It was a work all the way; one of Russo's infamous work-shoots meant to "trick" the internet wrestling fans, appease Hogan (who didn't want to do the clean job) and, in fact, some of the other wrestlers. The idea was that Hogan didn't want to do the job and but "had to," so he laid down for Sting, then left the arena, apparently in a huff. russo and hogan planned the whole thing out beforehand, and they were going to have Hogan return as a sort of anti-hero who's "not part" of WCW. the problem was that they never mentioned it on television, and by the time Hogan was ready to return, the face of WCW had drastically changed (February 2000) and Hogan became embroiled in the New Blood vs. Millionaires Club angle instead.

When Hogan didn't want to do the job to Jarrett at Bash at the Beach, they decided to do pretty much the same thing, only this time, Russo swerved Hogan and cut that scathing promo.
