I'm not sold on Freeman either, and the Panthers have a new GM and are still in the midst of a rebuild. I won't put either team as low as a team like the Raiders or Browns, but I'm not really confident either team will make the playoffs.
I do think the Falcons and Saints will both make it, though. Saints have defensive issues but seem to be flying under the radar. Payton being back will make a big difference.

I think the Falcons are legit but in all honesty this should be the Saints' division to lose. Payton/Brees are IMO the best coach/QB combo going right now in the league.
(Rodgers is better QB but Payton is waayyyyyyyy above McCarthy's level)

The Falcons seem to have a scary amount of depth. I know it's fun to joke about their playoff blunders, but the Ryan/Smith era got off the schnide with a playoff win last year and still came really close to making it to the Super Bowl.
Early prediction (and really, in the NFL any prediction this far out is a total crapshoot) is the Broncos over the Falcons in the SB. Falcons and Niners hook up in the NFC Title game again, this time in SF, and the Falcons return the favor from a year ago. Peyton wins his 2nd ring which finally silences his critics who have ripped him for his numerous one and dones over the year.
Evil Vito

Still would love to see a Manning Super Bowl. :o I know the media attention would nauseate everybody outside of NY and Denver, but dammit I'd love it. 2nd battle of the brothers year in a row, just in a different way.
Optimism aside, the NFC East is way too close of a race for me to comfortably pick a division winner, nevermind actually making it to the SB.

Chiefs have legit talent on their team. For all Andy Reid's faults and follies, he is a significant upgrade at coach for them. That division (sans Broncos) is wide open. If they can split with the horsies and take care of business they can feasibly be 5-1 in the division, setting them up for at least discussion in the wildcard spot. I could see the Chiefs making noise this year.

As a 9ers fan, I really hope Alex does well on the Chiefs. We put him in so many shitty situations over the years, including last year. He's a much better QB than he was ever able to show on the 9ers, IMO. Last year he was showing how brilliant he could be and then Kaepernick happened.

Alex Smith got the Jason Campbell treatment, and I don't know if he'll really be able to elevate himself to anything other than above-average with a "QB guru" like Harbaugh around him. And, all the praise I just gave to the Chiefs, going from an organization like the 49ers to the Chiefs, not exactly an upgrade.

I read about that a week ago. It probably won't get as much exposure b/c Hugh Douglas is washed up and no one watches Numbers Never Lie. The only reason the Riley Cooper story got so big because 1: Slow news week aside from A-Rod and 2: dude is an active player in a league that's 70% black threatening to fight "niggers".
That being said, I'm personally very interested in seeing how ESPN responds to this. They have a precedent for not taking this stuff to lightly considering the way they've handled Rob Parker and Rush Limbaugh. To be fair to ESPN, they didn't really make a big deal out of those firings either. In general they handle internal matters, well... internally.

Belichick has kept a 3rd QB several times during the Brady era although usually end up getting traded or dropped mid-way in the season.
Think in Tebow's case, he has a strong chance of lasting for most if not all of this year. Belichick won't just dump him for nothing and it gives some insurance for Mallet who isn't quite ready to be a true backup (or starter).
If Belichick fails in improving Tebow, probably safe to say that Tebow's NFL career is done unless the Jags suddenly were interested in him again.

Only have a couple weeks to figure out what kind of FINANCIAL WAGERS I would like to make on this NFL season.
Thinking of making a few futures bets (season o/u wins) as well as division/SB bets depending on what I see. Right now San Fran (+487), Denver (+554), and Seattle (+684) have the best odds to win the SB (according to the lines anyway). New England is next at +818 which I'm kind of surprised at. Probably because they've basically already clinched a division title/playoff spot. Jacksonville (lol) is +40416, meaning a $20 bet on them to win the SB pays out a decent $8083.20. Will probably do a medium pick like Green Bay (+1401) or something or just stay away altogether.
Haven't looked at the futures lines yet.

Von Miller is facing a six-game suspension for violation of the league's substance policy, according to league sources, but the sides still are negotiating as representatives of the Denver Broncos linebacker are trying to get the ban reduced to four games.
The announcement is expected this week, and could come as early as Monday.
In the test that triggered the suspension, multiple sources say Miller was flagged for a "diluted sample." It happened after Miller was asked to provide a test before an offseason workout/practice and the sample was spilled, by Miller, before it was given to the collector. Miller was then asked at that time to provide another sample and he could not.
He then participated in the workout, drinking fluids throughout the activity. Miller then provided a sample that was used in the test following the workout.

It appears as though Luke McCown has won the backup quarterback job for the New Orleans Saints.
The team released veteran Seneca Wallace on Monday, according to Adam Schefter.
The two were brought in to compete for the backup job behind Drew Brees after Chase Daniel left as a free agent. But the competition never really materialized.
Wallace missed a chunk of training camp with a groin injury and sat out the preseason opener. McCown shined well getting extended play in the first preseason game.
Wallace made his debut last week against Oakland things didn’t go well. The Saints turned the ball over on all three of the possessions he was on the field for.

Von Miller is having a really bad week
Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller could be called as a witness in the death penalty murder case against Dexter Lewis, accused of stabbing five people to death in a Denver bar in October.
Miller's name is among more than 100 potential witnesses in the case. He is listed as a possible acquaintance of Lewis, but there is no indication Miller had ever met or knew anyone in the case.
Prosecutors last week filed a list of potential witnesses who may be called during the sentencing phase of the trial.
"We've been aware that Von's name appears on a potential witness list, but he has zero direct involvement in this case," said Patrick Smyth, Broncos executive director of media relations.
During the investigation, Miller's name was brought up and investigators followed through with an interview, said Lynn Kimbrough, spokeswoman for the Denver district attorney's office.
"All of the work that is done during an investigation is documented, and that includes any interviews that are done regardless of any real impact on an investigation," Kimbrough said. "In a criminal case, there may be any number of people on a witness list that may never be called, but their names were included as documentation as part of the investigation."
Lewis faces 16 counts in the attack at Fero's Bar and Grill. The charges include multiple counts of first-degree murder, felony murder, robbery and arson. Prosecutors announced that they are seeking the death penalty against Lewis.

I think this AJ Jenkins/Jon Baldwin trade could be pretty solid for both parties involved. 9ers are getting really unlucky this season at WR and need a guy that can come in and make a difference quick and the Chiefs need a young hungry WR that they can cultivate into a star their way.

I'm actually fairly nervous about this season. We aren't under the radar anymore (we weren't last year really but there was always a chance that the season before was a fluke) and every team wants to be the team to beat the 9ers. We have a bunch of early injuries and our schedule is probably a bit harder than last year. Not to mention the Seahawks are being assholes.

You guys have also felt the wrath of being a good team and loosing players in FA
I'm pretty nervous too, but I like that NO ONE is talking about the Saints. Not as a contender or even as a sleeper. If Ryan can improve the defense and get them up in the mid teens for overall D, Saints will def be in the playoffs. Defense has looked good through camp and even has 11 sacks and numerous more hurries of the QB in the first 2 preseason games. The NFC is stacked now a days and now I know how fans of AFC teams felt in the 2000's.
Schedule is pretty rough this year though.

Yeah, we lost a couple of players but we also gained a couple of players. Dashon Goldson was a huge loss. People sometimes forget that we recently picked up Nnamdi though. Not to mention that Parys Haralspn didnt even play last year. And Crabtree being out hurts a whole lot but Anquan Bolden is there to pick up that slack, we just traded for Jon Baldwin, and Vernon Davis can handle much more of a pass load than he got last year. We are still in fairly good shape, despite all of the hardships we've suffered in offseason/preseason.

Who predicted a Super Bowl with Tebow? I'm pretty sure we all knew what was coming when they played the Pats considering the same thing had just happened like 6 weeks earlier when people weren't 100% sure what was coming.
Miller and Dumerville don't really worry me though. Miller will be back after 6 games (Ravens, Giants, Raiders, Eagles, Cowboys, Jaguars aren't exactly murderers row) and Elvis can be replaced. What bothers me is that the Broncos have never really done well as the center of attention aside from Elway's final season. It seems like anytime they get a lot of publicity and are the favorites they choke it away somehow. Maybe this season will be different, but I have always hated seeing people talk highly of the Broncos as they seem to underachieve.

My friend drafted right behind me so I figured the pick would define both of our seasons. Went Martin, but then he took Charles instead.
But before his second pick, my friend got logged out and it took James Laurinaitis. He got back on in time to take AJ Green and Frank Gore. Then it logged him out again and it took like 4 defensive players in a row. Never seen Yahoo fuck somebody over like that in a conventional draft. He had no pre-draft rankings. It was supposed to just take the highest player available to fill out open spots on his roster and instead it filled out all of his IDP spots, including a few bench spots. :o

He might have a good chance of staying or become their starter considering both E.J. Manuel (knee) and Kevin Kolb (concussion) are currently hurt.
Bills want Manuel as the season starter but need him to start practicing before Week 1 while the Bills are worried Kolb's recent concussion has the strong chance of being a career ender.
Hanso Amore

Could care less about kolb would rather have Leinart than him and that's saying something.
Manuel is still on for week one. Kolbs career is over and Manuel wins the job by default, even though he would have anyways. He has looked good.
They only signed Leinart because they need bodies for the last preseason game, and their only healthy qb for that game and practice is Jeff Tuel.
They also added Thaddeus Lewis for another arm at practice.

Some people already have Madden. So far I've heard that the losing team gets the huge celebration after the Super Bowl, changing your defensive schemes doesn't actually work (if you change from a base 3-4 to 4-3 and change player positions accordingly, the player ratings will still reflect 3-4 making the feature useless), and even if you relocate your team, you'll still see the old city name all over the place.
Passing on this one unless there's a big patch. I'm still happy with Madden 12. I've played it long enough where Eli has now retired and I have a rookie QB.
DaveBrawl
08-26-2013, 10:45 AM
There will be a patch, they probably just haven't released it yet since you aren't supposed to have it before tomorrow. I haven't played more than a couple games in any Madden since like 07 or 08 on PS2 I always end up bored of it after a couple games, but my brother gets it most years and last year I remember him complaining about not being able to change player positions and some other features that you had been able to do for years and they eventually patched it up (not day 1 though). So they always make mistakes like this, but at least they are pretty good about fixing them.
Evil Vito
08-26-2013, 10:57 AM
Last year was ridiculous. They took away editing positions, numbers, info, etc. even though those were features that had always been in Madden. It wasn't a glitch. They did it because they felt that being able to edit your players would ruin the point of the new Connected Careers mode. They only added it back in after everybody was upset about it.
In the past few years there appear to have been a LOT of glitches in these Madden games. I don't think they even do any quality tests before releasing it. Why bother when you can have people pay $60 to test the game for you? If they had 2 years to make a game they'd have time to iron everything out, but at this point they're expected to churn out a new game each year.
Exclusivity licenses need to end. I want my EA MVP Baseball and NFL 2k series back. :(
DaveBrawl
08-26-2013, 11:12 AM
Is that why they did it? I figured they had a reason, but I don't think I even played last years version at all so I didn't know what it was.
I still have 2k5 laying around, been thinking about loading it back up when the roster update site I've seen gets around to updating week 1 rosters. It's been so long since I've played it, I wonder how it's aged.
Used to love making Koy Detmer league MVP. The AI had so much trouble picking him off. His arm strength rating was so low they would mistime their int attempt and jump before the ball even got close to them and leave my receiver wide open for an easy first down so often.

Have you never played any game ever before, patches happen all the time. 90% of minor problems will be fixed within a month of game being released (which, for the record, isn't actually until tomorrow anyway)

Used to love making Koy Detmer league MVP. The AI had so much trouble picking him off. His arm strength rating was so low they would mistime their int attempt and jump before the ball even got close to them and leave my receiver wide open for an easy first down so often.
Funniest actual thing ever lol
Worst is people who cheesed the game by putting Randy Moss on punt returns (99 or 100 SPD stat, I forget which) because you basically could just run sideline-to-sideline to get the AI way out of position then get a return essentially 100% of the time if they kicked to you at all.

Pretty sure it took them until early 2013 to patch last year's game. Anyway my issue isn't that there are glitches so much as it is the nature of the glitches. I mean, how do you release a game in which the team that loses the Super Bowl celebrates? They've gotten the Super Bowl celebration right for like 20 years.

That sounds more egregious than it really is, in my opinion. More of a thing that you'd have a laugh about with your friends when it happens. But I guess there are people out there in their dynasty modes or w/e who would get pissed off about that. But it seems like a simple coding fix anyway that will probably be released in the first patch I'd imagine.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending EA or anything because I hate them and wish their games all would fail, but most common glitches are generally fixed. Or lazily coded around. Remember the "fatigue" issue in like '03? Their solution: fatigue was turned off for online play, instead of fixing the exploit that was causing it. IN THEIR DEFENSE, that was probably a time/money constrain issue and they created a quick simple fix. In subsequent Madden releases they simply have no fatigue for online play. Minor gripe, but for players who want to play a physical run game they are at a disadvantage. etc etc

Anyway since I've been gaylording this thread up with Madden/fantasy talk, I guess I will add some "real football" talk to the mix.
Anyone else think the Chiefs are going to fall flat this year? They seem to be the big "hyped" team right now. Shitty record last year, new coach, lots of talent on the roster, new QB, shitty division. Every "pundit" is basically predicting them to go 11-5 and gain a wildcard spot. Think we should pump the brakes on them a bit. Would be hilar to see them go 6-10 after Charles inevitably gets banged up after becoming a 300-carry back, Alex Smith continues to be Alex Smith, and Reid costs the Chiefs 3 games with horrible clock management and challenge flag usage.

It was like late September. Drama Queen.
If the Gameplay is better, which it has been every year running, its going to be fine. I could care less if a relocated team name is glitched. If that is what causes you NOT to buy a FOOTBALL game, I dunno, you probably shouldnt play anything.

Who all is getting Madden 25? Anyone interested in doing a Connected Franchise mode together? We each control a team and basically run it, play the games etc. Would be kinda hot. I've done it a bunch in the NHL games, I imagine it's mad fun in football as well.

11 or 10 wins seems a bit high but them contending for a Wild Card spot sounds about right.
Outside of the first month, their schedule is pretty soft but could see them fall flat if either the Chargers end end up being better than in recent years or they get too caught up in the hype if they start out strong.

Same leg he broke last year, too. Happened near the end of the first half when he was likely going to be pulled.
Only possible silver lining is that he walked the injury off. Maybe it's not a severe break. Possible candidate for the temporary IR spot.

That's what I've been reading, too.
Another teensy silver lining in the grand scheme of it all is that they'll get a good long hard look at Wilson to see if he can be "the guy". It'll pretty much be the first time the G-Men have had a 3-down back since, shit, Tiki?

Gonna do my way too early roster prediction. Did this last year and wound up way off. Of course this also assumes they don't get any injuries in preseason which is unrealistic, but whatever:
QB (3): Eli Manning, David Carr, Ryan Nassib
RB (4): David Wilson, Andre Brown, Ryan Torain, Michael Cox
FB (1): Henry Hynoski
WR (5): Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz, Rueben Randle, Louis Murphy, Jerrel Jenigan
TE (3): Brandon Myers, Adrien Robinson, Bear Pascoe
OL (9): Will Beatty, Kevin Boothe, David Baas, Chris Snee, David Diehl, Justin Pugh, Jim Cordle, James Brewer, Brandon Mosley
DE (5): Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck, Mathias Kiwanuka, Damontre Moore, Adrian Tracy
DT (5): Linval Joseph, Cullen Jenkins, Johnathan Hankins, Mike Patterson, Marvin Austin
LB (6): Keith Rivers, Dan Connor, Jacquain Williams, Spencer Paysinger, Mark Herzlich, Aaron Curry
CB (5): Prince Amukamara, Corey Webster, Jayron Hosley, Aaron Ross, Terrell Thomas
S (4): Antrel Rolle, Stevie Brown, Ryan Mundy, Cooper Taylor
K (1): Josh Brown
P (1): Steve Weatherford
LS (1): Zak DeOssie
Feels weird only keeping 5 wideouts but I had to make a sacrifice somewhere since the Giants will most likely be carrying a 3rd QB for the first time in several years. They're not cutting Nassib after they traded to early in the 1st round to get him, but I have a hard time seeing them getting rid of Carr and putting the entire season on Nassib's shoulders if Eli gets hurt.
I wanted to find room for an extra LB (Etienne Sabino) and an extra CB (Junior Mertile) but I ran out of space since the Giants have a shitload of depth at the D-line and I think they'd like to keep as many as they possibly can. Marvin Austin's inclusion is probably the biggest head scratcher but I can't remember Jerry Reese ever cutting somebody he drafted in the first three rounds without giving him at least three years to prove himself. Hopefully Sabino and Mertile make it to the practice squad.
Well official cuts aren't due in until tomorrow but it looks like my final prediction isn't going to be totally off.
I'm thinking the Giants might keep 5 RBs now that Andre Brown is supposedly only going to miss a month. Brown is important enough where I think they'll try to avoid using the temporary IR spot and losing him for longer than they have to. Da'Rel Scott makes the team. To make up his spot, Adrien Robinson goes on the temporary IR and the Giants go with only 2 TEs.
Adrian Tracy misses out because there's just no way I can't put Shaun Rogers on the team, the big guy was great all preseason. 6 DTs seems like a bit much but Cullen Jenkins can shift to DE if need be.
Obv missed with the Aaron Curry pick. Kyle Bosworth gets his spot.
And with Stevie Brown's unfortunate injury, Tyler Sash seals up a spot. Could maybe see Cooper Taylor getting bumped but I dunno if David Caldwell has done enough to earn a spot.

Probably the biggest sign that he was getting cut was when Belichick refused to put him in during the Lions game which they lost 40-9.
Also the Pats keeping Gronk on the active roster and not the PUP/IR roster meant 1 less roster spot possible for Tebow.
