I know theres like 6 of us that care, but Pens unveiled their Winter Classic jersey, hope they adopt it as the 3rd jersey, looks much better with less powder blue shit on it.

Maybe in Canada, casual hockey fans in the US wouldn't give a shit honestly. NBC gets a say in the teams, and they want the money and ratings from Sid/Ovie not 2 Canadians team no one in the US really care about. Not trying to be a dick, but it's the way it is.
Doesn't matter - the fact they gave the Pens another Winter Classic (2nd in 4 years) is a joke.
And I'm sure you'd be fine with it if it was a Pens/Hawks or the Hawks vs anyone.
El Fangel
10-29-2010, 12:46 AM
LoM, the problem with Sid/Ovy is that it isn't that exciting. They both get shutdown by the other team and basically you pay to see that and them being on the ice at the same time.
Not scoring a bunch of goals, as is what they are trying to see.
Toronto vs Montreal wouldn't be money?
Most if not all hockey fans in canada would watch, they would sell a metric fuckton of merchandise PLUS winter classic jerseys would sell astronomically.
Couple that with the fact that most americans bar Minnesota live less then 300 miles of the 49, I.e michigan, new York, boston, etc. And saying that Montreal/Toronto in the winter classic wouldn't make money is one of the dumbest things i have ever heard.
Emperor Smeat
10-29-2010, 01:14 AM
Its all about location with these Winter Classics since if the game is held in Canada, then a Montreal vs Toronto would make the most sense in terms of support and hype as was the case with the pre-Classics outdoor games.
Since NHL needs to rebound in popularity in the US especially with the non-hockey hotbeds, it makes more sense to market the Classic between US rivalries or "superstars" to generate the mega-hype.
No need to worry about Canada or hockey hotbeds since they will watch the game but the NHL needs the rest of the US to care about the game as a way to boost NHL's appeal.

Actually, I wouldn't. The Hawks had their Winter Classic (which I was at) and I want to see it spread around. Leafs, Habs, Rangers all deserve to host/play before they start to repeat teams (since the Bruins, Wings, and Hawks already played).
Shit... how about the Wild/Stars @ Target Field?

It's all about marketability, with this match up, Caps/Pens, you get a lot of the hype needed too generate a buzz. Not too mention, besides the game itself, ESPN is doing a 24/7 series too go along with the game. This would not be possible if not for the most recognizable faces south of the boarder were not playing in the game.
I would love too see other teams play in the game, however, with the state of the game in the south, I believe this is the best route too take.

NBC and the NHL want the game to get as high ratings as possible. Like him or not, Sid is the face of the NHL - especially to the unwashed masses and casual fans. It's simply smart business to use him as much as possible.

I thought it was HBO doing the 24/7 show. I know it was mentioned locally on the radio that the producers would be trying to get some of the guys to swear as much as possible.

So lets see, ignore people who know more then 2 players and understand the offside rule to make as much money as possible.
Seems about right.
Dialogue of people watching the game
"Hey who is that to the right of Ovechkin"
"Says here his name is Niklas Backstrom"
"Is he any good?"
"I dunno, never heard of him, so I dont think so"
Malkin Scores
"Hey that guy playing with Our Lord and Savior just scored"
"Says his name is Malkin, probably another shitty player using Sid The Kid to look better"

You and I are on the same wavelength here, FA. The biggest problem with the NHL right now is that they are trying to appeal to the casual fans that just don't give a shit and losing more and more die hard fans in the process. They are hyping up the Caps & Pens - both of which lost to the same #8 ranked Habs in last year's playoffs - yet the Habs are playing in the Heritage Classic (a game that most fans won't even be able to see outside of Canada).
And the idea for the Avs/Canes Winter Classic would be awesome.
And traditional hockey fans would watch the Wild/Stars play because they would understand the meaning behind a game like that. Will it happen? Of course not. But it would be awesome if they did. Especially if Modano was still in Dallas.

Regular season standings barely a mean a thing and it's proven time and time again.
You do well enough to get in, that's about it. The better teams will make it, cuz they can. But the seedings dont especially matter.

Would like to hear your opinions on this matter.
Fanns in Buffalo are angry with the Sabres start, and many are calling for Lindy Ruff to be fired.
I dont agree, Lindy is the longest tenured coach in the NHL by a long shot. 13 years. 4 Conference Title series and One NHL to his credit, never won it big though.
I dunno, they are playing like shit, but he is the jeff fisher of the NHL. I dont think it is Lindy that is the problem.

Fans in Buffalo are retards.
Its the same team that barely and I mean barely lost to the Bruins in the first round of the playoffs last year.
Its the same team that won 40+ games last year.
If a team that won that much last year and hasn't changed since last year. Its hardly the coachs fault. Buffalo isn't producing and they are without a certain backbone of the team.
Also going to say, Miller has been playing hurt from the start. Guy is REALLY off form from last year.

So how about the latest Hall of Fame inductions?
Can't go wrong with Dino Ciccarelli, but I think it's still too early to be inducting the ladies. This reeks of political correctness. I'm not saying the ladies shouldn't be in the hall...just not yet. Womens hockey has really only been on the international scope for the last 20 years or so. Most NHL'ers careers are longer than that if you include minors and juniors.
Women also don't have a professional league, so these inductees are based solely on international play. That wasn't enough to get Paul Henderson into the hall, so why is it enough for Cammi Granato and Angela James?
The hall should be about inducting the best of the best, not the best with breasts. Adam Oates, Mike Richter, Phil Housely all got passed over, and all had lengthier, more successful careers.
JimmyMess
11-09-2010, 11:17 AM
Your right it is mostly politics to start adding female hockey players. It comes with the times. And where we are, hockey is in dire need of more fans and exposure. Adding women to the hall garners media attention. However, they have to start somewhere, and these women are now pioneers.
And Paul Henderson only played 15 international games. One goal wouldn't be enough to put anyone in the Hall.
There are plenty of players who will go to the hall eventually, and Housley will maybe be one.

Pittsburgh's goaltending (and defensive) is awful. Not to mention that besides Crosby, they aren't scoring. Yet they're still only one game under .500 at the moment. The Pens need to get their shit in order, but they shouldn't be written off like some people seem to be writting them off.

Sabres take 5 out of 6 points in a 3 game trip. If Miller can ever get healthy they can start pushing their way back up.
And Thomas Vanek is killing me. I truly believe he can be a 50 goal scorer and dominate the league with his skill. But the dude needs to see a shrink. He is fucked between the ears right now.

Seems like yesterday all of Laughs Nation was bitching about JFJ when he got fired, then a fewish months later, the Laughs hired Burke, and suddenly everyone thought the Laughs would instantly become cup contenders...considering Burke "won" a cup in Anaheim by fluking his ass off from inheriting a great team, then raping the Oilers for Pronger...Take it from a Canucks fan, he's the biggest mouth and most overrated GM in the league. He talks the the talk, but walks like a 98 year old man in a wheelchair. Why? Price is fucking amazing. Price is a franchise goalie coming into his own. Kid is 23. Goalies dont reach their best days until usually around the age of 25. The guy is a stud. The Habs actually made the right choice in keeping him over Halak.

It seems like the Capitals finally got things going this month and are playing like last year now. Even with their "slow" start they now have 24 pts which is tops in the league and 58 goals scored is tops by 5 as well.
The move of Semin to the first line with Ovechkin and Backstrom might have had something to do with it. Semin is actually playing better than Ovie and thats real scary if he can stay healthy.

Halak is ripping it up in St Louis right now. Leading the league in shutouts, amoung the best in GAA and Save%. He's only 25 too. Price vs Halak is debatable, as right now Halak is far and away the better goalie. Price could very well be the next Patrick Roy....he could also be the next Kevin Weekes...
Regardless of who the Habs should have kept, one thing there is no argument against is that they should have got more for Halak. He carried them on his back through the playoffs, and all Gauthier was able to get was a couple of guys I can't even remember.

My main problem with Avery is, he actually has talent...
He's not a Datsyuk or Doan, but if he focused on his skills and not his mouth/being a dick all the time, he could be a 20-25 goal scorer/60-70 points. There is nothing wrong with getting under the skin of opposing players, cause them to take a shot at you, and giving your team a PP. If he wasn't such a douche, and turtled every time he's called on his shit. If he had even half a brain in that head of his, he could be a Esa Tikkanen type player.

I changed my views on the Kessel trade to be perfectly honest with you all.
In my opinion now, Burke made a smart move, he got Kessel for a couple of picks that were going to likely go to waste anyways.
Barring Schenn and the jury is out on Kadri the LAST player Toronto drafted and kept that was an impact player was Damphousse.
Not an excellent track record of excellent scouting given that a lot of first round picks become halfways good players at worst.
So basically he got a good player for two picks that with his scouting staff were huge gambles anyways.

The Kessel trade involved the Bruins getting Tyler Seguin as the #2 pick in the draft although only reason it was possible was the Maple Leafs being horrible last year.
If the Maple Leafs were better, Bruins don't get the chance to draft in the Top 2 and "steal" one of the 2 big names of the draft while Leafs would have won the trade deal. Seguin right now is averaging a point every 2 games.

When your one of two forwards on ice with talent, its pretty easy to be a point getter.

But look at Crosby a couple years ago - he was an assist-getter, but was more interested in dishing the puck than shooting it himself. The last two years he's figured out that if the Pens need him to put the biscuit in the basket, then it's ok to do exactly that.

I think Ovechkin and Stamkos would like to have a word with you on the matter.
Of course the best is a point of perspective in what a team needs and what you want each player to do.
Example, if Ovechkin was on Pitts and Crosby was on Washington, who do you think would do better?
On washington, Backstrom would be likely moved down, Semin would stay on Crosbys win and it wouldnt be much change.
On Pitts, Ovechkin would be on top line with Malkin and that, that would be fucking scary.

Are you crazy? If Crosby was on Washington it would be ridic. Malkin is overrated. Crosby plays with glorified 3rd liners and still is the best. Ovechkin plays with other superstars...

I strongly believe that the Caps, and mostly the top lines, are focusing on their defensive play. It has, and always will be their downfall come playoff time.

Malkin has really fallen off. His potential is still large, but as a superstar, no. Somethings different about him now, like he's lost 1/4 a step or a ton of confidence.

Leafs - Bruins game is pretty good. The Leafs are playing hard, 2-1 Bruins at present but that is because of Thomas being sharp and JS being caught back in his net twice.
Note - I'm not a Leafs fan (Pens fan since '88), but I'd like to see the Leafs win this game. Kessel (never liked him ever) needs to score in this game.

Mario Lemieux #2 to Wayne Gretzky overall.
Mario Lemieux I'd say is the most talented of all time. But here is the one statistc that separates the "Great One" from the rest
Three players have posted 100 assists in a season: Gretzky, Orr, Lemieux
Orr did it 1 time
Lemieux did it 1 time
Gretzky did it 11 times

Which should tell you about the support he had in the high flying 80s more than anything else.

Who had the most successful career: Wayne Gretzky
Who in my opinion is actually the most skilled of all time: Mario Lemieux

Not to discount, Kurri or Messier. But I would hands down take Jagr on my wing first.
Also, you take a look at the big 5, Gretzky, Howe, Richard, Orr and Lemeiux, you have the greatest forwards the game has ever seen, howevwr.
Howe and Richards were the 50-60's greatest
Orr took over in the early 70's
Gretzky owned the 80's
Lemieux, The 90's
Sadly, there isn't an apparent best for the 2000-2010 period. Arguably Crosby, Ovy for second half.
I think, in 10 years, you will see Crosby, Stamkos, Ovechkin, Malkin for 2010-2020

That statistic is insane. Gretzky made players, players didn't make Gretzky. Support is not what created this.
The only thing Gretzky had in defense of your argument was that he had an enforcer.
If Gretzky never had a goal in his career he is the number one point scorer of all time.

You know, I have to say that assisting on a goal by passing can be as hard as scoring.
Accurately passing to a moving teammate, banking off the boards, etc. Is something that takes a lot of skill.

By playing hockey three times a week, I'll tell you that yes, making an accurate pass is harder than it look, but it's much easier to get on the board for an assist. you can just be the guy who handed it to the player who then made the real play-making pass, and you still get a nod.
