CM Punk is making the best of what's been given him, which is alot. The problem really though is that there ain't alot of top tier heels left for him to feud with. Dolph, Del Rio, and Miz just ain't there yet (not really sure if the Miz will ever be there really). His feud with Jericho is just what he needs.

CM Punk's biggest problem is this:

The WWE have marketed him in such a way that attracts NO ONE. Kids under the age of 12 (WWE's biggest target demographic) can't relate to CM Punk all that well. Adult fans like and respect CM Punk, but also realize that he can be sooo much more (i.e. like he was last summer). Most adult fans see the current CM Punk/Laurinitis feud as a cheap immitation of Austin/Vince. Furthermore - most adult fans like......but do not love.....this current version of CM Punk that is "restrictive" in what he can and can't say due to him currently being a face (again - as opposed to what he was doing last summer when he cut those promo's towards John Cena and HHH).

Heyman's recommendation: Let CM Punk be a tweener and let the crowd react to him however they want (and for the most part, the crowd would love him to death if he did this). Let CM Punk rip on The Rock, John Cena, Hulk Hogan, etc., etc.

If the WWE let CM Punk say and do whatever he wants (without obligating/restricting CM Punk to "act" like a face), then he'd appeal a lot more to the Adult/Internet fanbase as he once did.

No Punk is not a paper champion. He's doing the best with what he is given for opponents and his feud with Ziggler has been amazing.

The issues with Laurinaitis does feel tact-on but it also has been slowly developing to a potentially big pay off. Then again the feud is basically a restart of the one Punk had with Triple H's authority which ended up being rushed too fast and making it all about just Triple H in the end.

Rey Mysterio's 2nd reign and Big Show most recent reign would be considering they were more for stat-padding than actually doing anything with it. Both also barely lasted the rest of a show.

If HHH turned heel, stayed on as the authority figure and built up a stable of cronies comprised of Nash and some of the young guys like Ziggler just to torment Punk and other babyfaces I think all parties involved would be in a much better spot than what we have now.

Also, in kayfabe terms, you're looking at the wrong champion. Daniel Bryan is the definition of a "paper champion". Won the belt by cashing in MitB on a KO'd Big Show, retained via DQ and No Contest over Show.

I was actually thinking the other day about this. Is CM Punk still losing people in the ratings? If so, I was wondering how to revive him, and get him back to "that level" of July 2011 last year. And I was questing whether or not he should turn heel. And no... he wouldn't snap and become a bad-███ submission machine.

John Cena and The Rock will no doubt dominate the kayfabe wrestling headlines heading into WrestleMania, and CM Punk, as WWE Champion, has a legitimate gripe there. Punk ripping on Cena and The Rock for stealing his spotlight while he is the Best Wrestler in the World is a recipe for great mic interactions between The Rock and CM Punk.

The reason I started thinking along these lines was because I was thinking about how The Rock really became a star. How was he "made." How were all the tools turned into a major resource for the company. The Rock got everyone on side with his charisma and mic work, and then turned on them to become the Corporate Champion. That's when The Rock really took off as a major star, if the sources I read correctly were any indication. But I can't think of another example (even an attempt) to have a fresh babyface swerve us by revealing they are a piece of ████ (but certainly a charismatic and entertaining one). CM Punk would be absolutely perfect for that. I just wonder if he would really benefit down the line, or if turning him now would just destroy any momentum he currently has.

Alternatively, the WWE could "break the fourth wall" with Punk, and use irony to try and get Punk more over as a babyface. Have John Laurinaitis return some shoot promos on Punk, talking about his quarterly ratings and PPV buyrates, and have Johnny Ace drop the bombshell that the real reason he is out to █████ CM Punk is because he's bad for business, he just plays by the rules and doesn't say it -- but Punk likes to go around, "shooting," like some sort of idiot nerd on the internet to get himself over. Call it the "Conan O'Brien push." By publicly ousting Punk as a commercial failure, you might draw some attention to him. Use irony to backwards push Punk.

Or you could just keep doing what you're doing and give it time.

I think with some guys, the WWE are better off having them as tweeners......and letting the crowd react to them however they want. With some guys - if you try too hard to make them a baby face, it will have an adverse effect.

Comparing Babyface Orton 2004 to the present Randy Orton is a good example of what I'm talking about.

CM Punk is still way over with the fans, but he'd be even more over if he acted in a similar way to what he did last summer. THAT CM Punk didn't give a fuck as to WHO he was slagging. THAT is what the fans want to get behind.

My problem with the current CM Punk is that there's almost a "manufactured originality" to his gimmick (which is kind of an oxymoron). The whole Punk/Laurinitis feud is basically a poor man's version of Austin/Vince.

If the WWE really want to maximize CM Punk and get him on the next level, he should start taking shots at The Rock........complete shoots. Let the crowd react however they want.

Do this after Mania though.

CM Punk is NOT a paper champion. I've done my research, and while this is an older article, I can vouch that International Paper Company is indeed the Paper Champion.
