It's more their PC output, although they have pretty much run Assassins Creed into the ground since Revelations. That's kind of the worry I have about Watch Dogs, showing all these mechanics and looking great in a set piece, but actually doing that in game will be very different. Much like the reveals of Assassins Creed and the original coming out.

Far Cry 3 was surprisingly ace. I need to finish that up at some point.

Yes you do. It just gets better and I really liked the ending.

Also, patch on the way that allows you to repopulate outposts, which is awesome.

They've gotten pretentious in my view, which stings because I love Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six.

Yeah I had problems with that too. No idea why that part is so hard. It gets really fun again after that, so stick with it.

The used game ban rumors were squashed by the boss of SCE in an interview with Eurogamer.

Here comes the first real bad news about the PS4 and unlike the no BC with PS3 games, this one involves PSN itself.

For comparisons with Nintendo, the 3DS didn't allow everything from DSiware to be transferable at launch but the wait wasn't too long (a month?) while everything from the Wii was transferable but only could be playable within the "virtual Wii" and not as part of the Wii U.

Sony has another plan to deal with the lack of backwards compatibility and it involves continuing the HD re-release and remake series but this time including PS3 games.

The developer for The Witness clarifies some info regarding its timed exclusive status as it only towards console versions. The PC and iOS version is planned to be released the same day as the PS4 version.

Sony once again confirms DualShock 3 controllers are not compatible at all with the PS4 even though they share the same Bluetooth capabilities as the PS4 controller. Once cloud-based PS3 games start arriving for the PS4, only the DualShock 4 controller and PS Move can be used.

If you accept backwards compatibility now, then what happens when you have to release the PS5 which combines the PS1 emulation, the PS2 emotion engine, the PS3 cell and the PS4's architecture? what about the PS6? Their job is to make the system that makes the most sense now.

The BC problem is that they used it as a MAJOR selling point to get people to buy a PS2.

There, the base question was "Why would I update to a PS2 when I already have a perfectly good Playstation? Oh, I can play the shit I already got? Cool!" Most people aren't as hardcore about "the best picture". In this case, it was more "DVD works fine. But it might be worth my while if I can play all my PS2 games that I already own..." That somehow turned out to be a fiasco for Sony, who somehow decided that a major selling point for their previous system could somehow just be swept under the rug for the current one. Who cares if it can play PS1 games? Most people getting a PS3 are upgrading from a PS2. Can't afford them the same luxury again, huh?

The "resell in HD" is lazy and greedy. Having the OPTION to buy something you already may own again is a nice feature, and if it is good enough/loved enough, it is possibly worth doing (hell, I OWN Symphony of the Night for PS1 and still downloaded it on my XBOX) but making it MANDITORY is just stupid. Especially from the company that set the standard in making home consoles backwards compatable. Pretty sure people don't like being FORCED to buy something more than once... especially if they didn't lose it or have it stolen.


Nintendo actually got this one right with their handhelds... pretty much every generation had a stop-gap for the previous gen cart and the newer one, and only did away with them on re-designs of the same system later in its cycle. Game Boy Color could play original GB titles, the Advance could play GBC (and by extention, original carts) until the relase of the Advance SP, the DS did away with the older Game Boy playability, but kept the Advance for awhile. Pretty sure they continued this trend with the DSi and the 3DS, but I still use my original tank DS/Advance Wars Dual Strike combo to accomplish any time passing needed). They lead in with people being able to use the older stuff, then get people addicted to the new. Then, they tie THAT format to the newest system, and then get people on the new format. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Sony, on the other hand, seems content with the strategy of "LOOK HOW POWERFUL OUR NEW (X) IS!!!" ... and ignore anyone who ever had anything for their previous forray. It almost smacks of "Oh, hey, you like our PS3? Well fuck you, we're on PS4 now. Catch up." Meanwhile, average Joe Q. Consumer (who isn't to be confused with Mr. Early Adopter) is weighing what they already have and spent on his game library against an upgrade. If you can't play what you already own from jump, and Sony doesn't subsidize that with a true first party must-have killer app, that guy is going to wait for a system price drop. And that guy is a larger market than the one who just has to be the first kid on his block to own the next hot thing.

Sony doesn't NEED to emulate PS1 shit. Too old. PS2 is even questionable at this point... but PS3 would make sense. You're asking people to fork over launch price money because a couple of cool looking vids and supposedly better controller. What about people who have "yellow lighted" systems (hardware failure is still a thing, even after the slim redesign). What about people who don't have Bill Gates money? Would be nice just to woo them to the new console instead of asking them to either buy another PS3 or just start all over again on a PS4.

I don't know what you mean here. Do you know what the word mandatory means. It means you literally must do it. How is someone being forced to rebuy something? You couldn't play your PS1 SotN on the Xbox, so are you saying you were FORCED to pay for it to play it on the Xbox?

Your "Average Joe Consumer" will have traded in most of his PS3 games, and will have gotten bored of the other ones, or won't be playing the old CoD because people will be playing the new CoD.

It's not the average joe that cares about backwards compatibility, it's the geek who has to ferry their precious game collection. I've been there and it was a constant source of anxiety. Oh, my wife will probably be dead by 2060 but as long as I don't have to spend £3 to rebuy Bishi Bashi Special it will all be okay. It's funny how you're ready to abandon PS1 and PS2 stuff now, aren't you confirming that it's all disposable anyway? What makes the PS3 stuff any more valuable.

Also I lose you again with your last sentence of "Asking them to buy another PS3", if they've had a hardware failure? If they've had a hardware failure out of warranty, how is that different to any other product in the history of mankind? Bill Gates money, you're having a laugh. Consoles aren't that expensive. Even the PS3 wasn't as expensive as it seemed at the time. The 6+ years of Xbox Live Gold add up but none of them break the bank.

The emphasis on multiplayer this generation makes the games more disposable than ever. Some people may have been worried about their PS1 games at the time, but that's a combination of things.

Sony is financially in the shit and adding PS3 hardware to the PS4 would be expensive and obtrusive as fuck. PS are ridiculously generous with their PSN network and you may find that it's easier to play PS3 stuff than you think.

I'm at the point now where I start to think the sane thing for an individual to do is let go of stuff. Hoarding product makes us ill. The desire to have the physical object makes people do strange things.

You wouldn't be able to reobtain them if the hard drive goes. If you've got disc games, you can just replace the disc/console by buying a new one, but if then console goes, you wouldn't be able to login and re-download the games.

Xbox owners may have a similar fate, but the hope is there will be new stuff to keep us busy. If I can't play certain 360 games on the next Xbox I'll just keep an old one around and healthy.
