Brokeback Mountain
If it weren't for the Boondocks comic strip, I would have never heard anything about it.

Apperently, its about two gay cowboys being secretly gay or something. I dunno, has anyone seen it?

Thought the same thing about "Hulk..."

But, yeah, "Brokeback" is getting fantastic reviews, and Heath Ledger is getting major Oscar buzz. Supposed to be excellent. Unique, too, in that it depicts two "all-American" characters ('cause what's more American than cowboys?) who fall in love...and both happen to be men. Can't think of another mainstream movie like that.

I didn't even know it was out yet.

Bump

Excellent movie. Heath Ledger did a great job portraying a gay man who refuses to accept his sexuality, and Jake Gyllenhall was gold as always. I was pretty uncomfortable with the graphic scenes, but Anne Hathaway's tits made up for it. I don't like chick flicks, but objectively I can say it was really good.

Spoilers (highlight): I never felt more sympathy for a gay guy when Jack got killed at the end. Very sad.

I have to wonder if this movie is being praised simply because of it's bold content. Is it really as good as they say or are people simple glad-handling it.

That's what I was thinking but I finally saw it last week and I think it certainly deserves the praise. It's not the best movie ever or anything but definitely one of the best of the year. As I was watching it I thought "Yeah this is pretty good". But the more I think back on it the more I like it.

First of all: Ang Lee is a GOD when it comes to backgrounds and scenery. There are some overwhelmingly beautiful shots in this film; so much that they actually take away from the story. The mountains, the lakes, the rivers; everything is shot with the eye of a true photographic artist. Hats off to Lee.

As far as the movie goes, I have to admit, it was pretty good. Ledger's Oscar Buzz is truly deserving, and Jake Gyllenhaal, while kind of weak in this movie, holds his own as well. Heath really, really makes you believe he is his character, and his gruff attitude never comes off as forced, but all natural.

Now, for the important part: the gay sex. I admit, it made me cringe. I thought I might be able to sit there, watch the screen, and be able to detach myself from what was going on. I was wrong. Watching Jake and Heath make out was just too much; I had to turn away. I'm not homophobic in any way, but that was seriously too much for me.

Other than that, it was a good movie. Maybe a little too long, maybe a little too dragged out, but a good movie none-the-less.

At least the gay fucking being thrown in first made everything else seem tolerable, though still awkward.

I doubt it could be as uncomfortable viewing as certain parts of The Woodsman, even with being more graphic.

It is getting great reviews everywhere, which is unusual. I was thinking "Oscar film" and I hate Oscar films, and this year's Oscar acting adversity would be playing a gay, rather than a handicap, a Jew or a black or whatever else it has been recently.

I just saw this tonight and thought it was excellent. A really good take on the love story.

What's so cringeworthy about the gay sex scene anyway? It lasts all of 15 seconds and it's a couple of men grunting beside each other. Most Hollywood sex scenes linger for ages, this was almost perfunctory. That said they don't waste much time over the straight sex scenes either.

Anyway, the performances are brilliant, excellent enough to make me forget all the talk over the premise and to enjoy it for what it was.

Also it's not a gay issue film or trying to make a point. It's a love story, like I said, one that also gives time to show the point of view of the neglected wife and how the lack of real love and affection from Ledger's character affects her, as she sees how alive he becomes when his lover comes to town. It's about the relationships in the story and the people involved.

No. I have a degree and a girlfriend. I anticipated something a bit hotter than that for the gay sex scene after people talking about how uncomfortable it was. Ludicrous claims. They didn't even go for slow passionate kisses either, it was all grabbing and almost wrestling. If there's any part where Gyllenhal and Ledger were unconvincing, it was when they had to kiss each other.

Two sets of bird's tits were also on show. All in all it was fairly tame.

I suppose everyone has their own barometer of what makes them uncomfortable or not. That scene, as a fan of both Ledger's and Gyllenhaal's work, made me feel extremely uncomfortable. Sure it could have been much worse, but for what it was, it made me not want to be sitting there watching it with my girlfriend.

When people talk about this movie, from what I've seen, there are two groups of people, and I'd like to talk to these two groups of people.

For everyone who hasn't seen the movie because it's gay
It's not as graphic as you say everyone says it is. Yea, a dude gets fucked in the ass, but it's not like you're watching "Gay Butt Ninjas From Mars Part XII". It's not a porno. A couple of dudes make out, but that's nothing that you won't see in west Hollywood or Palm Springs. It's a totally decent love story, but it's just about two guys.

Shut the hell up. It's good, but not great, and it's not novel. Watch "Boys Don't Cry" if you think Brokeback is the first gay love story. Hell, "Boys Don't Cry" was based on a true strory. Back to Brokeback... It's the most overhyped two hours I've ever sat through. It's nothing new and it's not great.

If you think that gays and transgenders are interchangeable, 450, I swear I'm gonna hit you.

It is "novel," by the way, more for its look at homosexuality less from a perspective that this is a "gay" movie, and more along the lines of a love story. It also addresses a population not normally touched upon (Gays in isolated, red state environments) and the presentation plays this up well.

That being said, I find that Ledger's part is unconvincing, I think the movie was stretched out more than it needed to be, and I wish people would stop fellating it as though it were flawless, but I think you missed the boat in a lot of your commentary.
