Aramis Ramirez last Year
.300 .360 .540
27 HR 105 RBI
171 Runs scored
And his defensive metrics are similar.
COME ON, you.

Sure, so would I. Not at 20 million per for 7 years.
Mets should have dealt him at the deadline and they could have really got the rebuilding process going. Now they are going to overpay him to play on shitty teams and by the time they have a chance to contend again he will well past his prime.

As for the HOF, I think Bagwell finally get in. He should have been a first ballot guy, but at least he'll go in with Biggio (who is a lock).
Really hoping Piazza is a first ballot guy too...that being said if Bagwell had to wait 2 years I think Piazza will too. Any steroid era player will pay the price even if they've never been outright implicated.
The Condor
11-28-2012, 04:19 PM
Bagwell gets the shaft, I believe, due to the glut of good first baseman over the past 20 years. Hell, Mark Grace had more hits than anyone else in the 90's and he's maybe 15th best over that span. The position is, and always has been stacked and Bagwell is just a victim of that, but should be held in higher esteem because others (Palmeiro, McGwire) proved themselves to be frauds.
Hanso Amore
11-28-2012, 04:22 PM
Bagwell is almost guilty by association. Its like the voters look at anyone from that period, guilty or not, with that same disdain. Since he played with Cammaniti, and during the Juice era, surely he was juicing.
Bagwell was one of my favorites as a kid, really hope he will go in.

It really is bizarre to consider that Clemens, Bonds and Sosa will be shut out but Biggio, Bagwell, Piazza and Morris will go in over them. They were all excellent players, but watching baseball from the early nineties through mid-2000's you had a sense that Bonds and Clemens were the best position player and pitcher since at least 1970. But the others (insofar as we know) did it the "right" way.

Wright is as good as any of the game's best third baseman. He ranked at the top in defensive runs and uzr. 20 hr and 40 doubles. There isn't one third baseman who is miles better than him. The best at the position are making $16 mil. Wright's offensive numbers are up there with the best , he should paid like them. How can he not be considered elite when his numbers rank with the best third baseman in the game?

I have nearly two pages of my explanation that he is not elite. I dont feel the need to post them again. read the thread. I stand by it.
Wright is a better than average 3B. he isnt top 5 at this point in his career. His best years have gone by. He is on a shitty team. He is not a franchise player, and should not be paid like one.
This will be just another inept move by the mets.
Hanso Amore
11-28-2012, 04:42 PM
David Freese is superior to Wright in every way right now.
He isnt going to make 140 million. And if he did people would laugh at it. Its team and market that created this David Wright monster.
The Condor
11-28-2012, 04:53 PM
Market is a big deal when it comes to a players exposure and fans perception of him. For example, National League Edgar Renteria vs. Boston savior-turned-immediate goat Edgar Renteria. A good player with a resume has a subpar year in a major market that becomes a huge story and they release him. He later becomes an All-Star in Atlanta and becomes 2010 World Series MVP.

I think out of all the juicers or supposed juicers, Bonds would have the best shot although after getting "punished" for a few years by the voters.
His stats and career before the supposed juicing years (2000-2002?) was already Hall of Fame potential and most believe his juicing was due to jealousy from all the attention McGwire and Sosa got from their HR race.

Damian Rey
11-28-2012, 09:22 PM
Those three stats are the most telling of any offensive numbers. What's there to argue? Wright collects base his at higher percentage, makes less outs, and hits for far more power. To say Freese is better "in every way" is an asinine statement based solely on an uninformed opinion rather than fact.
Why don't you post "more important" stats. I'm not the one pulling claims out of my ass without bothering to do a little research. And before you do, don't even bother throwing RBI at me. Context dependant stat that cannot be influenced by the hitter himself.

Here's the ballot for this year's Hall of Fame voting. As stated on the bottom you need 75% of the vote to get in. But you also got 15 years/tries to get in. Dale Murphy and Jack Morris' time is running out, I think they might make it in on this.
Any other thoughts?

I know DH's are frowned upon by purists, but Paul Molitor is in and because of that I am all in for Edgar Martinez to get in, porbably not for a few years, but he was one of the greatest hitters I've ever seen. He was Griffey and A-Rod's protection, and an RBI machine.

Edgar was a monster. It should be noted he was held down in the minors longer than he should have been.

I could deal with taking on Chen for a year. Only making $4.5 million this year, still less than what Dickey is making. Johan-Harvey-Niese-Chen-Gee is a pretty good rotation. A step down from Dickey-Johan-Harvey-Niese-Gee, but still pretty good. Not to mention Zack Wheeler probably up at some point during the summer.
But Myers is exactly the kind of player the Mets should be jumping at. Young, under team control for 6 years at a low salary, and 30 HR potential.
I have my doubts the Royals end up pulling the trigger. Getting rid of Myers would be stupid.

$17 mil/year on the deal, too. No need for a no trade clause since his 10/5 rights kick in soon. This must have Vito doing back flips. He'll be 37 at the end of the deal. So, assuming he stays healthy and puts in at least 140 games/year, and his career slash line status in tact, the only rough years will be age 36 &37. The Mets did good here, imo.

As TPWW's friendly neighborhood Braves fan, I will say I'm happy Tommy Hanson is gone. His mechanics are awful, and he lost a good 7-8 MPH last year on all his pitches. He may be the easiest pitcher to steal a base against in the majors. And he is basically a bullpen's worst nightmare, he usually can only go five innings. And the Braves are apparently gearing up to spend some more cash, I'd imagine, so not a bad cost-cutting measure with the backlog (as much as you can call it that) that they have with starting pitching.
As for the Braves' bullpen, it honestly can't get much better at this point. Need a decent innings eater, maybe.

They traded Chris Young to Oakland (in a 3 way trade for Cliff Pennington & Heath Bell from Miami) because he sucks. But point taken.

Dickey's had three good years in a row, too. Well, two good years followed by one fabulous year. Been money since he came to the Mets. His 2011 season is often overlooked because of the 8-13 record, proof that wins and losses just aren't good metrics to use. Might be the best signing Omar Minaya made during his entire tenure.
One rumor floating around was Dickey for Arencibia and Gose. That would be an awful trade for the Mets. They have about 5 million lefty-hitting outfielders already. And Arencibia has some nice pop but can't be counted on to hit for a decent average or reach base consistently. Basically he'd be a righty Luca Duda.
Sounds like Greinke and Sanchez have to sign before teams might panic and offer more for Dickey than they already have. So it's unlikely to happen before the Winter Meetings are done.

Was very pissed when the cubs got rid of him. "A switch hiring OF who can play all three positions, has a little power and can steal bases? Nah....."

Can't wait till the white sox implode right after they promoted kenny williams and all his shitty trades which destroyed the farm, his sweetheart deals to old broken players, and terrible spending to supplant average teams to keep the illusion of sustained competitiveness come back to bite the team. Sincerely hope they start the year with guys like tyler flowers in the lineup so it gets as bad as it can.
It may be hard to believe, but this franchise is 1-2 years behind the Cubs at this point.

No, too easy.
I really like the way reisnsdorf runs his club. Shows a lot of loyalty all the way to the bottom. I just hate the love for kenny williams and how sox fan are so proud of themselves for no reason.
Kenny is the AL Brian sabean. He wins in spite of himself. All the moves he does go against normal thought. Hes escaped blame because the team is always "in it" even if they suck balls. They are about to face plant this year something fierce, and since he has deceimated their farm, and left the big league club with its best players being ready to fall off a cliff due to old age, or major injury risks, he has nothing left to trade to get a rebuilding project underway.
Sox fan are always so proud of their team, yet they have shit attendance and couldn't be bothered to show up even when the team is "in it" and the team treats its season ticket holders like gods while ticket reps at wrigley could care less if you live or die. They still think Tom gamboa getting beat up is funny.

Also, despite being a Cub fan, management on the business side thinks their shit don't stink. Ought to be fun to see what they try to do after selling out every game from 04-11 now that the team was bad, is bad, and is going to be bad for the next couple of seasons at least.
I'm an objective baseball fan who happens to be a cub fan who has been telling all his sox fan friends for the last 2 years that this is the season the Sox turn into the Houston Astros while providing the logic for my conclusion. The only response I get is "Sox R in it this year!" That's where the hate comes from. Cheers.

No and yes.
Kennys moves are not unconventional, they are extremely short sighted and pay off in very moderate ways. see Youk, liriano trades, and he gets credit here for doing the unthinkable when in this this case...no one wanted those guys.
Bean is different. He made a huge discovery and he used it to gain an advantage over other teams. Now that other teams have added his philosophyto their repetouir, he is once again limited by his budget. His model used in its purest form gets you the Seattle Mariners. Look, if you can get youk on a one year deal at a low price (dunno if 12 mil would be low but whatevs) while a rod works his way back why not?
He can still hit lefties, and will probably hit well enough at home to be passable. Not like tex is what he used to be either. So he's a 1b/3b/dh who can be traded at the deadline if everyone is healthy and going strong, if not he makes for a decent backup plan if someone goes down. Youl probably deal for him if something happens to a rod or tex anyway.

Think its possible he could play in a Chicago market although probably only as a White Sox player. Cubs media would probably rip him to shreds.
Only reason LA has worked out for him is due to the Angels only being an LA team in name only and not as an actual big market team. Would have been a lot different had gone to the Dodgers first.

I wouldn't say they made him into a major threat last year. His whole deal is Adam Dunn light (Fewer homers, slightly worse obp, but great glove, historically speaking anyway) and he had his worst season in quite some time last year. The 330 obp dosent cut it unless you hit 40 bombs. Like Dunn, he's got old slow man skills which means he likely washes out sooner than later. I wouldn't be surprised if he's done, but someone should take a flyer on him.
