One of my favorite open world games. So much to see and explore. A lot of 'oh shit' moments. Some repetitive qualities, but generally just a blast to play. Smooth combat and gameplay mechanics made it great fun the whole way through.

I remember the first wolf swarm I dealt with. Felt like such a badass for not using deadeye.

Lol. This game had many fine qualities, but smooth combat/gameplay are absurd.

Gotta agree with KK here, combat and horse maneuvering could get a little hateful at times. Overall a good game nonetheless.

I remember me and like 4 other people from tpww were playing free roam, and we walked into this town on horseback, side by side, and some other guy walked past us and said "Whoa, I don't want any trouble".
That moment alone, made buying the game worth it. So awesome. I also, remember playing free roam by myself, and racking up a huge bounty while sniping from the roof of a building in amirillo. Other players came in, trying to collect the bounty, but I held them off. |

EDIT: Just realized I got cash and a game for it, so I guess you were right. Though you didn't know that. |

I liked it well enough, thought L.A. Noire was better though
mostly because L.A. Noire doesn't have some cock coming up to you and saying "Mr. Marston" 4 million fucking times |

It was fun, -responsive-, and even multiplayer was easy once I got the hang of it. I recall having many games where I had ridiculous (20:1, 14:1, etc) k/d ratios by the end of games. That hardly supports the idea that the combat and gameplay wasn't smooth. Guess it depends on how literally, or how differently you define smooth. What do you think wasn't smooth about it? It was easy to take cover, movements/commands were very fast and responsive. It was easy to shoot from horseback. The target lock worked great, as well as switching targets while locked. It wasn't meant to replace aiming. It just assisted it; you could autotarget, but you still had to aim to get the headshot on someone. The shooting mechanic was solid without resorting to actually BEING a twitch-based precision shooter. Guns actually felt different from one another. The feel of the gameplay reminds me a lot of Uncharted now that I think about it. Not the epic building falling down while you're in it type of gameplay, but the actual movement and shooting. Taking cover was good, transitioning from movement to movement was smooth. Climbing over obstacles was easy. I don't recall ever getting stuck on terrain or scenery. Hell, just the fact that you could get on a horse from different angles, or get off it while it was running and then skid to a stop. The stagecoach chases were a blast. I felt that they put a good deal of effort into the movement and combat mechanics. They did a lot of things that they didn't have to in order to polish it that a lot of people took for granted I think. I'm sure they could have done more, but I've yet to come across a game where I didn't think that about something. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arbLWiF1Bf0 After watching (let alone playing) that I don't know how you can say the combat wasn't smooth. The only thing I recall being unrefined was that sometimes my horse wouldn't do exactly what I wanted it to, or wouldn't respond as I expected it to. And I'm sure there was the occasional glitch (like motherfucking beavers disappearing when I shot them while trying to get goddamn beaver pelts), but nothing that broke the experience or made it consistently more difficult to play. Hell, I played on a freakin SDTV and I could still get a crazy kill streak or snipe someone with an unscoped rifle. (Note: I refer to multiplayer a lot because nothing makes a game more difficult than facing an actual person. Rarely died in single player) Compared to a LARGE portion of video games, RDR's combat mechanics were exceptionally polished. |

Yes, but more important: Does the protagonist keep threatening to kill people who dick him around, only to get dicked around again?

I can see why. That whole theme of the end of the old West and the inability to escape who you are was certainly well-hidden throughout the entire game.

Parsed the extra stuff so as not to confuse you. So I praised the game prior, and I'm now praising the ending. Somehow, calling you an idiot for not understanding the themes of the game indicates my displeasure not with your inability to grasp those running themes (the themes are part of what makes the ending so damn powerful) but rather the ending or game itself. Somehow, criticizing you means criticizing Red Dead Redemption. Christ sake, you're stupid. I'm sorry, why did you appreciate it, exactly? The same sociopathy that had you worshipping the Joker? "lol people die in it?" Did you just see other people applaud it and fall in line, though you didn't understand the ramifications? I'm beginning to think the latter, though I wouldn't preclude the "why so serious?" route. |

When you began the game, you cannot tell me for a second that you expected the ending from the start. As time went on in the game, I guess I expected something of the sort though I still wasn't entirely sure as I believed SPOILER: show As for the Joker, I saw The Dark Knight on opening day so I could hardly fall in line. I thought the performance was exceptional and Ledger really captured the demented pyschopath who beat Robin to death with a crowbar. That's not to say Nicholson (sp?) Was bad, he fit the theme perfectly with his Joker. Ledger captured the dark grim world Nolan created to a T. Now of course I expect you to tear that apart with your analytical expertise finding some flaw with it to use against my opinion so you come off as intelligent because you couldn't just enjoy a good movie and agree with someone but rather had to find and remind people what you thought was wrong with it. That is what you do, Jim. |
