lol god the Mets are the most quintessential mediocre .500 team ever. Blowing teams out of the water all week, only to turn around and look punchless in defeat.
.500 is still the goal. Inclined to think they fall a bit short just because I gotta assume Davis won't be back and Murphy is on a ridiculously hot stretch that might taper off. Still, way more fun to watch than last year's post-ASB Mets. |

Maybe it's because he was told minutes before warming up that he was about to be traded and had shit on his mind.

I don't think so. If he would've gotten traded before the game, he wouldn't have pitched.
Talk about getting traded will most likely be the excuse most people bring up, so only time will tell. |

News broke he was gonna get traded like an hour before first pitch. He had to have gotten word of it.

Ubaldo said that he knew he had been traded and didn't know why he was out pitching so he wasn't focused at all on the game and walked everyone.

My respect for Weaver tripled after throwing at the guy. More pitchers need to grow a set.
This coming from a Yankee fan who rarely sees a pitcher do anything. ARod and Jeter get plunked by Red Sox pitchers all day and they never do anything. SOMEONE ACT LIKE WEAVER |

I can understand Magglio Ordonez, because he was perhaps seeing if the ball was fair or foul (I'm playing devil's advocate here)...
...now, Carlos Guillen's little taunt was TOO MUCH. He was looking at Weaver straight in the eye as he walked, did 2 little hops, and started to jog around the bases... |

So, the Pirates "big" acquisitions are Derrek Lee - who has been in decline for the last 3 years, Ryan Ludwick - who desperately needed out of PETCO, and Jason Grilli - who is now on his 6th different team in an 11 year MLB career.
I know that it's a new thing for the Bucs to be buyers instead of sellers at the deadline, but if this is "big", then I'd hate to see "small". |

Cubs are making a playoff run. Don't you get it? That's why they didn't trade Jeff Baker and Reed Johnson. They needed those guys for this playoff run.

2 straight games now where the Mets rallied to tie it in the 9th in exciting fashion, only to immediately lose the next half inning.
Unreal. It seems like no matter what good things happen to them, they will always fall right back to .500 |

I love watching Daniel Murphy hit - but even I am starting to think they should ship him to an AL team this offseason. He doesn't have prototypical DH power, but he'd be a great guy to slide into the #2 spot.
It's just obvious that he lacks the ability and instinct to play defense in the major leagues, not even at 1B. |

I think the Pirates' GM understands that the fact they are even remotely in the race is a fluke considering the way their roster is currently constructed. Lee and Ludwick add some veteran depth and Grilli is...well, he's there. But still, I liked what the Pirates did. They didn't overspend or mortgage their future for the sake of competing for one lone year.
Cleveland, on the other hand, may have shit the bed. I get that they're in contention, but who honestly thinks a team that is hovering above .500 and had one really good month is a legitimate playoff contender? I sure as shit don't, and I think they made a very poor move in selling off the careers of two potentially very good starting pitchers to have the services of another for a lowly three years. Let's be honest here. The Indians are only competing for the division because both the White Sox, who were heavily favored, and the Twins, who are always solid, have been complete, utter failures this year. Here's a quote from ESPN's Keith Law; "The main problem for Cleveland here is that it is incorrectly evaluating its own team -- the Indians shouldn't be buying, and while I could forgive them for not selling, that would be the smarter move for a team still trying to rebuild. Since a fluky 30-15 start driven largely by a schedule with more cupcakes than a Sprinkles bake shop, Cleveland is 23-36 and has been outscored by 77 runs in that span -- that is, it has been outscored by over a run and a quarter per game. Superman isn't going to close that gap, and while there are things to like about Ubaldo Jimenez, Superman he ain't." Before even reading that, I was harping on at work about it. I think the Indians have made a piss poor decision in trading for a guy who's velocity has dipped and hasn't been good since the first half of 2010. I understand why they'd try to upgrade, but there were other solid pitching options out there that they would not have had to sell 4-7 years of two solid starting pitchers' careers for. Fact is, Cleveland is a fluke, and they just knee jerked their way into digging a deeper hole into their franchise by buying a less than stellar Ubaldo Jimenez. In about 3 years, the Rockies are going to look like geniuses, much like they did when they hosed the Atheltics in the Matt Holliday deal. Meanwhile, my Padres made what I perceived to be as a very good move in trading premiere set up man Mike Adams to the Rangers for RHP Robbie Erlin, who is listed as the 34th best prospect in all of baseball according to Baseball America, and Joe Wieland, who recently threw a no hitter and is being touted as cracking the top 100 prospects lists at some point next year. I admit I wanted the Padres to bring in some offense. The system is in dire need of above average offensive position players, espcially at shortstop. But although that's not what the Padres did, they were able to net themselves two guys who project to be middle to back end starters who will be well suited for PETCO park. Considering that Adams was originally picked off of the minor league free agent scrap heap, and has since turned into one of the best set up men in the game, the package the Padres received for his services is pretty damn good. |

There's a lot of smoke coming from this " Ubaldo might be hurt " talk. I'm starting to wonder. If he's not hurt and turns out to be a legit ace, Cleveland wins this trade. Believe me, I love taking and reading about prospects, but you just never know about some of these guys
Take a guy like Josh Vitters in the Cubs farm system. This guy in 2009 and 10, was one of the top 50 prospects in baseball. Now I'm not entirely sure if he's still alive. They aren't guaranteed to be hits. P.s. I bought espn insider just to read about baseball prospects heh. Among other things ofcourse. |

I understand no prospect is a guarantee, but the Indians are not a guarantee to compete in what has otherwise been a division dominated by three better teams. Two of those teams have tanked, but even then, the ChiSox are right on Detroit and Cleveland's ass.
My issue with Cleveland is that they're going "all in", when they're scraping to play .500 ball. They're not a playoff team, and going against powerhouses like Texas, Boston and New York, they have no chance. Ubaldo, even if he's on fire, is not going to change that, much like Sabathia didn't change a thing for the Brewers. I understand Cleveland trying to get better, but when your franchise is in rebuilding mode, you don't trade away two guys, one of which was already starting in the big leagues, for a 3 year rental when you can't guarantee your window of opportunity will last past this season. Even if they somehow pull the division title out of all this, the Ubaldo trade will still be a bad decision. Trading for a player like that, where you have to give up a lot to get him, is a "win now" move that teams like Texas (see Mike Adams and Koji Uehara) can afford to make because their core talent gives them a legitimate opportunity to win a title for the forseeable future. The Indians are no longer in that position. They blew their shot in 2007. 4 years later, they have still yet to recover with little hope in sight, and trading away very valuable pitching options for one fluke season, in my opinion, was not the right move, regardless of how the season plays out. Vitters has plate discipline issues, which is why he's dropped of the prospect lists. He's still only 21 years old, so there's hope. Even if he doesn't improve his plate discipline, he could still be a solid regular me thinks. And I have ESPN Insider. I bought it primarily for Keith Law. I don't really care for anyone else on there. |

Not to mention, that trade demolished them. While they made the playoffs, they didn't retain Sabathia, and they lost out on getting draft picks for him walking to the Yankees, who gave up their 1st rounder to the Angels that year after signing Tex. So really, outside of an exciting 2 months and a week, the Sabathia trade accomplished absolutely nothing. Doug Melvin was smarter this time around, and traded for two top of the rotation starters who fit right in, and are controllable past this year. Add that Weeks, Braun and Gallardo are still going to be around, and the Brewers don't look so bad even when they lose Prince after this season. They went into a "win now and later" mode. Their guys are still young and there's a window of opportunity this time around. Couldn't say that in 2008. |

Wait, how did the Sabathia trade demolish the Brewers? They gave up LaPorta who's turning out to be a huge bust and a couple other no name prospects that haven't panned out.
