South Africa

Well its all coming up soon, few weeks time the domestic leagues will end and the media will go into overdrive hyping it up beyond belief. Right now I'm simply hoping Henry either doesn't get to a play a single minute of it due to injury or instead spectacularly injures himself scoring an own goal to knock France out. NEVER FORGET.

Would love to see Messi drag Argentina to glory regardless of Maradona not really having a clue what hes doing. Rooney to cave under the expectations of a nation would be quite comical. Spain look the team to beat with most groups looking like they should be on paper achievable for the favourites. Ivory Coast to pull off something of an upset and send the Portuguese home in the home group stages for my first shock of the tournament.

Anyway the coding for that thing has taken me ages as I'm a little stupid so this better get some use.

If I was a gambling man and I most certainly am despite what I've said above I think I'll be having a few quid on Portugal with 33/1 on offer for themselves. Love staking loads of little bets on the world cup, might have a bit of Tevez 50/1 top scorer each way also.

What price are England over in Ireland/anywhere else?

Here they're 5/1 (or thereabouts) which is very short considering teams like Italy are around 12/1, and we're pretty shit.

Could be, but I think Torres will get it, unless he gets injured AGAIN. Spain's group is relatively 'easy', if he's fit he could get 4 or 5, maybe more from the group stage alone.

They do player, I remember some UK/Irish horses running in US races and being short-odds over here but much longer-odds over there. Massive differences too, one was something like 7/4 over here and 9/2 over there. It won too.

Unless football/sports prices don't vary? If that's the case I'm sure you'd find someone on BetFair who'd be offering much more than 6/1 for an England win.

I filled out a mock World Cup on ESPN.com I believe, and there are some pretty intriguing matches that cold come. What I did (obviously biased) had the U.S. finishing second in the group and then getting a fairly easy round of 16 draw. Will be interesting.

But like ECG said, it's too easy to look at these groups by two top teams. In reality, most World Cup groups have one great team and three good teams that aren't separated by much. Just hope the US doesn't get caught up in their own hype.

I'm looking forward to Group A though. Will South Africa get out of their group? If so, who fails, France or Mexico?

Lastly, I fully expect the USA-England game to be the most hyped soccer game in US history to this point. It's a Saturday day game here, so everybody can watch it. Plus, the English national team is probably the most popular team in this country.

Why are you supporting 3 countries? Aren't you American?

Yes but my parents are Portuguese (Azores Islands) and since the Portuguese League is always on tv here, I've been a fan of them.

Brazil is because WC '94 was the 1st World Cup I ever watched on tv and liked how well they played and then learned how rich their soccer history is.

USA is because I'm American and it would be nice to generate something similar to WC 2002 since it would both help the MLS popularity and soccer's status here.

Ray Houghton scores my favourite goal of all time in the same game that Paul McGrath cemented him place as my favourite player of all time by producing the best 90 minutes of football in football history and turned me into an Aston Villa fan. The single greatest football game I'll ever see I'm sure and thats almost a bit depressing given I was 8 at the time.

Whats almost better is if I was 5 years older I'm sure Houghtons other famous goal would be my favourite instead, what a hero.

OH AH PAUL MCGRATH

And because I wish to wax lyrically about him some more for those who don't know Paul McGrath finished his career with basically no cartilage left in his knees, he used to spend all week just doing weights in the gym with no football training at all as his body wasn't up to it then spend 90 minutes on a Saturday man marking an entire attack without moving at all by his pure positional brilliance.

I remember watching that goal live, was about 9 years old.

I really can't wait, managed to book the first week and a half of the tournament off work so I'll be able to watch a few games and not have to listen to all the 'new' football fans at work.

I'm gonna be cheeky and put a fiver on Brazil not getting out of there group, and England to lose to Germany in the second round.

Prof Metin Tolan, a German physics lecturer, has written a formula based on trigonometry which analyses results from previous World Cup finals in order to predict the winner of this summer's tournament.
Germany have won the World Cup on three occasions, in 1954, 1974, and 1990 with an average finishing place of 3.7, and Prof Tolan says his formula proves without any doubt that his home country will prevail in South Africa.
"It is very simple, all my calculations prove this," he told German magazine "Zeit Wissen".
"The last time we won the World Cup was back in 1990 and there have been four tournaments since," explained Tolan.
"The average finishing place of the Germany team is 3.7 and the German team wins the title every fourth or fifth World Cup.
"Nobody can beat us this year and you can already put the champagne on ice."
Prof Tolan is clearly undeterred from his previous failed formulas, after he predicted that Germany would win the last World Cup which they hosted, as Jurgen Klinsmann's side were defeated by eventual victors Italy in the semi-finals.
"My formula gave the winner for the following World Cup, this is why it works this time for sure," Tolan explained.
The Professor's equations should also help England, who crashed out of the last World Cup after being defeated on penalties by Portugal, as he has a theory for shoot-outs too.
"The weakest kicker should take the first penalty, then the second-weakest and so on," he said.
"Then you have the greatest chance of scoring as many goals as possible."
Germany face Australia, Serbia and Ghana in Group D in the first stage of this summer's finals and could face England as early as the second round.

It would be pretty easy to predict a winner for the cup since its always between the Big 4 (Germany, Italy, Brazil, Argentina) as the favorites and then a random team who enters the tournament hot (2010 = Spain) and France depending on their momentum.

Most Americans do this. I know I do. I'll be intently following both the US and France. It's one of the neat little peculiarities of living in a country completely made up of immigrants. But it's also a product of the US having limited success on the world stage. You root for America, but when they're eventually knocked out, you can continue to support your heritage. But some people just root for a good team too even if they don't have ancestry there.

But yeah pretty much every American does this except for the Mexican immigrants who never root for America at all.

That sounds silly to me. You're American and the United States are in the World Cup so I don't see why you have to have 2 or 3 countries to "support". The World Cup is the ultimate symbol of patriotism. Even if you only take an interest every four years, you should stand by your nation. Wales haven't qualified in over 50 years, and fuck knows if they even will in my lifetime, so you don't know how lucky you are to have your country to follow in the tournament almost every time.

Has to do with the history of the U.S. being relatively young compared to the centuries old European and certain Asian nations while also being made up from a large diversity of people.

Mix this huge diversity with the fact of the "youth" of pro-level soccer in the U.S. (USL was too short and a long time ago), it makes sense for someone to be a fan of their family's "home" country and the US.

There was soccer before the 1970s but mostly amateur leagues and teams while the USL was the first big pro-league to get attention and MLS is the current generation pro-league for most USA fans.

Hanso Amore

I dunno, rooting for multiple teams on different levels is an american thing I guess.

Most people have "their" team. They also have other players and shit they like.

Ultimately, I think we all want the US to win. But should they get eliminated, we are still going to watch those other teams and players we like.
Its not like I am going to be wearing a Dogba jersey with my face painted blue and yellow and an American flag. they are not all on the same level.

The IF My team doesnt win, I dont want x team to win, but I do want X team to win stance is common ground/

Most people I know, being from Liverpool and having a strong spanish influence in our team, supported Spain and I was fine with that, but I still didn't exactly support anybody. Although in the end I was happy to see Reina, Torres, Alonso etc doing well and winning.

But yeah pretty much every American does this except for the Mexican immigrants who never root for America at all.

yea, this. My great grandfather came though Ellis Island in NY from Czechoslovakia, so I first and foremost root the the USA in every world games, but support the Czech Republic as well. And my other side of the family came over from Ireland, but they usually aren't that good in sports.

I know a lot of my generation has parents, grandparents or certainly great grandparents that came over from Europe and a lot of people celebrate thier heritage here. And I am from NY right outside NYC, so pretty much every kid I grew up with had someone in thier family from Europe.

Keep in mind, rooting for multiple teams may not be the best thing, but it's an improvement over the apathy most Americans feel about the world cup. Ask the average American how the USA will do in the world cup, they'll reply "What the hell is the world cup?"

I don't understand what's wrong with rooting for multiple teams. It's not as if we'd ever root against america. If any of these second or third picks go up against U.S., we will be rooting for U.S. I mean, it's not as if we paint our faces, buy jerseys, and go nuts for these other teams, like we do for the U.S.

Do you just not watch the world cup at all when your team is out?

It doesn't seem as fun to watch the world cup just to watch it, after your team gets knocked out. It's always more fun when you have someone to root for. If they win, it won't be even close to the same as your home country winning, because you don't have that emotional investment in the team, but it still feels good.

Crimson
05-10-2010, 09:50 PM
Yea I usually root for USA/Mexico first. Then any team from North/South america next. So I usually end up rooting for Brazil in the end.

But I only watch soccer when the World cup rolls around and I think it's pretty fun and entertaining. So to each his own..there's no rules to what number of teams one can root for.

Nah, you've got Hahnemann

US played the better football overall, honestly, albeit lacking much of a cutting edge. Cole neutralised Donovan fairly well, he'll come alive in the other games. Carragher could've been sent off in another game, and if Altidore could finish it could easily have been 2-1. Should get through the group easily - depending on how it turns out US can make the quarters again, no problem.

Can't believe it's 2010 and the England team contains Rob Green, Jamie Carragher, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Emile Heskey and Peter Crouch. Good god :nono:

What the hell was up with our passing? So many shitty passes. And I'm not talking long balls either, but short stuff. While under little to no pressure. Inexcusable at this level that we had so many give aways.

wowz they hit the post ONCE

Which was the closest either side came. To say they did nothing 2nd half is a gross simplification. Heskey had the one on one but other than that England did not create a significant chance on goal in the 2nd half. Call it bad luck, call it last ditch defending, whatever.

Londoner
06-12-2010, 05:15 PM
What im on about is we dominated posession, and chances created. Heskey let us down at the crucial moment. I've been one of his supporters but im starting to get frustrated with him, it aint a joke anymore.

Sixx

I don't know about posession in the whole match but it was 51-49 for USA at the beginning of the 2nd half. Couldn't see much of the 2nd half cause the broadcast was shit cause of massive storm.

Mr. Monday Morning

Possession means nothing without incisive play. We spent a ton of time knocking it around the back four without going anywhere.

It's eerily like 2007. Pass it about the back while under no pressure, get bored/frustrated/tired, hoof it to the target man, try to feed off scraps. South Korea keep the ball better than we do.

US played pretty shit in that game. They showed signs (Altidore, Findley,) of greatness at points, but overall they were not good. Thier passing game made me want to rip my hair out and they dragged thier feet a lot of the time within the first 25 minutes when thier legs should be fresh. Obviously we caught a lucky break, but Howard was fucking incredible. He saved the game about 5 times.

It always seemed like England had more players on the field, which says a lot about the game. They surrounded the USA on midfield defense, but USA played pretty good defense in thier goal, except for the Lampard goal.

Loose Cannon
06-12-2010, 05:51 PM

Hahahaha good ol Green, backed 1-1 and USA to top the group before the game. USA could easily top it now by just hammering Algeria or something. England were fucking awful tonight. Despite being the least hyped team in English history they are still overrated to a huge degree.

As for tonight, we deserved to win for once, shame that their wasn't any Japanese guys to put the ball in the back of the net for us.

I don't specifically remember the chance you're referring to, I seem to remember him having the ball in the penalty area and then making a complete dog's dinner by hitting it straight at Howard from the angle, is that what you mean?

Because SWP is shit, and won't score from there 99999/100000 times.

I recall (admitedly, in a slightly drunken state) Lennon looking dangerous the few times he was allowed to run with it from the right. And the US pretty much parked 6 or 7 men in the middle every time we came forward, so why we didn't try on the wings more often I don't know.
