Damn. I'm making a really early prediction at the Giants' season-opening 53-man roster, and I just realized how big of a logjam there is at LB.
Bulluck, Boley, Sintim, Goff, and Dillard are locks. Coughlin usually takes at least 7 LB, sometimes even 8 (which I think is a bit much). Blackburn, Kehl, and Wilkinson could all potentially make it, but that would leave no room for rookie Adrian Tracy, and Coughlin tends to get his late-round rookie LBs onto the team to play special teams. And I'm not even counting Zak DeOssie, who is technically a LB but will only play as the long snapper. Something's gotta give.

RIP Jets' 2010 season
Darrelle Revis is incredibly overrated. I mean, the Jets will be perfectly fine without him. BTW. You lost to the Colts with him. Manning still destroyed your defense in the 2nd half. I'm pretty sure the Jets should spend there money elsewhere.

I keep hearing rumors of a sign and trade with the Ravens and Jets for Revis since the Ravens are absolutely DESPERATE for a CB but I have no idea who the Ravens could trade that would get them Revis, but its an interesting rumor. The Ravens do have McGahee/McClain at RB that are tradeable but the Jets dont need RBs. Troy Smith is also available..
If they got Revis, I think you could say book em to the Super Bowl because the only weakness last year on defense was the CBs getting beat like drums and flagged every other play for PI.

Weeks ago Dez refused to carry any vets pads, then Roy said the issue wasn't a big deal but hinted at making Dez pay more for the traditional receivers meal.
Today Dez brings all the WRs new Jordan sneakers but got Roy the wrong size by accident. Roy responded by saying it also didn't matter but he did feel a bit more thirsty and hungry.

There's no way Brett Favre should be allowed to get away with what he does every year now. This is the biggest case of ONE player making it obvious he feels he is bigger than the team, and both the Jets and Vikings have fallen prey to this.
When the Green Bay thing went down, at first I was like "Wow, they should've let him take as long as he needed", but now it's just ridiculous.
Supreme Olajuwon
08-18-2010, 02:29 AM
What is he getting away with? The Vikings decide whether or not Favre plays. ESPN decides how to sensationalize the same story every year. Don't really see how any of this is Favre getting away with anything.

08-18-2010, 02:33 AM
All players have been in training camp, doing the drills, working their butts off, they had a preseason game...
...the guys who have stepped up as quarterbacks have been working hard...
...and now all of a sudden Brett Favre decides to come in, and automatically those guys are no longer even an option to start...'cause Favre is the starter. So it's like "Thanks for ur hard work, ur dedication, and the time u have spent over the last few weeks getting ready. Favre will take over now". It's not fair.
This is how Favre had those Vikings players who went to see him, as well as the whole Vikings organization:

Favre isn't the first veteran to think over retirement only to come out of it right in the middle of training camp. Shit he isn't even the first player to do it this year.
I do agree he could go about things a bit differently but at this point he is just a football player that people are going to hate no matter what he does.
Aguakate
08-19-2010, 03:18 AM
The problem isn't him retiring and then thinking it over and coming back...the problem is he's done it for 3 YEARS IN A ROW.
And it's unfair to the other players in the team (first the Jets, now Vikings), because they have been busting their butts at training camp, working hard, giving their all, while Brett acts like a diva and acts all hard so that they (the team and the players) practically beg him to come back. The guy who has been practicing as quarterback for the Vikings all of a sudden finds himself on the bench, because Favre decided to come back. The weeks he's been working hard, practicing, etc? Forget about it. Brett's back, so, thanks for nothing, Favre will take over.
That is unfair. Favre makes himself bigger than the team and his teammates, and the teams cater to him.
Skippord
08-19-2010, 03:28 AM

Aguakate
08-19-2010, 03:41 AM
...So u really expect players to come out and say they don't agree with the situation?
Tarvaris Jackson, who would've been the starter had Favre retired, said this:
"Honestly, I really don't care," Jackson said. "I feel like if my number is called I'll be ready and I'm going to continue to try and work hard and get better. That's all I can do. My teammates, that's their prerogative. I can't really control that. I'm just going to do my part."
You can clearly see he feels bad. When he says "My teammates, that's their prerogative", he's talking about how 3 Vikings players went to Brett's house and "talked him into staying".
It sucks.

Lagarrette Blount apparently missed his calling (http://blog.oregonlive.com/nfl/2010/08/reports_legarrette_blount_form.html) as a professional boxer.
Also learned a little tidbit of a new rule I didnt know about:
"It's not like they hit me so hard my helmet got knocked off," Blount said. "They kept knocking my helmet off. I lowered my shoulder and they reached around the back of my head and pulled my helmet off.
"When somebody loses their helmet, now the play is dead," Blount said, referring to a new NFL rule going into effect this season that stops a play when a player's helmet comes off. "It's supposed to die.
Its only if the ball carrier loses their helmet though..everyone else is free to lose theirs as they wish I guess. Maybe 85 will strap his helmet on a bit tighter this year.

The two highlights of the Ravens win over the Redskins were the 51 yard fake punt and the 1 yard TD run by McGahee followed up by the Redskins band playing "Hail to the Redskins"..I guess they figure this year it'll be better if they play the song after the Redskins give up a TD then when they score one..

Last time he carried the ball he was running behind my punishing blocks!!!!!
Seriously though I think he might have a shot to make it, you gotta think they are gonna take 4 backs at least. Rice, McClain & McGahee are the shoe-ins I'm guessing. Rest are toss ups?
Plus if he didn't have a shot why would they bring him in 3 seconds after the draft ended and change his position? Why even waste the time?

He has a strong leg, but it only shows up on every other punt. The rest are line drives. I don't get it.
Wouldn't shock me at all if the Giants went ahead and grabbed a veteran punter on the final cutdown day. So this new rule about the refs spotting the ball and having to be in position before the snap can happen.
Thoughts? Obviously I think it is a bad thing, but what are everyone else's opinions? I feel they should just give that ref a helmet or something, or put some more athletic refs in that position. The refs should adapt to the game, not the game adapts to the refs. Obviously, Manning was testing it and pushing his luck that game, but for good reason IMO. Any other team that relies even somewhat on the no-huddle should be up in arms about this change, and people shouldn't simply agree with the change because it hurts a team that uses it against them.
Dunno, I never really saw too many refs getting injured from that position regardless, so it almost seems like nobody really thought about it very hard when they proposed the idea.
McLegend
08-28-2010, 05:30 PM
Yeah I think that new rule is pretty dumb. I'm all for safety of any kind, but you can't intentionally slow down the game like that.
Emperor Smeat
08-28-2010, 08:52 PM
Is the new rule just for the spotter ref since I thought a snap can't occur until he moves away from the scrimmage spot or else he would be blocking someone on the line?
Requiem
08-28-2010, 11:51 PM
The new rule states that the snap can't occur until the spotting ref is in position behind the farthest offensive player. Basically forces the QB to take his eyes off the defense to see if he can snap the ball or not. Either look over his shoulder, or look to a sideline where a ref stands to give the signal.
It is all based on how fast the ref can get back there, and in the game against Green Bay, the ref took his fucking time a couple times. It isn't that he has to be out of the way.. it's that he has to be in a certain position a certain distance away now, which completely throws off the pace of the game. That 5 yard penalty for snapping half a second early can completely stop the game and throw off a team's momentum, especially in the redzone.
Within the 2 minute mark, he goes to the old spot like normal on the defensive side. At least, that's how I understand the rule. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Emperor Smeat
08-29-2010, 12:58 AM
Didn't realize the new rule now states a specific distance and spot since now it makes things more complicated than it should be. Before the ref just had to spot the ball and then be out of the line so as to not block anyone on either side.
I didn't watch the Colts-Packers preseason game so I never saw the problem Manning was having although if the spotter ref is too slow deliberately then it is his fault based on the new rule.
Everyone is quick to chalk this up to Colts whining, but it's going to be increibly funny when someone is down 21 points trying make a rally in the 4th quarter and they lose about a minute or so of time because they ref takes forever to spot the ball. Hurry up offense is null and void basically. I'm not sure what the hell is gunna happen when a team has no timeouts and is trying to get in feild goal range and then spike the ball.
Cant wait!!!!

Yeah, I don't see how they can't tweak the rule. Maybe if the NFL adjusts the rule so that the ball can be snapped once the umpire has the ball down and starts backpedaling to his spot? To keep the rule as is would have to big of an impact on the integrity of the game in my opinion. If teams have to wait until the ump gets 10-15 yards behind the LOS, that's just stupid.

Since I'm bored, I'm gonna try and guess the Giants' roster after tomorrow's cuts. Most of these guys are no-brainers, but there are still some interesting choices to make.
QB (2): Eli Manning, Rhett Bomar
RB (4): Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jacobs, DJ Ware, Andre Brown
FB (1): Madison Hedgecock
WR (6): Steve Smith, Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham, Ramses Barden, Derek Hagan, Victor Cruz
TE (3): Kevin Boss, Travis Beckum, Bear Pascoe
OL (9): David Diehl, Rich Seubert, Shaun O’Hara, Chris Snee, Kareem McKenzie, Shawn Andrews, William Beatty, Mitch Petrus, Adam Koets
DE (5): Justin Tuck, Mathias Kiwanuka, Osi Umenyiora, Jason Pierre-Paul, Dave Tollefson
DT (5): Barry Cofield, Chris Canty, Linval Joseph, Rocky Bernard, Jay Alford
LB (7): Keith Bulluck, Michael Boley, Clint Sintim, Jonathan Goff, Phillip Dillard, Zak DeOssie, Gerris Wilkinson
CB (5): Corey Webster, Terrell Thomas, Aaron Ross, Bruce Johnson, DJ Johnson
S (4): Kenny Phillips, Antrel Rolle, Deon Grant, Michael Johnson
K (1): Lawrence Tynes
P (1): Matt Dodge
The main notable cuts are Guy Whimper, Bryan Kehl, and Chase Blackburn. I gotta think Blackburn would have made it if he hadn't gotten injured. That being said, if it turns out he'll be ready within 2-3 weeks he could still make the squad. But I'm gonna guess his injury is more serious than that, and Wilkinson had a good camp.
I'd say that Koets and Alford are the two guys next up on the chopping block if the Giants get a veteran backup QB. The Giants probably won't waive Bomar and risk losing him, so someone else will have to go.
I could also see a released CB from another team being brought in and replacing DJ Johnson.

Definitely gonna be picking someone up off of waivers. Pascoe had a great name :(

Jay Alford cut. Pretty surprising. The first from the 2007 draft class to be cut.
At least I'll always remember him for this:

He made the mistake of trashing the starting QB of the team and then the coach. Blamed the coach for hating him because of off-field reasons (aka him being a celebrity) instead of him realizing he is a mediocre NFL QB in abilities.
Arizona wanted to at least trade him to get something of value back but he decided on Monday to "trash" the team to the press.

I still think the roster will be tweaked slightly before next week, namely getting another TE. Beckum is always hurt and isn't really a TE anyway.

Troy Smith is gone from the Ravens too.
2 former Heisman winners cut on the same day. Pretty sure the credibility of the Heisman has taken a nosedive over the last couple of years in terms of NFL potential.
Im gonna call it the curse of Barry Sanders.

wtf at cutting Brandstater and sticking with Painter. Don't get what good the preseason was at all. Like, they got a look at him.. he did better than a player who had been with the team for 1 year. They kept talking about how Painter had the experience of already 'being in the know' of how things worked on the team, but he put up a mediocre performance in pre-season for being so knowing.
I get the whole 'sticking to your guns' thing, and not wanting it to look like they dropped him just because of the situation he was put in last season, but come on. He's only been with the team for 1 season, so there shouldn't be any sort of undying feelings of loyalty to him.

Fuck, Sharper is def on the PUP (with LB Clint Imgram) but Jonathon Cassillas, who had been a BEAST this preseason replacing Fajita at OLB is now on IR..

Revis/Jets agree to deal in principle according to Adam Schefter on Twitter.
From Revis' Twitter:
it not has only been hard on u guys but it has for me too. I just want to tell yall that I'm sorry for this process and I can't wait to get back on the field.
Hopefully it'll make it into Hard Knocks.

Donnie Avery hasn't really ever done shit for us anyway, not that big of a hit. Just landed Mark Clayton. Laurent Robinson and Brandon Gibson are gonna turn some heads this year. I feel good about this season.
