NFL trying to get plans for an 18-game season to be approved and done before either Super Bowl L or LI.

"I hear from fans consistently that they want to make every NFL event more valuable. They see the preseason as being less valuable to them because they don't see the best players and the games do not count," he said. "We have to address that, whether we are looking at 18 [regular-season games] and two [preseason games] or 16-and-two and expanded playoffs."

It wouldn't be two more games. It would just be changing two of the preseason games into regular season games. The only difference in player safety is that injuries are more likely to be starters and not 3rd stringers.

Rob Ryan, New Orleans Saints looking for vindication

Associated PressPublished:█May 23, 2013 at 07:57 p.m.Updated:█May 23, 2013 at 08:26 p.m.NEW ORLEANS -- Rob Ryan figures his firing in Dallas only will help him relate to a█New Orleans Saints█defense humbled by a historically bad season."I don't like getting fired," Ryan said Thursday during his first meeting with reporters since coach█Sean Payton█hired him in February to revamp New Orleans' last-ranked defense. "I know I got my feelings hurt and so did our players. We're looking to do something about it."The█Saints█gave up 7,042 yards in 2012, the most in a single season in the NFL. Payton has said that performance forced him to make a change at defensive coordinator, even though he felt bad letting█Steve Spagnuolo█go after only one highly unusual season. Spagnuolo never coached with Payton, who was suspended all of last season in connection with the NFL's bounty probe of the█Saints.Ryan has been known to exhibit a brash demeanor more akin to that of█Gregg Williams, the█Saints' defensive coordinator from 2009 to 2011. Williams often referred to himself as a disciple of retired coach Buddy Ryan, Rob Ryan's dad.Ryan has studied some of the schemes the█Saints█executed well under Williams and brought some of them back. His approach fosters toughness, safety█Malcolm Jenkins█said, and that is something█Saints█players embrace, even as they are mindful of the scrutiny they faced from the league in the past."There's a line and you don't cross it, but you want to get as close to that line as you can," Jenkins said. "We definitely want to be a physical, feared defense."If successful, Ryan could for the first time serve as a defensive coordinator on a winning team, something he never did while holding that post in Cleveland, Oakland and Dallas. He won a█Super Bowl█as a defensive assistant for the█New England Patriots."I just feel like a sense of urgency," Ryan said. "I can't wait to give everything I have to this organization. I know everybody is on the same path."Copyright 2013 by The Associated Press

It's not as bad as I thought it'd be. They are actually showing a lot of respect to pre-Super Bowl era coaches. Vince Lombardi will be #1 though. The countdown is because it is Lombardi's 100th birthday. I'm torn on Lombardi being #1 because I think he is insanely overrated, but he has god-like status for a reason in football. Anybody could be deemed overrated when they are put on top of Mount Olympus like Vince Lombardi is.

Halas, Shula, Walsh, Lombardi, and Noll are the names. Order to be announced.

While he only won 2 Super Bowls, Don Shula's ability to consistently win across such different eras of the game is most impressive. 4 decades of consistent success.

Surprised they put Sid Gillman at 18 and not a lot higher considering his coaching tree alone is considered the greatest. Its also a bit bigger than what Wikipedia has for a diagram since a few more coaches and coaching trees can be connected to it (ex. Marty Schottenheimer).

Baring an injury to Brady, probably the same amount as what Brady's backups averaged mainly from whatever games turned into blowouts.

nothing like a bit of blind optimism

They were 17th in defense last year with quite frankly a bunch of old beat up players and missing key injured playrs..just the presence of a fully healthy Suggs and Elvis Dumervil should be enough to improve over a measly 37 sacks last year..but they're also getting back Ledarius Webb who was their best cb before tearing his acl week 6, to go with Micheal Huff and rookie Matt Elam in the secondary. Then you have the additions of Canti and Spears as well, both are solid defensive players. They traded up to get Arthur Brown in the draft, who will be a solid sub by the end of the year and starter in the future..and I'm sure more of Courtney Upshaw will be a good thing.

If they aren't ranked as one of the top 5 defenses at the end of the year, I'll be shocked.

CSL
06-12-2013, 08:07 PM
not buying a bunch of average players, a rookie and Elvis Dumervil replacing the players that left at all. They way you lay it out is pretty much "ultimate best case scenario". And Suggs was back like what, 4-5 games into the season? That's a straight up weaker defense buddy

Droford
06-12-2013, 08:14 PM
Suggs played but not at the level anyone would expect from him if he hadn't injured his achilles. I expect 30 sacks between him and Dumervil, which is almost as many as the team had as a whole last year. Getting qb pressure will set the rest of the defense up for more success.

As for the players that left, ed reed was banged up and could not tackle properly because of his shoulder. They might miss Pollard but he had a penchant for getting beat too often to make up for his big hits. Dumervil is miles better than Paul Kruger and his crazy contract..biggest loss was ellerbe, he had a lot of potential but his asking price was too much for that potential and they've let better players walk on defense before without missing much of a beat..

CSL
06-12-2013, 08:22 PM

Droford
06-12-2013, 08:27 PM

Welker has never won a title in the first place and the Pats last Super Bowl loss was partially blamed on him dropping the ball at the end, so the joke was with both of them on the same team how can we lose.

That stuff totally won't happen this year though. Championship.

lol so apparently Vladimir Putin has a Super Bowl ring

The Super Bowl ring is one of the greatest symbols of athletic triumph.

NFL players have been known to break down when they can finally fit that particular bit of jewelry on their fingers, and I've met enough former players, coaches, and executives who would never be separated from their rings to know that the buzz lasts forever.
New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has three such rings from his team's wins in 2001, 2003 and 2004. The ring Kraft won for that last Super Bowl, at the end of the 2004 season, went missing in a very unusual way.

As the story goes, Kraft met Russian President Vladimir Putin at a gathering of business and political leaders at Konstantinovsky Palace near St Petersburg, Russia, in June of 2005. Kraft and Putin talked a while, Kraft took off his ring to show it to Putin, and Putin promptly put the ring in his pocket and walked off.

"I showed the president my most recent Super Bowl ring," Kraft said in a subsequent statement. Putin "was clearly taken with its uniqueness."
"At that point, I decided to give him the ring as a symbol of the respect and admiration that I have for the Russian people and the leadership of President Putin."

But as Kraft said recently, per the New York Post, that's not what really happened.

"I took out the ring and showed it to [Putin], and he put it on and he goes, 'I can kill someone with this ring,'" Kraft said during the Carnegie Hall's Medal of Excellence gala in New York City. "I put my hand out, and he put it in his pocket, and three KGB guys got around him and walked out."
Were it not for the intervention of the White House, this could have gotten ugly. Kraft wanted his ring back, obviously not intimidated by Putin's alleged ability to kill somebody with it. The ring came in at 4.94 carats and was worth over $25,000 (£16,000), and Kraft was not amused. He said that he got a call from the George W. Bush-led White House, telling him that it would really be in the best interests of relations between the two countries if Kraft would change the story and say the ring was a gift.
Kraft, though, was unmoved.

“I really didn’t [want to]. I had an emotional tie to the ring, it has my name on it. I don’t want to see it on eBay. There was a pause on the other end of the line, and the voice repeated, ‘It would really be in the best interest if you meant to give the ring as a present.’”
According to the Post, the ring is now kept in the Kremlin library - presumably in the "Ill-Gotten Booty" section.

Seems like he flat out just hated the guy recently and thought it was better to get rid of him than deal with any future problems. Can't be anything related to Lloyd dating Hernandez's girlfriend sister since it seems like Hernandez didn't care nor any known domestic violence.

He also told someone in the house that he was upset and couldn’t trust anyone anymore, the prosecutor said.

After picking up Lloyd, Hernandez said he was upset with Lloyd because Lloyd had spoken with people Hernandez had trouble with during their outing to the nightclub, McCauley said.

After that conversation, Lloyd texted his sister, “Did you see who I am with,” the prosecutor said. When his asked who, he answered at 3:22 a.m., “NFL,” then, a minute later, “Just so you know,” he said.

this post is really good:

"Full account of the evidence against Hernandez."

http://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/1h6euh/full_account_of_the_evidence_against_hernandez/

All of this was from his arraignment yesterday.

The charges:

Murder
Carrying a firearm without a license
Possession of a large capacity firearm x2
Possession of a firearm without and FID card x2
The evidence:

Victim found 1/2 mile from Hernandez's home w/ numerous gunshot wounds
5 .45 caliber shells found at the scene, fired from a semi-auto weapon, based on the locations and distance between them.
Victim was not robbed, had wallet, keys and phone.
Keys were to a rental car, registered to Hernandez.
Phone contained text messages between the victim and Hernandez, within hours of the murder.
Victim's sister said her brother left at 2:30 AM in a silver Nissan Altima with three people inside
Hernandez had been renting a Silver Nissan Altima
Hernandez had known the victim for about a year, The victims girlfriend is the sister of Hernadez's Fiance
The police went to question Hernandez, Who didn't answer the door. a squad car was placed outside. Eventually Hernandez came out, and told the cops he knew they were they and that he had been watching them on his surveillance system
A warrant was issued to seize surveillance footage from Hernandez's home.
hernandez had recently installed a 14 camera system with cameras inside and out.
Upon reviewing the footage, they noticed that the first 6-8 hours of footage after the time of the murder was missing.
at 9:02 PM Hernandez texted a friend from out of state "please make it back"
9:05 he texted the victim, indicating he wanted to come by and get together with him
9:35 he texted the same out of state friend "get your ass up here" then at 10:23 "hurry your ass up"
The man he was texting and one other showed up at hernandez's home, seen on surveillance footage
Shortly after they arrive, Hernandez is seen with a firearm in his home on the surveillance system says "he is upset that he can't trust anyone anymore"
the three left Hernandez's home at 1:12 AM in the silver Nissan Altima, captured on survelliance, phone records and cell tower
the went from Hernadez's home to route 95, headed south towards (? couldn't understand) they turned around and went north. the cell phone tower tracked their movement to a gas station off route 128
at 2:10AM Hernandez bought Gas, Bubbalicious blue cotton candy gum, and black and milds which are used for smoking mariujana (the prosecutor seems to be mistaken about common blunt cigars but oh well)
Next they went to the victims home, at 2:32 am Hernandez sent a text "we're here" to the victim, this is when the victims sister saw him leave with them, Hernandez was driving
They drove back to North Attleboro, this is corroborated by some random surveillance cameras and route was determined by time and distance traveled.
during the ride, Hernandez had a conversation with the victim indicating he was upset with him. The two had gone to a club together friday night.
he said some things happened that night and he wasn't sure if he could trust the victim, one of them was that the victim had spoken to some people He had troubles with, and he was mad about it.
At 3:07 AM the victim sent a text to his sister "did you see who I am with" no response he texted again at 3:11 AM "Hello?"
at 3:19 am his sister replied "who?" at 3:22 the victim texted back "NFL" then 1 minute later "Just so you know"
at the time of these texts, the car is seen on surveillance cameras in the area of the murder site/Hernandez's home
Surveillance cameras show the vehicle driving down the road to the murder site at 3:23 AM
between 3:23 and 3:27 am workers nearby hear multiple gunshots
cameras pick up the vehicle along the route between the murder site and Hernandez's home at 3:27 and 3:28 AM.
Hernandez's own Surveillance picks sees him arriving back home at 3:29 AM
Police confirm it is only a 2 minute drive.
autopsy found that all evidence was consistent with the victim being murdered where he was found. In other words, he wasn't dumped. Also consistent Time of death to the time the car was there.
two through and through wounds to the victim's chest. Police returned to the scene and dug where the victim was, they found the bullets, indicating the victim was on the ground when he was shot. Both bullets were .45 caliber, consistent with the casings found. All fired from the same unknown gun
at 3:30 AM Hernandez is seen with his companions in his driveway, one of whom has a gun.
they go inside. Surveillance shows Hernandez walking around with a gun in his hand.
all three go to the basement. Surveillance cameras shut off
later that day, 5:30 PM Hernandez and his companions return the Nissan Altima to the rental agency, Hernandez offers the attendant Blue Bubbalicious.
one of the side mirrors is broken on the car, footage of the vehicle earlier in the night suggest it wasn't broken when he left Boston, he tells the rental agency he didn't even notice it. The evidence being that it was broken sometime between leaving Boston and arriving back at home.
He rents another car and returns home, companions leave.
At the rental agency, a piece of bubbalicious and a shell casing were found, attendant threw them away. When questioned, she told investigators about it, they found it in the dumpster, Shell casing matched to the casings found at the scene.
Tire impressions at the murder scene right next to the body were consistent with a front wheel drive vehicle (altima is FWD)
Investigators checked out the rental car. Tire treads matched those at the crime scene. Dirt found on the car also matched the crime scene
They found a .22 nearby in a search of everywhere between Hernandez's home and the murder site. Hernandez a month prior had been involved an altercation in providence Rhode island. He had someone with him who was seen to place a gun under a car. This man matches the description of one of his companions on the night of the murder.
The gun under the car in Providence was traced to a florida gunstore. The 22 found between Hernandez's home and the murder site was from the same store.
further search warrant of Hernandez's home ordered. They found 22 ammo, but no 22 gun. They also found a large capacity 7.62 hungarian semi auto rifle, and a fully loaded 32 round magazine . Hernandez's prints on it, he doesn't have the correct paperwork to own it.
Not recovered was the Black semi auto handgun seen in Hernandez's hand before and after the murder. the second individuals gun not found either.
Hernandez's girlfriend was spoken to by police, she was cooperating until a call from hernandez telling her not to. She then stopped talking.
the victim had defensive wounds and seemed to attempt to stop the bullets with his arms.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- The New England Patriots (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/nwe) are offering a new jersey to all fans who want to get rid of the one they bought with Aaron Hernandez (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/24088)'s name on it.
Hernandez is being held in jail on charges of first-degree murder. He has pleaded innocent. The team has released him and taken all Hernandez jerseys off the shelf at its souvenir store at Gillette Stadium.
The team says fans can come to their store at the stadium on the weekend of July 6-7 for a free jersey of comparable value.
Patriots spokesman Stacey James says children may not understand why their parents won't want them wearing their Hernandez jersey.

Still having them follow the current drug policy within the NFL. Think they even suspended a player or two recently from Seattle for that stuff.

I'm pretty sure that most of the Vikings arrests were in the Mike Tice era when there was the whole Loveboat thing.

We need a breakdown by crime. I'm pretty sure a lot of those arrests are DUI.

Players who killed people:

Hernandez
Leonard Little
Brent

Plenty of wifebeaters in there are well.

Obviously - the likes of Jerome Simpson, Sam Huard etc who fancied themselves as dealers.

Wouldn't it still be forbidden according to conference or NCAA rules though? Not being snarky. Legit curious about how that is handled.

Did a quick check and the NCAA still has it listed as a punishable situation if someone gets caught by them.

NCAA spokesman Erik Christianson said in an e-mail that the state legalization “does not impact the NCAA drug-testing rules because the ban and testing policies are not tied to whether a substance is legal for general population use, but rather whether the substance is considered a threat to student- athletes’ health and safety or the integrity of the game.”
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-11-07/ncaa-doesn-t-plan-to-alter-marijuana-rule-after-states-legalize.html

Individual conferences have a similar set of rules but get to determine how strict or lenient the punishments are for everyone they catch. SEC has the rep of being very lenient while either the Big 10 or Big 12 have the rep of being a lot more stricter.

THC testing isnt imediated like blood alcohol testing.. its legal to get drunk on yr day off but not at work.. when its weed involed in a failed drug test there is no way to determine when it entered the system, unlike alcohol..

Nevada State Athletic Commission has acually gone as far as saying its a preformance enhancing drug.. Nick Diaz, who has failed tests for thc metabolites, even s ays that its opens the blood vessels in yr lungs allowing them to carry more oxygen to the limbs and muscles reducing lactic acids..

Jus4 because its decriminalized, doesnt mean it fair game to do it whenever you want.. Just like alcohol..

Also, most testing agencies with a lot of funding, like the one the nfl uses, most likely use hair samples, which are harder to mask, than piss tests..
