I think it'll be the Yankees/Phillies again. Then there will be an uproar over the need for a salary cap again.

Looking at the payrolls of the teams in the playoffs this year you can really see how spread apart the payrolls are. In the playoffs are the teams with the #1, 4, 10, 11, 15, 19, 21 and 27 payrolls. Doesn't really get much more even than that. |

like Inno said, AL is whomever shows up. There's no clear fav to me there. In the NL, I really think the Phillies just cruise on in to the Series unless there is a complete collapse in thier pitching.

The stat that the Reds made the playoffs with the 21st highest payroll completely ignores the fact that it took 15 years of rebuilding with little money to get there. And it completely ignores the fact that after this season they'll have to let pieces go because they're too expensive. Again, fundamentally unfair. |

I can't believe people are actually trying to use the Rays as an example of winning in a small market. Have we all completely forgotten about the 10 straight seasons of 90+ losses? Are we ignoring that their best player is going to get bought by a big market team this offseason because the Rays can't afford him?

First of all can you please type like a grownup? You don't need ellipses. Spaces work just fine.
Second, they're successful now, after a decade of failure trying to make themselves competitive by stockpiling prospects. But soon those prospects will leave for big market contracts the Rays simply can't afford. And then they'll have to start the process over again. Meanwhile big market teams can try to be competitive every single year. That is horribly unfair. |

Well the Cardinals pretty much have that on lockdown for the foreseeable future with 10 World titles. Phillies definitely have dynasty potential though.

At the end of the year I like to look at the games I went to on the year and see how my record was. One of these days I need to try and compile my all-time record. I keep my ticket stubs religiously so I could figure it out.
I went 0-4 last year. This year was more merciful at 2-1, though I interestingly enough got to experience the high and low points of the year. April 28: Mets beat Dodgers 7-3. Gives them a 7-game winning streak as things look pretty optimistic for the year. It's the only good game John Maine pitches this season. June 23: Mets beat Tigers 5-0. Things still looking pretty good for the Mets. Dickey shows everybody why he's a crowd favorite. Crowd boos K-Rod when he comes out for the 9th because everybody wanted to see Dickey go for the shutout. August 11: Rockies beat Mets 6-2. Manny Acosta lets up a grand slam which deflates the crowd. The 2-9 West Coast swing after the All Star Break had taken it's toll, hope is lost by this point. Lots of Fire Jerry chants. K-Rod winds up injuring himself after the game. |

that's kind of a cool thing to do. I am going to do it right now as well. I only went to two games though which is a drag.
1-1 The first one was early in the season. I don't really remember when but it was the game where Chris Iannetta hit a walk off home run to beat the Mets right after I said that he would hit a walk off home run. Second one was when the Giants were here in August and Jonathan Sanchez dismantled the Rockies and they ended up losing 10-1 and I wanted to jump off of the stadium by the fifth inning. |

Going to Game 3 on Sunday. Hope I run my postseason record to 1-0.
Pretty content with the unanimous Phillies prediction for the series so far. Haven't heard or read of a single person outside of Cincinnati picking the Reds, and I only know two or three in the city picking the Reds too. But that's the way it should be given the two teams' resumes. Still, it's nice when a young, hungry team is completely overlooked. |

Jeff Wilpon saying all the right things on WFAN this morning, including taking fan phone calls which is a pretty ballsy move on his part.
He said the new GM is gonna have full autonomy, including having the final say as to who is the next manager. He was even asked specifically that if the GM came to him and said that he couldn't move Perez but he can't be here, would he eat the $12 million - and Wilpon said absolutely. He was also asked if the budget is going to be a problem and he said no. When asked "So if the GM asked you for $20 million for Cliff Lee to better the team" Wilpon said he'd do it. Naturally, I'll believe the full autonomy thing when I see it. But I hope he's telling the truth. |

Ron Washington should be the feel good story of the postseason. He was smoking crack in shitty motel rooms this time last year.

Pirates fired Russell.
Just who do they actually think they're gonna get that could do any better with the crap that ownership lets them have. And last week they fired their AA manager the day after he was named AA Manager of the Year. |

The Pirates are a team that hasn't won since the Barry Bonds/Bobby Bonilla days, yet they never seem to REALLY try to improve...they never try to sign decent players (stars), they never hire a GOOD manager who's had success...nothing.

Francisco Liriano and Tim Hudson are the Comeback Players of the Year
NL pool must have been really bleak this year to give it to a guy who already came back at the end of last year. If Reyes didn't injure his oblique this year I gotta figure he would've won it. If they were to base this award on guys who went from bad-or-mediocre to really good then Thome and Dickey would've this on lockdown. |

I wonder how a Breakout Player of the Year award would be received. Rookies not eligible. Basically an award for the crappy or mediocre players who finally break out.
Comeback Player of the Year is usually reserved for guys who were good, had a really bad year with performance, injuries, whatever...and then they bounced back. That kinda squeezes out the R.A. Dickeys and Colby Lewises of the world, who were never good to begin with and so they only bounced back from perennial crappiness. The Breakout Player of the Year Award would give them something. Jose Bautista would be the runaway AL winner for that award this year. |

...I don't want Jose Bautista anywhere NEAR an award until next season ends and we see if he's the real deal, and those "batting changes" he made last September ('09) are the REAL reason for his success, or if he's the Dominican version of Brady Anderson.
