2D sprites or 3D models? 2D or 3D gameplay? Super moves? Super meters? Combo-centric or tit-for-tat? Guard meters? Just defend? Parries? Weapon based or hand-to-hand?

I'm not sure why, but the only fighting games I used to enjoy were SFII and Mortal Kombat 1-3. And would probably put those on the top of my list. I never liked that Soul Blade series, Virtua Fighter and all. So I guess I prefer the 2D fighting games.

And about wrestling I consider the N64 wrestling games to be the best (Revenge and WM2K, only played No Mercy using an emulator cause it wasn't released in Poland. Smackdown vs Raw 2008 for XBOX360 was pretty cool too, but I only played for like 30 minutes or so and haven't checked out the other parts.

Oh btw, do walking fighting games count? Cause I used to love Cadillacs and Dinosaurs and Punisher.

Have you played Street Fighter 4? It's very traditional 2D gameplay with a real sense of momentum (if you dig that as far as wrestling games go).

What would you like to see in a modern 2D fighter that would get you playing it?

I don't play games anymore, as my PC is shit. But if they can manage to have this old 2D fighting games feel, I'd surely give it a try at a friend's place or something. And nope, can't say that I tried SFIV, is it any good? I might check it out on youtube.

How about a wierd blend of CVS2's Groove system and Dante's style change mechanic in DMC4.This would probably result into a nasty combo fest but at least it would stylish. Good luck tryin to balance that.

my favourite games have been ones like no mercy and the new UFC one if anything i guess. used to love SF2 but these had more play. no mercy was the most fun by far though. i think it's the way you can vary the rules of the fight so much that keeps it appealling.

I agree the hand to hand fighting style of the UFC game as opposed to the SF and MK style games just felt more realistic instead of some dude standing across the screen from you throwing fireballs or spears. I wouldn't have a problem with the occasional metaphysical superpower, but to me a game that features use of many differing actual fighting styles and in close hand to hand combat would be what I want as opposed to uppercuts and legsweep cheese.

Basically what I'd want would be to throw a bunch of differing fighting styles into a game as opposed to the 3 in UFC and do away with a majority of the ground game (leave a bit of punching or kicking your opponent while they're down, not enough to spam but enough to punish a person for getting knocked down) and then if you want throw in a meter that you can build up where at the opportune time you can launch your fireball/spear/whatever.

If you could tone it down to 2 Grooves you can switch between it might be doable. How about switching move-sets? Well, I suppose that's merely changing stances which already appeared in several fighting games. At the very least I thing switching grooves between rounds is something that can be done without worrying about balance, depending on how these grooves work!

Remember that UFC is a sport simulation not meant to be particularly balanced, while traditional fighting games strive for a semblance of balance (no weight classes in a fighting game, everybody should be able to take anybody). And while this doesn't mean every fighting game is balanced, it's a development priority while sports simulation doesn't need to promote that at all.

BUT since you wouldn't mind para-normal elements in this fighter you speak of, certain consessions must be made for the sake of gameplay, some that may betray the realism seen in UFC's game. However, I imagine a game that represents several fighting styles (like Tekken), grounded in a more physics-based fighter (dare I say Def Jam FfNY?). It can happen...

It honestly doesn't bother me whether it is 2D or 3D, as long as it fits the style. I mean, it's possible to do a great 2D fighter with the right attitude about it, even if the concept seems "out-dated." 3D of course is the natural evolution, and creates more "realistic" fights, but if you're going with simple gamplay, it can really bog down.

One thing I love about fighters, actually, is story and character. I'm a huge fucking nerd for that sort of shit. I love to know who I am fighting as, why they are fighting, etc. Even though it became a mess, I love the story of Mortal Kombat -- because it at least tries. You get such a bizarre group of characters, too.

Yeah I don't expect straight realism out of a fighting game, but I was striving more for the actual feel you get from the UFC game in the hand to hand aspect. But I think you and I are on the same wavelength as far as the balance goes. I agree everyone should be capable of defeating everyone, but the UFC game just seems so much more satisfying in the fighting aspect of two evenly matched guys (when you match them up) than the usual "fighting" games do.

Tekken was the game I had mostly in mind while I was writing that out. I don't have a lot of first hand experience with it as most of my fighting game experience is with the MK games, however I do have some experience with it and one thing I have always liked about Tekken was how everyone was so different in their style but almost all fighters were usable. You are always going to have some styles that are difficult to master and thus the character will be deemed terrible by most while the best players will be excellent with those guys and that's fine.

As far as supernatural, I was thinking of the end of the MK movie with Lui Kang and Shang Tsung how he knocks him into the pit with a fireball after going the whole fight hand to hand. Something like that would allow you to keep the legacy of moves like that in the games, with having better fighting when you actually have to fight as opposed to standing there and trying to win with projectiles. You should make the projectiles a rare occurance that can only occur at certain times and do more damage than usual, but still leave room for the fight to continue unless you only have a small amount of damage left. Personally I'm not a big fan of the projectiles, but they are such a big part of the legacies of these games that I don't feel you should remove them, but they need a big overhaul in my opinion.

Don't be afraid to say fireballs could be taken out of fighters. It's radical attacks on the norm like that that makes for something special. And I like the idea of making 'the fireball' a big deal again. I think we all take advantage of the idea of shooting fuckin fire from your character's hands.

And Bushido Blade needs to come back. Fuck it, somebody should just rip it off. The original devs don't give a shit anymore.

For a new fighter series I wouldn't want things like fireballs, but I was thinking more along the lines of what would work for revamping the MK series. Over the top powers make that series special, they're part of it's identity. I don't think getting rid of them would be right for that, but cutting back on them would be.
