I'm shocked at when the Bruins usually have a 1-2 goal lead late in the 3rd, they usually find a way to blow it but the two times they played at Pitt, they managed to play great in the 3rd and tie or take a lead.

Ron Wilson's landmark 600th win against his former team may leave a bitter taste in his mouth.

According to a report in the Toronto Star, the Maple Leafs head coach posted an undisclosed amount of cash in the locker room prior to Tuesday's contest as extra incentive for his team to beat the Sharks.

The NHL has said that league rules were violated and, while it isn't viewed as a significant offence, the Leafs will be fined.

"If it is a violation, we will remedy it with the league," GM Brian Burke told the Star. "We'll take the money back, do whatever the league tells us to do. We have not heard anything from the National Hockey League."

Traditionally, players will post cash to a new teammate to score the winning goal when he meets his former team.

The Maple Leafs gave Wilson his benchmark victory by beating the Sharks 4-2, a game that featured a four-goal third-period rally.

Everyone does it, they just happen to let it slip this time. So they'll pay the "fine." And do it again, without getting caught in the future.

I wouldn't have even called this news, but it must be a slow day in Toronto other than Funberntiensentenieund getting traded there.

Is anyone here in agreement that Brian Burke is by far the most over-rated General Manager in the National Hockey League? I hate this guy with a passion that I can't even put into words. Honestly, the only good thing he has ever done was drafted the Sedins for Vancouver. Sure, you can say he won the Stanley Cup with The Ducks, but the ground work was already laid. After he left there, the Ducks were left with nothing but over paid role players, and haven't had success after Burke was gone.

Now that he is in Toronto, he made by far one of the worst trades in the history of this league by sending 2 first round picks to Boston for Phil Kessel. He traded away the future for a chance to "win now." Well we all know how that is working out for him. It appears that Boston is going to get a top 5 pick in the coming draft again.

What are your thoughts on Brian Burke?

His idea was right in trading for Kessel. But he also thought he'd be able to secure a good playmaker for him, which completely backfired.

I just don't like when GM/coaches bash their own players to the media. I wouldn't say I hate the guy because that is a strong word, I just think his plan fell on its face and he's scrambling.

Burke is far from the most over-rated GM in the league. You're just spitting out the recycled crap that Al Stratchen spews out.

He did kind of help the Rangers break their title curse in 1994 and had key moments leading up to the title.

What hurt the Rangers more was the latter years of them going after too many star or high priced players instead of players who would fit better on the team.

Also was part of the Oilers dynasty during the years with Gretzky and the few without him.

what a coincidence.... just was on TSN.ca and this came up lol...

Quote:
YOUR CALL: WHO IS THE GREATEST NHL CAPTAIN OF ALL-TIME?

Mark Messier, one of the greatest players in NHL history, turned 50 on Tuesday. He has long been considered the standard for competitiveness and leadership in the game of hockey, but is he the game's greatest captain?

Check out the credentials of some of the best players ever to have the C stitched onto their uniforms and post your thoughts below using our Your Call feature.

Mark Messier

On May 25, 2004, Mark Messier solidified his place as one of the greatest leaders the sport of hockey has ever seen.

With his New York Rangers trailing the New Jersey Devils three games to two in the Eastern Conference Final, he guaranteed they would win Game 6 and push the series back to Madison Square Garden for a seventh game.

Messier would go on to score a third period hat trick to lead his team to a comeback victory and springboard them to a Stanley Cup championship. It was the Rangers' first franchise title since the 1939-40 season.

With the victory, Messier became the first and only player in league history to captain two teams to championships (Edmonton, 1990).

There is also the matter of him being second all-time in points and seventh in goals scored.

The NHL even named its leadership award after Messier in 2006.
This is only part of the article, the rest is about other great captains in hockey...

I dont see Oilers rings as a show of leadership, he was on a fucking good team at the height or its play. Excellent player, average leader.

Also I FUCKING hate with a fucking passion when people use Stanley Cups as a measure of personal achievement. Its a team achievement, not a personal one.

He lead the rangers yes, but what if he didnt win the Cup after making the call? It wouldnt be remembered much at all.

Also, who did he lead to win? He scored the goals himself.

I love the guy, he is an amazing player but an amazing leader he is not.

He did lead an Oilers team to their final cup with a team missing a lot of their stars from the 80's. I read a biography on the cup winning Rangers and trust me, Messier was the reason. That team had a nutcase for a coach in Keenan who was constantly feuding with Neil Smith, crazy players like Kovalev and players who flat out HATED Keenan. Messier is a tremendous leader.

What if he didn't win the cup after calling the win? Come on... thats just searching for shit to say... what if Gretzky is never born.. yada yada... thats a poor argument, we could spend a thousand hours talking about "what ifs".

At the end of the day... if you have accolades named after you, if you have records in the book that sound like "the only player to...." it means something.

You are living in a very small, very small minority. In fact you are the only person I've ever heard say that about Messier. The arguments for him being a great leader far outweigh those that don't.

Funniest thing I've read about this years all star game. " The all star game has been criticized for poor goaltending, forwards who don't backcheck and players who can't be bothered to care. So in short, Erik Karlsson has played in about 40 of these games this year.
