Nah she said a 'senior source' told her that. Which, and I know this is semantics, means its not really official, and they have deniability.

Or she could just be making it up.

Why doesn't Paul Scholes get any stick for not playing for England? Wayne Rooney clearly isn't the same player for England as he is for Manchester United, and Scholes is clearly still a world-class midfielder for United. Isn't there a possibility that playing Scholes instead of Frank Lampard might help Rooney be the beast for England that he is for United?

Emperor Smeat
06-21-2010, 11:46 PM
He retired in 2004. According to Wikipedia he didn't have that long of a career with England at just 7 years (1997-2004). He also had the tendency to pick up too many cards during competitions similar to Rooney.

England's problem is they want to make Rooney their main striker but their play style or formation doesn't allow that to be possible constantly with the type of players they have on the field.

BCWWF
06-22-2010, 12:21 AM
I know he retired, and that's my point. He is obviously still as capable as ever to play for England, and would seemingly be the best fit to play with Rooney.

Scholes retired after Euro 2004 when we had this "OH MY GOD, THERE ARE NO LEFT FOOTED ENGLISH PLAYERS" crisis (like we still have now) coupled with the "LAMPARD AND GERRARD ARE THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE WORLD AND MUST NEVER BE DROPPED" (like we still have now) which resulted in Scholes (right footed and a better central midfielder than Gerrard or Lampard) being played on the left wing for Euro 2004. From what I remember he was shit and got fed up and retired.

So what Rob Ban Fan is saying is basically that Scholes could in fact be the missing link for England but that he has chosen not to play because of a bad experience with a manager who has been twice replaced now? I can understand that playing internationally is a huge time commitment, but it's a little surprising that he doesn't get any flack for not playing.

I would think that England would try to build itself as much like Manchester United as possible, rather than whatever they have going on now.

Emperor Smeat
06-22-2010, 05:12 PM
It worked in Euro 04 because none of the bigger teams thought of using that formation as a way to win since its more of a traditional formation done in league cups by smaller teams to hope for an upset or in some league a "replay".

Greece's problem was by the time of 2006 qualifiers, most of the tougher teams figured out how to break down their defensive formation while Greece never bothered to switch and caused their matches to be "boring".

Yes the objective in those games was to avoid defeat, tonight with 20 minutes to go a goal would have put them into the next round and they still just resolutely defended like pricks before Argentina broke them down.

Regarding the whole John Terry thing, he fucked himself over the minute he started talking about himself as being a born leader and all that self aggrandising shite. As a columnist in the Times said today, he essentially did a Scargill. Might well've spoken for a fair few of the players beforehand, but as soon as he made it about him, he showed his true colours and lost said support in an instant.

Their objective in every game seems to be avoid defeat, no matter what the situation is. Seems to be all Rehagel is willing to attempt with them. They didn't really attack at Euro 2004, just seemed to rely mainly on set pieces.

Come on, winning 3 knock out games isn't luck. They had a game plan and executed it perfectly. Unfortunately for them, it just isn't sustainable and haven't bothered to try much else.

CSL
06-22-2010, 06:14 PM
They've been playing the same way for like 9 years and that's the only thing resembling success that they've had (albeit a big success) Of course they executed their plan well. But in order for them to win games (and especially a tournament) with that plan, they need luck. The amount of wasted chances from other teams that year was shocking. They obviously didn't win strictly by luck, you have to give them credit for being so disciplined, but without it, they wouldn't have gone past the quarter finals.

Red hot? They were shit in the opening game of the tournament (against Greece), had things go their way against England (Rooney injury, disallowed goal, pens) and didn't play too well in the final (but still should have scored)

I honestly can't believe he was still the manager, he should have gone after the Euros (and nearly did). The french FA deserved everything that happened to them at the World Cup after leaving him in charge (wasn't specifically his fault but he's proven that he wasn't really capable of running that team)

Team Sheep

Well yes. They were the host nation, one of the favourites to win it going in, and got to the final. Don't see your argument.

CSL
06-22-2010, 07:56 PM
'Red hot' implies they were playing something akin to Holland in 1974 (or even the Czechs in that tournament) Which they were not. They were decent. No better than the other 5-6 favourites for the tournament.

Besides, this was 6 years ago.

Team Sheep
06-22-2010, 08:04 PM
Hot enough to make it all the way to the final ahead of all the other 'favourites', where they lost to Greece, for the second time. And that's luck?

Hey you brought it up

CSL
06-22-2010, 08:23 PM
I didn't say Portugal didn't play well, my problem was with 'red hot'. Which I figured you'd have worked out from my first sentence. And yes, for Greece, it was a lot of luck. An anomoly. Only thing that's come close was Denmark in 1992 and then there were only 8 teams, they had a couple of legit quality players, a decent supporting cast and Peter Schmeichel. If they replayed Euro 2004, I believe 99 times out of 100 Greece don't win it.

And I bought it up to point out the correlation between how they play now and how they played when they had their only real success (aka the same). Not go back and forth about the specifics of the tournament.

I had a good feeling about South Korea coming into the World Cup, but I was also in the camp that was overly optimistic about the African contingent and thought South Korea would finish third behind Nigeria. While it's disappointing to see Africa pretty much fall flat here — Ghana is the only team that could have a chance to do anything, but even getting to the quarters at this point is a long shot — it is still cool to see teams like Korea and Uruguay showing well. I'm guessing Africa will make a big improvement in 2014 though.

I thought Greece played very well and were unlucky not to hold on for the draw - if only Samaras' shot had gone in...regardless a draw wouldn't have been enough anyway and like I said earlier the South Korea 2-0 loss in the first game was what really fucked us. What I hope now is that due to some of the older farts retiring Otto (or whoever replaces him) starts playing the younger players who are more attack minded and as a result build a more attacking team in time for Euro 2012 qualifiers. Say what you want about Greece but Otto could only make tactics that played to the team's strengths, which was largely defensive minded. Of course, alot of luck needed to go our way but the history books will say Greece 2004 European champions. A lot of luck also needed to go our way this morning (or last night for most of you guys) and it didn't, that's football. Seriously though, I just wanted a goal and/or a point from this World Cup for Greece, after the debacle of USA '94 and as a result I'm satisfied. Hopefully next time we can qualify with a more attacking side and try and get out of the group stages.

Sounds like the US game was exciting! Great feeling to nick a game right at the death!

Yeah that plus all the added stress of two wrongfully disallowed goals, England controlling their game and forcing the US to win, about 45 missed chances in front of goal, and the Algerians playing like cowards. The weight on the shoulders was tremendous and then in one fell swoop, it was all gone. Amazing feeling. Gonna be euphoric all week.
