You are missing the point. If he would have trusted his QB who had been playing well to get a 1st down instead of just running it on 3rd & long they could have gotten a 1st down and potentially put the game on ice.

a lot of teams run on third and long to avoid interceptions, but point taken.

True, but if you are going to call a suprise onside and fake FG...why get conservative in that spot when your QB has been torching the best defense in college football all half? Trust your players to make big plays.
