I just wish the episodes were at least an hour and a half long. An short feels too short for some of these stories.

According to the Observer Newsletter, Season 3 is going to be split up into two halves with the first half airing starting in May and the second half latter in the year.
Dark Side of the Ring, the most-watched television show in the history of VICE, returns for season three, which I believe will be broken up into two parts. The first part starts with a two-hour show on 5/6, which means a Thursday night time slot, I guess to avoid NXT on Tuesday. The big episode of the season is the first one on Brian Pillman. After that will be Nick Gage, Collision in Korea, Ultimate Warrior (notable because A&E is doing Ultimate Warrior as well), Grizzly Smith and the Smith family (Jake Roberts, Rockin Robin Smith and Sam Houston) and Dynamite Kid. Of these episodes, I was interviewed for Pillman and Dynamite. It’s been confirmed to us that the second half of season three would then take place later in the year for six or seven weeks

The one show I make a point to watch.
I can't wait to hear some Johnny K-9 stories. He's a legend amongst the indie guys in my city.
Yeah I think Bruiser Bedlam is going to be the show of the season.
It blows my mind that he is so unknown given the crazy gangster shit he was getting up to.
John Nord would make a good subject for this too.
Quite the character!

Brian Pillman getting a whole episode seems silly... The guy doesn't provide much in the way of interest.
Dynamite Kid will be a rehash of everything we already know, probably worth watching for anyone who hasn't read about him.
I mean his own book paints him as a massive cunt so just read that really.

Brian Pillman would be a piece of shit if a quarter of what was said was true, let alone all of it.

I watched the Herb Abrams episode recently. It was fine. Not quite as chaotic as I was expecting. Was cool to have Stevie Ray and Col. Red on there but it was a little soft.
And they didn’t even talk about the Dr. Death hit on Stevie Ray. Which I guess confirms it was a bit.

Like what good could possibly come from her being on this show for her sake.
Melanie Pillman seems like real scumbag. Feel like she only went on there and admitted guilt to save face, because she knew how bad her part in the story would come off.
Believe me, Melanie did not have to admit guilt in the custody issue, there is more to the story. In the way she dealt with Rochelle and said and did bad things, absolutely, but the notion of going for custody...was a very complex issue for her to admit guilt to, because it probably was the right move at that specific time.
Melanie doesn't fare any better in Part 2, either.

Great episode . I’m obviously a huge Pillman fan and already knew most of the stuff that was discussed , but it was really cool to see people like Kim Wood, his sister, Melanie and the two daughters on the show. Melanie looks awful but I guess that’s what years and years of drug abuse does to you .

Last year's #SpeakingOut movement is something the series producers are currently interested in doing for a future episode.
Dark Side of the Ring co-creators Evan Husney and Jason Eisener talked to VICE about season three of their series. Evan shared that they do have interest in covering the #SpeakingOut movement that began in the Summer of 2020 where many women shared their stories of sexual and/or emotional abuse in wrestling.
Husney: "We were definitely paying attention when that was happening, and it’s definitely something we’re interested in covering. In fact, there’s one story that I was quite passionate about that exemplified aspects of that movement, but the access to that story wasn’t there yet. It might be something we could possibly do down the line, but there are a lot of stories that we do pursue that don’t work out for access reasons. You don’t want to make a talking head piece that’s impersonal. For us, it just wasn’t the right time."

I learned a lot in the Pillman episode. I've never read his biography so I really didn't know the extent of the crash and what caused it. It's nice to learn new things about old stories. This episode was really emotional, Pillman Jr's footage really got me. Poor family really had it bad after he passed. From this I hope that AEW really decided to give the kid a chance, I think he has the talent for success. After last weeks Dynamite I'm hoping that they build The Suicide Blondes to a PPV match with Lucha Express.
The JR footage as well was really personal and emotional. Hearing from Austin was good too, he removed himself quite a bit but that didn't surprise me he's not a very emotional guy.
Really glad they got Melanie, she obviously doesn't come off as any kind of hero but it was necessary for the story.

Just finished watching the Pillman episode and it was easily one of the best in the series.
Helped that it was a two parter but had enough content where it flowed well and didn't feel like they were just trying to stretch things out to fill for time like some of the other episodes in the series.
Pillman Jr. breaking down over how his life spiraled downwards after his father's passing was a bit tough to watch. To go from someone who loved you very dearly to someone who was a piece of shit as a father figure was something he never deserved to experience.

Stretch out for time? I actually think every episode should be at least an hour and a half. Most feel rushed IMO.

Some of the weaker 1-hour episodes felt like they were stretching out content or a topic to fill the whole episode.
Think the Montreal Screwjob episode that had that feeling when it devolved into a Cornette vs. Russo bickering fest in the latter half.

I think they put that in because as much as people like you and I are tired of it, people eat that shit up. I have a couple friends who were more or less Attitude Era fans who thought the Cornette v Russo shit was hilarious. I told them this shit has been going on for 20 years lol
The Randy Savage episode for example I think could have used more time. They really glossed over his WCW run.
I also have to keep in mind that they are trying to tow the line between appealing to casuals and wrestling dorks like myself.

The Warrior one is going to be really interesting since its airing on the same week as A&E's Biography episode on him.
Outside of the Macho Man episode, A&E's WWE based episodes have shied away a lot or flat out ignored any notable controversial stuff that would make WWE look bad.

Honestly I will watch whatever they come up with for further seasons. But I feel like if I can't come up with stories that I would want to see for a 1 hour doc called Dark Side of The Ring, beyond what they've already produced and have for this season. Then I think they will have some real trouble grabbing the big ratings they are accustom to. I highly doubt they will get the ratings for this season that they did in the last two.

I have only seen Nick live once. It was at Lost in New York. I can't recall seeing fans respond to anyone the way that they did for him that night. He brings out a sense of insanity, blood lust, violence that I've never experienced before. It was awesome. I'd been thinking "Will AEW bring in Nick for a program or some kind of death match with Mox or Kingston"... while I wish they would I don't see it happening. I don't think Tony could swing it with his criminal record. But I really wish the best for him, whatever that is to him.

Seeing as he recently started a feud for the GCW title with Jon Moxley, I wouldn't be surprised if he showed up in AEW at some point this year and AEW's been open towards deathmatch style wrestling for their shows.
AEW did have plans for him to show up at last year's All Out event but that got canned after he suffered a serious injury prior to it. Wasn't till last month that he finally recovered enough to resume wrestling.

If it doesn't interest you I get it. For me it's an important story because CZW was the evolution of ECW. CZW was doing it's thing near the end of ECW, it had it's fan base which I was not apart of. It seemed like backyard wrestling mixed with steroids to me. It was way to brutal but at the same time worked for me to enjoy. But it does have a following. It started with the love for Japanese death matches which I used to have a peaking interest in. But I learned that this type of Wrestling really has very little to offer.
All that said. Nick as the main guy for GCW these days is quite relevant. They are probably the funnest live show in the US right now. It's taken the spot of PWG, ROH, and what ECW used to be as the "underground" company that is providing the inspiration for a lot going on in the mainstream.
For me this was one of the most captivating episodes yet. Cage is a live wire, he's a flash from the past, something you don't see these days in wrestling. The Arquette story was the crescendo that tied it all together. Complete insanity.

I hated Cactus Vs Funk when I saw it recently too after I watched that Nick Mondo documentary and that Vice death match documentary with the really fat guy who gets some sort of spikey metal scouring pad that looks like it attaches to a drill hammered into his head.
I even watched a load of that idiot Necro Butcher's matches.
It always ends in light tubes gouging huge chunks out of people.

Got around to watching the Collision in Korea episode and it was all right. Would put it more in the mid to low tier for episodes in series history.
Laughed at how everyone was saying how bad of a time they had in North Korea and Muhammad Ali just abruptly decides to jog up a flight of stairs and shadow box while visiting a sacred site and nothing bad happened to him.
2 Cold Scorpio and Hawk having legit brawls in North Korea was the best part about the episode, especially Scorpio's chopstick story.

Only regret about the episode is they really should have gotten Ric Flair for it.
It would have been great hearing his tales about his time in North Korea considering he's a very eccentric wrestler and personality while North Korea looks down on that type of stuff and is very rigid for daily life.

They nailed it with Warrior. I loved it. Can't wait for the extended version and the podcast review with Conrad. They told the truth (so far as I've heard it before) and yes buried him (he buried himself) and then at the end the sentiment really got to me. When Warrior died it was shocking and prophetic in a way. As big of a dick as he was, I still really cared for him especially when he seemed to change before he died. I ended up getting into weight lifting from his last promo and gained like 30lbs of muscle. I would pump his music at the gym and channel that Warrior spirit.

The A&E doc wasn't harsh it was definitely the opposite of The Self Destruction DVD. Still worth watching though. I enjoyed both. Darkside is much more what I understand is the truth of people's experiences in working with Warrior.
Talking about Jake, clearly that's the truth he knows but it doesn't make a lot of sense. We're talking 91' right? Warrior holds up SummerSlam, Hogan is the champ, it doesn't make sense that the Jake/Warrior program would be for the title. I think that Jake is probably confused and was high.

Yeah Jake is confused, none of that matches up.
Warrior was champ in 1990, and Jake was still a face in 1990. He wrestled Bad News Allen at Summerslam 1990.
Jake turned heel right before Summerslam by aligning with Undertaker, so they were slated to work together, but it wasn't going to be for the title. Jake probably just acting like he was gonna be champ to make himself seem more important.
A&E doc was my much better, and documented the controversies much better in my opinion.
Also, Jim Ross has the be the most bitter asshole in all of wrestling. He also is full of shit, seeing as how JR and Warrior were only in the WWE for like 4 months.

In The Shadow of Grizzly Smith was really good. As good as a story like that can be. It's fucked up. Jake is such a tortured soul, yet we are so lucky to have had him in wrestling and now still alive and sober to tell his stories. Nobody like Jake. Sam Houston came off like a really good guy and Rockin Robin was a great storyteller too. The older brother Richard (I think) also carried a lot of pain with him from this story. How could they not, it's their lives, so fucked up. Crazy that Grizzly had such a high position in WCW with all this circling in his background. Glad they used that footage of Grizzly and Jake from Beyond The Mat, that always stuck with me.
This season of Darkside has probably been my favorite so far. Next week, Tom Billington. Man I hope they get renewed for a season 4. I don't know what stories they can tell at this point but I'm sure they are out there. Chris Adams, Chyna, Luger/Liz, Eddie Guerrero, WWE/Saudi Arabia, WWF Ring boy scandal, Scott Hall, Hogan... I mean there are a ton more stories out there. They may not be as focused as Grizzly, Korea, or have ended like Pillman, but there are plenty more to tell.

Just finished the Dynamite one. Great episode.
I had no idea Bret's ex wife and Dynamite's ex were sisters
Also, Jacques Rougeau is a treasure.
Right ? I never knew that either ! Crazy that I never heard this
And then I was pissed they didn’t bring him in during 97 to side with the Harts since he was technically a brother in law

Meltzer is right. Dynamite Kid doesn't get enough credit and because his career ended so long ago he's becoming one of these guys lost to time.
Dynamite Kid is one of those guys who would do something almost every match that would leave you in awe.
The crowd reaction to Tiger Mask vs Kid at MSG 1982 is so great. They initially don't know what to make of it, but come out of their seats at the end. It's the greatest example of that.

Just rewatched Grizzly Smith episode and I noticed one thing, in beyond the mat Jake said that Grizzly was is father AND grandfather and that he was the product of incest but nothing of this was talked about in DSOTR, was it all bullshit or they just didn't want to go there ???

I think he was over simplifying that. In the sense that Grizzly was with his grandmother, although I dont think he was ever married to her, and raped what would have been his step daughter had he been married to the grandmother. The one he raped is who then became his wife.

Oh damn, I didn't understood it this way, thanks for the clarification !

You were right about Arn's podcast. Amazing stuff for territory fans. Also I'm loving Jarrett's deep dive on the creation of TNA. Also been enjoying Jr's podcast too, he's got a lot to say about almost everything he has been apart of.

I wonder how deep they will go seeing as this was taped while Flair was still employed by WWE. I cant see them passing up burying WWE when they have the chance.

There shouldn't be any shortage of guys willing to talk. Jim Ross, Sean Waltman, Justin Credible, Dustin Rhodes have all spoken at length about this. I don't imagine this will be a groundbreaking episode. Kind of a light episode like Brawl 4 All. Kurt Angle would be a very cool get.

oof tommy dreamer
The decision to focus on Heidi Doyle was brilliant - I'd never really thought about the plane ride from hell from the p.o.v. of the crew before - but it really is her story, she's the protagonist of it all.

Tommy Dreamer is absolutely full of shit about Flair. I in no way believe that Flair wouldn’t force himself on a woman. No shot. If Dreamer was gonna lie, he should’ve just said he never knew Flair to be the type. Or not comment on it at all.

Yeah... feels hard to imagine them signing him and putting him on TV, at least not imminently...
They seem to react strongly to any backlash about this type of stuff and they would def get a lot of backlash if Flair is signed any time soon...

Tommy Dreamer a couple years ago admitted that he wanted to burst into WM17, shoot Paul Heyman and then do his pose and shoot himself in the head. And that murder-suicide would be a great “angle” for him to end on.
Suppose it’s not a surprise he’s a complete moron.

I think a side angle on the episode is the light it shines on the drug/pill use at the time. It seems like Vince just washed his hands of it. I know that we always knew that, but it’s a physical representation of that now. Just letting the “boys” go absolutely crazy. He could have stopped the drinks coming, he could have had them return to the terminal if it’s a private plane. He could have gone back there, but he didn’t.
Instead of getting Hennig the help he obviously needed, he is fired and dies not long after. Instead of trying to help Hall, they fire him and it’s just by the grace of God that he is still here.
Obviously addiction is something personal and it can be very difficult to help people, but there guys are abusing drunk and drugs and mixing potentially lethal cocktails meters away from where you are sitting. There had to be some sense of responsibility by the company when it’s being done on their time.

I took the ponytail joke as a jab at cancel culture. I could be wrong but his tone came off to me more sarcastic and annoyed then trying to sound funny.
I wonder if they'll ever do an Ashley Massarro episode. Her affidavit about being drugged so she was paralyzed but conscious while being repeatedly raped/sodomized is pretty disturbing stuff.
Vince then telling her she basically needed to 'stand up for wwe' and not sell that it happened.

From Fightful:
IMPACT staff is told Tommy Dreamer not at IMPACT tapings
Fightful has learned that at a production meeting today, staff was informed that Tommy Dreamer would not be at this weekend's Nashville tapings. Dreamer appeared on last night's Dark Side of The Ring, where he recounted the events of the Plane Ride From Hell, brushing off Ric Flair's behavior during the event, and saying it was simply a "joke," among other things. We were not told of his role going forward and how it is affected.
