Not a huge Conrad Thomson fan, but he does an interview on Jr's feed with one of the guys from DSOTR regarding the Snuka episode and he brings up some really interesting behind the scenes stuff about Tonga Kid
Wait. What’s your problem with Conrad Thompson?
Supreme Olajuwon
04-22-2020, 02:13 PM
The first half of the episode is pretty skippable. The second half was better when they actually talked about the murder, but nowhere close to as good as the other murder episodes they’ve done.

Besides Season 3 likely being a lock, seems VICE is also considering a potential spin-off series for non-wrestling topics based on the positive reception Dark Side of the Ring series has been generating for the network.
Morgan Hertzan, EVP & General Manager of VICE TV told Deadline that the network is hoping to do more Dark Side of the Ring episodes and do more ‘Dark Side’ series in forms other than pro wrestling.
“We are eagerly looking forward to explore more ways to do more episodes of Dark Side of the Ring and Dark Side of other strands. We also are looking at all of our audience data and what people love about that show, and are using it to inform other shows that we’re green-lighting. The audience is telling us they love this kind of storytelling so we want to keep delivering on that over and over again.”

Really looking forward to Herb Abrams story. I can't really imagine why it's on "The Darkside" of the Ring... is there some scandal involved? I know a bit about the promotion taping in Vegas and doing a couple of "PPV's". Not my favorite super fed attempt but interesting none the less. My favorite attempt at a super fed is the little known about Jerry Jarret was involved in the the 90's I believe.

I listen to JR and Arn .... Stopped listening to Prichard's after it became the "kiss HHH ass in radio format" show. Oddly that started right around the time Prichard was rehired.

I'm with you, not a fan. Nothing really against him personally but I just don't see the need for a "setup man" on podcasts, or as he calls it, a "host".

Although Schultz has consistently maintained that World Wrestling Federation officials told him to hit Stossel (specifically, he insists that Vince McMahon himself said, "Blast him (Stossel), tear his ass up, stay in character -- 'Doctor D'..."), Schultz ultimately was fired. Many industry insiders believe that it was not because of his actions against Stossel, but rather because he challenged Mr. T to a fight backstage at a WWF show at Madison Square Garden.
I seem to remember a lot of guys talking about how Mr T was a dick, I know Piper and him didn't get along at all.

I'm 4 episodes in and here are my thoughts...
In reading about UWF I always thought the roster sounded bloated (literally) and underwhelming. But with Bruno and the very enegetic Herb Abrams on commentary, plus Captain's Corner every episode... this shit is really fun.
Steve Williams is great, Cactus is blooming, Patera is still pretty good, Orton is still good, Orndorff is still good ... Brain Blair is like a low rent Sting.. awesome. I enjoy the package they are selling. It's simple but it does remind me a lot of WWF Superstars in a good way too. Some of the promo's are really bad but it's like that 90's bad that is really entertaining.
LOL as I type this a masked character named "THE VIKING" just a promo and said "I don't have to tell you how bad I am". HAHAHAA.

Mando was supposed to come out to Rico Suave by Gerrado, but someone made a mistake and played Taco Grande by Weird Al Yankovic which was a parody of the song. Mando was clearly not amused lol

05-08-2020, 03:59 PM
Meltzer had a story in this week's Observer Newsletter from someone who worked for Herb Adams' UWF revealing how much of a mess the company was backstage.
Regarding last week’s Dark Side of the Ring and Herb Abrams, we got a nice anecdote from reader Jeff Cohen on that subject.
“I watched the DARK SIDE episode on Herb Abrams tonight. They seemed to portray him as a freewheeling cokehead but never mentioned that - as far as I know - he was married. I met his wife, a quiet Asian woman. She, Herb, and I rode in the limo back from the Babylon, NY house show that the UWF ran. At that event, she sold/ripped tickets while I sold t-shirts. The promotion was so disorganized that I found out I was selling shirts WHEN I GOT TO THE VENUE and helped carry the boxes into the lobby of the high school (assisted by David Sammartino). Simply put, they had assigned or hired NOBODY to do it. I borrowed a marker and used the back of some event fliers to put up signs saying "T-SHIRTS $12." At intermission, Herb's wife counted cash, then looked over and asked, "Who gave you $12 as the price?" I said "Nobody." She replied, "Oh, they're usually $13." I remember Herb frantically coming over and asking her for as much cash as she could give him - then asked me how much I'd sold. I handed him over $600. Whoever rented the gym was demanding cash, not a check. His rep had started to grow by then. The day before (Friday) there was supposed to be a house show in Jamaica, Queens at a converted movie house that now booked occasional gospel revival shows. I had scouted Queens locations for him (John Arezzi scouted Long Island) and showed up that night in a suit, nervous if this was my `big break’ into wrestling. The building was FREEZING as I arrived and met Arezzi. The ring was being assembled and the workmen were in winter coats (it was January). Arezzi and his WIFE arrived in a limo. He was not in a good mood b/c the concession stand was not set up and the heat was off. The event manager explained `I told you, Herb, I need cash not a check.’ Herb replied, `I gave you a check for $1,000!’ The manager said , `If you give me cash, I will turn on the heat.’ Furious, Herb said, `The show's off!’ He yelled at the ring workers, `Break it down, show's off!’ He went to the box (his wife was in the box office selling tickets) and told her to refund money. He went outside as the first limo pulled up and Ivan Koloff jumped out. Herb yelled, `Send the limo back to Manhattan! The show if off!’ Arezzi rolled his eyes and said, `See you tomorrow’ (at his wrestling convention at the LaGuardia Marriott). When I got there, Herb's wife was at the table selling pictures of wrestlers who were in the signing room. She recognized me and asked me to sell photos while she used the bathroom. She didn't come back lol. I wound up selling photos until the event ended. At that point, Herb asked me to attend the show in Babylon and stuck me in a limo with Steve Ray, B. Brian Blair and his wife, and Paul Orndorff. I was pretty intimidated but Steve had a bunch of questions about New York for me. I was also there at the end of the night when Herb was doing payoffs (by check). Herb told a funny story about how his wife wrote the check to Andre for the one UWF TV taping that he attended. She didn't know his real name and made it out to Andre the Giant, so his business manager had to handle cashing it at the bank.

Probably expired some time ago considering how open and willing she's been in recent times with anything Owen related compared to before.
Then again WWE supposedly violated the terms several times before so the NDA probably isn't worth its paper anymore.
It sounds like the breach of contract lawsuit is basically that WWE had two clauses in Owen's contract that lawsuits could only happen in CT and WWE could not be held responsible for injury or death so by starting a lawsuit of wrongful death in Missourri, Martha Hart was technically violating Owen's contract, twice.
Things got settled before this was ruled on, of course, but Vince IIRC did state he believes WWE would have won against Martha had things not settled.
Never heard this before -- you can hear Owen hit the ring around 1:26

Something about how he was interviewed for over 3 hours and didn't like how he was portrayed based on the stuff used. Made it seem like he was harsh towards the duo when that wasn't the case during the actual interview.
Also mentioned Hawk's brother messaging him before the interview about needing to be careful with what he says since the producers were not trustworthy when it came to their intentions for episodes.

Owen should have just said no.
The narrative has always been Owen was uncomfortable but didn't want to say no again since he just refused to do an affair angle with Debra, and he didn't want to say no again...
BUT, he wanted to leave when the Screwjob happened but WWE wouldn't let him out of his contract. So why was he worried about missing Vince/WWE off if he wasn't trying to keep his job there anyways?
Also, it's not like he would have been refusing an angle, just an entrance stunt. It's not the same thing.
Plus, he did the stunt prior to that day. Bet they won't bring that up on the upcoming episode.

Supposedly the real reasons was Vince threatened legal action against Owen if he quit and Bret warning him that WCW was a miserable place to work for and not worth the hassle.
Also unlike the others that left, Owen supposedly didn't feel he was that financially well off to risk legal issues or retire comfortably with his family.
The accident itself pretty much was due to Vince shrugging off Owen's concerns he had with the harness during the show.

That was a great episode. There was a hell of a lot of Martha and family in it which was a big get for the show, that adds some serious credibility.
I think the most important thing was that JR and Corny both reacted in a much more open and emotional way about Owen than I have ever heard them before. Every good wrestling podcast has an Owen episode and none besides Something To Wrestle ever took it to a place where tears were evident.
I'm not saying I liked them crying, it was just nice to see that they aren't as toughened to the subject as I had thought.

I'm not a criminal attorney so this isn't really my area of expertise, outside of the criminal application of general civil negligence principles applied to a business and/or its agents or employees.
First, unfortunately, money and PR almost undoubtedly had a large role in no one being charged criminally.
Second, it's difficult and rarely a slam dunk to prove recklessness or negligence, especially in a criminal case where the standard for conviction is the much higher, beyond a reasonable doubt.
Third, assuming that Vince was likely not directly responsible or involved in any of the actual engineering, planning, use, or selection of the equipment that failed or was inadequate, it would be increasingly difficult to prove that Vince himself essentially knew or should have known that use of the equipment involved would have likely caused the death of Owen.
Talbert would be a more likely candidate, but that would still be a tough ask. It's also possible that additional evidence the state may have felt it needed to prove negligence or recklessness did not become available or apparent until after the statute of limitations period of three years had passed.
There's also the idea that, for the WWE people involved, it was unforeseeable that the equipment manufacturer would be negligent in making or recommending the inadequate equipment, and the manufacturer's negligence was an intervening cause or act negating any culpability to anyone personally involved from WWE.

According to PWI, VICE recently ordered a third season for the series with a potential debut date of April 2021.
Also according to the series composer, Dark Side of the Ring was originally planned to be called "Falls Count Anywhere" and wasn't meant to be as dark in tone for episodes.
Composers Wade MacNeil and Andrew Gordon Macpherson are the ones behind the music in which episodes of Dark Side of the Ring are set to. There's been talk of the series expanding to other art forms such as music in the future.
The composer duo was asked about the possibility of a Dark Side of The Music when they joined The Wrestling Inc Daily podcast.
"Here's my take on it: ignore the title Dark Side of the Ring for a second. When we signed onto the show, it was supposed to be called Falls Count Anywhere," revealed Andrew. "The concept of the show was that wrestling is one of the only worlds where an artist has to live their gimmick. So, for 24/7 Rowdy Roddy Piper had to live Rowdy Roddy Piper. Heels and babyfaces couldn't sit in the same dressing room and that dedication to the show started to affect reality. Then reality started to affect the show of wrestling. The original concept was supposed to be the world of kayfabe and how it affects reality and how reality affects it. It wasn't supposed to be World's Deadliest Wrestling Shoots or anything like that."

Also, there was never distinct evidence to determine how exactly it happened. The harness didn't break, it just disconnected. There is no way to prove that it failed independently of Owen Hart. Hence the long standing speculation that Owen accidentally triggered the quick release himself.
It's why they had a civil case instead of a criminal case. Had the clamp broke or the cable snapped, it would still be very hard to prove criminal charges, but their would be an argument to bring charges. Without that, they did what they could and held Vince financially responsible.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (Nov. 5, 2017) — INFLUX Pictures has started filming for its upcoming documentary “The Rings of Saturn,” which examines the post-wrestling life of Perry Satullo, who, under the ring name Perry Saturn, fought for Extreme Championship Wrestling, World Championship Wrestling and the World Wrestling Federation.
The film, planned for a July 2018 release, will feature interviews with Saturn and other former and current professional wrestlers and promoters, actor re-enactments and animated sequences.

Probably can blame WWE more for that since they really pissed off UPN by refusing their request to edit out his segment from that week's show because they felt it was in very poor taste considering what had happened in London earlier.
WWE gave some excuses for why they didn't but all that ended up doing was pissing off UPN even more when it actually aired on tv. Think either UPN threatened to pull their tv contract or some other serious punishment if WWE continued with the Hassan storyline for Smackdown.

Anyone watch Darkside of the Ring: Confidential? The first episode revisited and got deeper into the Gino Hernandez story. I enjoyed it even more than the original airing. They dropped that Gino's Grandfather married Jimmy Snuka's Mom in a kind of wild story. Also we learned that Gino was indeed not the son of Paul Bosch. Looking forward to the next one.
