They all looked like they were from the same gang, so there are probably other gangs/mobs in the game.

There better be, anyway.

Early this morning, Rockstar released the first plot summary of GTA: SA, which confirmed its early 1990s millieu. Here it is verbatim:

"Five years ago Carl Johnson escaped from the pressures of life in Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs and corruption. Where filmstars and millionaires do their best to avoid the dealers and gangbangers.

Now, it's the early 90s. Carl's got to go home. His mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.

On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets."

All the information released by Rockstar indicates that the controversial Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has not lost the rough-and-ready nature of its predecessors.

Tony Montana
05-12-2004, 11:12 PM
Nah it is exclusive to PS2.

The only thing I am worried about is it will be getting too similar to The Getaway with all the different raced gangs etc which I didn't really enjoy seeing 100's of jamaicans running after me with machine guns so I doubt I am gonna feel any different doing it on GTA.

Another thing was the family mentioned. That is a new elemant to any GTA game which I am not sure it will make the game better or worse, have to wait till it comes out.

Don't spread rumors. There is nothing comfirmed about swimming.

If you're going to let swimming in, just make it so you're able to do it for like 10 seconds. So in case you fall in you can swim out.

Ok update on features. The second picture is "suppose" to be the main character.

Also, GameInformer posted a 10 page preview with new screens. (They've told everyone to take them offline so I haven't seen the shots but when I find them...) Here's a summary on them.

Screenshots
- One pic shows the inside of a house, with rendered interior environments. There is furniture inside the house.
- One shows a helicopter with its searchlights on a runaway criminal.
- The others show how the main character can get fat, its a pic of him (fat) crossing the street with a donut shop in the background.
- One shows two other characters that are apart of the main character's crew.
- One shows a gang carjacking. Three guys with doo rag masks are carjacking other guys.
- One shows a four person drive-by.
- Another one shows a california type pimped out car.
- The last one shows the background of LA with a smog sky.

General
- The game is more serious than the others, but the elements of comedy are still there.
- A full staff of reasearch personnel at Rockstar have been studying Las Vegas, San Diego, and Los Angeles for months to ensure that they truly capture the feelings of these cities.

Location
- The game will not take place in Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Las Vegas. It will take place IN ALL THREE as well as the countryside in between.
- Los Angeles will be called Los Santos, San Francisco will be called San Fieero, and Las Vegas will be called Las Venturra.
- Each city is about the same size as Vice City.
- Not all cities will be open at the start of the game.
- The entire game will be about four to six times as large as Vice City.
- San Fierro (San Francisco) will have hills. This city is more driving based.
- You can drive from LA, through the countryside, up a mountain, into San Fran, and onto Las Vegas.
- Driving through the desert won’t be empty and plain with a couple cacti...it will be vibrant and alive with weird things to see.
- There will be a lot more buildings with open interiors.

Graphics
- The graphics engine has been tweaked. Smog will be present in LA, and real-time reflections on cars, windows, and mirrors, as well as new techniques like radial lighting, which allows for more realistic shadowing, and soft-shadow lighting for interior levels will be present.
- Everything in the game now has independent models for day and night to give better lighting and shadowing.
- The game will have ragdoll physics, or “impact animation” in Rockstar’s words.

Vehicles
- As for vehicles, there will be pimped-out lowriders, and 90’s versions of some GTA3/VC cars will return.
- There will be bicycles.

Story
- Characters from the past will return.

Gameplay
- In the Las Vegas city, you will be able to buy and build a casino - and then run it.
- You can then gamble your money in the casino.
- Your character can wield duel pistols and potentially other weapons.
- You need to eat to retain your stamina. If you eat too much fast food, you become fat and pedestrians mock you for being fat. You also run slower. To remedy this, you can go to a gym to exercise.
- You can now rob homes. The robberies will require skill and planning, however.
- You can recruit gang members and use them to do four person drive-by’s.

Weapons
- The choice of weapons will match the time in which the era of the early 90's.

Artificial Intelligence
- Enemy/pedestrian AI will be greatly revamped and they will think more logically. You can't beat someone to death in broad daylight and not have people notice and react.
- Your enemies will be smarter, which will make robbing houses take a lot of skill.

Music
- There will be a rap station, but there will be a variety of other stations as always.

Also, on top of that there is another list about GameInformer.

GTA: San Andreas Features are....
-Improved Targeting System
-Dual Weapons
-Swimming
-New Stamina Meter, Meaning you'll need to eat and maintain weight.
-House Break-Ins
-3 Citys = 1 State
Los Santos (Los Angeles),
San Fierro (San Fransico), and
Las Venturra (Las Vegas)
-You Will Play as Carl Johnson
-More Hills
-Improved AI
-Ability to Ride Bicycles
-Four-Person Drive Bys
-Ability to recurit new gang members
-Takes place in Early 1990's
-Improved Grahpics, as well as detail
-Improved Interiors

Those are both two different sources stating, mostly, the same thing, so I believe it's quite reliable. Some of it may be false but, as of now, this is what everyone can expect from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

In Vice City when I was pissed off I'd get a prostitute to hop in my car and I'd drive the sucker into the ocean and jump out at the last second. The prostitute would stay in the car and try to get out after it landed in the water. Drowned every time! Then I'd have fun shooting the car until it blew up.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I know in games like Battlefield when I parachute in the water and I have to swim to land I just kill myself it takes so long. Would get old fast. And if you could swim for just a while the times you accidently fall in you have enough time to get out.

I would jump to the conclusion that everyone remembers how large GTA III and Vice City were so with that in mind: The entire game is approximately four to six times as large as either GTA III or Vice City.

San Fierro has plenty of hills and thus is more focused on driving. Specialty vehicles can be unlocked to bring new fun to the environment of the cities. (I would guess we're talking about some off road vehicles here...or something to that extent)

Because of some new streaming and rendering that Rockstar designed themselves, San Andreas will feature environments that are both more intricate and more interactive than Vice City.

The graphics engine has been overhauled and now has new techniques like radial lighting which gives more realistic shadowing. The engine also includes real-time reflections on cars, windows, and mirrors, and soft-shadow lighting for interior levels.

San Andreas will push the limits on interiors. While Vice City introduced the idea of interiors, most of them were nothing but detailed save points. In SA however, tons of interiors have been fully rendered out and made more interactive, for example robbing houses.

San Andreas will have scores of unique interiors, dozens of restaurants, and a fully operational casino. While many of these would have been mere novelties in the past, they now directly affect your characters progression, abilities, and even appearance.

Purchasing buildings was just touched on in Vice City. Now, it has a much higher importance. In San Andreas the idea of building your criminal empire has been taken a lot further, for example in Las Venturra you can buy, build, and run your own casino. Every part of the San Andreas society will be precise - from the rich residents to the ones living in suburban areas to the maniacs in the countryside. San Andreas will push the envelope on feeling more like a living, breathing world than its predecessors were.

The game is not about gangbanging. There will be a rap station, but as always there will be a variety of other types of music. No details on the radio stations has been released.

San Andreas will have some characters from past games making reappearances or being mentioned. There will be plenty of fun things to catch if you followed the stories of the previous games.

NPCs now react to you more intelligently with their new "brains." For example, before you could kill someone in the middle of the street in broad daylight and have no one notice. This won’t be the case in San Andreas. NPC intelligence now has a need for hour long recording sessions, which was only ten minutes in Vice City. San Andreas will have plenty of well known and some excellent unknown voice acting talents.

You will also be able to recruit gang members to aid you during missions, and one use for them is a four person drive-by. You can run your gang, but you won’t be checking on inventory or anything like that. You will run it in a way where you are kept in the story, through phone calls and speaking to people. In Vice City and GTA III you were either on a mission or you weren’t, and the story didn’t feel like it progress outside the missions. Well now the game changes all the time. While you aren’t on a mission, you can things that reflect your position in the storyline. You can take up side missions where you can learn a skill you need for a mission.

Money has a greater use than it did in Vice City. Outside missions you can rob homes to earn some cash. However, house robbing is nothing like carjacking. It will take a lot of skill and planning to pull it off.

As you progress in the story, you can open up new things to do outside missions, which are still tied into the story. In Las Venturra you can gamble your money in your casino. The way things unlock are more complex now. There are basic tutorials at the start of the game, and then on each mission you can learn a skill. So in every mission you will be doing something new, and the game will stay fresh and challenging throughout the story.

Your character also changes depending on what you do. There are plenty of restaurants around San Andreas and you have to eat to stay healthy and retain your stamina. If you eat fast food often and don’t go to the gym, your character becomes fat, and this changes the game. Pedestrians call you a fat bastard, your running speed and strength are low, and your character’s physics change. Being fat makes missions more difficult or in some cases not possible. To fix being fat, you can go to gyms to work out. Working out gives you strength and more speed, and your character model looks fit. Rockstar wants to make you feel like you have complete control over the story and over your character, and this example of his weight is just the tip of the iceberg.

The targeting and camera systems are being overhauled. While no details have been released, Rockstar made references to features in Manhunt, and promises that the targeting will be really fun this time.

All new animations have been designed. Hand-to-hand combat will be more improved to include more variety in stances, attacks, and control over the fighting. There will be new styles of carjacking. Swimming is now included in the game. Rockstar has put in a lot of new weapons with more variety, and also focused on revamping old ones to feel more unique. Your character can dual wield pistols and possibly other weapons.

The vehicle physics engine is being changed to improve car handling and open up the possibility of new types of transportation. Vice City ranged from a moped to a plane, and the range in SA is much bigger at both ends this time. You can even ride a bicycle in San Andreas and you will have to press buttons to pedal it.
-Game Informer

A lot of that I had already posted but there is some more in depth and new stuff there. Let's take a second to think about this. By the time the first information of Vice City came out they revealed very small details on the new features. Same with III. Yet, now they are releasing what we would conisder "huge" information from the first article. I believe this is just the beginning to what we can expect from San Andreas.

Yeah, I know what you mean. They both had their pluses. I liked III better in general as a game but I loved some of the features in Vice City. Loved them both though.

Notice the picture of the house break in. The guy in the middle is either crouching and walking or using wall cover. They said that it would have the gameplay feel like Manhunt and it had wall cover so maybe you will be able to use it in this one.

I personally don't think swimming will be in it....I hope not!

As a side note - GTA3, and VC have had swimming "confirmed" months before they were released...at least that's what 99% of the websites said.

But most of my friends think drowning shouldn't be in the game, you should be able to tread water indefinitely. If that's the case it could possibly ruin the game and I'm not just saying that. Picture how long it would take to swim from way out in the ocean to the shore....it's petrifying. However, if it were only for a few seconds or if there were a breath-o-meter (Toe Jam and Earl comes to mind) that would be cool because then when you slip off a dock you don't just die.

I personally don't see the big deal in swimming, it's never bugged me.

However, the game looks so damn sweet! I'm gonna be the fattest gang banging thug ever!

DS
05-19-2004, 10:49 PM
I know personally that they never confirmed swimming for VC and I doubt they did for 3 either because nobody cared about it then. It was brand new to 3 so nobody was saying "I hope they have swimming because dying in the water is just stupid" and I know after reading many, MANY, sites for VC that they only had it as rumors. It will be in this one. No diving but just enough to get across.

Yeah, i think i see both sides of the coin, i wouldnt like swimming to be a drag to the game, and i wouldnt like it to take away the feature of dying in the water in certain scenarios, since on previous GTA's dying by falling in the water was what made some missions difficult. But i hate the fact that in reality you wouldnt drown by falling in the water. I kinda like the idea of having an air gauge or whatever.

Location
- Each city is about the same size as Vice City.
Will half of it be beach?
- The entire game will be about four to six times as large as Vice City.
Cool
- Driving through the desert won’t be empty and plain with a couple cacti...it will be vibrant and alive with weird things to see.
:y:
- There will be a lot more buildings with open interiors.
:y:
Graphics
- The game will have ragdoll physics, or “impact animation” in Rockstar’s words.
Like hitman? **** yea
Vehicles
- There will be bicycles.
Hope they get you unfat
Story
- Characters from the past will return.
I hope I can kill tommy
Gameplay
- In the Las Vegas city, you will be able to buy and build a casino - and then run it.
Cool Cool
- Your character can wield duel pistols and potentially other weapons.
Like hitman? **** yea!
- You need to eat to retain your stamina. If you eat too much fast food, you become fat and pedestrians mock you for being fat. :( You also run slower.
I'll kill them if they do.
- You can now rob homes. The robberies will require skill and planning, however.
Or you can get an AK
- You can recruit gang members and use them to do four person drive-by’s.
Like hitman? **** yea!
Artificial Intelligence
- Your enemies will be smarter, which will make robbing houses take a lot of skill.
AKA get AK
Music
- There will be a rap station, but there will be a variety of other stations as always.
Wow I wouldn't of thought that.

You brought up Halo, on a GTA thread, when Halo hadn't been mentioned before. The above sounds like an attempt to compare, to me. The only reason you like Halo for the PC, is because it was a lot easier than the x-box, and that was the only way you could be good at it. You even bought it on the x-box, because you thought it was great, and then every time you were asked if you'd like to go play, you went once, and after getting your *** kicked, you decided never to play again.

DS
05-24-2004, 06:33 PM
First off, you brought up the numbers which we had previous talked about when we were discussing Halo 2. Therefore, you brought it up. Second, there is no attempt to compare anywhere in that post or any of them for that matter. I bought for Xbox in case I was to play multiplayer. I kicked your ass in the game every time besides that shotgun match. Either way I beat you. And on top of that, you would go play those things constantly and had a large advantage over me in the multiplayer. I don't know where you get off telling me how I felt about the game saying I loved it and that it was great. I never said any of those so stop assuming.

I didn't quit going because I lost to a couple guys that played daily since the game was released, I quit going because it bored the hell out of me.

If you're going to reply, which I have a feeling you will as you constantly want to get your point across, then just PM so it doesn't take up any more of this thread then it has.

Requiem
05-24-2004, 06:42 PM
I commented on the numbers, because you get way too into depth with them.
You just said that every single true thing posted, was not true. I've seen a trend with you lately. You lie about everything, including the smallest, stupidest things just so you can save face. It's -really- annoying. It's stupid to even try arguing against you, because if something is blatantly true, you'll say it's not if you don't like the previous answer.
Saying that you kicked my *** in every game, and then saying I play a lot, so have a huge advantage over you, is rediculous in itself. Especially after I talked to you a long time ago about you telling everyone else how awesome you were.

And hell, if you're going to say that me bringing up the numbers was a mention of halo in the first place, then my bringing up the numbers would mean that you were comparing halo to GTA when we talked about it as well, because you did.

GTA "Bomb Scare" Leads to Jail Time
Could this be the real danger of Rockstar's violent franchise?

May 26, 2004 - The Florida Union-Times today reported on one Grand Theft Auto player whose experience with the game led to fairly serious consequences.

Anthony S. Jones, a 27 year-old Jacksonville resident, was at home playing the game with a child he when called a co-worker at the Cross Creek Barbeque Restaurant. At one point, while on the call, he apparently told the child, "There's a bomb in the building. There's a bomb in the building. Everyone needs to get out!"

Jones has explained that he was referring to the game, but the words were taken very seriously by his co-worker, whose night manager notified police. The restaurant was evacuated and searched for explosives, though none were found.

On Monday Jones was arrested on charges of making a false report about a bomb or explosive, which counts as a second-degree felony, and carries a maximum penalty of up to 15 years jail time.

As of Tuesday, Jones is still in jail, held at $5,003 bail. His case is scheduled next month.

Please remember to practice safe gaming, kids: don't sit too close, take a break every half hour, and don't make false bomb threats in earshot of barbeque restaurants.

Ok a little update to get you pumped...I guess. Here's some confirmations from OPS2 UK.

The game will use a Dual-Layer DVD because Rockstar have already filled up a full DVD disk!
Carl Johnson can visit The Barber and get his hair cut into numerous different styles which the player can decide. Pedestrians and characters will make remarks on your hair, depending if it looks cool or un-cool.
There will be tumble-weed in the desert.
The only loading times in the game will be a short pause when you enter buildings!
Shadows can be used to hide yourself, to help pick off unsuspecting enemies.
Real sunlight is simulated, and shadows are placed where they would really be.
There are different sets of lighting for day and night which helps create a more realistic feel.
Weather effects have been added to.
There are various plants and places to see in the countryside, such as farms which keeps the game feeling alive.
Being a Gang Member only makes up about 15% of the total game.
Carl and the Orange Grove Families can take over areas and generate money from them. This is just one of the many things which can add to the replay value even after the game has been 'completed'.
If you drive a vehicle into the water, you have two choices, climb out of the window and swim to shore, or stay in the car and sink, where you will have a certain amount of underwater stamina.
Swimming will be involved in some missions.
There are parts of the game where you will work as a gang, and parts where you will work alone.
The game is now very non-linear, and depending what choices are made, it will be rare for 2 players to have the same type of game. The missions will be the same, but so much can change depending on choices you make.
There will be In-Breds and Degenerates in the Countryside and some missions will reflect the contrast between the towny and the country people.
The map is so big players will get lost frequently.
Characters have more bones which results in numerous different facial expressions.
There are now many more ways to complete missions. You could run straight in shooting, or sneak through the shadows and pick off the enemies one by one.
When the player only has one wanted star, hiding in the shadows should be enough to throw police off your trail.
The player must tap the X button on the bike in order to pedal faster.
You will have an accuracy meter at the top left of the screen, and the more enemies you hit, the better your accuracy will become.
The crosshairs which are aimed at people will change colour depending on how much health the enemy has. Green will symbolise almost full health, yellow represents half health, and red shows the character is almost dead.
There are Police Motorbikes and they will be used by the cops.
There are Quad Bikes to be ridden around the country side.
Some vehicles are made specifically for the countryside, while others are for the streets of the city.

I swear if this doesn't get this thread going, it's practically pointless until the game comes out.

DS
06-15-2004, 12:16 AM
Also, while I'm at it, there are two gangs as of now.

Orange Grove Families (Carl's gang)

They should do something to make it were the police go after other people for shooting guns, too, instead of the police only hating me. They should also make something like the "Most Wanted List", so after a while, as your "reputation" got higher, you would basically have one star at all times.

I remember there being "codes" to display your media level meter in VC but they didn't work... unless I was doing something wrong, I'll assume it was poppycock, but that's something I wouldn't mind seeing in San Andreas.

When you finally do get Busted or Wasted, rather than how they had various soundbites of Ken Rosenburg pleading your innonence in VC, they could have mock paper headlines or CNN coverage...

DS

The code worked on the PC version.

That one star all the time thing would suck.

Not when you first start out, but if you, say kill alot of people and don't get busted, cops would still act suspicious around you, even after you would technically have zero stars.

Couple new notes while I'm updating:

Cars accumulate dirt.
Tractors are confirmed.
Corrosion of cars.
Haircuts will be costing money in the game.
Advanced order placing for pizza will be present. You can order a small slice of pizza with a drink, up to a full rack with everything on it.
Each drive-by member will be able to select their own individual targets.
You chose if you're "good" or "evil".

Now, probably the worst news of the game (although I saw it coming), there will be NO multiplayer in San Andreas. They finish this and they're taking a break from GTA, probably (hopefully not) until the PS3.

The Lone Drinker

I am glad to see you have the choice of being good or evil because I rather not be the KKK's and Nazi's version of the stereotypical black man.

I'll be playing the part of a struggling black man trying to survive in a cruel and harsh white world.

[I am a white boy myself so me saying this is really funny.]

I think the game looks super cool. Although I really don't like the idea of breaking into people's houses. That's a little disturbing.

In games like GTA III, Vice City, Manhunt, The Suffering, etc.....I only killed bad guys.

And in the previous Grand Theft Auto games, I only stole cars from Mafia guys and other gang bangers.

At first I was thinking that I would have trouble relating to this homeboy in this game and won't feel too bad if he gets injured and/or killed. But I'll make him into a good guy now.

BTW: Does anyone know if there will be any Italian Gangster characters in the game?

I'm kind of worried that the wiseguys won't be in it because I have not heard much info on them in regards of the newest GTA.

I read on Frank Vincent's official website that he is returning to do the voice of Don Salvatore but that's it, and he may be the only Italian to show up and it could just be a brief cameo apperance.

I don't believe The Italians operate on the west coast, but maybe in Las Vegas. So come on, bring on the Mob.

Then again, they have been in every other game so perhaps the Grand Theft Auto people want try something new. But you can't have a Grand Theft Auto video game without "The Family". ;)

A thief burst into a Florida bank one day wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun. Aiming his gun at the guard, the thief yelled, "FREEZE, MOTHER-STICKERS, THIS IS A **** UP!" For a moment, everyone was silent. Then the snickers started. The security guard completely lost it and doubled over laughing.

It probably saved his life, because he'd been about to draw his gun. He couldn't have drawn and fired before the thief got him. The thief ran away and is still at large. In memory of the event, the banker later put a plaque on the wall engraved with the words, "Freeze, mother- stickers, this is a ****-up!"

Not much new news. The girl that turns on you at the beginning of GTA III might be back in this one. On the Liberty Tree website (the teaser site for GTA III) they say something about "Los something" and "San someone" or something close to that. So she might be back. And they might put up a teaser site for San Andreas at the beginning of July.

So I can't wait to break into houses and get attacked by a dog and blow away the dog and blast the owner....

Ah-hah! So that is why you were a jerk to me in response of my post up there.

At first, I wasn't sure what I said that offended you exactly. Me wanting the Italian Mafia in the game or me saying I was going to be a good guy instead of the KKK's version of the stereotypical black man like most of you are probably going to be.

I guess I hit a little to close to home since you are probably African-American yourself [or just a wannabe white boy who wishes he was black].....and you know I am telling the truth and that your whole ghetto macho way of life is trash.

Honestly, games like the newest GTA that is coming out this fall make the black man look very bad and it will only continue to hold the young black man back in getting equal rights.

The gangsta stuff is why most hillbillies hate blacks and why people with all the power want to keep black people down, because they all think they are dangerous thugs who want to break into their homes, rape their women, steal their cars, and kill them.

And of course any black man who is not a gang-banger is an Uncle Tom in the homeboy's eyes.

I have to serious wonder though if some of the hard-core GTA fans are sane people since they clearly enjoy killing innocent video game characters and committing violent crimes. Video game or not. I mean, what's next? Killing people for real? That seems to be the next step.

And anytime guys like me complain about it, we get hated on. I ain't no wussy. Your character can still be hard-core, sick, and violent in these video games without killing good characters.

Like I said, when I play games like The Suffering, Manhunt, and the GTA games.....all bad guys better beware.

That's just the point though. It's a videogame. This isn't real life we were discussing. Nobody goes out and beats old women and breaks into their house, that's the point of a videogame. It gives you the ability to do stuff you can't or shouldn't do in real life. People don't play Halo to fix the corrupt world after it was taken over by aliens. They play the game to beat the shit out the little fuckers.

Nobody is making fun of you because of the choice you decide to make in a game, that's why there is the ability to make such. You will still have to be "the stereotypical black" because you will still have to commit crimes and you will still have to murder people. Who cares what the graphic looks like, you're not commiting the crime. If you don't want to play the game like someone else, then fine. Just don't make a huge deal about it.
