Johan will be making his first ST start sometime this week. The plan was to get him 4 ST starts and then have him go Opening Day. Not sure that's realistic at this point. More likely scenario is Jon Niese starts Opening Day with the Mets carrying an extra bullpen guy and Johan on the DL. A Johan DL stint can be backdated in a way that he'll only miss one turn through the rotation.

The Mets will only go as far as their pitching takes them this year, so hopefully Johan can get 30 starts in.

We're losing to Mexico.

WTF is this fucking shit?

RoXer
03-09-2013, 12:57 AM
If Mexico wins tomorrow they're pretty much in. US will need Canada to win to stand a chance to advance. Meanwhile Italy wants to go 3-0 most likely.

This is ridiculous.

RoXer
03-09-2013, 12:58 AM
Crowd was very pro Mexican. Was hard to get people cheering for USA. Part lethargy part nothing to cheer about part getting drowned out by Mexicans. Might be easier to make some noise tomorrow.

RoXer
03-09-2013, 02:16 AM
Pretty funny, before the game Romo was on his way to the bullpen from the dugout. Everyone booed him. From pissed off Mexican fans to supportive USA fans booing good players to local D-Backs fans booing a rival Giants member. A very audible "Hey Romo, you suck!" was yelled to which he turned back, smiled, and tipped his cap. Makes me like him even more.

Keith
03-09-2013, 08:26 AM
The Mexican team seemed to be hungrier than the US.

Now, even if we beat Italy, if Mexico wins, they're in.

Fuck.

Supreme Olajuwon
03-09-2013, 08:59 AM
It is my understanding that if the US wallops Italy and destroys Canada and Mexico only beats Canada by a little bit, then the US advances based on the tie breaker which is run differential.

Maybe I'm wrong. It has happened before.

Evil Vito
03-09-2013, 09:35 AM
Yeah, I believe the US will need run differential. The announcers were discussing the ending to yesterday's Italy game was somewhat controversial because as soon as they scored their 10th run to invoke the mercy rule, the other run that followed didn't count. Now in Italy's case a lot would have to go the wrong way for them not to advance anyway, but in theory the mercy rule could screw somebody over. It's not likely - but it could happen.

Evil Vito
03-09-2013, 09:39 AM
I can't help but feel bad for Dickey. I had read his book and he wrote a whole section about his run in the 1996 Olympics and how disappointed he was that Team USA didn't win gold that year. So to see him basically get lit up last night as the ace of Team USA was disappointing. The dude looked genuinely upset in the dugout.

It probably should have been expected though. Dickey was horrendous in all 3 springs with the Mets. His knuckler doesn't really get going until his last ST start.

Also I had forgotten Karim Garcia existed.

RoXer

The first tie breaker is head to head record. Then it's run differential.

Supreme Olajuwon
03-09-2013, 12:47 PM
Ya but the US has to beat Italy for this to matter and Italy already beat Mexico so it'd be a three way tie and you'd have to do run differential.

I hear ya. I get it. Just sayin.

I suppose I should start getting ready to go see that.

This (Mexico vs. Canada) is honestly the most important game of the pool for all 4 teams so I hope there will be a lot of support from Mexico like last night. I'm hoping for like 20,000 people but I get the feeling there won't even be 5,000.

Didn't see the game but apparently it was due to a bunt by Canada while they were up by 6 runs.

There had already been several borderline plays on the bases when things got out of hand. A bunt single by Chris Robinson heightened the tension -- a WBC tiebreaker relies heavily on runs and the Canadians wanted to score. Third baseman Luis Cruz fielded Robinson's bunt and seemed to tell Leon to hit a batter.

Good stuff today. Crowd was 19,500 for Canada/Mexico. About what I hoped for. I left before the fights started and shit got rowdy. Kinda wished I stayed for that. USA/Italy crowd was a little less than that I would guess. Not very supportive/loud as the Mexican fans. Prolly because we still think this is a farce of a tourney in the back of our minds.

Place was jumping last night but tonight they didn't even open the upper deck for either game. I wonder if they will Canada/USA. Also if they're pushing back the time. This is a reminder to myself to check when I wake up.

I love the WBC. I think it's unfortunate that most of America doesn't give a shit. All of the other countries where baseball is huge, the WBC is a seriously huge deal.

I can only assume America doesn't care because we know the real MLB season will be starting soon...but still. The WBC is much more fun than a run of the mill Spring Training game.

Keith
03-10-2013, 11:26 AM
I think that playing in the WBC is much better for the players than playing regular spring training games. The atmosphere, the in-game situations, the adrenaline. You don't get that if you stay in spring training. I'd guess you get ready quicker, as a player, playing in the WBC and playing games that matter.

I mean, the statistics don't count towards the MLB, but you can't tell me the USA team wasn't pumped up last night, playing an elimination game.

Keith
03-10-2013, 11:37 AM
Holy shit, I just read Venezuela was eliminated in the 1st round. They're 0-2.

That whole pool was a "pool of death" though.

RoXer
03-10-2013, 12:19 PM
Ideally, this whole tournament would be the greatest thing ever if time weren't a factor. Like if everyone was dead and playing in heaven where we could take as much time as we want. Unfortunately, real life gets in the way and it doesn't quite work out logistically. MLB players aren't really prepared while some non MLB players are playing in the middle of their season and are in great shape. Big money players don't want to risk injury, lack of national pride from US because blahblahblha it's the same thing you've heard over and over. My point is, this tournament would be incredible if like we were all in purgatory and didn't have to worry about real life. This would be a perfect video game tournament. It's much better on paper.

I would love for these games to be actual series against each other and not just single games. This first round could be best of 3, so each team plays 9 games. Best overall records advance. But I actually like the double elimination for the next bracket so keep that. And then the semis could be best of 5 and championship best of 7.

That would never happen though. Not in this world.

RoXer
03-10-2013, 05:35 PM

Evil Vito
03-10-2013, 05:58 PM
Yep. If US loses this game, they finish last in the pool and will actually have to re-qualify for the 2017 tourney. Qualifiers happen in last 2016, after the MLB season has already finished.

Weird to think there could be a WBC without the US. :o

According to Wikipedia, its just last place teams that have to qualify, everyone else gets a spot for the next WBC.

MLB just took whoever was first to lose their 2 games in Round 1 from 2009 as a way to find out who had to qualify for this year.

I love the World Baseball Classic, I've watched most of the games in all of them so far. That being said, my biggest issue is people playing for countries that they're (very) loosely associated with. Monday will be decision time for a lot of veterans who are in big league camp as minor league invites. Thanks to a provision in the new CBA, most of them have outs in their contracts where the team must either tell them they've made the Opening Day roster, give them $100,000 to go to the minors, or release them. The idea is to give them a week before the start of the season to sign with another team that may want to put them in the bigs.

LaTroy Hawkins and Pedro Feliciano are in that camp for the Mets. Hawkins appears to be a lock for the team. I was really rooting for Perpetual Pedro, but at this point I can't see him making it. The guys fastball is about 84-85 MPH at this point. Think they may go with Robert Carson instead as he's already on the 40 man roster.

Marlon Byrd and Scott Atchison don't have early decision provisions, but they both appear to be locks as well.

Yeah he's been in their Top 3 for ranked prospects and took over Jose Iglesias spot as their top defensive prospect once he got called up.

Supposedly he's the backup plan regarding Ellsbury's future with them only trading Ellsbury if Bradley is good enough once he gets promoted at some point during the season. If not, they'll probably resign Ellsbury and develop Bradley for another 1-2 years.

Padres release "Sweaty" Freddy Garcia.

Yankees bring back Chien-Ming Wang. To a major or minor league gig is unknown.

Phillies release Yuniesky Betancourt.

Rockies sign Jon Garland to a 1-year, $500k deal. He can make up to $2 mil. in incentives.

Indians release Daisuke Matsuzaka. But the Tribe plans on working out another deal somehow to keep him around.

Kyle Lohse FINALLY has a home. Signed a 3-year, $33 mil. deal with the Brewers.

They don't want to pay his $100,000 veterans bonus that would have triggered this week. A new contract done after the deadline avoids that from happening till next year if he's still in the MLB.

The new deal would also be a minor league contract.
