so at the end of the day, for all their championing of how they're not here to screw the consumers like evil giant microsoft, sony's pretty much here to screw the consumers too, right

like, all this music unlimited/no usb/etc stuff - is basically the only thing that the ps4 has over the xbox one that it operates in 1080 as opposed to 720? i read somewhere that xbone would graphically only run at 720p or i or whatever, so i was starting to lean towards the ps4 because if this gen lasts as long as the current, then i'll have to be happy with the graphics for that length of time.


if they're graphically indistinguishable, i think i might stick with an xbox

The big question is how much will it matter in the long run. Keep in mind there's every possibility developers will build both versions with the same deal in mind, effectively putting only the effort necessary for the inferior graphical version. Of course, the publishers were the ones pushing graphics above all, so maybe the Bone gets shunned in the longer run, or simply gets weaker (at least, graphically) ports.

But yes, the primary difference right now appears to be that one outputs in 1080p natively and the other appears to have problems with it.

Also, there have been complaints of stuttering and framerate issues when the PS4 does 1080p, so it may not be all it's cracked up to be.

And I'd appreciate it if people remember this in a week's time when I say something less than favourable about the Xbone or Microsoft and they are tempted to whine I'm jsut hatin' on the unit.

Of course, my PC will play at higher than 1080p resolution with solid framerate at or around 60 fps (which is all my dated monitor will support anyway) and I can even keep my 360 controllers for the time being, so I was never particularly in the PS4's corner either, but....

The differences are more and more looking to be nil.

do we know if Microsoft is planning on implementing backwards compatibility down the road a la the ps4? or are they adamant it's not going to happen?

see, my main issues with outright going the ps4 is that I honestly prefer the xbox controller, which is a big part of the play experience, obviously, and my missus is a fan of the fable series, which is xb-exclusive

backwards compatibility isn't actually so much an issue for the xb on my end anyway as I have a working 360; the reason it seems advantageous for sony, to me, comes down to being able to play games such as the last of us and other ps3 exclusives I missed this generation (not gonna buy a ps3 though, or would or prefer not to)

Currently in doubt after Microsoft stated it won't be occurring anytime soon and hinted it might not be cloud-based if it does arrive.

Both good reasons to go PC.

Anyway, as SM has covered, there doesn't appear to be plans for BC. I wouldn't hold my breath on it, anyway.

Honestly, if you haven't figured out that launch consoles will have issues, I don't know how you cross the street without being hit by cars. Multiple cars, because pattern recognition clearly isn't your forte.

Do Sony televisions have launch issues? I don't recall my day 1 PS2 having launch issues, or the ps3, or gamecube. The launch issue stigma comes from one console in the past 30 years of gaming:the Xbox 360. Don't act like this is something well rooted into console gaming history.

You're talking to a person who has purchased almost all day 1 hardware, both wise (super nes) and unwise (Saturn and 32x), and never once have I had or heard of batch launch issues on consoles. Hell, my launch day 360 didn't even shit out on me once, despite the large complaint of the RRoD.

I'll give you the disc read errors, because I did forget about that, but those other issues didn't prevent the operation of the system. I have never heard of this ps1 disc reading issue though.

KK is on the money here, there has been a history of console launch problems that has happened enough for me to never consider getting a console at launch ever. I'm happy you didn't run into these issues, but it's well documented.

On the line about Day 1ers deserving it, Heisenberg also hit the note I was on that there's a early adoption culture for certain items that seem ridiculous and can only be because of the same attitude the makes people post "First" in gaming article comment sections. When we get software day one, at least that's because we know others will and we wanna be where the party is; big get togethers and such. This is a time in gaming where there's not quite an urgency to jump next-gen, with iffy launch libraries on both consoles to be honest. Add to that the most annoyingly pathetic console fanboy war in... ever. I kind of want these people to have hardware problems. I don't mind people spending money stupidly to have issues after the fact. Makes me feel good.

But if your luck stands I'm hoping you yourself don't have any issues, I didn't mean for you specifically to have issues. Hell, I even noted that I rather things work out. I don't want Sony or Microsoft to fail or anything. I want an Xbox One. Just not at launch.

A friend of mine just said this to me as he has one preordered and has done nothing but rave about how great its gonne be, etc. I told him this usually happens with a console launch and that maybe his won't have issues.

He's just recently gotten into gaming so he wasn't aware of the 360's issues at launch, the PS2's, etc.

I'm also holding out for an XBox One, but I wanna see how they do the first year before I'll buy one.

The PS4 launch titles are nothing to rave about, with the best ones being multi-platform, and the games themselves looking just a tad above the current gen.

The One, on the other hand, easily has the stronger first party launch titles in Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct, and Ryse.

Here's my crossroads...from a games standpoint, the One easily has my attention, but in terms of multiplayer, almost all my friends 'irl' have gone Playstation, and most of my Live play is with the TPWW community, which I feel is pretty fragmented.

Really? I've been fairly hype about Titanfall, Battlefield 4, Killer Instinct, PS4 and X1's new approach to indy games, and expanded digital marketplaces. I want an Xbox One (again, I say). I've had a very balanced view where I give credit or strikes where due. If I seem to give more strikes than credit, sorry if it seems that way.

Don't expect me to be blindfully optimistic, but I won't be blindfully critical at least. I call it how I see it. My blog has posts vilifying or blasting some stuff from next gen, but it also gets hype for next gen and even defended certain DLC practices. I don't wanna come off as pro/anti-consumer or pro/anti-corporation. I'm just a fucking gamer.

I think you just notice the critical stuff more, there's plenty examples of me being hype and hopeful in this forum.

And sorry, Ryse and Dead Rising 3 aren't doing shit next-gen or even generally progressive. They don't even need to be innovative, just present something cool. If Ryse was (and very well could have been) a 360 title, without the hoopla of it being a next-gen launch title, it would have went under everybody's radar in this forum. I guarantee this. I see hype for that game and wonder; 'when did this kind of shit spark any interest in the past?' It forces me to conclude it's only because it's a next gen title and not due to its merits as a game.

And the Dead Rising series never interested me in particular, but DR3 seems especially paint-by-numbers for a next-gen launch title. Again, where was this level of hype for DR2 and its expansions? Add to that the altered presentation going for the old 'gritty' filter and shit. Not a fan of that movement.

If you want me to write longer posts about what I like I can certainly do that.

To be fair, MS and Sony haven't really done anything to be hyped about next-gen. You've got some shooty shooty bang bangs on both formats, along with some brm brm driving and God of War: Rome. Shame Knack reviewed so horribly. Resogun is probably the only thing worth playing so far.

I know, I know, launch lineups suck, but at least they announced things to look forward to the last times. Sony have got Infamous and, erm... Deep Down I guess? MS has got fuck all (apart from the inferior version of Titanfall) so I'll quite happily sit back and wait a couple of price drops at this rate, or not bother if MGSV comes to PC.
