Smash Brothers is fun for a few minutes, but I can't play it for too long, it gets old after a few fights. Although Capt. Falcon (or whatever the F-Zero character's name is) is the man.

I never liked Starscream. His ambition was interesting, in a limited sort of way. He never had the brains or talent to back it up, though. My favourite Decepticon had to be Soundwave. There was something so disciplined about his unwavering loyalty to Megatron.

To tie this in so it is sort of on topic -- I would not mind a Transformers fighter, using characters from Generation One. It'd be pretty tricky, I imagine, but it would have a really fun old-school feel, I imagine.
