![]() Black bandana? Check. Eye patch? Check. Sleeveless jean shirt (tucked into jeans)? Check. Clashing belt? Check. Bret had to play a character. Hulk Hogan was Hulk Hogan no matter what the script, scene or weather called for. And for that reason, Bret will always be a tier below whatever tier Hogan is on. |

Bret Hart was a big draw internationally but within the US, he wasn't much of a draw. But he was still WWE's biggest draw for a few years. Hogan, Austin, The Rock, Flair, Savage are all on a level Bret Hart. I'd put Bret Hart in the same league as HBK, but he was always a bigger draw than HBK, but I don't know if it's a big enough difference for him to be considered in a tier above him. |

7-8 range for today and around 8-9 in terms of actual in-ring skills compared to most main event quality wrestlers. The whole US vs Canada feud during the mid to late 1990s ended up hurting his marketability in the US but same could be said of HBK in Canada during the time.
10 during his era in the WWF regardless how low or bad the WWF was because he fit perfectly against the more show-boating style of HBK. He still is worthy of 2nd tier star status after all the really big names but HBK moved into 1st tier due to a longer career and after his return back to wrestling. |

I have never met an american non-wrestling fan who knows who Bret is. The question is "how big of a star was he?" not "how good of a wrestler/performer do you think he was?"
That being said...in the U.S. he's a 6. Canada he's a 9.5. |

Bret was great in the ring and able to get over pretty well so I'd say 7 maybe an 8 at certain points in his career, but by no means was he EVER at the level of Hogan or any of the others listed.

For Christ's sake! I said this on the first page, but he was in the Simpsons!!! He wouldn't have appeared in The Simpsons if they didn't think people wouldn't know who he was. That should tell you all you need to know about how big of a draw he was back in the 90's.

Which goes back to what I originally said. Bret was the top guy at the lowest time. But even at it's lowest time, WWF was still a world-wide company, therefore people knew who Bret Hart was.
Otherwise Hogan would have been in the Simpsons, probably jobbing everyone out. |

I think people subconsciously take Bret down a notch on the ratings scale every time he shows up on t.v. in a t-shirt and G-Unit jean shorts.

Or Nash Bridges.
![]() Lonesome Dove is the highest grossing television series of our lifetime, and Bret's appearance were the all-time highest rated with a whopping 56.1 rating. Hard to believe, I know. |

I don't know about post-2002, but in the mid 90s, Bret was definitely a bigger draw than HBK. There is no denying that. When HBK was champion in 1996 and Bret was off TV, that's when many people started watching WCW. Of course, a lot of this can also be attributed to the NWO starting up around then, but HBK's girly gimmick turned off many male viewers, which is WWE's target audience.

Anyway post 2002 sure fine, but Bret's head was jello by then. But before then Bret and HBK were both on top during the exact same era. And here's the big thing Bret Hart is probably one of the biggest international draws of all time. |

You're perfectly right in saying that Bret played his part in the development of Austin but I would rank the 96 KOTR promo and the first Stunner on Vince as being of far greater importance in shaping the man who became Stone Cold Steve Austin. |

To be fair I think the only real thing either HBK or Bret played in setting the tone for the Attitude Era was Montreal. Bret was out of the picture by the end of 97 amd HBK was gone only a few months later. Then it was Austin/Rock/HHH's DX (The DX most people are going to remember more IMO)/McMahon from there on in. |

Curious about where all this knowledge about drawing power is coming from.
I give him 8. And it's all from his wrestling. I can't give him a 10. He is the only wrestler I would rate this high on wrestling skills alone. I would give him a 9 if he weren't the victim of some unfortunate circumstances. When wrestling evolves beyond you, it does you no favors to go to a company who drops the ball with you, have your family start dropping dead and have career-ending strokes. Had Hart more time, he might have surprised people and been able to evolve himself. But nobody knows now. I save the tens for those who are the performers, the ones who can ignite the crowd and use the ability to create drama. Although a lot of these tens are great wrestlers, some of them aren't; moreover, none of them were as good as Bret in the ring. In his league, yes, plenty were. But none as good. |

He's an easy 9.5 for when he was in his prime.
