Same reasons Steve Young (4) and Aaron Rodgers (3) staid for years as backups to great QBs. Only difference is Mallet waiting a few more years but he's another 1-2 years away from even being starter worthy.
Rodgers might have waited even longer if Farve didn't kept teasing retirement.
Matt Cassel was also 3 years but would have been longer if Brady didn't get hurt in 08.

The Brady deal saved the ravens almost a million this year if they use the exclusive tag since it dropped Brady out of the top 5 qbs. If either of the mannings, brees, Stafford or roethisberger restructure it would save them more.

Really hope the Falcons stay away from the free agent running backs this year. Jackson is intriguing, but I wonder about his age and Shonn Greene just doesn't do it for me. Plenty of breakout backs in the draft in my opinion.

Getting the first pick in the 2nd round for Smith is money for the 49ers. The beauty of the NFL draft is how deep it is and how first round talent goes beyond the first round sometimes, although the new rumor is that it puts the 9ers in prime position to put together a package for Revis or Harvin. Either way, they're in a damn good spot.

They didn't feed him the ball enough.. He had 100 less carries than the year before so his total yards fell off, but he only had one less TD..

3.6 ypc is a pretty big drop off no matter how many touches, plus throw in his huge contract, his age, Jacquizz Rogers and the "he's burnt out/done for" argument from the "experts", Falcons fans etc and that doesn't seem to equate to a guy that anybody should be too worried about releasing

Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens have agreed to a six-year contract worth $120.6 million that makes Flacco the highest paid player in NFL history, a source familar with deal told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
Also tops in terms of per year since its more than Brees average of about $20 million per year. In terms of jump, its also huge going from $6.7 million last year to now around $20.1 million next season.

Breakdown of Flacco's contract:
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/2268635/flaccodeal.jpg
He has about $30-$51 million as guaranteed money for the first two years while the rest of the guaranteed money is dependent on if he ever gets hurt (fully guaranteed) or not (none guaranteed).
Also the cap hit starts to get brutal after Year 3. Best chance for the Ravens to repeat is next year since its just an $6.8 million hit on the cap.

ON THE FALCONS BEAT
Keeping Ryan could cost nearly $140 million
Falcons are preparing to retain their franchise quarterback
By D. Orlando Ledbetter
FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons owner Arthur Blank has walked down this gilded path before.
Back in 2004, he made Michael Vick the highest-paid player in the league with a 10-year $130 million contract.
Nine years later, the Falcons have closely monitored how Joe Flacco’s contract situation has played out in Baltimore.
Flacco, a quarterback from Delaware who was selected 15 picks after Matt Ryan in the 2008 draft, became the NFL’s highest paid player on Monday when he signed a six-year $120.6 million contract. A total of $52 million is guaranteed, the second-highest guarantee of any quarterback in history.
Ryan is set to enter the final year of the six-year, $72 million contract he signed in May of 2008. He had $34.75 million of his original contract guaranteed.
“It’s yet another comparable and data point for Matt Ryan,” said Andrew Brandt, ESPN’s NFL business analyst and former chief negotiator for the Green Bay Packers. “The gold standard was Drew Brees, at least on the average at $20 million (per season). Now, you have $20.1 million. It’s certainly a place they could look at as the freshest data point.”
When the time is right, Ryan appears set to join Flacco in the $100 million club.
“He should average at least $21 million, $22 million or $23 million,” said Joel Corry, a former sports agent who covers football business for the nationalfootballpost.com.
Under Corry’s forecast, a six-year deal for Ryan would fall somewhere between $126 million and $138 million with more that $60 million of it guaranteed.
Corry noted that Ryan is represented by Tom Condon of Creative Artists Agency. Condon also represents several of the league’s top quarterbacks including Peyton and Eli Manning, Matthew Stafford, Drew Brees, Robert Griffin III and Philip Rivers.
“The guaranteed money and what your first three years of compensation (is) the most important issue,” said Corry, who received his bachelor’s degree in finance from Emory. “I expect Matt Ryan to exceed $60 million in guarantees. He’s probably going to be at $65 million-plus over the first three years. That wouldn’t surprise me.”
The Falcons are trying to figure out how best to handle Ryan’s contract and craft his salary cap numbers in a way that will allow for the team to take on younger talent and remain highly competitive.
There is no internal debate about Ryan’s worth to the franchise.
“He’s our franchise guy that we’re very proud of, on and off the field,” Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said. “Matt’s what we’ve been looking for in a quarterback.”
Head coach Mike Smith is also a staunch supporter.
“With quarterbacks, there are a couple of things that they are judged by and one is winning games,” Smith said. “Matt has done an outstanding job for us throughout his entire five years.”
Ryan and Flacco are inexorably linked. In addition to being selected in the same draft, they both started off as rookies who guided their teams to the playoffs.
Ryan has a 56-22 regular-season record. He’s led the Falcons to the playoffs in four of his five seasons and has won two NFC South titles. However, he’s 1-4 in the playoffs.
Flacco, with a much better defense, has enjoyed greater success in the postseason, leading the Ravens to the Super Bowl title in February.
Flacco has a 54-26 regular-season record. He’s taken the Ravens to the playoffs in each of the five past seasons and has a 9-4 postseason record.
Because of Ryan and Flacco’s early success, teams are starting to play quarterbacks earlier in their careers instead of letting them serve an apprenticeship on the sidelines with a clipboard.
The Falcons don’t comment about specific player negotiations, but have acknowledged that they plan to retain Ryan’s services.
“Every team is different, but if you’ve got a marquee quarterback, (a big contract) comes with the territory,” Corry said. “It seems like if you don’t have a marquee quarterback, you’re not going to win a Super Bowl or be in position to win one anyway. So, it’s kind of a nice problem to have to a degree.”

9-4 in the playoffs with a team that's NEVER been the #1 seed in the playoffs vs 1-4 with a team that was a #1 seed twice. Hey, his stats are great though..actually..over 5 years Ryan has only thrown for 1300 more yards and 25 tds than Flacco while throwing 4 more ints. So Ryan only avgs about 260 yards and 5 tds more a year than Flacco..big deal

The offer is classified as "good" in terms of compensation coming the Jets' way and the financial terms that would be extended to Revis. However, that financial package has yet to be shared with Revis and his representatives due to GM John Idzik not giving Revis' camp permission to discuss a new contract with other teams. The Falcons, Broncos, and 49ers have recently denied interest in Revis, but a rumor of Eagles GM Howie Roseman "crunching numbers" and "putting together an offer" for Revis surfaced on Sunday.

Tony Gonzalez announces he's postponing retirement for at least one year and will play next season for the Falcons.
Also its been reported that the Bucs have made a potentially better offer for Revis than what the Eagles offered on Sunday.
Citing a source with knowledge of the situation, Profootballtalk.com reports the Buccaneers are Darrelle Revis' likely landing spot if the Jets agree to terms on draft-pick compensation.
New York received what was classified as a "good" trade offer for Revis on Monday, and now Tampa Bay has been revealed as the team that offered it. PFT's Mike Florio believes the package will be headlined by a 2013 second-round pick or a future first-round selection due to the fact Revis is still in rehab mode from a torn ACL. The Jets are "poised" to act quickly on Revis, so this may be their opportunity to pull the trigger.

Love the signing, but I wanna see the Broncos get a DB.
You're going to get Knighton dude.
Ok, you did get Knighton.
Until it gets cold and peryton seizes up again and can't throw the ball to any f them
likely to happen given how much Peyton struggled during the wint...oh wait

dunno, didn't he lose out to Nick Folk last year
I still trust him more than Tynes. Tynes just never seemed to have all that strong of a leg. Felt nervous if he came in for any attempt over 40.
Also they have David Buehler who Jerry Jones had a hard-on for for years for some reason. Not likely he beats out Brown in preseason, but I suppose it's possible.

Decker, Thomas, and now Welker.
That's one lethal Wide Reciver corps. Manning got to work with.
IN YO' FACE, MCDEVIL!

Fuck you Welker. You never won a ring anyways.

One catch would have given him that ring and he missed it. I doubt it.

Pretty sure we know who Brady's new favorite target will be.

All depends on how Gronk is for next season considering Welker was originally planned to have less of a role last season before Gronk (and Hernandez) got hurt.
If the TEs can stay healthy then Amendola youth and speed will make up for the loss of Welker's experience. Also gives Amendola time to get used to the new system and become their next "Welker" type player.

For more money than they offered Weller. That's funny

Good Riddance Wes Welker. He's the Peyton Manning of Wide Receivers.
And Droford, you can rationalize this as much as you'd like. The Ravens are getting rid of them contracts to afford Flacco. Say Hello to Third (and Maybe 4th) place in the AFC North.
Dear God, since I'm on a roll, please let Cincy win the AFC North, with Cleveland finishing second, so Pittsburgh and Baltimore can look up and see what the 90's felt like to us.

Ravens are still going to win the division.

Ed reed is supposedly pulling a lebron James TV special on where he's going. As long as its not Pittsburgh or new England I don't really care. Probably could be Indy.

lol He's not coming to the Steelers. Biggest signee we have so far is like Bruce Gradkowski. Yeah. Steelers really don't do Free Agency for some reason. Never have.
Browns are picking up some nice pieces so far. They will be most improved for sure next year.

Steelers don't need him, they have their own washed up fs
only a 1 yr deal as well, that could work out great for both sides

Again I ask, who the fuck is Geno Hayes? I mean yes it makes sense for the Jags to sign him because nobody knows who the hell he is, but come on.
