LT to Draw, RT to shoot. You want to fill the meter faster/fuller than your opponent, not sure which. I alsways shoot for the disarm, and usually can get things right with a single shot, so I'm not entirely sure if you have to top it, or what.

It's funny, because it made sense to me that it would be red=good, white=bad. I'm not sure if I'm alone there, but I figured I'd mention it since it's counter-intuitive in my book. |

We should all get together in a private free roam, and do a King of the Hill type deal on the roof of this building in Blackwater. I used this rooftop to get my Wanted challenges and stuff, and found it pretty fun when this guy tried his hardest to kill me, since there is only 1 ladder to get up there. There is also another rooftop a block or two away that is in range to shoot who(m)ever is up there. I think this could be a lot of fun.
The building is across the street from the train station and has a Welcome to Blackwater banner. |

I've played this a bit since the weekend. It's got a great atmosphere and presentation, really good package all round but the gameplay is pretty disappointing. It really is just GTA in the Wild West. I think that works better as a concept than the original setting but it's tired as a gameplay format. It's still "go here, cut scene, take a while to get there and have a chat along the way, cut scene, do this, shoot everyone, go back, cut scene." There's a lot of ropey stuff that is familiar to GTA as well, like the "super-imposed" feeling of the character on the environment, some annoyance with the 3rd person perspective, horses being novel forms of cars rather than behaving like actual horses. The scale is impressive, but spending 90% of the game running along barren roads to get anywhere is a poor pay-off.
I appreciate all the work that has gone into it and it's enjoyable, but it's not no where near as absorbing as Fallout 3 was. |

Must agree with ECG on one thing, its boring as all get oyt riding from point A to point B.
And dying randomly and having to run/ride back to where you died from a town is a bit World of Warcraftish in nature. Still love the game though. |

Starting to feel the same way as ECG and FA. The game does a good job of pulling you into its world, and making you feel like you are really in the wild west. The only problem is rip away that, and you have GTA with out any new features. Actually I say GTAIV had better missions, and gameplay. I can't get myself to play this at all hardly after beating it. Which is weird, because I thought I would surely wanna go back through and do an outlaw playthrough. Just not feeling it anymore. Actually would have to say I enjoyed Alan Wake more than this.

Yes I know about fast travel. I think you missed the point. I explained that the nature of the missions is formulaic and repetitive, especially considering it's exactly the same as GTA going back ten years now.
I didn't expect anything. I just don't think the gameplay lives up to the presentation. I did think the game may be an absorbing experience, but it's simply not. In fact it feels like a chore sometimes. The reference to Fallout 3 is down to the similar attempt at scale and a barren, hostile environment. It's not the RPG element that absorbed me in Fallout 3, but the seemingly endless detail and encounters possible. Red Dead Redemption does want to emulate that but the little encounters quickly become tiresome because (a) you've seen them all pretty quickly and (b) the side missions are exactly the same i.e. go here, talk to him, go back again. Rock Star are obviously good at tarting games up but their gameplay formula is massively tired. |

Now I could be wrong, but there are only so many game play elements you can have, so many stories you can tell. I think unless someone truely genious comes around and works out a completely unthought of story, all we are working on is improving everything around the game play.

The gameplay and mission design is EXACTLY the same as in GTA. I stopped playing GTA4 after maybe an hour or two. I'm still playing this because the world and story they've created is interesting enough to put up with the gameplay to go further in, but the missions are dangerously close to boring. I am hoping things get more interesting in terms of missions as time goes on. I think a 1st person perspective may even have made the gameplay better just because of the effect on combat.

I just don't get the complaints about one being so similar to another, when the same comparisons could be drawn between FO3 and Oblivion. FO3 wasn't an improvement on that game at all, and they were more similar in feel/gameplay than RDR is to GTA, IMO. FO3 was an extremely lazily developed game, IMO. It lacks polish.
What I'm saying is... why complain that one game is too similar to another, and then say "But this game was great" when it did the exact same thing you're accusing the other of? I just find RDR to be a far better attempt at 'using something that works', than the other did. |
