So does anybody here actually still buy music?

Dunno, just bought a few albums on itunes. I mean personally I like to buy when possible, particularly when its an up and coming group and shit, but I know people who refuse to buy any music at all, they just pillage artists entire discographies for the fun of it...what about yowselves?

It depends on the band really, I buy local stuff thats my small way of supporting local artists.

But I never buy online.

Yeah I haven't bought a CD in years tbh.. I dunno, if a local band that was good had a CD I would probably buy it. When my friend's group puts out their first, I will def. buy it, seeing as I already pay money to go to their shows and it is worth it.. but other stuff, it is too convenient to just download something now.

Was reading an interview with Trent Reznor a while back and he was talking about how downloading music was just going to be how it is now. Like there is really nothing the record companies are ever going to do to completely stop it, so if groups want to still make money from record sales they're going to have to adapt the way they go about doing it. His last album was released free online, with an option to pay like 5 bucks and get higher quality downloads, or to pay even more and I think get like a hard copy of it.

Same deal with Radiohead. They released it free, or offered the option to pay and get better quality. It is a pretty solid plan. Reznor also helped another artist Saul Williams produce his album, and released it with a similar method. The numbers weren't nearly as high, but the artist himself was actually really pleased with how many people actually payed for it when given the option.

I'm always buying albums on CD. I usually buy them cheap off Amazon marketplace, most of the time new but if I'm dirt poor then maybe second-hand. In the past 3 days I have received 5 albums:

Boston - Boston
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Greatest Hits
Sparks - Kimono my house (hahaha)
Ryan Adams - Jacksonville city nights
David Bowie - Low

(Commence this being a thread of people posting lists.)

I love music so I'm always going to be checking out new bands, and old stuff, and buying new albums whenever possible.

Probably in a couple of weeks I'll buy some metal albums.

The music should be an advert for the live show. This culture has led bands to have to go out and tour much more frequently rather than just collect the revenues from their album sales.

And in return, we all get endless music libraries and a more vast and regular option of live music.

I don't see downloading as too detremental on the music industry. Just a new change.

Pretty much exactly what he said about it. If he needs money, he said he can go on tour, which rakes in a more than adequate amount and is more enjoyable, albeit stressful at the same time.

I think it's a shame how people are just ripping off the artists because they're too cheap to spend 12-17 bucks every few months on an album by bands they are supposed to be a fan of.

I buy albums, because I want the top quality, I want the sleevenotes, I want the booklet...everything. Plus I want to support the bands work, that they put a lot of effort into.

Downloads are shit.

CDs still allow the uncompressed originals.

That being said, I buy MP3s through eMusic and have bought one album off the Amazon Mp3 store so far. Most of my music is purchased, and most of it is purchased used. I just picked up most of the Barenaked Ladies catalogue for about 2.50 apiece, shipping included. Unless it's a local artist, something I have to have immediately, or someone I really care about, I'm probably getting it used, or digital. Especially used, because it's a legal way of not supporting the recording industry.

CDs are completely obsolete to me. There is no situation where I would use a CD to play music, unless it is an MP3 CD in my car. No point in having 12 tracks per disc and like 928375978235 discs.

I will buy a CD to support an artist that I enjoy. I know they don't see hardly any money from it, but if they go platinum or whatever I feel satisfied. I enjoy the artwork and leaflets and such sometimes.

I still use CD's in my car, it just seems easier to me. Trying to find a song on my ipod while I drive has gotten me into some near collisions before.

MP3 CDs. Easy solution. Plus, I can hold an artist's entire library if it's not insane.

My stock head unit doesn't play MP3 discs. I haven't bothered to go after market because I would lose the functionality of one of the screens in my car due to the design of it. Unfortunate, but not a big deal.

Is it an old car? Most of the new models I have any experience with can support a CD changer, which means you can buy an MP3 CD changer. With the sheer number of tracks you can put on them, you don't need to change the discs frequently.

If I buy something it is a CD or DVD, I have never paid for downloads.

Never will either I guess.

At Best Buy and stuff, there are all these $50 and $100 iTunes gift cards... like around Christmas time they were everywhere. Kinda makes me sad, because some old aunt or grandmother or something probably spent $100 on that shit to give as a gift when the kid probably already downloads everything for free.

I generally download a majority of my music for my MP3 player, but all are older songs from artists that have made shitloads on album sales already (ie. Beatles, KRS-ONE, Nas, Pink Floyd etc etc)

I still buy the odd CD once in a while, not too often though since I usually download mp3's for free.

I dont care enough about most artists to feel ashamed for dling their music, but artists like rancid, nofx, and pink floyd I will buy alot of their cds, and sometimes buy lps. I still have an LP copy of Metallica's "And Justic for All" that I bought in Pathmark when it first came out.

I find if you are into buying albums rather than just one or two songs, then you tend to be able to buy albums on CD cheaper than on MP3, especially the good old shit.

Used it's a lot cheaper. You can usually get old music for the price of 2-3 music downloads, so why not? It's a little easier to pay less for music downloads compared to a new record.

On the other hand, I usually skip buying digital unless the disc is obscure, out of print, or otherwise unavailable. I like Amazon's MP3 service, and I like eMusic, but a lot of bands use iTunes only, and I'm very much anti-DRM.
