So I'm thinking of getting a PS3 soon...

...despite all the bad stuff we've been saying about it and how the 360 has basically owned everyone on here and in game mags.

There's a few reasons why:
  • I've always seen Sony somehow come out of a console war a winner. This may be no different. A system gets huge momentum, and then they come in from the rear and just win it all.
  • 2008 should be a "make it or break it" for the PS3 (there's that phrase again), but thankfully, they look like they'll make it. I'm suddenly wanting to try Heavenly Sword, I heard MGS4 will be PS3 exclusive for some time, FF13 is going to be awesome (I'm a Final Fantasy mark and SE has ALWAYS pushed Sony's consoles in what they can do), GTA4....dunno yet, and I'm curious to see how Killzone 2 will play out. The E3 trailer looked awesome. Everything looks like Sony has finally got some promising things for the PS3.
  • I got a PSP and I'm looking forward to that whole connectivity factor, however it plays out.
  • Somehow, every time I see a system like the 360 gain a ton of momentum (like the Genesis, N64, or the original XBox) during the beginning of a new war, it seems to fizzle out later on when someone else gets a key game or when someone finds out just what the other system can do. Once we all saw what the SNES could do that the Genesis couldn't, the SNES eventually won. the PSOne got the nod eventually because it was able to put out higher quality games (for its time), and somehow the PS2 got to be THE system (which is STILL selling hot). This may be a bad omen for the 360, or it may be a trend breaker (for all we know, the winning system could be the Wii). So I am reluctant of getting a 360 until I know it's going to be supported for the long haul.
  • As far as I know, Sony's internet gaming service is free of charge (and hopefully it has and will remain that way).
So, you people think I'm going to take a huge risk here or do you think those are good reasons?

Nah 360 will remain strong. So will Wii and PS3. You can't go wrong really. Live needs to become free to rival PS3 even more.

Yeah, I hope it does. Video gaming seems to be one of the few businesses that still believes in competition....at least from my observation.

Though a few are trying to change that.

With Blu Ray essentially winning the format war, a PS3 is pretty crucial.

So, you have two reasons which are blind faith. Those are stupid.

You have one reason of connectivity, which is probably fine.

You have one reason that relates to online play. This, too, will be fine, provided you're willing to deal with potentially inferior versions of games and the like, as well as potentially fewer people playing online.

The Wii's internet service is free, too. ...Though the Wii getting more support for that online play is looking about as likely as the PS3 coming out the console war winner here: It's based on the hope of some and a whole lot of bullshitting.

I actually broke down and got a used 80 GB model from Gamestop. The quality is not that bad for what you get. Decent game selection (friend of mine COMMANDED me to get Heavenly Sword, and I do want it anyway despite the negativity that it has been getting on this site). I got COD3 with it (not sure about that decision, though I find myself enjoying that game even though I don't play that genre too much if at all). I'm also getting MLB08 when it comes out (which is sounding fucking awesome right now from what I've been hearing about that game, especially that it is one of the first that will let us use custom soundtracks). The Dualshock 3 should be available during March (not really a sticking point, but I thought I'd throw that out). The sixaxis controller is pretty cool, though it takes a bit of getting used to (doesn't work quite as well as the Wii's does, but it still responds well).

Only thing I don't like so far is that the PSP/PS3 connectivity can get kind of confusing
as to what exactly it allows you to do. Apparently, you can access your PS3 hard drive from a hotspot through your PSP. I'm not quite working through the learning curve on that yet, and I'm confused about what has to happen in order for it to start working...well that and I have to somehow get my PSP to accept this LONG ass WEP password that won't fit.

All the PS1/2 games I have seem to work despite me reading about a few issues with Final Fantasy 8 and Bloodrayne 2 (minor graphical bugs that they haven't figured out yet). Many of these things were told to be fixed with the update I did tonight.

By the way, KK, since you made it a bit of a sticking point, COD3, at leasts, looks GORGEOUS though a HDMI cable. Too bad I'll have to switch it out with the Comcast cable box (not sure why the screen has a green tint to it when I use the component cables for that). Yet to watch a Blu Ray movie on it, though.

All in all, the good game selection is smaller than the 360, but bigger than the Wii's is right now. That will probably change if 2008 is "the year" the PS3 plays catch up (can't wait to get my hands on some of these games that are coming out this year for it).

Yeah, it's a good purchase I made.

That should change though. Right now developers make the 360 versions first, as well as put their best people on the 360 version. Due to the more complacted nature of programing for the PS3 developers are going to start with the PS3 first, which should entail their best peope as well. This should lead to the PS3 having better multiplaform version than the 360 in the next few years.

Like Destor said, that has less to do with the PS3, and more to do with the developers. As PS3 gains steam, you'll see that go down.

As a PS3 owner, believe me, I agree. It's lazy developer's though, who'd rather make a half ass port than take the time to make it good. Some love to bitch about the PS3 being difficult to make games for, but that doesn't explain games like Uncharted, which are amazing.

Most first time PS3 develpoers has already decided to the PS3 versions first, it's a learning curve thing. It's wasn't any differnt for the PS2 really. I'll go on record saying that sony will win back this console generation, it's just gonna be a patience thing for PS3 owners.

I was reading somewhere on the internet today (sorry if this was discussed somewhere else), that Sony, back in Sep. 07 (or somewhere around that time), that they sent out a new dev kit for developers to use that will make it easier for them to make PS3 games (this is also the kit that will allow them to start letting us use custom soundtracks in games, too. Tells you how long THAT took). We should also see that start to happen with MLB08. MGS4 was also a name that was tossed around as having a customizable soundtrack, but it's just out there with nothing looking official.

I may also want to, once again, elude to some of the gaming media that has dogged on the PS3 since day one and has seemed to weed out any bad news Sony gets or what would make us angry at Sony. Not that some of the bad press is undeserving on Sony, but this is not like Iraq (that's a totally different situation. Nothing good comes out of war, unlike legit companies that want our dollars. Was careful how I worded THAT one). Sony has had some good news come out, like them FINALLY being able to get a Dualshock controller out, or being able to make a profit for the holidays, and whatnot. Still, the media's take on anything PS3 being bad may have had that influence (especially from Joystiq.com. Swear someone from Sony must've forgot that it was HIS day to suck the website owner's cock or something and that owner has held a grudge ever since because he didn't get to blow his load in a Sony man's mouth). That and where's Blu Ray now as opposed to HDDVD?

Well, I'll buy it when it warrants buying. Right now, I'm looking at Tekken 6, Heavenly Sword, the eventual God of War 3 and maybe Resistance: Fall of Man. Not enough to get me to buy a $400 system just yet.

The 360 is doing a whole lot better in terms of getting me to buy. It just seems better on the whole. Can't wait till the competition between the 2 real systems get under way in a couple of years.

As cool as the Wii is, it's more of a peripheral. Too many boring casual, kiddy and/or slapped-together-at-the-last-minute games for my taste. There are like 3 games out now that I'd play at all other than Nintendo's own releases, and Brawl is still a month away. The distant future's not looking too bright (IMO) either. Typical Nintendo. At least I didn't spend any cash on it this time (my brothers took the bait, I reap the benefits for free).

Metroid Prime 3 would've been THE game if Nintendo didn't strip the multiplayer out of it (not that it's a bad game without it, just that it would've made the system).

Now that I've just NOW found out (why am I the last person to find this shit out) that Brawl will be Wi-Fi capable, I might just invest in it. I'd be kicking ass as Samus (who else? I love Metroid, I might be familiar with her attacks, and I wouldn't mind looking at her tight ass as I kick everyone else's...so fucking sue me). But yeah, the Wi-Fi thing is something Nintendo NEEDS TO KEEP IN BRAWL!!

But to prove that point even further (and to make this thread go OOC a bit), this is what Toshiba decided to run in a few markets on the Super Bowl last night (well, according to http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/03/t...f-desperation/, that is). Apparently (according to that site) Toshiba spent 3 mil on this:

It's not so much that they're lazy as it cost/benefit. PS3 has fewer users and a lower attach rate. It's also harder to program for.

Basically, what they're being asked to do is spend more time and money for a smaller user base less likely to buy the same game.

I mean, hey, I bought a PS3, so it's not like I'm saying it sucks. Just be realistic.

Of course, having a cheap HD DVD Player, and a PS3, I don't care which wins.

It's pretty clear HD DVD is dead, though. Even its low prices can't stop it from losing now that Warner jumped ship. It's a shame, because they did a lot of things right.

I thought HD-DVD was dead right out of the gate. In fact, I honestly couldn't believe how many companies were backing it in the first place; The statistics on the different formats clearly showed Blu-ray to be the superior format, albeit more expensive. And with more than double the storage space it is obvious Blu-ray would have lasted longer anyways as the need for more space increases in the future.

Well, you just covered one of the big points: Price.

I mean, do you honestly think we always get the superior format?

I don't own a PS3 yet, but I trust that they will produce some great games in the future which makes them more than the flop they seemed to be out the gate.

I'll end up with a PS3, I think.

I want to get one of them, right now based on the fact that in the long term most games will be on at least one of the systems and the graphics are not exactlly going to be light years apart, I'm still learning towards a 360

Buy a Ps3! It surely can't suck forever!

No, but seriously, unless you want a cheap Blu Ray player, and even then, you probably want a 360. And while Mag's a Nintendo fanboy, I have no real personal agenda.

Blue Ray isn't really a selling point to me, 360 all the way then

Yeah. One of my primary reasons to snag a PS3 was the Blu Ray player. Now, if you don't want that, it loses a huge selling point. I mean, Uncharted is AMAZING so far, but the exclusives on the 360 are better and more plentiful. Cross platform titles are nice, but so far most have either looked better on the 360, or been about the same. Burnout's the only exclusive I can name that's considered better on the PS3, and then not by much. In the long run, the PS3 will probably pull ahead in terms of quality, but in the meanwhile, you still have a lot of exclusives and more on the way.

I found PS3 to be worth it based on the notion that I'd get a Blu-Ray player and a few solid titles. Otherwise, I'm not sure I could justify the price tag.

I''ve had my 360 since launch and adore it. I will eventually get a PS3 when Metal Gear comes out but it goes with the whole "it can't suck forever thing". Metal Gear is the selling point but you have games like Gran Turismo and God of War that will add value. Hopefully Home turns out to be everything it's cracked up to be as well.

Regardless, right now - at least for the next year or so the 360 is easily the better purchase.
