I had felt they kind of wrote themselves into a corner. Wardlow ends his fued with mjf and comes out of it with all the momentum in the world, but you cant really book him against punk because he'd have to lose. Which you don't want to do immediately after the mjf fued.
Punk getting hurt was the perfect oppurtunity to get out of this quagmire. Wardlow wins the interim title and maintains that momentum, and then a few months down the road, punk can win the unification match. By that time wardlow will have established himself as a top guy and the loss wouldnt hurt him.

I don’t necessarily disagree with Wardlow going after the TNT Title. I actually probably would have gone that route myself if I were booking. But it’s the how and the why that are insane.
It’s introducing another championship to water down all divisions. It’s him shitting on the World Title picture. It’s their reluctance to actually push him after being put in this position. He’s being given the TNT Title to keep him anchored, you can tell.
