Yeah, I wasn't overly impressed by it. Vendetta was a great game and loved the controls, but it seems they have messed around with them.

Yeah, it looks like they took the "hot beats" element and overdid it while not focusing on the rest of the gameplay, just like the rest of rap culture these days.

Pretty much. The mechanics look awful, even in the videos, but as long as there's a lot of flash, I don't think the rap community's gonna give a shit about substance.

I liked the way they did it in Fight For New York. If they'd expanded on that system instead of this new crap, I'd be interested.

I'm disappointed. The fighting feels very sluggish, the load times are pretty nasty, and the environment/music thing is kind of lame.

I never played any of the other DefJam fighting games, so I don't know what's different, but this feels amazingly inferior to Virtua Fighter 5 (which I also own) in every way..

Probably going to sell this on eBay soon.

Def Jam: Vendetta uses the AKI engine with somewhat over the top moves. Like No Mercy, only there are no backstage areas. No create a player. Every character has a front and back special move. You can only KO someone with a special, otherwise you have to pin them or make them tap out. There are 4 generic characters with no voices that you can use for story mode. Everyone else has voices. Alright game, but the playable rappers novelty wears off pretty quickly.

Def Jam: Fight For New York used a very modified AKI engine (there are punch, kick, grapple and run buttons and you can choose up to 3 out of 5 fighting styles). Most of the environments no longer have wrestling rings and are fairly interactive (breakble stuff, crowd giving you weapons, etc). The fighting style combinations and the order than you pick them in determine the moves your created guy will have. You no longer need to execute a special to KO someone (each fighting style has a specific KO method and the more styles your guy knows the more ways to KO people). Also, they got rid of pins and make it possible to KO people lots of different ways (submissions are still in). There are a few different match types, but it usually boils down to the same result. You have to use a created guy for story mode and clothing changes are important. Everyone has 1 special move, but created guys can have up to 4. Everyone has voices. This is basically an awesome game.

Those sound good. This felt like a really bad engine, I couldn't figure out how to do anything but punches and kicks. Also, the game doesn't even look that good on my HDTV, it looks hardly better then a PS2 game. I think I was ripped off.

Seriously, anyone who has not played Fight For New York should do, if you like fighting games. It takes a little bit of getting used to, the timing is a little weird as the pace can be a bit frantic, but once you get used to it you can really have some outstanding brawls.
