Its ridiculously big and you're meant to be able to see it from absolutely miles away when its lit up.

It's also makes it recognisable and gives it something so you recognise it as a landmark when you're in London. "Oh thers Big Ben, oh theres Buckingham Palace, oh theres the Wembley Arch" etc.
