Cubs will not relinquish 4th place to the Astros. Maybe next year Houston. You suck again!

Oh wait. Houston's not in the NL Central anymore?

OH NO! WE SUCK AGAIN!

<font color=goldenrod>With Johan out, I did consider picking the Mets to finish last. But really - he was always going to be returning in like mid-May, early-June at the earliest. And if he pitched well he would have gotten traded probably. But really I think 4th is more likely. The Marlins are just terrible.

3rd place is the absolute ceiling for the Mets though, and that's dependent on the Phillies officially crumbling. That's not me being "lol pessimistic Vito Cruz", it's just me being a realist when comparing their roster to the other teams in their division. Of course I will root for them to win every game as I always do.</font>

<font color=goldenrod>Also poor Jordany Valdespin takes a nut shot from Verlander, has a great spring, and still doesn't crack the Opening Day lineup :( he's not good defensively though so playing him in the OF with the statue that is Lucas Duda would be a bit risky.

Though I am kinda glad Cowgill is the everyday CF. He had the best spring in camp and seems like somebody who will hustle.</font>

<font color=goldenrod>May as well toss my official predictions up in here as well, been working on them for the past week:

NL East

1. Washington Nationals
Span, Werth, Harper, Zimmerman, LaRoche, Desmond, Espinosa, Ramos. That has to be the deepest lineup in the NL and possibly in all of baseball. Couple that with a full season of Strasburg, Cy Young contender Gio Gonzalez, the NL return of Dan Haren, and Jordan Zimmermann…plus Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen in the bullpen setting up for Soriano who had 42 saves last year. God, this team is scary. I can’t see how they don’t get at least 95 wins – probably closer to 100, which should earn them the top seed in the NL. They take the NL East for the 2nd year in a row and are in a great position to begin a dynasty within the division.

2. Atlanta Braves (Wild Card 1)
Figures that longtime Mets menace Chipper Jones finally retired, so they simply acquired both B.J. and Justin Upton to fill the void. Those two are going to be a force to be reckoned with for the next few years. Couple them with a still-improving Heyward and McCann whenever he is back from injury, and that could be a solid lineup. Their real strength lies within their pitching staff, especially their bullpen. If they hold a lead after about 6 innings it’s basically game over. I hate the Braves but there really aren’t enough good things to say about Craig Kimbrel. Their formidable lineup and great pitching earns them the 1st NL Wild Card spot for the 2nd year in a row.

3. Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies are an aging ball club and it will likely show this year. While I do expect Utley and Howard to go back to having seasons they’re accustomed to, Rollins has been steadily declining and Carlos Ruiz’ great year last season seemed to be a bit fluky. Delmon Young is about 350 lbs and not particularly mobile, so Ben Revere will have to cover a lot of ground in center field. You can’t go wrong with Hamels and Lee in the rotation – but Halladay looks to be just about done. Mike Adams should be a great set-up man for Papelbon. All told I don’t think the Phillies will be terrible, but decidedly a 3rd place team in this division.

4. New York Mets
As per usual, I hope I’m dead wrong with this prediction and the Mets wind up being like the Oakland A’s of last year. But it’s just so hard to fathom. Murphy, Wright, and Davis form a solid 2-4 in the lineup, but beyond that there’s very little assurance. They’ll need somebody else to step up and be a surprise contributor, whether it be Jordany Valdespin, Collin Cowgill, or Lucas Duda. Rotation wise Johan is out and Shaun Marcum is a big injury risk. I do expect big things from Jon Niese though and hopefully Bobby Parnell will solidify the closer’s role. I eagerly await the big league debuts of both Zack Wheeler and Travis d’Arnaud, as they are obviously a huge part of the future.

5. Miami Marlins
As crappy as being a Mets fan may be sometimes, being a Marlins fan has to be far worse. This is now 3 times in the past 15 years that they have absolutely blown up their franchise and traded nearly everybody worthwhile. The only guy they have left worth anything is Giancarlo Stanton, and they’ll probably get a haul for him at the trade deadline. Their new park will probably be empty all year and I’d just be shocked if they didn’t finish last in the division.

NL Central

1. Cincinnati Reds
Top to bottom, the Reds have a very balanced team across the board. Votto, Phillips, and Bruce should continue to be very good. I really liked the Shin-Soo Choo pick up, and a full season of Todd Frazier should benefit them as well. Cueto and Latos are a great 1-2 punch in the rotation, and their bullpen has some depth as well. I do think it was a bit dumb to move Aroldis Chapman back to the closer’s role since he’d have crazy value as a starter. However, this is still a very good team and the best in the NL Central.

2. St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals have been a model of consistency for the better part of a decade and I think 2013 will be no exception. Their farm system is constantly churning out productive players to go along with the solid core they have right now. I’ll always despise Yadier Molina as a Mets fan, but he’s insanely good defensively and always calls a great game for their pitchers. I don’t see any reason why they won’t be in the Wild Card chase. If past years are anything to go by, they are a scary team in September and beyond.

3. Milwaukee Brewers
Ryan Braun will be candidate for NL MVP as per usual as long as he doesn’t get suspended for steroids. Aramis Ramirez is always dependable, and Norichika Aoki was a pleasant surprise last year. Gallardo is a great guy to plug into your rotation, and I think the recent acquisition of Kyle Lohse could pay big dividends. Lohse has been very underrated in recent years, so I’m glad he got a decent pay day. The Brewers have an outside chance at a Wild Card, but I feel they’ll come up short.

4. Pittsburgh Pirates
After 21 straight losing seasons, it’s very hard to forecast the Pirates breaking that mold until they actually prove they can do it. Andrew McCutchen is one of the best young players in baseball, but he’s surrounded by a lot of unproven guys in Starling Marte and Pedro Alvarez. Russell Martin should really help the pitching staff, which is good since it seems to be mediocre at best. Jason Grilli being a full-time closer still baffles me. It’ll be another year of seasoning for the Pirates’ young players.

5. Chicago Cubs
Sorry Cubs fans, your never-ending wait for a World Series will have to continue for another year. In truth, Epstein is still clearly rebuilding, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo are excellent building blocks and will be cornerstones of the franchise for years. That pitching just looks bad though, which will make for some nightmarish games when the wind is blowing out in Wrigley.

NL West

1. Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers’ massive financial investments could pay some serious dividends this year. Matt Kemp is obviously one of the best players in baseball, and I’m banking on a huge year from Adrian Gonzalez in his full season return to the NL. Carl Crawford is a speed demon in the leadoff spot. Not to mention Hanley Ramirez once he is off the DL. Kershaw is an absolute stud in the rotation, Greinke should still be good, their bullpen is filled with quality young arms, and the list goes on. There’s a lot to like about this Dodger ball club and I can see them putting up the second best record in the NL.

2. San Francisco Giants (Wild Card 2)
For a team that’s won the World Series 2 of the last 3 years, the Giants really do seem to be a bit overlooked. I love their rotation, and I’m thinking Lincecum could easily put together a good rebound year after his bad 2012 season. Sergio Romo shouldn’t have too much trouble adjusting to the closer role full-time. Lineup wise, I’m a believer in Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval. Throw in a full year of the solid Hunter Pence and I think they can put together enough wins to sneak out the #2 wild card spot.

3. San Diego Padres
As a whole I think the Padres have put together a very underrated team. Volquez was an All Star not too long ago, and I think Clayton Richard hasn’t gotten the credit he deserves. Their bullpen should be a strong asset in close games with Huston Street shutting the door. Chase Headley is great even if he did rob Wright of the Gold Glove Award last year. Everth Cabrera provides a ton of speed and I think Cameron Maybin is finally due to break out. I can see these guys being in serious playoff contention next year.

4. Arizona Diamondbacks
Trading away Justin Upton was simply idiotic. That move is just not justifiable unless you’re getting a haul in return. Martin Prado is a very solid and versatile player, but no way was he worth Upton. I’m thinking Goldschmidt has a big year in him, and they seem to have about a million productive options for the outfield. Their pitching seems pretty serviceable, if not unspectacular. Their team really doesn’t look too bad as a whole; in reality I only put them 4th because I’m a bigger believer in the Padres than most.

5. Colorado Rockies
I really like the look of their lineup. Tulowitzki and Gonzalez are both incredible players as long as they can stay healthy. Wilin Rosario was a big surprise last year and I think he can be a real weapon going forward. I’m kinda shocked that Todd Helton is still playing, but I’m glad he’s stayed with one team his whole career. Unfortunately for the team though, that pitching staff is just an eyesore. There’s really nobody on that staff that I would feel comfortable with at all, especially with the light air in Denver.

AL East

1. Tampa Bay Rays
This division is just ridiculous. I can honestly make a case for any of the 5 teams to win it, and I could easily see every team finishing over .500 on the year. But I’ll go with the Rays. Longoria is a tremendous cornerstone for the franchise, and I can see James Loney having some sort of career rejuvenation in the Trop. Desmond Jennings is also due to have the breakout year they’ve been waiting for. David Price is fantastic, and I think Jeremy Hellickson, Alex Cobb, and Matt Moore should be very dependable as well. I am a bit worried about Fernando Rodney crashing back down to Earth, but he was lights out in the World Baseball Classic so maybe he still has more in the tank.

2. New York Yankees (Wild Card 2)
It’s kind of funny to me to see Yankees fans pretty much acting like their team is at the level of the Mets. Yes, they already are down a few players with the Granderson, Teixeira, and A-Rod injuries plus Jeter coming off of his broken ankle. Yes, their roster is one of the oldest in baseball. But still, we’ve all danced this dance one too many times. Maybe it’s just superstition but when a team makes the playoffs in 17 out of the last 18 seasons, I’m inclined to think they’ll find a way back in again. I do think they have a solid pitching staff and once their bats are healthy and back in the lineup I think they’ll have plenty of runs in the tank.

3. Toronto Blue Jays
I give the Jays a ton of credit for the off-season they’ve put together. They absolutely pillaged the Marlins for two All Star caliber players (Reyes and Josh Johnson), a reliable innings eater in Buehrle, and the extremely fast and versatile Emilio Bonifacio. Bautista is obviously a beast, and Lawrie should take a big step up in production this year. Also, I will always be grateful for R.A. Dickey and I wish him nothing but success. Still, there are some big injury question marks in the rotation (namely Johnson and Morrow) so who knows. Maybe the huge amount of 2011 Marlins on the team has me spooked, but I see the Jays missing out on the playoffs.

4. Boston Red Sox
It’s really hard for me to imagine the Red Sox being as dreadful as they were last season. There is just too much talent on this team to suffer through that kind of campaign again. I’m expecting a solid bounceback year from Jon Lester, and I really think they could have a killer bullpen with Andrew Bailey and Joel Hanrahan finishing off games. Mike Napoli should prove to be a solid addition, and Victorino could wreak havoc on the basebaths with Jacoby Ellsbury. Pedroia and Ortiz should provide the consistent production they always have.

5. Baltimore Orioles
The Orioles shocked the hell out of a lot of people last year, and I can still see them finishing over .500 this year, but I think their ways of winning last year are unsustainable. They won pretty much every close game last year, their bullpen was lights out and Jim Johnson got 51 saves. Bullpens are so up-and-down year to year that I tend to think they’re in for worse luck this season. I do think Adam Jones is great though, and I’d go as far as saying he’s a darkhorse MVP candidate.

AL Central

1. Detroit Tigers
There’s no touching the Tigers in this division. Miguel Cabrera is simply the best hitter on the planet, and nobody can pitch around him with Prince Fielder looming on deck. Throw in Victor Martinez in the 5th spot and that’s a deadly middle of the order. Verlander is Verlander, and Scherzer and Fister are great complements for the 2 and 3 spots in the rotation. I am a little bit worried about the bullpen, namely rookie closer Bruce Rondon – but I can really see this team scoring enough runs to avoid there being too many close games.

2. Cleveland Indians
This was a shockingly active offseason for the Indians. Michael Bourn and Nick Swisher were both big acquisitions and they could actually make the Cleveland lineup a bit formidable to go along with Kipnis and Chisenhall. Vinnie Pestano and Chris Perez are a good 1-2 punch in the back end of the bullpen. The rotation is a bit spotty, but a return to form by Ubaldo Jimenez would provide a big boost. Overall I can see them being a surprise wild card contender.

3. Chicago White Sox
They’re not really good, but they’re not really bad either. They seem to be a middle-of-the-pack team. Konerko is their leader and can always be counted on for solid production, but after him and Alexei Ramirez there’s nobody I really have faith in. Adam Dunn’s batting average is comical. They did a good job in locking up Chris Sale and I think Addison Reed will be a big boost out of the bullpen. I’m thinking they finish with around 84-85 wins or so, which wouldn’t be enough for serious playoff contention this year.

4. Kansas City Royals
I still can’t for the life of me understand the James Shields trade. Wil Myers would have been great for them for years to come. Shields is a great pitcher, but this still seems like a team that will barely finish above .500 at the most. Billy Butler is solid, but I think Hosmer and Moustakas need more seasoning before they’re ready to contribute to a playoff team. I’ll be pulling for them since they’ve been so bad for so long, but I’m just not sure they’re ready for the next level yet.

5. Minnesota Twins
I think Ron Gardenhire is a great manager, but I wonder if finishing in last place again would be the end for him. Joe Mauer is good but massively overpaid. Willingham and Morneau can provide some solid power as long as they remain healthy. The pitching is a mess though. When you’re relying heavily on guys like Mike Pelfrey and Kevin Correia, you know you’re in trouble. I’d be very surprised if they didn’t come close to 100 losses.

AL West

1. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
Their lineup seems downright scary with Trout, Pujols, and Hamilton leading the charge. I also see the potential for a big year from Trumbo with all of those great hitters batting ahead of him in the lineup. Jered Weaver is a clear-cut ace and CJ Wilson is a solid #2 starter. I really like the look of their bullpen as well, Frieri was very good last year and Ryan Madson should provide some big time help once he comes off the disabled list. The Angels were labeled a disappointment last year for failing to make the playoffs, but this year I think everything will come together for them to win the division.

2. Texas Rangers (Wild Card 1)
Even without Josh Hamilton, I really like the look of their lineup. Adrian Beltre is outstanding and Kinsler is one of the better hitting second baseman in baseball. I liked the Berkman signing and think Texas is a great park for him to play in. Elvis Andrus provides nice speed and I see Profar receiving a call-up sooner rather than later to provide a spark. Pitching wise they seem pretty stacked with Darvish, Harrison, and Holland among others. Nathan was great last year and Joakim Soria is a great high-reward signing. He Rangers continue their string of playoff appearances.

3. Oakland Athletics
The A’s were just an amazing story last year. Nobody (myself included) had them going anywhere – much less winning their division. Cespedes was a great find and I think the offseason acquisitions of Chris Young and Jed Lowrie will really help to lengthen their lineup. I can’t help but feel that their pitching is due for a sophomore slump, though. Their starters are so young and it’s not unreasonable to expect some regression this year. But if everybody stays productive, I see no reason why Oakland can’t be right back in the playoff hunt this year.

4. Seattle Mariners
Locking up Felix Hernandez was a move that simply had to be done if they wanted to retain any credibility with their fans. In fairness, I do think they had a decent off-season in grabbing high-reward type of players like Ibanez and Bay. Kyle Seager was a hidden gem last year, and I’m looking for continued development from Smoak, Ackley, and Jesus Montero. Pitching is where they fall short, as after Felix and Blake Beavan there isn’t a whole lot there. There is too much talent in the AL West for them to compete for a playoff spot, but they’ll beat up on the Astros.

5. Houston Astros
Who is on this Astros team? Off the top of my head I can think of Bud Norris, Lucas Harrell, Carlos Pena, and Jose Altuve. That’s about it. I had to actually look up their roster. I feel terrible for Astros fans. They are obviously blowing up the team and starting from scratch, so they’re years away from competing as is. But the rebuild is coming at a time where they are switching to one of the better divisions in baseball. They’re basically a lock for the worst record in baseball could come close to matching the 1962 Mets’ 120 loss season.

It's the Astros' 1st game as an AL team. They're also playing their new AL West (and in-state) rivals, the Texas Rangers.

So I guess MLB wanted the spotlight to be just on that.

The over/under for the amount of full regular season games I watch on tv this year is:

2.5
That number can be increase to 5.5 if you want to include games I attend, I don't see myself going to more than three.

Been getting a flurry of emails from the Cubs about how "limited" seats are still available for their home opener. Last time they didn't sell out an opener was 1997.

Joe Maddon Working On Creating Cool New Infield Position

SPORTS NEWS IN BRIEF • Sports • Mlb Baseball • ISSUE 48•16 • Apr 17, 2012

ST. PETERSBURG, FL—Saying he finds the

defensive positioning that has been standard

in baseball for well over 100 years

"staid" and "primitive," Rays manager Joe

Maddon revealed Monday he is deep in the

process of creating an exciting new infield

position for his team. "It's going to be

called 'thwartstop,'" said Maddon, who has

been working on the position off and on since

abandoning efforts to reimagine the left fielder

role in the late 1990s. "I haven't worked out all

the kinks, but basically you use one less

outfielder, and the thwartstop plays in a different part of the infield for each batter, standing in

the exact spot spray charts show the batter is most likely to hit the ball." He later showed

reporters a special prototype thwartstop glove he has been sewing and divulged that he

offered Evan Longoria $500 to star in a instructional video series about the new position that

Maddon is self-producing.

The O's scored 7 runs combined: 2 off Price and 5 off McGee. Yes, they scored 7 runs, but, you know.

2 off Price. And McGee had a bad day. The way he put it you'd think Price gave up 5 and got the Loss, while McGee gave up 2 or something.

Price left after 6 innings with the lead but got a no-decision.

My only complaint from today's game was that Hammel looked good but was suddenly gassed after only like 60 pitches in the 6th whereas price threw about 100 in 6. Hammel had two near no hitters last year so I know he can go deep into games, I'm chalking it up to first start out of St.
