Would laugh if someone this came back to bite Girardi assuming both teams managed to make it to the ALCS because now he would have given the Rays the confidence to beat them.

Red Sox-Os resume at 11pm

LOL it's so true, what Harold Reynolds said. Coming into the season, the "big news" out of Tampa were the signings of Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez. THAT WAS IT. Carlos Pena was gone, Carl Crawford was gone, Matt Garza was gone.

Who would've thought that Carl Crawford, who signed with Boston, would be at home watching the Rays in the Playoffs?

So incredible.

Emperor Smeat
09-29-2011, 12:36 AM
Can't blame it on him though since he finally started hitting good enough and for a while was the #1 hitter for the month in the entire league.

The pitching (1 win between Beckett and Lester till yesterday) and the bullpen killed the team the entire month. Francona also takes some of the blame for not reacting quicker along with the GM who had no backup plan once Buccholz went down.

Tampa's #1 starter was horrible today but the Yankees tanked enough to put him off the hook and Tampa's series against the Red Sox helped them a lot for the month.

My order of preference for WS champions:

1. Tigers (soft spot for Detroit teams, plus Verlander is the man)
2. Rays (may as well be 1-A, incredible story)
3. Diamondbacks (worst to first, and then some...can't go wrong)
4. Brewers
5. Rangers
6. Cardinals
7. Phillies
8. Yankees

Honestly 4-6 are basically interchangeable, but I'd be happy with any of them. The top 6 teams to me will pretty much just be the Alliance to End PhilkeeMania

I really do hate the Rays more than the Yankees. They spend all year biting your ankles in an empty stadium and then come September the fans decide to show up and give themselves Mohawks and cover themselves in blue. If I lived in a great baseball city with a bad team, like Kansas City or Pittsburgh I would still hate them just as much. The Yankees do have their fair amount of diehard fans who will support the team no matter how bad they suck.

He's also better than your shortstop. I actually went to the Phillies message board and, sure enough, they were blasting him...giving him more hate than I've seen one fanbase give a player. All for a guy who, yesterday excluded, has been a class act since he entered the league.

Bet the fans will change their tone if he joins the Phillies.....not out of the realm of possibility given that Rollins has said he wants 5 years.

I don't know about Paps. If I remember correctly the exact game before he nearly ended the Sox right there on Tuesday. I really don't think Papelbon will be back in a Sox uniform. If I were them I would either take my chances with Bard or trade for another closer.

Evil Vito
09-29-2011, 02:20 PM
I've already said it was a bad move on his part, because almost everybody at the game went to see him. Some people probably got to their seats late and missed seeing Reyes' likely last Mets game.

As far as the batting title goes, I'm not too bothered by it because he's hardly the first guy to do this. And it seems like a silly award for him to get worked up about in general, batting average is nice but hardly a huge achievement. It'd be more impressive had he not missed about a month's worth of at-bats.

Yeah, this feels like the first year in quite some time where it's wide open. Phillies are even money favorites but it's really a toss up. Expecting to be dead wrong on my predictions.

I don't know about Paps. If I remember correctly the exact game before he nearly ended the Sox right there on Tuesday. I really don't think Papelbon will be back in a Sox uniform. If I were them I would either take my chances with Bard or trade for another closer.

I think Bard showed this year that he isn't ready to be a closer. He's been bad on the road, and he was pretty miserable overall in the last 2 months of the season. Although it sounds like it's mostly mental so the ability is there.

Papelbon rebounded from 2010. He didn't allow a run from July 17 until September 20, then he blew two games including last night. If Pap isn't re-signed next season it'll be because he and the front office don't see eye-to-eye on a new contract. I think he wants 4 years if I remember correctly.

Agree. Red Sox have to at least be somewhat competitive in the bidding war for him because Bard basically went south in progression and even when he was good this season, he still had issues with HRs and bad hits.

2nd year in a row where the bullpen caused too many problems especially once the final month occurred.

I got Phillies vs Tigers as the favorites for the WS although I could see the Phillies get eliminated in a shock against the Cardinals.

Perfect: Dodgers’ Eugenio Velez sets record with 0-for-37 season (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Perfect-Dodgers-Eugenio-Velez-sets-record-with?urn=mlb-wp21402)

By David Brown (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew?author=David+Brown)
http://l.yimg.com/a/p/sp/editorial_image/d5/d5b88edeb61601d7d0c21fa8716ad788/perfect_dodgers_eugenio_velez_sets_record_with_for_season.jpg

Hank Aaron has been quoted as saying: "Guessing what the pitcher is going to throw is 80 percent of being a successful hitter. The other 20 percent is just execution." But then there's Eugenio Velez (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/8128/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/8128/news).

A reserve infielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/lad/), he set a Major League Baseball record Wednesday night, grounding out in his only at-bat to finish the 2011 season 0 for 37.
No hits. Thirty-seven at-bats. Never before in modern baseball history had a non-pitcher with that many at-bats gone hitless in a season. As Grant Bisbee of SB Nation noted in a Velez appreciation post (http://mlb.sbnation.com/2011/9/1/2397446/eugenio-velez-hitless-streak-dodgers-news) on Sept. 1, Hal Finney went 0 for 35 for the Pittsburgh Pirates (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/pit/) in 1936.
But wait, there's more (or less)! Going back to 2010, Velez is hitless over his past 46 at-bats, which also is a record — in the view of some. Four players, including Milwaukee's Craig Counsell (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5547/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5547/news) this season, had gone 0 for 45. In 1909, Brooklyn's Bill Bergen did likewise, as did San Diego/St. Louis/Houston's Dave Campbell (recently of ESPN) in 1973.
That's if you want to count a hitting streak (or a not-hitting streak) that covers two seasons. Some dubiously claimed that Jimmy Rollins (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6419/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6419/news), who ended the 2005 season with hits in 36 straight games, was still pursuing Joe DiMaggio's 56-game streak when the 2006 season started. Hey, if the Cubs get to start every season 0-0, so do the players.
But 0 for an entire season (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?id=velezeu01&t=b&year=2011)? That's definitely a thing.
Velez came off the bench in most of his appearances this season, but Dodgers manager Don Mattingly gave him a start a week ago Friday, when he went 0 for 3 to eclipse Finney's mark. As reporter Dylan Hernandez wrote in the Los Angeles Times (http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-0929-dodgers-fyi-20110929,0,6816922,full.story), Mattingly faced a tough decision in the season's final days: Should he keep letting Velez swing away in pursuit of his first hit since May 2010?Mattingly used Velez as an eighth-inning pinch hitter, offering the utility player a chance to hit his way out of an undesirable record. But the well-intentioned move backfired, as Velez hit into another ignoble record.
http://l.yimg.com/a/p/sp/editorial_image/51/510e7aef54e9f37a86d79476cb0ae4a6/perfect_dodgers_eugenio_velez_sets_record_with_for_season.jpg

Ignoble? Au contraire! Velez is King of the Oh-Fers! And, hey, he drew two walks and somehow contributed an RBI this season. Take that, Finney (pictured (https://www.mearsonlineauctions.com/LotImages/28/773e6026-2655-47ee-97ac-fac684bbfad4_lg.jpeg)). At least Velez got on, Mr. No On-Base Percentage (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?id=finneha02&t=b&year=1936)!
The 0-for-37 streak might be upsetting, embarrassing and even depressing, but at least we'll know Velez for something other than his famous jersey misadventure.
You might remember that, when Velez played for the San Francisco Giants (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/sfo/) in 2010, he wore a jersey sent by Majestic that read "San Francicso (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Another-year-another-jersey-FAIL-Eugenio-Velez?urn=mlb-232837)" on the front. Sick is right.
Has someone been trying to tell Velez that he doesn't belong in the majors?
As Bisbee wrote, it would be a shame if he never got another chance to break his hitless streak. Velez is awesome in his own, unique way:If you're not Giants or Dodgers fan, you might not have heard of him until just now, but he's amazing. He's fast, but he can't run the bases. He certainly can't bunt. You might think Steve Carlton holds the all-time record for pickoffs with 144. You'd be wrong. Velez has about 167 (rough estimate). He can't play second base or the outfield, which makes him like a Jack Cust (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6626/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6626/news), but one who is routinely stuck at second base, or in the outfield. When Velez plays baseball, Hunter Pence (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7963/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7963/news) stops to say, "My word, that Velez fellow is gangly and awkward."
And his middle name is "Vancomper." So that's the scouting report on Eugenio Velez. Will we ever see his likeness again?

That's why I like whipping their butt. It's great, knowing those guys with the $205 million payroll are saying, 'How the hell are they beating us?'"

That was Buck Showalter in an interview for the April edition of Men's Journal magazine. Showalter had to back down from his comments as Boston manager Terry Francona got mad. Buck's looking pretty smart today. And Boston has to be wondering, "How the hell did they beat us?" this morning.

If Buck Showalter ever managed a GOOD TEAM, with a lot of money, big time free agents and the like, he'd be a multi-World Series winning manager. I love him.

All the teams he manages become winners and go to the World Series after he leaves them. Yankees, D'Backs, Rangers. Hopefully the same will happen in Baltimore. It's clear the man knows his baseball and does something right.

He leaves and then they win the World Series. Which is why im intrigued about what happens with that if he takes the GM position and steps down as manager..does that count as him leaving? should I be taking the odds on the Os to win the World Series in 2012?

also, having trouble coming to grips with the reality that the city of Boston hates Robert Andino now..

Showalter got the wrong team with the $205 million comment (Yankees at $205, Red Sox at $161 and 3rd behind Phillies at $172) but he's mostly right.

Showalter's problem is peaking with a team and then not able to do anymore such as putting the stones in place for the Yankees eventual dynasty in the late 1990s with Torre. Same with the Diamondbacks winning the title the year after he leaves. Only team it didn't occur was with the Rangers but that could be more to how bad the A-Rod contract hurt the team money-wise.

I don't blame Tito for the collapse, but his laid back attitude did not help in the stretch run. The front office was not prepared with enough pitching for the second half and they were caught with their pants down.

The intensity of baseball in Boston finally ate up Francona. I just can't think of a possible replacement though. Part of me wants to see Schilling or Varitek become the new skipper.

Going to miss Francona but at the same time changes were going to be done because of how bad the season ended.

Some damaging reports about him loosing control of the clubhouse for at least the last 2 years and the players almost not even caring in terms of conditioning and focus. The worst being the pitchers being too laid back and drinking instead of resting or conditioning themselves for the next start.

Also expected to be fired is at least the pitching and conditioning coaches with the 3rd base coach also a possibility.

I have no defense for Kawakami. He made seven million dollars in the minors this year. Lowe was unbelievable in September last year, and put up a solid first few years, but his contract was too long for sure.

However, have you seen the starting pitchers the Braves have lined up right now? We took a waiver on Beachy and he was outstanding all year. We have Jurrjens, Hanson, Hudson, Beachy, Minor, Delgado, Vizcaino, Teheran, and Medlen all able to start, and Lowe too if we really need him to. We aren't losing anyone in the bullpen any time soon either.

If the Braves could get some damn offense, the bullpen wouldn't need to hit the mound so much. Just awful awful years for Heyward, Prado, and Uggla (for the most part), and the worst I've ever seen out of McCann at the end of the year, who hit under .200 in September.

Tigers Game 1 lineup was meant to go against right-handed CC and instead got wrecked by the left-hander Nova. The Tigers have a separate lineup specifically for lefties but obviously couldn't do it because the hitting order can't be modified for the game.

It's so awesome to be able to watch the playoffs and not dislike any of the teams, so therefore, you can watch all games with a clear mind, and not really mind who wins each game. I literally wouldn't mind seeing any of the 8 teams win the whole thing (though I'd be especially happy if the Rays, Brewers or Rangers won).

I really hope the Yankees can beat Detroit, I have a bad feeling that they won't. Luckily for me my second favorite is the Brewers. I'd be especially happy if the Yankees won. But if the Brewers won the World Series I'd be fine with that too. As long as it isn't the Phillies.

A source for ESPN is saying the Red Sox GM is about 50-50 for leaving the club this offseason with the Cubs being the big frontrunners. The owner respects Theo enough that if he wants to leave and the Cubs offer Theo the GM and President titles, he is willing to remove the last year of the current Red Sox contract so that Theo can leave easily.

ESPN is also saying if Theo leaves, the Red Sox will either promote the assistant GM or go after a few names such as Oakland's Billy Beane.

I wonder is the Cubs will reunite Terry Francona and Thoe Epstein, in hopes of ending the Cubs' WS drought.

If Terry and Theo bring a Championship to the Northside...they will go into the HOF!

Damian Rey

I don't think a managerial change is going to change the Cubs' chances at winning a title. They have a lot of other issues that need be to dealt with in the player personell category before they dream about winning the big one.

With Beane, I'd be doubtful he'd take the job. He passed on it once already, and now that he has a critically acclaimed movie out that makes him look like a saint, he might be less inclined than last time to leave Oakland. Add to that he has some ownership stake in the A's, something he will have nothing of in Boston, and it could be a tough sell.

Also, the Red Sox's pitching staff blew up in their faces. Epstein focused so much on offense that their pitching staff top to bottom suffered and nothing was done mid year to alleviate the damage, thus their collapse last month. They need to focus on improving their starting rotation more so than grabbing a manager.

That's where Theo comes in.

And one year and a meh farm system isn't going to change that. When Theo came into Boston, he inheretied an already good team. Yes, he made some key acquisitions, like David Ortiz, but again, the Red Sox were already a very good baseball team when he was brought in.

The Cubs, meanwhile, have issues with their "staff ace" Zambrano, a shaky closer, lack of depth in both the pen and the rotation, question marks at 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base and RF. Soriano's horrendous contract is and lack of production isn't helping, either. Theo would be walking into a nightmare if he were to take the Cubs job. The Cubs are going in a completely different direction than the Red Sox were in 2003.

Aguakate
10-03-2011, 03:34 PM
Well, I'm not saying either Theo or Terry (or both) is going to come in and win the same year, or the next. But if they ever do get to turn things around, and if they reach the big goal, they'll go down in history.

Can't wait to see how much money Yu Darvish gets this off-season. Dice-K cost $51 million in the posting fee alone. Given that Darvish absolutely shits all over Dice-K, I can't see Hokkaido parting with Darvish for less than $60 million. So that'll be $60 million plus whatever Darvish himself gets in contract negotiations.

I don't even know how many teams would be willing to fork over that much. The Blue Jays are considered the "favorites" at this point for some reason, but are they really about to put up $110+ million on a Japanese pitcher? Hard to say.

If Hokkaido sets a reasonable minimum bid because they want to do what's best for Darvish, I could see damn near every team at least taking a run at it.

I think every team's scouting director has been over there to watch him.

Yankees might be in the mix, but I think we're afraid to get burned again. So we may pass.

Hisashi Iwakuma said he was gonna try to get in again. He might have better luck if he didn't ask for an insane dollar figure.

Triple Naitch

I think a lot of teams are going to be weary about bidding for Japanese pitchers now. Who was the last Japanese pitcher that actually lived up to the hype and price tag? Dice-K has been a bust lately, Koji Uehara didn't turn out like he was supposed to, and I'm not even gonna mention Kei Igawa. Darvish's team may still post him just so that they get some sort of compensation before he can freely leave for the MLB in a few years. I've read that the Blue Jays may go after him aggressively.

AJ has been known to surprise people. And bats fade in and out by game. Someone who goes 0 for 4 for 2 days may go 5 for 5 the next. I didn't think we'd rough up Verlander as much as we did last night. Stranger things have happened. Maybe I am just being way to optimistic. But, until I hear the words "The Tigers have won game 4 the Yankees lose" I am not giving up hope on them.

Wouldn't matter that much if Price had been good because the Rays haven't matched up well against the Rangers for at least the last 2-3 years in a row.
