Not in the way that people generally interpret its meaning. Not in my book, anyway. As much as it may make us feel better labeling him as evil, I just don't see it that way.
Insane? Delusional? Narcissistic? Absolutely... To me, I see "evil" acts as people responding to fear and impulse in a terribly irresponsible and destructive way. To imply somebody is evil means that A) they are sane and rational and B) that their only goal is to cause massive human suffering or destruction. I do believe that, in Hitler's eyes, what he was doing was just and necessary. Even if deep down he knew this not to be true, the subconscious brain has a way of convincing the conscious self that its actions are somehow justified. I believe that those who commit "evil" acts are terribly misguided, weak, and at the mercy of their own subconscious and natural impulses (some of which can be naturally present through genetics or early trauma) To label an individual as evil is pure reductionism in my eyes. |
