There's some new punk track pack out. Don't think I'll get them.

I snagged Rockaway Beach and I Fought the Law. It's not the BFF version, but closest I'll get. Also bought the Sabbath pack last night. I have a shitload of content, and I still want more...MOOOOOOORE.

Why not just learn to play the instruments for real? I don't understand this game.

1) I am practicing on my learner's electric guitar.
2) You're missing the point of this video game.

Would you ask a Madden gamer why he isn't trying out for the local football team? A GRAW gamer why he isn't enlisted in the army?

Guitar Hero/Rock Band are music games based on hitting notes accurately for both fun and building high scores to brag about. It's not about mistaking your skills at those games with legit musical skills, its about having fun at a videogame. Real soldiers in Iraq have Rainbow Six Vegas sessions, martial artist enjoy fighting games, and real musicians have played Guitar Hero; so actually living the craft isn't an end point that the games themselves start you off.

Now there are cases where genre games have increased interest in their respective gimmick. I'm sure Guitar Hero and Socom influenced some to start musical and military ambitions. But I imagine that effect is marginal.

What I'm trying to say is...

Don't knock it 'till you try it.

Why not just learn to play the instruments for real? I don't understand this game.

I play guitar, bass, and sing.

Game's still fun as Hell.

But I've never gotten the whole "Learn to play the real thing" argument. I mean, a lot of the people who play these games also play some sort of instrument, so it's not even like they're mutually exclusive, or the idea is new.

Not to mention, the game's easier to pick up and play than a real instrument.

Evil Vito
12-13-2007, 09:24 AM
The "Learn to play the real thing" argument is a cop-out used when people suck ass at the game.

As for me, I own an electric guitar and am slowly but surely learning to play it, still have fun playing GH.

I want Rock Band so badly :( Shame there won't be more available until January :(

The "Learn to play the real thing" argument is a cop-out used when people suck ass at the game.

Most of the people who say it seem to have not played it at all.

Though I wonder if they've ever tried playing a real instrument if they have. I play at least a half a dozen instruments to varying degrees, and I have all three Guitar Heroes and Rock Band.

Love it. Totally. Not great at it (I top off somewhere in expert in the first two, and
hard on GH3), but still, I don't need to be the best to have fun.

You might have a faulty one.

Mine works great, and I can't stand going back to the old one to play GH.

Also, new DLC up.

2 sngs by the american rejects
2 songs by 30 seconds to mars
1 song by the sounds

All only 80 ms points a piece.

The Kill by 30 seconds to mars is reccomended, but the rest you can probably do without, unless you like the bands.

Kalyx triaD

Playing drums on expert is very satisfying. Some songs are pretty wild, though. Look up the Transformers Movie Theme by Lion and replicate the drum pattern with your hand as a snare, keys for hats, and your hand again as a fist for the kick drum. That's how I practiced using my foot on the drums way back when. Sounds crazy til you try it.

I think I'm gonna find myself buying several songs that I probably wouldn't listen to, but enjoy within the context of the game.

I know the AAR songs, but don't the 30STM ones, so I was hesistant to DL them. I try and stick to songs I know, since I know I'll enjoy them. And Move Along seemed like it'd be fun and worth the "risk."

Black was never confirmed. Whoever told you that didn't know what they wrer talking about.

And they never said there would be a full metallica almbum. Just that they had the rights to do 15 songs.

So far we've got 4, plus the upcoming single from their new album which makes 5.

The fifteen tracks was confirmed after the four tracks, and the wording makes me think the new single isn't a part of it. Just saying.

Nothing actually confirmed on the Black album, though. Though TBH, if they released that, it'd pretty much be all the Met I need.

Exclusive Rock Band DLC in February OXM
Three new tracks bundled on DVD with magazine.
By Andrew Hayward, 01/03/2008

The staff of the Official Xbox Magazine has announced that its February 2008 issue, available in stores on January 15th, will include a trio of exclusive playable tracks for the Xbox 360 version of Rock Band on its pack-in DVD. The disc will contain the following songs:

Bang Camaro - "Rock Rebellion"
Count Zero - "Shake"
Freezepop - "Sprode"

All three bands have made appearances in previous Harmonix-developed titles, with other tracks from Bang Camaro and Freezepop already included on the Rock Band retail disc. OXM Editor-in-Chief Francesca Reyes told Joystiq this morning that the tracks can be downloaded onto the hard drive for use with Rock Band, thus eliminating the need to use the disc after the data transfer.

No word yet on availability of the exclusive tracks for PlayStation 3 owners.

-Great, I have to snag an overpriced mag I won't even read for new tracks. Nice one, Mike Soft.

Got the OXM song pack (feelin dirty inside). Sprode doesn't fit well, on any kind of play. Rock Rebellion is sweet. The third track sucks song and gameplay wise.

Oddly enough, the mag had an article that walked you thru fixing busted RB equipment. Now, in-print they admitted they knew little about what they were doing, even labeling a drum kit piece 'thingy' or something. But I was inspired to toss my warranty out the window and perform some surgery on my guitar's non-downstrumming issue. A pair of scissors and some patience and boom - I got it working.

Thanks OXM, I'll never buy you without sleazy promotions attached but you got me drivin solos again. My broken foot pedal is another issue.

Was about to say, oxm is the only other magazine I buy outside of egm. They have some good editorials in there a lot of the time, and their reveiws aren't as biased as the playstation mags are. Yeah so I hate this game. :( I was fucking around on the drums, using the unlock all songs cheat to try out some songs that I haven't been able to unlock yet because I'm awful...then I decided to go into my expert solo tour where I've never been able to beat In Bloom because the chorus kills me...

...and I FINALLY beat it, somehow, someway...then it hit me that I couldn't save it because I had unlocked all the songs :| So I turned off the XBox, restarted, tried In Bloom again and sure enough....failed.

I like that you can't save high scores and shit, but not being able to save ANYTHING, not even progress in a solo tour, is mighty gay.

Crushcrushcruch is fun to play... Oddly enough, I passed on Beethoven's Cunt and picked up Shockwave, after hearing how good it was... The guitar on it is pretty fun for the most part, although the solo killed me.

I picked up some back songs today too. The Counting Crowes song they had, Last Train to Clarksville, Action, and Heroes. I still need to pick up the STP songs, the Rush songs, along with Blackened and Ride the Lightning ( I was cheap at the time and only bought And Justice for All.)

This game is going to drain my money...

Also, I realized, they really need to release Appetite for Destruction as a full cd... There are so many good songs on that cd. Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child O' Mine, Paradise City, Mr. Brownstone, Rocket Queen, It's So Easy... Such a good disc.

But I should make another suggestion for a band we MUST see on the DLC circuit for RB (which may make me MORE unpopular, but I don't give a fuck about that): Motely Crue.

C'mon, all those hits they had and they totally IGNORE them so far? They could make TWO 6-pack packs with as many hits as they had, and they are all very recognizable hits that alot of people will know. Home Sweet Home, Dr Feelgood, Kickstart My Heart, Smokin' In The Boys Room?

C'mon, Harmonix. All those games and the Crue wasn't even on the shortlist? Surely you must know they exist SOMEWHERE!

Licensing has always been a huge issue. There's no "suddenly" here, and nobody called you a retard.

In reality, do you honestly think that the games would be exactly as they are now if the designers had completely free reign? We'd see Zepplin and Floyd and the Beatles (Rock Band, if not GH) and probably a bunch of others. Those are just the easiest examples. Some artists are easier to work with in terms of licensing than others. Then there's the issues of masters or rerecording with a studio band. Some artists want too much, even when they don't lend their original masters, which makes it not worth it for them.

Others are easier to work with. For example, you could sum up most people's interest in Sting in three songs, yet they keep putting him up on Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Think it's because he's synonymous with guitar legends? Yeah, they chose Syncronicty II over Stairway, and licensing has JUST become a problem.

You made a good point, though.

But if they could get Metallica (which was all about that whole Napster bullshit), then they could get the Crue (which was against Metallica's stance all throughout).

I guess I'm saying that it shouldn't be too hard to get the band that is more liberal about that sort of thing if you can get the more conservative band. In other words, it's just an excuse to me.

Well, except it doesn't always work that way. Just because Metallica was against Napster doesn't mean they haven't issued online content and other items. IT's not like Metallica's upping MP3s or anything.

Honestly, though, it's not as uncommon as it seems to be. The Wii VC updates every Monday, the Marketplace every Tuesday (I guess), then the PSN store on Thurs. Each system has the day to update.

Except, as I just said, Marketplace updates several times a week. Last week/this week, it updated once on the weekend (Saturday OR Sunday, I'm not sure which) as well as Monday.

Now, Rock Band itself only updates on Tuesday, but that's a game specific fashion, not XBLM completely.

It also seems kind of dumb, since PSN and XBLM are primary competition, that PSN would only update once a week, giving an advantage to the competition in essence. Not that I care, since aside from Rock Band, I don't usually buy DLC, and the other shit they have on XBLM and PSN can go fuck themselves. Except maybe originals and the equivalent for PSN. Anyway, it doesn't matter too much to me, but still, you'd think Sony'd want to beat out the comp.

March 31, 2008 - "Still Alive," the Jonathan Coulton song that plays over the credits of Valve's Portal, will be available as a free Rock Band download in April, Harmonix, MTV Games and Valve announced today.

The song will be available for the Xbox 360 on April 1 and for the PlayStation 3 on April 17. Harmonix VP of product development Greg LoPiccolo said the free "Still Alive" download is a "thank you" to Rock Band fans for their support of the music game.

Including GLADoS' anthem, Rock Band boasts more than 70 downloadable tracks, in addition to the 58 included on the disk.

I think they are doing this because the PSN Store isn't being updated for a few weeks while Sony works on it (read: The huge redesign that they are making), and they don't want to release anything that is too awesome that both systems can't have on that same week. Once the PSN Store is relaunched, they'll probably go back to releasing awesome stuff again (like the first FULL ALBUM DLC, hopefully).

Where do you get those drums?

Requiem

It is a mod he did. I have noticed that a lot of the good drummers that post videos on youtube seem to use modded drum kits to alter the bass kick, and how the pad hits so that neither of them double hit on accident. And so they are smoother or more realistic.

Cause really, the bass pedal on the stock drum set is pretty uncomfortable and somewhat difficult to use right.

Not only do we have word on the next big pack now, but we also now know that we will see the new PS Store unveiled by the 17th.

That actually confirmed more than what they think it did, though I bet we already knew that the Store would've been done remodeling by then

Wow the UK are getting screwed with this:

EU Rock Band Priced and Dated
Good news for rich 360 owners, not so great if you're poor or have a PS3.
by Alex Simmons, IGN UK

UK, April 8, 2008 - Electronic Arts has at long last settled on an official European release date for Rock Band. However, don't get too excited unless you're an Xbox 360 owner – the May 23 launch on Microsoft's console will doubtless please 360 owners, but those hoping to jam on PlayStation 3, PS2 and Wii will have to wait until later in the summer. Initially it will only be available in the UK, France and Germany too, with other European territories to follow.

Perhaps more disappointing is the price: unlike the US, which received a Special Edition that includes the game, a Fender Strat guitar, the drum kit and a mic, all for $169 – Europe will only get an Instrument Edition priced £129.99 / 169 Euros, including the three peripherals but not the game – which, bought separately, will set you back £49.99 / 69.99 Euros. So, if you want the proper Rock Band experience, the minimum you're going to have to shell out is around £180 / 240 Euros.

Quite why EA has decided to release the Instrument Pack without the game is anyone's guess, although it's likely retailers will bundle the two together, if not at launch then hopefully shortly after. In addition, wireless guitars will be available separately for the princely sum of £59.99 / 79.99 Euros, with standalone drum kits setting you back £69.99 / 89.99 Euros.

There is some good news though. In addition to the 58 songs featured in the US game, Europe will get eight news tracks from English, French and German bands, all bundled on the disc:

- Beetlebum (Blur)
- Rock 'n' Roll Star (Oasis)
- Hysteria (Muse)
- Manu Chao (Les Wamaps)
- New Wave (Playmo)
- Hier Kommt Alex (Die Toten Hosen)
- Perfekte Welle (Juli)
- Countdown to Insanity (H-Block X)

What's more, the 70-plus downloadable tracks already available in US will be waiting for European rockers come May 27, priced 160 MS points each. Plus, US players can get their mitts on the eight European tracks around the same time. Quick recap then: if you want to the ultimate Rock Band experience, with two guitars and every song at your fingertips, be sure to put aside £330 / 430 Euros. On a positive note, going forward, Europe will have access to new downloadable songs at the same time as the US.

So what do you think of the price? And PS3 owners, are you peeved enough to go out and buy a 360 because you can't wait any longer? Let us know in the comments below.

No, I mean, seriously, I'd have more sympathy for European gamers if their economy wasn't so goddamn strong compared to ours. Boo Hoo, I have to pay 300 bucks for a game (give or take), even though I can get a job that pays actual money, have standards of living, and don't have to pay ten bucks for bread.

My heart bleeds.

Cannot wait for those "exclusive" songs to hit as DLC.

Honestly, I'd pay for another oasis pack. The first is mad fun.

I read somewhere earlier today that it's more likely going to be £150-£180 but it wasn't definite and people still seem pissed at the price.

Tell me about it.

On the downside, DMac will call for Metallica every week until every Met song ever has been released.
