Sony's "Greatest Hits" collection...
So Sony announced ten games would be the first line of "Greatest Hits" for the PS3. Anyway, I noticed that most of these hits are ones that have had price breaks on the 360 for a while. Only three of the games (Resistance, Motorstorm, Warhawk) are true exclusives, and I know I've seen a lot of the other seven marked down on the 360. Not to mention, Motorstorm's one of the pack-in titles on several versions of the PS3 console.

Which is great if you own only a PS3, but I kind of have to wonder what's going on here. Games like NFS Carbon and Fight Night Round 3 don't strike me as good candidates for a current "Greatest Hits" Lineup.

This isn't a "LOL Sony sucks" thread, But it seems like if you're a multiplatform owner and cost was an issue, you'd probably have gone for the 360 versions in comparison. Plus, it lacks Uncharted and Heavenly Sword (The former being awesome, and the second being a game I think would see a lot more love if it was, you know, cheaper). It just seems like they could put out a stronger list as further incentive to sell people on the PS3. I'd be prone to buy a few more games based on little more than a price cut, I'm sure, as I've done with the 360.

But really, CoD3? 4's been out a while and they still didn't feel a price break was prudent until E3?

I wonder how well, though. The PS3 has a pretty miserable attach rate, so you'd think cutting prices on their games would help sell systems.

I know generally Greatest Hits titles on any system are done after the games have stopped selling, but I mean, some of these are ridiculously overdue in the first place. Not to mention the need to boost sales. Aside from that, I really do have to wonder how well things are selling to justify it at full price.

That's pretty terrible.

Uncharted is worth full price, but it's hard to justify full price for a game that old to the general market.

Depends on what you mean by bottom. Worst position, or market share? Because I'm pretty sure Nintendo, despite the best hardware sales, will end up in the weakest position.

I feel Nintendo's casual direction will more than make up for it being the weakest position and push it to #2. They have what both Sony and Microsoft want, but Microsoft has the more traditional crowd, which is why I don't see it dropping from the top.

The only thing Sony has going for them is the Blu-Ray integration and thus the larger the game (in terms of size). They did take a huge hit in losing the FFXIII exclusive, and I feel that was the game that's sealed their fate.

Except the casual crowd doesn't buy games. Well, they do, but not many. That's going to seriously hurt them. Developers don't like the Wii in the first place, and so while they may come out on top selling to the casual market, it doesn't help them for the next gen, and doesn't necessarily help them this gen, either.

Though I think Sony's Hardware is gonna fuck them. They're talking about a 10 year plan, and with a slow BD Drive and memory issues, the hardware's gonna suck in the long game, unless they give us options to upgrade. Because in that ten years, we'll see a new XBox, which will probably have comparable or better hardware with a faster, cheaper, BD drive. Nintendo will probably be in the backseat, barring some new shiny gimmick to hide their bad decisions behind.

I dunno about the Wii. It's selling games. When I was looking through the charts, the top 12 games were all available on Nintendo and a lot of those were exclusives. Plus when you factor in they're the only one of the three making a profit on every system sold and they really are onto a massive winner.

The PS3 is killing everything in Japan, so that may keep Sony going if they ever need a immediate savior. As for the US and UK, the PS3 is catching up pretty quick. The landscape of the install base situation could change drastically by the end of this year if you take to heart the NPD sales figures, which seem to be having the 360 and the PS3 in a statistical dead heat in monthly sales for a while now.

There's definitely a requirement system in place for a game to be a Greatest Hit, though I'm only knowledgeable of two requirements that they consider (there could be more or these could be the only two). One is, of course, the sales. The other, I've heard, is the amount of time the game has been out since the game was first published. Not sure about the exact time frame they require, but I believe I heard somewhere in the vicinity of 6 months to a year. Uncharted and COD4 (and Heavenly Sword, even though I'm not quite sure of the exact month that was published) could fail by the time window, even if it has enough by sales figures to qualify.

In the UK it supposedly requires 400,000 copies to be sold worldwide for it to get onto the Platinum Range which is our version of Greatest Hits. Uncharted is actually on our list so I don't know if sales do factor into it over in the states.

!. I should've said killing everything 360 there. My bad.
2. Those WERE based on month-by-month sales figures from NPD. They are usually pretty accurate.
3. It wasn't Wiki that I got that from. it was someone on the N4G forums that brought that one up (yeah, big difference in source cred, I know, but at least it wasn't Wiki, right ). And I wasn't sure about the exact time frame the would require. It could be exactly a year or just 6 months or somewhere in between. Uncharted definitely wouldn't fail sale-wise, but it may not be in that time window yet (I guess).

You're still missing the point if that's the case. The problem is that they are monthly sales, and monthly, it's not doing that much better than the 360. Before I say this next point, which you will fixate on, let me point out I will continue without actually arguing the NPD numbers.

However, while we're speaking of numbers, the NPD numbers leave out some really important retailers and e-tailers, and so they actually may not be accurate. People fellate them like they're the second coming, but the fact is, that's not a good way of building a study of sales. It's kind of like taking polls for the Presidency and excluding Texas and North Carolina.

That aside, you've managed to repeatedly miss the point. This is no exception.

The above aside, I haven't criticised the NPD numbers yet. Nobody opposing your statements has criticised them in the many times they've been brought up. The problem isn't the NPD. Well, NPD is a potential problem, but we're not having that argument. You keep insisting shit that is not consistent with the numbers you're providing.

I mean, the NPD numbers show a what? .06 million increase in 4 months? Well STAND BACK MICROSOFT!!!!!

Hasney has already made the point that it will take 31 months to catch up at the current rate at which Sony is leading. I made the same point in a prior thread. Twice.

If you take to heart those NPD figures, the slight increase will yield a bonus of a quarter of a million sales. That will decrease the American deficit down to 6.44 million consoles in favor of the 360. Do you understand how huge that difference is? Even in a "dead heat," the 360 has the larger installed user base. Slight increases in sales aren't going to change the landscape, drastically or otherwise.

I don't know why this point keeps going over your head. You've attacked me for ignoring the current weekly sales improvement, even as I acknowledged it. You've then gone on to miss the point that it seems everyone else understands: That the 360 is still winning. Leading for eight months means nothing if it doesn't even dent the current sales lead.

And that's why I call you a moron. Well, that and ignoring the number of people who disagreed with you, found the one person who had the same train of thought (Noid), and went on like you were vindicated, despite being in a clear minority. And your "only a fanboy" rants, including the one where you demonstrated you know nothing about trademark and copyright law.

I bring that up only because it offers such a spectacular parallel to what you did here. Even when explained to you, you try and make it about something else. Something convenient, something that generally both ignores the actual matter and allows you to nail yourself up on that cross again.

And when nobody else agrees, you blame it on their fanboyism. It's not that you're wrong, it's that everyone who disagrees with you is a fanboy. Funny how that works.

So...July saw the PS3's lead on the 360 slow to 20K units, and August saw the 360 beat the PS3 by 10K units.

Source? The same Wiki site darkpower referenced, with documentation and quotes from NPD. I've already made my statements about NPD and Wikis, but you can consider this a "by your logic...." post, because it's not my site or my evidence.

It's worth noting that this is prior to the results of the price cut.

What this doesn't mean is that the 360 is going to pull away as of the price cut. It may, but this is more about how demonstrably stupid it is to assume the big buildup to a game will translate to long-term trends.

We'll see how things progress, but darkpower's logic was stupid from the get-go.

On topic, the only greatest hits games I have seen in the shop so far have Been Assassin's Creed, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and Resistance Fall of Man.

Out of those three we have, only one of them makes sense to me.

But then again, the PS2 had a crap ton of random games in the GH section, many that were on the GameCube and 360. So whatever works.

LOL. The Gamecube's GH made less sense. Player's Choice, or whatever it was called. The number of random "wtf" titles on there was astounding.

Greatest Hits don't have to be exclusives, though. The only one on that list I could say doesn't make sense is NGS, but only because I don't remember it selling well. Assassin's Creed did well on all the platforms it was released on, didn't it? And Resistance was one of the only well-selling exclusives near launch.

Though the primary idea behind the GH/PC/Whatever is to move games when sales start dwindling. They're "Cheap Seat" games, but by that point, the initial costs are more or less covered and they don't need to charge as much, so they can cut the price to up sales. There's also a secondary effect. So many cheap games made the PS2 so worth owning, because you didn't even have to spend a lot of cash to get a good library going. That can help console sales.
