One more "What if" question (I dont think anymore made this a topic)



I'm sure this has been mentioned here and there, but I don't think theres actually been a post devoted to this question. (Who's gonna be the first to tell me STOP LIVING IN THE PAST!) This was Bret Hart's last wrestling match before he retired and after this is when WCW went seriously downhill. Let's say Bret Hart adressed his Starrcade injury when he recieved it and was able to recover and keep wrestling. Do you think it would have helped WCW in any way? Bret was booked extremely poorly when he first got to WCW but he was finally getting the push he deserved. The product wasn't extremely horrible at this point (the ratings were still pretty good) and we could have finally gotten to see a properly booked and promoted Bret Hart Vs Hogan match in 2000.

To be honest, the fact that the newly-formed NWO were already feuding amongst themselves doesn't say much for WCW's booking at the time.

It was a sinking ship already past the point of no return. No doubt we'd have gotten a few more matches out of Bret, and maybe World Title victories, but it wouldn't have saved the company, and it wouldn't have made a Hart/Hogan feud any more interesting to me.

WCW had a history of booking Bret Hart terribly and even though he got the big push in those last few months, I doubt Bret Hart still being around would have made much difference. The time to capitalize on Bret Hart was right when he debuted a month after the screwjob, but WCW didn't do that.

he probably had 30 days not appearing on tv in his wwe contract.

Honestly If i was bitchoff I would have sent a helicopter to land on Brets front lawn and pick him up or have him do a shoot promo right there.

He should have then filed off the wwf logos of one of the belts he had and proclaimed to be the undefeated world champion.

He should challenge Hogan or whomever was WCW champion to a title vs title match where one man will be the true undisputed world champion in all of professional wrestling.

Bret had great people to work with in the WWF, and the WWF hype machine was fully behind him as "the guy."

In WCW in 2000, the only person he really had to work with was Chris Benoit, and he was gone shortly after the injury that ended Hart's career. Bret would have been saddled with people like Kevin Nash, Sting, Flair, Goldberg and Scott Steiner. He probably could have gotten some good programs out of Booker T, Jeff Jarrett, Lance Storm and DDP, but it wouldn't have been in a storyline or feud that could have saved WCW. And Bret vs Hogan? The match would certainly have sucked, no matter how hard Bret would have tried to make it interesting.

I still think the WCW product was still very good when Hart had to retire as an active star in Jan 2000. I did like the Hulk Hogan Vs Kevin Nash at Road Wild 1999, it had a very "classic" wrestling feel to it. I knew going into the match it wasn't going to be a technical or high flying match up, it was more based on showmanship. I think that a match between Hogan and Hart in 2000 could had still been well choreographed and hyped up. When Brett had to pull out of Sold Out is considered the first "domino" in the eventual downfall of WCW. Russo was fired and Sullivan was promoted to head booker that caused several superstars to leave which caused the product to suffer. When Russo was brought back he was given full creative control and that's when we got the shenanigans that we remember from the end of WCW.

I recall an incident in 2000 I think, where Bret ran down to the ring with a chair during a Hogan match/segment, and prepared to swing the chair as the show went off the air, so of course it left everyone wondering who he hit (since internet spoilers weren't so common back then).

I seem to recall he hit Hogan and said the reason was because he'd always wanted a match with Hogan and Hogan always seemed to duck out/avoid it.

I dunno... I was a stupid 13-year-old mark back then so I ate it all up... but really can't remember if it happened like this. If anyone knows...?

Did you watch the match in an alternate universe? I remember Hogan vs Nash from Road Wild 1999 very clearly, firstly because I paid for the match, and secondly because it was one of the slowest, most boring, plodding, God awful matches I've ever seen in my life. REALLY?

And Bret Hart pulling out of Souled Out is not one of the first dominos of the eventual downfall - not even close. Eddie, Benoit, Saturn and Malenko leaving the very next day is one of them, but even then, the company was crumbling LONG before then and the backstage situation and creative situation was in shambles way before Bret even got his main event push. The first real marker of the fall of WCW was the Sting/Hogan fiasco of a match at Starrcade, where Hogan proved once again that he doesn't know what's good for business, and then again the following year at Starrcade when Nash beat an incredibly over, not-ready-to-end-the-streak Goldberg, and of course the Fingerpoke of Doom two weeks later.

Well, diffrent strokes, diffrent folks. I was 11 when I saw it the first time so that might be why I liked it then. Even now, its no where near the top of my greatest matches of all time lists but I still enjoy it.
