NEVER be sellers since they're in constant denial about being cup contenders :P).
Montreal will be interesting. I've heard a lot of Sheldon Souray rumors, but I doubt that Habs will move him. Samsonov could go if he's part of a package (maybe to SJ where he'll be re-united with Thornton).
As far as the Canucks go, Nonis has gone on record stating that he won't make a deal unless it makes sense (i.e. not selling the farm for a top player who'd be a UFA at season's end). Nonis said he wouldn't mind adding another defenseman or a center than can play with Naslund.

Even if Forsberg does get injured, Preds are still a huge contender. As for the Leafs, good God, if they hope to make it past the first round (if they even make the playoffs at all), they've got to make a big move.
Of course they won't, as Ferguson is a moron.

As for the Forsberg trade, I really like it. It gives Nashville an even better group of fowards, and without him they were already first in the west, so they should only get better. I always wants the Devils to win the cup, but if they can't Nashville would be a nice team to get the cup.

Oh man, did anybody see the Flyers/Ranger game? Knuble and Shannahan had a collision in the middle of the ice on the blue line. Neither man was looking and they nailed each other inadvertanly. Shannahan had to be taken off on a stretcher, and Knuble got a cut above his right eye, and needed some help off the ice. Knuble is going to have an x-ray. Shannahan was possibly out cold. It was a scary incident, and hopefully both player will be able to be okay.

I would say I'd like to see Nashville win the Cup, but there is talk that the franchise might be moving because they can't generate the money from Corp. Sponsors. As far as I'm concerned, with no disrespect to the players and regular fans, them winning and then moving (perhaps) in a year or two, puts a sour taste in my mouth.

I can't see Gerber being moved unless Ottawa gets a decent to solid backup goaltender in return, Ottawa is not going to take a run at the cup with a goalie tandem of Ray Emery and Kelly Guard, a strong duo is nets or Marty Brodeur is one of the keys to success in the playoffs.
I don't think there are locks in either conference.
In the West Nashville, Anaheim, San Jose and Detroit (assuming they don't choke like they seem to do every year that they don't win a cup) all have the potential to do serious damage, as do the Canucks with Luongo. I'd include Dallas too but we all know Marty Turco becomes the league's worst goalie come playoff time.
In the East Buffalo natually, but don't discount the Senators (Emery now has playoff experience and the confidance of his teammates), the Penguins (especially if they can pick up one more Defensive D-man or a scoring winger), the Devils (Marty Brodeur is inhuman).

You are completely right about Gerber. Also - Given Gerber's salary (in relation to how he's played this season), it will be tough to move him as well.
-The Canucks may not be a leading cup-contender, but they DO have all the "essential elements" in place to be a dark horse. Great goaltending, great defensive foundation, a very nice special teams (#1 PK in the league), great team chemistry, great leadership, and a respectable offense (since December....the Canucks have been a respectable offensive team....their 5th lowest GF is very misleading right now). Bottom line? There ARE teams in this league that are better than the Canucks, but whoever does ultimately beat the Canucks (if that happens) will have gone through a bloody war. The Flames and Oilers in recent years went to the cup finals, and this year's Canucks are better than both of those teams from 2004 and 2006 respectively. Be forewarned!
-Atlanta got SCHOOLED by Philly. :nono: LOL. Coburn for Zhitnik!?! Are you fucking kidding me?!? Another great move by Philly. Absolutely RETARDED move by Atlanta.
-Anaheim got a great deal from Tampa as well (they got a 1st rounder their way...some other shit went down...too lazy to post it here). Anaheim is one team that is STACKED with prospects and high end draft picks. Anaheim is almost guaranteed to bring in a big name player at the deadline. I heard rumors that they were interested in Rob Blake. Can you imagine? Pronger, Blake, AND Niedermayer all on defense? :o Brizgalov and another roster player might be moved for some help up front as well. Bottom line? As solid as the Ducks line-up is right now, they could be friggin deadly after the trade deadline. Oh yeah - and they're interested in Souray as well (meaning the Ducks MIGHT have all of Pronger, Niedermayer, Blake, and Souray). LOL, crazy!!
-The Wings still have about $5 mill left in cap space. They are in the market for Guerin, Tkachuk, and Bertuzzi (they'll only get one obviously).
-Penguins are interested in acquiring Laraque, but Phoenix's asking price is fairly high (from what I heard).
-The Canucks are the front runners for Bryan Smolinski. Smolinski's alright but as a Canuck fan, I really hope they get another defenseman (i.e. a tough 5th defenseman that can fill in on the top 4 if someone gets hurt). I wouldn't mind seeing Bryan Allen coming here again. Might not be too difficult to get him (he's a UFA at season's end).
-Although there are minor Joe Sakic rumors floating around, I HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt that he'll be moved. Ditto for Ryan Smyth.
-Belfour might be moved to Buffalo for Biron.
-Gary Roberts might head to either Toronto or Ottawa (T.O. being the more likely destination).
-Richard Zednik will most likely be moved as well.

-Roberts is on the verge of being traded to the Pens (it may happen as I type this) but apparently, his contract situation is a major mess. Roberts prefers to play in Toronto and Ottawa, but is open to Pitsburgh as well. Roberts waiving his NTC to play in Pitsburgh isn't the biggest issue apparently. There's lots of other shit that needs to be handled (things of which I don't know).
-Nabakov might get traded to the Panthers.
-Detroit and Anaheim appear to be the front-runners in the Todd Bertuzzi sweep stakes.
-Jovanovski is done for the season (injury).
-Very very small chance of Ryan Smyth and Joe Sakic being traded. Selling price is WAY too high this year (we can think moronic Atlanta for that).

By tomorrow, the Canucks will be able to offcially have Smolinski . Brent is to pair up with Ohlund again. This will pair up Salo with whoever suites up in the 6th spot.
Personally? I'm not a HUGE fan of getting Sopel back. Sopel shows flashes of brilliance, but makes too many mistakes. :-\ He's a definite upgrade over Rory Fitzpatrick however. I much rather would have seen the Canucks go after a stay-at-home physical defenseman, but oh well.

A very crazy trade deadline. Really surprised that Smyth was traded. There playoffs are WIDE open. Bruins picked up two good D men and got rid of shitty, overpaid Mara. A pretty good deadline for them. Boyes is an under achiever and was expendable.
I can't wait for the playoffs.
I'm suprised Smyth went to NYI, I figured if he was gonna be traded it would be to a powerhouse like Anaheim or something... Not to be a prick cause my team (Toronto) aren't sitting much better, but why are you looking forward to the playoffs? It's really unlikely Boston's gonna be there.
I still have faith in the B's, very skeptical faith, but still...
Also pretty glad Mara is gone. He didn't really do anything good for the team.

Why am I looking forward to the playoffs? I am looking forward to the playoffs because I am a huge hockey fan. The playoffs are unreal and even if the Bruins don't make it then that's ok. Just because my team isn't doing so hot doesn't make me hate hockey all of a sudden.

No one has ever said he was an offensive dynamo. He's a heart and soul kinda guy. He's a 30-40 goal scorer that plays hurt, fights through tough opposition, that leads by example. He reminds me very much of a Doug Gilmour type guy. Doug had better play making abilities, but he was the same way - fearless and dedicated.

Ryan Smyth isn't an "offensive machine" like Sidney Crosby or Alex Ovechkin, but I will say this:
GREAT LEADERSHIP.
This is the one area where the Islanders have lacked in ever since Mike Peca left. With Smyth coming to Long Island, the Islanders just got a lot better. Smyth's heart still might be in Edmonton, but the guy WILL give his 100% come playoff time.
Speaking of the Oil', I gotta feel for their fans. :nono: They've had a very rough year. Everything has been downhill for them ever since their Game 7 loss (i.e. Pronger requesting to be traded the VERY NEXT DAY).
p.s. On an unrelated note, I hope the Canucks meet the Wings/Bertuzzi in the 1st round. THAT will be fucking interesting.

Although that doesn't really matter, because Luongo is going to do for the Canucks what Ward did for Carolina...or Brouduer does every year for NJ
Every year it seems like there is 1 goalie come playoff time that will carry an enitre team.
Im sure regretting not taking Luongo or Broduer when I had the chance.

11 losses ( I believe) in a row for Edmonton. Yeah, moving Ryan Smyth was a good move. Is he worth 10+ wins a season? No, of course not, I doubt any one player is that big of a factor on any team. Trading him though has knocked the soul out of the team. A team that at the time before the trade were sorta still trying to make the playoffs. I guess if they get him back in the off season it'll be worth it. No one ever can deny again however that Ryan Smyth was the heart and soul of that team.

Tuuka Raask will be a great goalie in the NHL. Though I don't know if I agree to throwing him out there as our starting goalie. I would definately bring him up next year as the back up and either keep Thomas as the starter or find somebody in a trade or free angency. Let Raask slowly get into it and eventually become the number one goalie.
Our goaltending wasn't our problem this year. We just played pretty terrible overall. We need to keep our solid core group (Bergeron, Savard, Sturm, Murray, Axelsson, Kessel, Chara, Wideman, Bochenski, Ference, Kobasew, Ward) and build off of that. We really need some defence, big time. We are a really young team and it will take a year or two to really get going. I hope we make another big splash in the free agency market next year and land a solid leader. I know Chara is our captain and he did great in that role this year. I just think that we need a voice, somebody to really show this team how to win.
Kessel is going to be great next year and all of our young guys will progess, give it time. Alberts, Tenkrat, York and a few others will be gone. This will free up some cap space and allow us to pick up a few names. Also the cap is going up so look for the Bruins to make some changes. Also I wouldn't mind seeing Lewis out on his ass. Fire him now and go after Pat Burns.

I'm not looking to bring up Raask right away either. I agree with you about pretty much everything else. We another offensive leader to put the young lines together like Savard did. Hopefully we make some moves on defense this off-season that don't end up sucking, but I think that might also come from better defensive coaching.

Gotta tell you though, the Devils have had key injuries and those injured guys had been returning, they had been looking extra good again. Thing is, this isn't new for Lou. I think the Devils have had 7 coaching changes since 2000. That's clearly too many, but they've also had success. Not so sure this time though, I think the reasons aren't fully being told.

I would agree that not all the reasons are being fully told, but at the same time it's hard to argue with Lou because he wins, even if he does it peculiar ways sometimes.
I am a Devils fan, and you are right, they had some injuries and were playing with 6 or 7 rookies in the lineup, but they have won four of five with Elias and Madden, and now Gionta finally being back. Lou did a great job coaching last year so hopefully he can do the same this year.

People are already questioning his decision. I am the biggest Devils fan around, and even I question the logic behind the move. But Lou wins, which is why many people give him a pass. If he wins, it will be a great move, and if he doesn't it will be the opposite.
