I'm guessing the usual worked shoot, swerve etc WcW nonsense that made many a fan switch channels to Raw to watch something that made sense.

It was a work all the way; one of Russo's infamous work-shoots meant to "trick" the internet wrestling fans, appease Hogan (who didn't want to do the clean job) and, in fact, some of the other wrestlers. The idea was that Hogan didn't want to do the job and but "had to," so he laid down for Sting, then left the arena, apparently in a huff. russo and hogan planned the whole thing out beforehand, and they were going to have Hogan return as a sort of anti-hero who's "not part" of WCW. the problem was that they never mentioned it on television, and by the time Hogan was ready to return, the face of WCW had drastically changed (February 2000) and Hogan became embroiled in the New Blood vs. Millionaires Club angle instead.
When Hogan didn't want to do the job to Jarrett at Bash at the Beach, they decided to do pretty much the same thing, only this time, Russo swerved Hogan and cut that scathing promo. |

Right after that Goldberg beat Sid for the US title, then minutes later Sting for the WCW World Title. The World Title win was voided the next night, minutes before he lost the US title to Bret Hart, who he then teamed with to win the World Tag Team Titles for a week before they lost them to Hall & Nash.
TNA isn't quite that bad yet. |

I honestly do miss some parts of late WCW. Kronik, Jindrak & O'Haire before New Blood, Booker T in his prime and winning, Sting vs. Vampiro in particular and Vampiro in general, Lance Storm.
But the longer it continued the worse it got. Even things that made sense in theory were screwed up in practice, like the New Blood, which featured such up and comers as Shane Douglas and Scott Steiner. Not to mention the Cruiserweight Tag Team divison, which actually existed. |

Russo- where gonna have two of our biggest draws booked in one of our biggest matches of the year and have Hogan come out and lie down in a "plot twist" Ted Turner- That makes no sense and it's gonna piss off all our loyal fans.... WE'LL DO IT. |

Ted Turner didn't really have any involvement in WCW, especially later. He left it to itself, for better or worse.

I always enjoyed Sting/Goldberg matches. Goldberg always looked like he was ready to totally destroy Sting, but Sting had that "main eventer" feel that made it look like he'd stand a chance.
Could just be that at that time they were two of WCW's biggest stars... |
