The same criticism people have with the San Antonio Spurs. They really have no standout personalities and just play great fundamentals and for some reason people hate them.

In general it's difficult for me to get excited about teams that have won the WS recently. Dunno, I just like seeing different teams win it for some reason. Last year's final four left me with the Tigers as my only rooting option with the 2009, 2010, and 2011 World Champs in there.
Would love to see the Tigers or Dodgers win one. Boston last won it 6 years ago so that wouldn't be too bad either. But as my playoff predictions would suggest I do think the Cardinals are the best team in baseball. That pitching is just ridiculous, and they're set up to be contenders for years with that staff.
The only thing that would make another Cards WS tolerable would be Beltran finally winning one. :(

Move is so White Sox. They need to do a massive rebuild and they spend a huge chunk of cash on a Cuban hoping they get another Puig. Even if he is, does that team really compete for anything in the next few years?

Wasn't much of a real bidding war for him by teams. Of the three teams he had left, Astros only offered in the $50-$60 million range while the Red Sox went even lower at $40 million.

At the least this gives them all the leverage they need to have him retire gracefully or accept whatever the team throws at him. I don't really think they want him back, but they want to avoid a PR nightmare. White Sox fans love Paule and would be less than thrilled if they pushed him out the door. Not saying that isn't an option but its not a road they really want to go down.

Cards and red sox? No one really wins even if they are the best pound for pound teams. Didn't care much about the Dodgers other than I would like to have seen the new ownership rewarded for sinking lots of cash into the players. Same with the tigers. If they don't win in the next couple of years contracts like Fielder have the potential to crush them for years.

Think what kills me about the Cards is that they have won just as much, if not more than the Yankees and Red Sux the past 13 years or so, yet are still treated as a Midwestern, "that's cute" type of team. East Coast teams get no such treatment, they would be labeled as some sort of "Empire."

It's because the Cards create a their own success. How many key free agents do they really nab on a yearly basis? They draft and develop ridiculously well, and don't spend boat loads of money on their roster. They are unlike any team that made the post season. Mid market team that does everything right.
Wish the Padres would become the "Cardinals West".

I'd assume them not really being a big market team nor spending the huge sums of money every year to "buy championships" are a few reasons. Rarely crack the top 10 in payrolls during those years.
They win a lot because they've been really smart with putting together teams and having great luck than being an actual powerhouse in the NL.
Frank Drebin
10-19-2013, 07:37 PM
They let their premier player go in free agency a couple of years ago, and wound up getting better. That right there says a lot. It's also their ability to not just develop guys, but bring them up at a time when their skills fit the team needs. For a competitive team, its not only developing all stars, but solid regulars like Kolten Wong or Jon Jay.

Jim Leyland resigns as Tigers manager but won't be leaving the team entirely.
Jim Leyland won't return as manager of the Detroit Tigers next season, a decision he made on his own in September, when he met with Dave Dombrowski and told the team's general manager "it was time," Leyland said Monday morning during a news conference.
Leyland, 68, whose Tigers' season ended Saturday night after they lost Game 6 of AL Championship Series to the Boston Red Sox, said he would remain with the team in some capacity.
"I'm not totally retiring today, I just don't want to be in the dugout anymore," an emotional Leyland said.

Wow. 2nd game in a row the Red Sox lose because of a screw up from home.
Salty should have just kept that ball instead of being like Breslow last time.

I get that intent doesn't matter with obstruction, but was Middlebrooks supposed to not go for the ball and let it sail by him?

Maybe, but he was still out of the base-path he was on the grass. If Middlebrooks wasn't there he would have reached the fucking pitcher mound.

That's on Salty. Never should have come to that. Absolutely pointless throw to third. Wasn't going to get him anyway.
If he makes a good throw that Middlebrooks don't have to reach towards 2nd to grab, he gets him.

This is what the Sox should have done last night: kept Felix Dubront in the game. He was dominating them.

Catcher's interference. We talked about this.
SlickyTrickyDamon
10-28-2013, 02:56 AM
If it's Salty then it's going to be the Rube Baker syndrome for him again. He has had this problem in the past. He will throw a routine throw to the pitcher into the outfield for a loss.
Catcher's interference is a good bet. Maybe a balk.

I say this everytime the Yanks and Red Sox play. Red Sox plunk a lot of them, especially Jeter, and they never retaliate. Yankees refuse to pitch inside to Ortiz, just throw a couple close to him to back him up.

Either St Louis doesn't want to start a beaning war or somehow think Ortiz is less of a threat because the rest of the team strikes out way too much this offseason.
Detroit did the same in the ALCS and managed to neutralize him except for one game.

Don't understand Papi's free pass. 37 years old, slimmest in years, quicker bat speed, and his eyes are even yellow. Seems like a Bonds redux, but whatever.
