Lightbulb Man, i miss WCW cruiserweight matches..i can watch them all day srsly

Rey Mysterio vs Kidman vs Juventud 27.12.98

I honestly think that this is what the WWE can use right now, especially on RAW. People are wanting to see some fast-paced, high flying matches once in a while other than Kofi's.

I don't know where this thread is going to go, but Thoughts? If you aren't going to discuss, at least plug in a great WCW cruiserweight match in here so i can watch it

Besides that crap main event with Nash and Goldberg, this is the only match I remember from Starcade 98.

Also, when it comes to what WWE could use for their product, they could use MANY things for it. The problem is they don't...they are such a political mess at this point that unless WWE did a major overhaul on their product, you're not getting anything more than what you see on Monday and Friday nights.

Be thankful things like Youtube and DailyMotion is around so you can watch stuff like this anytime you want...at least you get something.

Was a time when WWE cou;d have had an amazing cruiserweight division. They had Mysterio, Chavo, Tajiri, Shannon Moore, Kidman, Jamie Noble, Jimmy Yang etc.

Oh, and ULTIMO FUCKING DRAGON

What was great about that match that was posted was that Kidman, Juventud, and Mysterio all understood how to sell spots throughout the match. They didn't just keep bouncing up and running the ropes like nothing effected them.

I often cringe during Billy Kidman matches when he'd do a high risk spot, but I actually like him as a ground-based worker. I wouldn't mind him coming out of FCW to work in a tag team with Norman Smiley, or something. They could use their job as trainers showing the young guys how to wrestle as a gimmick.

But, to be honest, the WWE abolishing their cruiserweight division has been the best thing for them. With the Cruiserweight Title gone, smaller guys have managed to be mixed into the heavyweight scene a lot more seemlessly. Jamie Noble got to be in a fantastic program with Chuck Palumbo, in which he looked fantastic, for example. The Brian Kendrick got to unofficially win the WWE Championship, and Evan Bourne is on the rise.

With Dos Caras coming in, I think there is still some interest in putting those sort of matches on occasionally, but hopefully it can sort of reach a higher niche platform. But this is the WWE we are talking about...

No, Noid. Abolishing the Cruiserweight division has NOT been the best thing for them. If you want to elevate a smaller talent, you don't have to get rid of an entire fucking division just to do it. The Noble and Kendrick mini-pushes could've happened with or without a cruiserweight division - you're just thinking about it from some fucked up perspective where a singles push of a smaller individual cannot coexist with a cruiserweight division.

Getting rid of the Cruiserweight division has been good for no one. Not for the fans, not for the dozens of exciting and talented performers who have been dismissed over the past couple years due to the company having "nothing for them," no one. I mean, come on.

Kill off the Diva's title, put the real women's wrestler's on Raw, burn some dead wood, put SmackDown back on the road with ECW (after The In Crowd jumps to Raw) and you'll have room for the CW title on SmackDown and ECW.

After watching the Rey DVD, I never realized how great the Rey/Malenko series of matches were. Could watch them all day.

I hardly think WWE NEEDS a cruiserweight division. It'd be nice, but it's not like we can't see, say Bourne vs. Chavo for the US Title or something. Sure, there are a lot of talented guys out there that could benefit from the WWE having a cruiserweight division, but it's not that big of a deal imo.

and yes, WCW had some great cruiser matches. Dean Melenko vs. Ultimo Dragon being my favorite.

I'd rather see the European Title come back before the Cruserweight. That way it is open to all non-main event people and non-tiny-flying-flipping-guys.

Getting rid of the Cruiserweight division has been good for no one. Not for the fans, not for the dozens of exciting and talented performers who have been dismissed over the past couple years due to the company having "nothing for them," no one. I mean, come on.
It'd be nice to believe that, but do you really see the WWE pushing cruiserweights as fair game to the heavyweights when there is a Cruiserweight Title around? Of course they should be treated better regardless of the title scene, but you know that's not the way it works.

There are exceptions to this, of course, but they generally prove the rule. Before the Cruiserweight Title went bye-bye, there was pretty much no chance Chavo Guerrero was going to ever get a crack at winning a bigger belt, because the Cruiserweight Title was always calling him back. With the Cruiserweight Title gone, he was able to win the ECW Championship, which is a little higher on the ladder than the Cruiserweight Title.

The word "cruiserweight" isn't even used on WWE television anymore. They are actually being judged on their abilities, and style, and not on their size. The best Jimmy Wang Yang has looked in the WWE was when he and Shannon Moore were chasing John Morrison & The Miz for the WWE Tag Team Championships. They never won the belts, but they came damn close so many times, and the fans were so into them. They looked far better than they ever did in the cruiserweight division. Both guys can actually say they've defeated a former World Champion in John Morrison now. Of course, Shannon Moore ended up getting released, but if you believe the stories, Vince never really liked him that much and just hired him because his girlfriend wanted him in the company.

I can't really think of any push that has suffered because the cruiserweight division is gone. Can you name me one? All the pushes have been greater, and as lovely as it is to think they could have happened anyway, if you pushed guys like Jimmy Wang Yang, Jamie Noble, Shannon Moore, Hurricane Helms, Brian Kendrick and Chavo Guerrero while the division was around, then who the fuck is going to be in the division? It's just something the WWE has never been able to deal with -- pushing smaller guys while they hold a smaller guys' title. The closest I think they've ever come to is Gregory Helms.

Also, which talent were released because the WWE got rid of the Cruiserweight Title? Nunzio is gone, which is a damn shame, but he could have been used in a tag team or something. Or as an enhancement guy. Shannon Moore also got cut, but we've addressed him. Funaki, Jimmy Yang, Jamie Noble, Hornswoggle, Chavo Guerrero, Gregory Helms and Brian Kendrick are all still around.

Look, if the WWE could bring back the Cruiserweight Title, and treat the guy holding it as the best guy of his weight class, fine. Do it. They had the chance to do that when Gregory Helms was Cruiserweight Champion and Rey Mysterio was World Heavyweight Champion, though. A little rivalry between the two with Helms claiming to be on equal ground as Rey because he's the Champion of Cruiserweights and Rey is a cruiserweight could have been really cool. They hinted at it with a match between the two, but I think Helms wanted to ditch the Cruiserweight Title for the World Heavyweight belt, or something, and he got handedly taken down by Mysterio. Not cool.

I am the king of pipe-dreams around here, but could you honestly see the WWE treating cruiserweights seriously within a division? I mean, they put the fucking title on Hornswoggle for crying out loud!

I loved Dean Malenko and Chris Jericho's interactions with the Cruiserweight Title in WCW. I remember some fantastic matches between the two, and with them facing others.

One moment of awesomeness: Jericho just beat Juventud Guerra after he passed out in the Liontamer, and Jericho goes up to the camera all panicked "I just killed Juvi!"

People don't really NEED working livers or lungs when they can be hooked up to huge machines and be immobile for the rest of their short lives.

(A little bit of hyperbole mixed into the comparison)

I'm not wasting time debating you. It's ludicrous. Your example of Chavo Guerrero and the CW Title constantly "calling him back," keeping him from achieving higher means like the US or ECW Title, is asinine. It's called BOOKING, Noid. It would not be difficult to elevate Chavo from the CW division up to a higher spot on the card. It's not necessary to get rid of the entire division for the theory that it will be "freeing up" more talent for other things. It's all in the manner of the booking and has nothing to do with the titles at stake or the divisions in question.

That is all.

It does when the company is completely incapable of booking a cruiserweight division. If the WWE did everything effectively and efficiently, they might be in a boom period, but they're not.

Evan Bourne is a prime example. If there were a Cruiserweight Division around, he'd be feuding with someone like Jamie Noble. It would be a lot of fun. They would get two minutes on SmackDown! while the commentators talked about the Bra & Panties Match coming up later in the evening. Without that role for Bourne to immediately be slotted into (which he logically would if there was a Cruiserweight Title around), he's been able to have much better matches on ECW, work with guys in that main event scene, and is one of the more popular guys in the company. He's pretty much a lock for Money in the Bank this year, something a Paul London never did.
