Holy craps!
This weekend, Harmonix, MTV and EA announced the development of Rock Band, a music game ala Guitar Hero that allows up to four players to jam out on four different instrument controllers. The controllers: two guitars (lead and bass), a drum kit and a microphone. The Jamming: in-the-room or online!
But that's not, as they say, all. Rock Band will feature original artists playing their original hits as opposed to the fake versions from previous guitar and karaoke games.
"Rock Band takes the core premise of Guitar Hero and expands it tenfold," says Alex Rigopulos, co-founder of Harmonix, which developed the game and the Karaoke Revolution games. "It lets you create a complete collaborative band."
"Our vision for Rock Band is to completely change the way people interact with and enjoy the music they love,” said Jeff Yapp, EVP, MTV Program Enterprises. By joining forces with EA and the music industry's largest record labels and publishers, we are striving to create a groundbreaking new platform that allows people to connect with their favorite music and artists in ways they never have before.”
The game will be available before Christmas (most likely) and is for the 360 and PlayStation 3. No tracklists have been released and no screenshots produced, but you can bet we'll give 'em up when we get 'em!
TheFeed needs a shower now.

I was actually trying to predict how much it would cost...
Would be great if the Guitar Hero controllers could be used as the guitar ones for this game...then I would only need to pick up the mic and drum...
But if its all the instruments together then im predicting over 200

Yeah, I'd be willing to pay 200 for this game though. It would be a blast.

No current controllers on the new game.
One thing is certain, if you are about to buy Guitar Hero II on Xbox 360, the Red Octane instrument will not work with Rock Band. The peripherals for Rock Band are being created by Harmonix and will not be identical to the guitar recently released by Activision for 360.

If they're not working with Red Octane this time, it's a logical conclusion that the controllers won't work.

Yes, we're very excited by the prospect of Rock Band, the music game that allows up to four players to rock out on fake instruments, but only because TheFeed are oil barons who routinely light our cigarillos with $100 bills; This game will not be cheap.
According to gaming blog Kotaku, GameStop is taking preorders for the peripherals for the game, and if the listings are correct, putting together a full band with wireless equipment costs more than $300.
Broken down:
The microphone sells for $39.99
Standard guitar for $59.99
Wireless guitar $79.99
drums going for $79.99
Rock Band game for $59.99
These prices aren't set, but rest assured, it will won't be cheap.
TheFeed's Frank Meyer recommends spending that money on an actual guitar, and actually rocking out. He points out that you can get a perfectly serviceable Epiphone Les Paul knock-off for about that price
---------------------------------------------------------------
Well there it is....prices for the paripherals

Hopefully lag doesn't kill this.

I'm assuming (hoping) that you'll be able to go through single player mode with one instrument at a time. Cuz there's no way I'm buying all those peripherals at once.

Singing is now more in depth. There is a phoneme detector that will pick up individual vowels and consonants you say. Build up enough highly judged phrases and you'll be able to sing free-form. If you do well enough in free-form, then you'll trigger the vocalist's version of star power.
Still wondering how the fuck this works.
Microphone doubles as a tambourine on many songs to combat super long guitar solos where the singer doesn't have much to do.
It was gay when Freddie MErcury did it, and it's gay today.
There will be a character creation system, and you can create multiple avatars that play different instruments.

It's a nice deal, but I don't have 170 bucks to spend on a single game right now, and so I'm still not doing it.
It's easier if you live in luxury, or under the purview of your parents, but most people are probably looking at cost analysis. I can always buy the drums later, and I probably will, but I'm not really interested in the drumming portion. The mic, OTOH, is something I'll want, and eventually I want the guitar, I can get by with my GH3 guitar to start with. I'm already plunking down 100 bucks on that game.

Unbundled Rock Band available at launch
The upcoming PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 2 game Rock Band is dependent on specialized microphone, guitar, and drum controllers that won't be available individually when the game launches. However, that isn't stopping developer Harmonix and MTV Games from selling stand-alone copies of the game from day one, in addition to the $169 bundle with the game and all three peripherals.
Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos gave a few more details on the company's Rock Band plans to the trade site Next-Gen in a recent interview. Rigopulos gave two reasons for the company's decision to release the game unbundled at launch, even though players won't be able to buy individual Rock Band instruments with which to play it at the time.
"Harmonix supports open platform standards in our game design, so people will most likely be able to use their existing peripherals with Rock Band," Rigopulos told the site in an opaquely worded reference to the Guitar Hero franchise Harmonix previously developed. "Furthermore, we know that many, many friends are planning to purchase a Rock Band bundle together, along with extra copies of the software, and then share the individual instruments among them."
As for when the official Rock Band instruments will be available outside of the bundle, Rigopulos only said that Harmonix is working to make them available "as soon as humanly possible."

Yeah, I am kinda disappointed after watching some videos today of people that got the game already. The guitar parts look pretty lame all around. That alone made me unsure of whether or not I would bother with the game. A group of people would be fun, but on your own? Eh.. didn't seem worth it.

Might just be on hard as they said hard on RB was like medium on GH with the orange key thrown in.
It doesn't really matter anyhow, as they've stated that a lot of the DLC will step up in difficulty, for those that play at that level.

How lame? What setting are they on?
I've seen some videos of both hard and expert. There is a guy that posted nothing but expert videos and they are just full of lame chords with barely any solos. Or it seems like their idea of a solo just doesn't look fun to play. :-\
Even with GH3's retarded use of triple chords to make the game harder, they at least had just some badass solos in their songs.
In a comparison video between GH3 and RB, they took some identical songs and put them side by side both on hard, and RB was incredibly easy. I don't know why they had to dumb it down. It's like.. they already did an awesome job before, why did they change how they did things?
Requiem
11-18-2007, 11:44 AM
Basically, I think it would be a ton of fun with a group of people, or if you were just doing the drums or vocals on your own. But Guitar/Bass... meh. I guess if they release stand-alone peripherals and the game, it would be easier just to use the old guitar to save having to get a new one for something you might not use a lot.. and then get the drums and mic seperate.
Edit: The most promising song -so far- looks to be Boston - Foreplay/Long Time
It's the only one I've seen so far with some good solos.
Edit 2: This is being reported as the hardest guitar chart in the game. Which, other than the freebird-like up/down parts, it doesn't look that challenging. Not saying it doesn't look fun to play, because it does... but - that's the hardest? :(

This is the problem Rock Band has faced since the start. That maybe the hardest guitar song, but whats the hardest band song? That's what they've aimed for and because Guitar Hero has made us harderned over 4 games, (this being the 5th) we are going to judge it guitar-wise.
I know enough people to play it full band style, but will everyone? At least everyone who can afford all the add-ons?
I reckon it will bomb. I really hope it won't and it will kill Guitar Hero and have full bands to love it.... But I doubt it, the console market is too casual these days for this type of game....

I'm so DL'n the Metallica Pack and "Juke Box Hero" like today.
The Rock Band Guitar takes a few verses to get used to. Yes the guitar portions aren't nearly as challenging as GH3 stuff (or even GH1 stuff) and I've only ever played on Expert. This however may be a break for some of you guys who find Expert on GH too frustrating to attempt; Rock Band's guitar portions are a laid back experience (Warning: some songs will surprise you). The mic works when you plug in an XB controller as well, so essentially you'll have five controllers hooked up to your XB at one time. Thankfully RB comes with a USB hub that fits four ports leaving two of the stock ports on the console free. RB Guitar, Drums, and Mic are all wired. It'll remind you of last generation with all the wires going about. Harmonix says it kepts the controllers wired to reduce cost. Atleast the Guitar could have been wired, the drum set just sits there and there's something naturally oldschool about the mic having a cord anyway.
Guitar:
The buttons will be the first thing that makes you go, "uh...ok..." They're more tabs than buttons and feels stickier than your average GH guitar at first. A few songs will break it in but it'll never feel quiet familiar. While playing a song you'll rarely notice and I nailed songs in the late 90 percentiles so it doesn't hurt your skill. The five mini-frets at the end of the neck will take some getting used to. You're gonna think you can play it during solo sections but your fingers will think different. You're gonna over-jump notes alot. I practiced the solo on "Wanted Dead or Alive" to get the feel for them. You don't have to strum during these sections (pretty gay, IMO) but you could if you wanted (just time it well; hit a lick and then strumming it will count as a miss). The effects switch is cute, if and when you get a chance to toggle it. And atleast three effects (of five) don't sound terribly different.
Mic:
Works like any other mic I guess. Your voice comes off on your TV speakers as you sing along with the song. With the XB controller you could adjust how loud you want the real singer to be as well as yourself. Think you got a track down, sing with no back-up!
Drums:
F'n awesome.
More to come.

I got this as well.
Kalyx is right in that if you can five star all the GH songs on expert this will be kinda boring. But I've beaten hard and over half of expert on GH 3 and am having a blast. A big part of it is that the notecharts are just better made here. In GH, if its easy, its boring. In rockband, if its easy, its still fun. Which is great, because GH kind of feels more like work than fun at times.
Drums:
F'n awesome
Mic:
It's singing. What else is there to say.
The DLC is supposedly harder, to please the GH masochists. About to DL it so I'll hit back here afterwards.

Went to friends house yesterday who had this game, we formed the full band. I was the singer for the group. Took a little getting used to at first, but after awhile was pretty easy. We switched it up a little, and seemed like people had more trouble with singing at first, but once you get over the learning curve not to hard. But yeah, most of my friends were to big of pussies to sing in front of everyone, so got stuck with it. We played for probably close to 3 1/2 or 4 hours, so my voice was shot after so long. But I still kept going cause I am hardcore. Only complaint I had is we would do mystery set lists and seemed to get a lot of the same songs. Like we did Blitzkrieg Pop and Sabatoge way to many times last night, thankfully they were two of my favorite songs in the game.

I should try vocals on hard or expert. Be funny to see if I can stack up to my own reputation.

Dumb question, but is there any way to download songs through the game itself? Seems it'd be more convenient than through XBLM.

May I also state that I LOVE the fact that you can download songs individually instead of altogether in a 3-pack. I don't think there was a single songpack where I wanted all three, but I DL'ed it anway cause I REALLY wanted one of the songs. Fantastic decision on harmonix's part.

Nah. The next GH game won't feature the use of guitars at all. It’ll be another retro game, Phonograph Hero: Rocks The 1880’s-1980’s. There will also be a special edition, packaged in an authentic, 1880’s Edison Phonograph.

They need more DLC. I have six tracks, but I'm itching for more. Just don't care for most of the rest of the stuff.

Question: I know there's a solo guitar tour, so can you play all the songs on it with your GH 3 guitar? Because I want to play Enter Sandman and the Metallica downloadable songs.

I can't imagine playing QotSA stuff unless I had to. Was tempted to grab the Metallica pack, but I don't want them showing up on my BWT.

Is obscure stuff like tribe, the only stuff you like? In that case good luck finding dlc you like.
Although I have to say tribe is one of the most fun songs in the game.

Man, are you always this bitchy, or does QotSA resonate with you that much?
Yes. I only like obscure stuff like Tribe. and Foreigner, and David Bowie. And CCR. And Joan Jett. And the fact that I'd download Metallica if not for the whole playing it in BWC certainly points to my hardon for obscure music.

Have they release "Who's Next" yet?

I'm not even sure I have the space for drums at my place. I bought the game alone, and have been using the LP and a headset.
Oh, and no, no Who's Next yet. Can't wait.

Any release date info on that? Love the who, not to mention The Seeker and Won't get fooled again are two of the most fun tracks to play out of all the guitar games. Seems like these games where made for The Who.

I'd love to see the Seeker for this game, but that cover was one of the weaker ones I've heard in a GH game, so....

Just picked up the game only. It's awesome. When I was a kid I remember playing along with Enter Sandman and Black Hole Sun on air guitar. Now I'm actually playing them.
I love how the crowd sings along sometimes. Tried to use a controller for the drums but it won't let you. But I read the drums will be sold seperately the end of January so i'll just wait until then and pick them up.
