I went with The Rock, but this was one hell of a tough round.
Both men are amazing at what they do, and they both have their strengths and weaknesses. Bret was a huge part of my childhood growing up as a wrestling fan, and that picture used for him made it tough to vote against him, but The Rock just has THAT electricity that makes you wanna watch him. For the record though, Rock's Sharpshooter was always God-awful.

Tough choice, but had to go with Bret on this one. Rock was great, but his matches were way to predictable too many times.

Rock matches may have gotten to a paint-by-numbers status over the years because of how over those big spots became.
As far as his performance in the ring, I think it can be a bit understated. He brought an energy and pace to the match that was very exciting. His matches were almost always intense and entertaining. He was not the greatest wrestler of alltime from bell to bell, but he was a great storyteller. Perhaps a lot of this, and his slew of great matches, are a result of his peers as well. He had the advantage of working with a pool of guys who could all do great things. He also wrestled at a time where the crowd was hotter than ever. He had amazing crowd control, and a rabid crowd can be an x-factor in a match. I think that added a lot to his matches where he may have lacked in other departments. I recall hearing Benoit talk about how he watched The Rock wrestle from WCW, and wondered to himself how good he really was in the ring or not. He said he stepped into the ring with him the first time and after that he said "wow this guy can go." That's just one man's opinion, but I always sort of felt like Rock had a lot of skills that may have been overshadowed by the style WWF likely prefered he work, or the limitations he had. I don't think The Rock was near Bret's league in terms of the bell to bell performance, but I also don't feel comfortable writing him off. These two probably rank close to eachother in my pantheon of favorite wrestlers. I was never the biggest mark for either of them, but I also have always enjoyed both. I think both are great and during their peaks, I was definitely way into their work. I never really became on of the disciples of either though. It seems as these two guys have faithful legions on here, almost moresoe than any other two wrestlers. What I enjoy from both wrestlers are pretty different things, but comes out pretty equal in the end. I am going to go with Bret here, but at different points I could probably swing it in the Rock's favor. |

I think the rosters at the time each peaked are part of the reason I'm not all over the Rocky bandwagon. Like when Bret was the man, it was him and HBK. Those were the guys, and everyone else was a step down.
With Rock, he was great, but he wasn't on Austin or Angle or even Benoit's level in the ring. Those to me were the elite of the elite during Rock's peak. And then you've got Jericho, Eddie, and Triple H who were all better in the ring than Rock too. So I dunno, not really Rock's fault but it definitely weighs in the decision for me. |

I went with Bret, a decision i found impossibly hard to make.
But at the end of the day, I prefer Hart's style to The Rock's. It's so close it just came to the fact I'd rather watch a technical match than a brawl. |

Bret Hart is a jam up guy, but I voted for The Rock on a slight margin. I was never really a huge fan of either guy but I appreciate their very differant skill sets and how they both played to their strengths.

Ugh, fuck off with this Bret Hart shit. Great wrestler, terrible draw, one of the lowest rated WWF champs ever. Rock is leaps and bounds better.

Yeah, Bret never drew a dime did he?
![]() The Rock never would have made it when Bret was at his best because people cared more about the actual wrestling back then. Rock would have been upper midcard at best. And I say this being a HUGE Rock mark. |

Bret was a low draw because he was stuck wrestling people like Kevin Nash.

Bret was just charismatic in a different way than the Rock was. I appreciate both guys but I voted Rock simply because I grew up watching him more than I grew up watching Bret. I started watching wrestling while Bret was still around (probably started around WM 13) but I got to see the evolution of The Rock as it was happening.

There was a comment made here stating that Brett was better because he was in his prime during a down time in the WWF. Rock shined because he had so much talent around him.
Now again, I am not taking this time to shit on Brett (there's plenty of time for that). I will say that when you are in a talent filled company, and you are still able to stand out, it means more to me. Rock was an all star on a championship Roster in the Attitude Era. Every move he did had people on their feet. That attributes to the paint by numbers routine, it wasn't like he was Goldberg in the ring (No sell, Spear, Jackhammer). His in ring storytelling was second to none! I think we're splitting hairs here, and I definitely think that it's a travesty that neither of these HOF'ers aren't BW HOF'ers. |

Hart had Hogan, Nash , HBK, Sid, Taker in the company when he main evented so the draws were there.

I've been thinking about this real hard.
There's no doubt that Bret was the better "wrestler" in the pure sense of that word (IE, ring ability) There is also no doubt that The Rock was the better "entertainer". So I have to boil it down and look at each man... and judge them on how much entertainment and enjoyment they have given me personally over the years. Using that criteria... I think Bret Hart gets the slight nod over The Rock here for me. That being said, I am going to ignore that and vote The Rock anyways, because he should be in the HoF. Bret will be back. |

The Rock was definitely entertaining and fun to watch. He was charismatic and a great mic worker. He gave some of the greatest interviews. He put on some great matches, like his "I Quit" match with Mankind at Royal Rumble 1999 and his match with Stone Cold at Wrestlemania XV. I don't take into account his "paint by numbers" wrestling matches or lack of technical wrestling or however you want to put it because that was simply how he was booked to work. Although, I definitely gotta agree, The Rock had one of the worst ever Sharpshooters ever.
But, my vote definitely has to go to Bret. He's my 2nd favorite wrestler(right after Hulk Hogan). He may not have been the most charismatic or the best mic worker, but he is arguably the best technical wrestler ever. His technical wrestling and workrate in the ring was second to none. His matches told a story. Some of his matches are among my all time favorites. His match against Mr. Perfect at Summer Slam '91 was amazing. It was spectacular. Probably my favorite match ever. His rematch with Mr. Perfect at King of the Ring '93 was a close runner-up. Very great match. A classic. His match with Rowdy Roddy Piper at Wrestlemania VIII was great. His Steel Cage match against Owen at Summerslam '94 was epic. Best Steel Cage match I've ever seen. He even made that fat tub of lard,Yokozuna, look good at Wrestle Mania IX and X. Even his tag team matches in the Hart Foundation. The Hart Foundation vs. The Nasty Boys at Wrestlemania VII was a classic. My vote definitely has to go to Bret. |

Such a tough matchup to pick since both wrestlers were great and both are easily Hall candidates.
The Rock might not be good in terms of wrestling skills but his selling of certain moves, promo ability, charisma, and having the crowd totally in his hand ready to react to anything he did. He had great feuds during the Attitude Era with Stone Cold as his and that Era's greatest feud while also putting over Orton and Hurricane Helms during his brief return back to the WWE. Bret Hart might not be as quality as the Rock in terms of promos and charisma but his wrestling skill was one of the best during the early to mid-1990s WWF era. Like the Rock he also had great and big name feuds in both the WWF era and Attitude era with his feud against HBK as his and WWF's biggest during its low period. He also was influential in putting over Stone Cold during the Wrestlemania match where Stone Cold passed out from pain rather than tap to the Sharpshooter. I end up picking The Rock by slightest margins mostly because of Rock vs Hogan Wrestlemania 18 just based on how insane hot the crowd was and how much improvising the Rock could do in an instant since he switched from a face to heel within seconds to "play" with the crowd cheering Hogan. |

Why don't you guys just vote Rock into the Hall of Fame and wait for Bret to come back. I swear, we have some horrible strategists in this thread.

I'm not sure. I'm not even a "textbook" Bret hater. In fact, I'm reading his autobiography right now. Just a shame to see Rock get to the finals to be dethroned.
