What do you think, The Fraze? Do you think the Giants can make a comeback for the division or are you ready to call it quits? 17 games back is hard to make up but there's a lot of division games left. I suppose anything can happen.

Only 13.5 for the wild card. Seems doable.

What do I honestly think? Season's over, probably. What will I keep saying because I won't ever give up on any of my teams no matter how bad they are? We're not out until the math says so.
Used to watch all the games with my dad in the mid-90's when we were bottom dwellers.
RoXer
08-18-2013, 01:46 PM
Yeah. Seems like the wild card is the best chance. Obviously the Dbacks are in a better position to take the the division than the Giants and I still don't like their chances. But you never know. All it takes is a blowup from the Dodgers. Or the enivitble blowup from Pittsburgh. How great would it be if they choked and wound up 80-82. Hilarious.
One thing we're both in agreement about: Fuck the Dodgers.
The Fraze

I will not be able to stand the Dodgers going to/winning the WS. It will make me legitimately angry, they're the Raiders of baseball. I don't think the Giants will end up in last place in the NL West, maybe third. Not that the third place team in the NL West isn't embarrassing, it's just "less" embarrassing. Hoping the Pirates don't collapse. They deserve it.

I wake up to the sound of the house alarm, which is the voice of Bob Sheppard saying, "Num-ber Two, Der-ek Je-ter. You are in grave dan-ger. Num-ber Two." I look at the security monitor by my bed.
There's a stretch Hummer in my driveway. Mounted on top of the Hummer is a giant fiberglass head. Wearing a Yankees hat. The head is smiling. I can see that because it's illuminated by spotlights.
"Hey, Jetes," booms a voice from the speaker in the giant head's mouth.
I speak into the intercom. "Are you in there, Alex?"
"Nope. Still in Boston. Did you see the game tonight?"
"I did."
"They hit me, Jetes."
"I know they did."
"Hit me for playing baseball."
"It might be more complicated than that."
"I'm just exercising my collectively bargained right to play, Jetes. They know that."
"It was very upsetting."
"Did you see my home run?"
"I did."
"Total bomb. A-bomb for A-Rod."
"Very impressive."
"I'm back, Jetes."
"That's great, Alex."
"They've awakened the sleeping giant."
"OK."
"The sleeping giant is me, Jetes."
"That's good to hear. We could use it."
"Centaur mode."
"A centaur's not a giant."
"It's a giant centaur."
"I'm going back to bed, Alex."
"Giant centaur mode activated."
"Yeah, I got it. Can I go back to bed now?"
"Fine."
"Good night, Alex,"
"Sweet dreams, Jetes."
I watch as the top of the giant A-Rod head slowly splits opens to reveal a smaller A-Rod. An A-Rod torso mounted on a horse's body.
It's holding a bow.
And it fires a tiny fireworks arrow that explodes over the house.
Bob Sheppard's voice booms through the mansion again.
"Num-ber Two, Der-ek Je-ter. You are in grave dan-ger."
"Num-ber Two."
I put a pillow over my head, roll over, and go back to sleep.

08-22-2013, 12:04 AM
I just don't like players like him (and frankly this goes for any sport) who seem to blame their troubles so much on stupid things like the umpire calling strikes that they think are balls. That mentality is basically evident every time BJ comes up to the plate.
But, you know, BJ figured himself out in the second half last year, so it could happen. It's just not likely, having watched 95% of his at-bats this year.
Boomer

According to ESPN its because the Indians still weren't willing to offer Dice-K a spot on the main roster and the Mets top prospects are too close to their innings limit. Nobody else was really interested in Dice-K besides the Mets once he became available.
The team does not want to promote its top pitching prospects at Triple-A Las Vegas, Rafael Montero and Jacob deGrom, because both are facing team-imposed innings caps. In Montero's case, he does not need to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason for Rule 5 protection, either.

Dice-K wasn't very good in his debut. :( But as long as he can eat some innings that's all they really need him for.
Would have been interested in seeing Jacob deGrom since he's Rule 5 eligible and needs to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason anyway, but I can see why they wouldn't bother at this point. There will be spots open soon enough.
The Mets' 40 man is maxed out as is, and as best I can tell their only way to free up more room would be to transfer Hefner and Mejia to the 60 day DL since their will pitch again this year anyway. I imagine they'll do that to call up Matt den Dekker and probably some random veteran guy who had a good year in the minors.

FoxSports reports that the Angels are preparing to fire their manager and/or GM this offseason. Both have been bickering at each other ever since 2011 to the point the owner can't stand it anymore.
According to the report, ongoing philosophical differences between manager Mike Scioscia and GM Jerry Dipoto are likely to lead to owner Arte Moreno replacing one or both men.
The report states Scioscia and Dipoto have a strained relationship due to Scioscia's involvement in personnel matters. Dipoto expected autonomy when he was hired in October 2011, FoxSports.com reported, citing unnamed sources.

Scioscia should be out since the Angels are pretty much the Titanic. As for DiPoto, he made his bed when he gave Pujols all that money when he got in. He should stay there and suffer. Yankees fans and Cashman are going through it right now with the A-Rod deal.

08-26-2013, 12:19 AM
The triple crown doesn't "sound" that good, but if you think about it... it basically means you combine two really good types of hitters. Most hitters who hit for contact/batting average generally aren't good power hitters. Most power hitters usually are "boom or bust" and have middling BA. To lead the league in both BA and HR is pretty incredible. And to even be in the discussion of doing it again this year is simply astounding. Not to get too ahead of anything, but by all accounts it looks like he will finish the season leading in BA and RBIs, and is currently 4 back of Davis for HR. It's not feasible to think he could do it again.
Such a ridiculous player right now. If, by some cruel act of some higher power, it came out that Cabrera was on PEDs of any kind I would actually just give up on baseball because the sport would not be fun for me anymore. HEARTBREAKING, if you will.

I feel like the "moneyball era" had tainted the triple crown a bit. People look at those stats as outdated but still, even with appreciating other advanced metrics, the feat of leading the league in the 3 Old standard stats is fucking AMAZING. Cabrera put together perhaps the best hitting season of the last 50 years.

Beachy was my favorite Braves' pitcher last year, and I was pretty sad when he went out for Tommy John. I'm hoping news comes out soon that his arm isn't fucked again, but if it is, I'll be sad to miss watching him for basically two years. He pitched some this year, but he never looked great. Guess you can just hope that he comes back stronger after the (probable) surgery.
Evil Vito
08-27-2013, 10:48 AM
The thought with Harvey is that the constant 90+ MPH sliders he was throwing are what tore up his elbow. He might have to scale it back when he returns, which would be a shame as it's his best pitch.

And with the news that Harvey is out, the Mets have put about 5 players through waivers. Marlon Byrd has been claimed by a National League team and a trade is being worked out. Mets were hoping to keep everybody and shoot for .500 but with Harvey gone those plans have evaporated.
Was gonna go Thursday to see Harvey pitch against the Phillies. Doubt I'll bother now. No Wright, no Harvey, probably no Byrd, two bad teams, Carlos Torres pitching. Not really worth the $100+ investment when you factor in tickets, parking, food, gas, tolls, etc.

I had such high hopes for Ike. But with him eligible for his 2nd year of arbitration, I'd say there's a 50/50 shot of him getting non-tendered. Depends on if the Mets feel they can make a play for Abreu or find an acceptable alternative for around the same price Ike will be making (roughly $3.5 million).
What's kinda fucked is that $3.5 million would be an INCREASE for Ike after such a shitty year. Technically, the Mets can offer him the exact same salary as this year, or even 80% of this year's salary. But it never happens. Regardless of what the rules say, everybody gets an increase in arbitration whether they deserve it or not.

Not sure, but it's a multiyear agreement. Francesa confirmed it today. Mets are expected to announce their new radio home within 6 weeks, but really I can see them simply going to 880 AM where the Yankees are now. Basically just swapping stations.
I don't even think that much will change. The Mets announcers work for WFAN, but I'd imagine they'll be let out of their deals to follow the Mets to whatever station they're going to be on. He'll be at 3rd base next year, and Zack Wheeler will be in the rotation. Those are literally the only guarantees for next year's roster given that Harvey could very well get TJS and d'Arnaud has struggled so mightily they may sign a veteran to push him for the starting job.

Colby Rasmus got knocked out of the game by a ball thrown to him by Anthony Gose. Hit him right in the face because he wasn't looking. If that doesn't sum up the Jays season I don't know what does.

Oh and J.P Arencibia went 0 for 4 again. Struck out 3 times. Average down to .195. The chase is on!

There has been a lot of Heartbreak in the last 20 years for the Pirates but last night had to be up there with the worst. Leading 5-2 going into the 9th against the team you are fighting for a playoff spot. Somehow lose 6-5 in 10. Oy vey.

Pedroia looks like a guy that wears a tracksuit and drives around Beantown in a windowless white van full of tootsie rolls.
