LOL, even my mum has the WWE figured out...

I had my extended family over for dinner tonight, and my little nephew just randomly asked my dad who his favourite wrestler was. My dad is not a big fan of the product, but simply is aware of some of the guys because I used to watch it religiously.

My dad's answer is not really important, but for those curious as to some of the guys who appeal to some casual fans, his answer was Shawn Michaels, but he used to like Eddie Guerrero (he had forgotten his name, though). I also know for a fact he likes Kurt Angle, Big Show and while not a big fan, he does lean towards the pro-Chris Jericho side. He also thinks Ric Flair is too old, and cannot believe him wrestling.

Anyway, he then asked my mum the same thing, and she said she didn't have one, and that she's fallen out of touch with it. She used to like Chris Jericho, Edge & Christian, but did not approve of Edge's "Rated-R Superstar" gimmick, and Christian is of course in TNA now. She also liked it when Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit would "actually wrestle."

She then said that "they all seem to have characters now." She said that she feels they haven't found a replacement for The Rock or Stone Cold Steve Austin. My nephew then agreed with her, and said that they're trying with John Cena, and she said she had heard people talking about "John Semen/John Ceda/John Seedman" (she didn't have a clue what his name was) at school (she works as a teacher), and that apparently he's very popular, but she thinks that he's not as good as The Rock or Stone Cold Steve Austin because they were probably extentions of their real personalities, but everyone these days is playing a character.

Not really any point to this, just thought I'd share with you the ramblings of my family. My nephew is a massive mark. He felt let down when he found out Santino Marella was actually training to be a wrestler, and wasn't actually a fan, but even he feels like John Cena is a watery substitute for Austin and Rock.

It also goes to show that even if a prospective mark isn't aware of all the insider terms, or who is actually really good, they can still recognise the weaknesses in the WWE.

Pfft

While I'm talking about my life and boring everyone, I have one other slightly wrestling-related incident to report. I live in Brisbane, and around here there is a building called "The TLC Building." Basically it's just offices; I know there is a political party operating out of one of them. I was in the area one day, when I saw a bunch of guys unloading folding chairs out of a truck and taking them into this TLC building.

It just entertained me, because they looked exactly like the chairs the WWE would use, and these guys were lugging them into a building with the big letters "TLC" on the front. I tried to get a picture, but my phone is too crappy.

So yeah, discuss little anecdotes from life that make you chuckle as a wrestling fan.

I honestly don't know. I doubt she would be entertained.

My dad's response to Val Venis' entrance on Heat one week, though:

"Ugh, is this guy still around?"

The "Rated R Superstar" gimmick is kind of lame. He was great as part of the Brood, and better when the Brood simply became E and C, but RRS is fairly lame.

When marks start doubting the credibility of John Cena as a wrestler (let alone champion), you know there are dark times ahead.

Yeah... I don't know. I'm just very drunk at the moment. How come you don't like Edge?? As a face he sucks dick, but as a heel he is brilliant.

I've explained myself multiple times lately, but what's one more?

I don't hate Edge. However, there is a difference between whether or not you like and hate someone and whether or not you think he is marketable/capable/worthy/whatever.

We're talking the latter here. We're also talking about a guy who failed to draw a reaction as a heel. Sure, he got it with Matt Hardy being fired and him being revealed to be the reason, but that's not a very good sign of your ability to actually gather heat. He's not brilliant as a heel, because he couldn't capture heat without something like that, and even then, he couldn't maintain that level of heat once he had it. a brilliant wrestler wouldn't have needed a fluke to begin with, but ignoring that, a brilliant wrestler really should have been able to keep that heat.

I also don't buy him as a draw; ratings went up the night after he won the title from Cena, but I maintain that would have happened with anyone. Hell, I'm betting that Scotty 2 Hotty could have beat Cena by Roll-Up, and gotten the biggest pop of the night.

I get that the IWC thinks he's great, but then again, the IWC was on about Orton and dumped him suddenly, though nothing had really changed. He was still a sub par wrestler with speaking problems who relied non rest holds too much, so using those as excuses is really just justification for the honeymoon being over. And I really think Edge is one of these smark crushes, and that he will probably arbitrarily be dropped once the honeymoon period is over.

And while I could argue popularity some more, I also do dsislike the "Rated R" gimmick. I don't think he can pull it off. He's WWE's KEannu Reeves; he has one style with which he approaches every emotion, every motivation, and it comes off as retarded (though that could just be the Canadian accent, eh?). He came off as fluid and organic as part of the brood, and as E&C, and even in his first face run (Which, BTW, he did well in AND was well received for, so I think it's ridiculous that the IWC pretends he can't play a face).

And as such, I don't see him carrying a main event spot successfully, I don't think he's worthy as a champion, and besides having some cool Merch (Which totally rips off the Rock Star motif), he doesn't have much except a bunch of smarks with a chubby for him.

Well, yes and no. On one hand, she doesn't give a shit about the product, but on the other hand, isn't that the kind of fan the WWE is trying to reel in with their celebrity shit, and attention-grabbing angles. She might not fit the smarky usage of the term, in that she believes everything is real, but she's not too far removed from the kind of person the WWE aims their product to "appeal" to. That's if there is an aim to their product, at all.

And believe me, there was a lot of "why are we discussing this over the dinner table" points made by me, because really, and this is honest, I don't believe the WWE is worthy to enter my mind as what will soon be shit enters my body simultaneous.
