I don't think Schaub is washed up or anything. I think he's always just been kind of average.

As Michaels/Collinsworth pointed out, Houston has the type of offense where they need to work the run to get their passing game going. They're (and by extension, Schaub) not a good "come from behind" (lol anal sex) type team where they sling it out. An ideal gameplan for Houston is for Foster and/or Tate to get going early, build a small lead, then work the play action to guys like Johnson and Owens. When they fall behind quickly their whole offense loses its sync.

I understand the score of the game at the time but their run game was working pretty well last night so I think they shoulda just stuck with that a bit more. IDK. Still love Andre Johnson, fav wide reciever besides Calvin and Steve Smith

Some stuff from around the NFL:

Vikings signed Josh Freeman to a 1 year deal.

Eagles states Vick is out vs the Bucs but haven't named the starter for next week's game.

Bills state Thad Lewis from the practice squad is now their starter since EJ Manuel is out for the next few weeks.

According to Vegas, Broncos-Jags current spread line (-28) has tied the highest ever spread since the merger.

The Falcons are just too depleted. Too many young guys playing too many important positions. And Mike Smith doesn't understand when to be aggressive and when to not be aggressive, and once again he was outcoached tonight. Sucks for Tony...shitty year for him to go out on already. I just don't see the Falcons recovering to do anything this year.

Boomer
10-07-2013, 11:42 PM
Oh totally. Mike Smith was a fantastic coach for Matt Ryan's opening years, but his talk about the "process" doesn't work when the Falcons aren't learning anything from game to game. The Falcons almost certainly have the worst injury list in the NFL right now, but that is no excuse for how poor they've played. They just have no heart at all this year, and Mike Smith isn't the coach to get this team fired up about anything. But with how well the Falcons have done under Smith, if the Falcons finish 8-8 or something, I can see them giving him another year.

The league passed a ruling where teams will basically be forced to participate in Hard Knocks if there are no teams that volunteer in a given year.

"The league still will ask for volunteers. If one is not forthcoming, a team will be appointed. All organizations will be eligible with the exception of those that have made the playoffs in at least one of the last two seasons and those teams that have participated in the previous 10 seasons."

More bad news for 49ers Aldon Smith:

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was charged Wednesday with three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon, stemming from a party at his home in June 2012.

The Santa Clara County district attorney's office said in announcing the charges that Smith, 24, is expected to surrender later this month. He is on an indefinite leave of absence from the defending NFC champion 49ers while undergoing treatment for substance abuse at an in-patient facility following a DUI arrest Sept. 20.

I'm having a really hard time seeing the Giants winning more than 4 games this year...maybe even that is generous. I figure they'll win one of the two Redskins games, and then they'll beat either the Cowboys or Eagles (but not both) against all logic. The AFC West was better than expected but I think they can squeeze out a win against one of the Raiders or Chargers. Dunno who else...Vikings next Monday maybe? Not sure why AP wouldn't shred them apart though.

Don't really see how the Giants avoid a bottom 3 record at this point. It was a good run.

A bunch of people called into the Giants postgame show saying the Giants need to draft Bridgewater or another QB and start phasing Eli out Favre/Rodgers style. There is zero chance that happens. If Eli was old enough where he could retire at any year like Favre was, it'd make sense. But he'll be 33 in January. I imagine he's got like 4-5 years left. The Giants' QB of the future will be drafted/groomed in like 2-3 years, not now.

It's not all Eli's fault, anyway. Yes the INTs are ugly and some of those passes have been retarded - but some of them have also come as a result of the receivers not running the proper routes, like the Randle one from yesterday. It's fair to pin last night on Eli as the defense eventually stepped up near the end, but with many of these games it's tough to win when you go into every drive expecting the other offense to put up 7. The Giants' D has been a total sieve for the most part. They need to get a hell of a lot more help on D this April. Without a pass rush the Giants defensive scheme is fucked.

Let's Go Islanders. :(

Alex Smith is safe. You know what you're getting with him and he doesn't make stupid decisions that put his team in jeopardy. When you take a guy that is decent at everything that doesn't make mistakes and plug him into a winning system, he can win. It's going to get sticky when they get down by 2 or 3 TDs, the defense isn't dominating, the run game is going nowhere, and Alex has to step up and win the game.

Yes. The oddsmakers posted a 28 point spread with the belief that it would be a relatively close, 3-point affair between two evenly matched teams. You are truly the only person who expected a rather large margin of victory of Denver over Jacksonville.

Yeah. It is pretty frustrating. I was blaming it on injuries at first because Crabs, Manningham, and Vernon (in that Colts game) were out and it made it really difficult to pass the ball. Some fairly mediocre WRs had to suit up. Now I'm not all that sure. They havent been running the pistol or the option near as much because I think Harbaugh wanted to throw off defenses that had been training the whole offseason to counter it but something has to change soon. I do think Kap is the guy he was last season and not whoever this is right now but his proving ground awaits him. Honestly though, I think Harbaugh pulls this together and they go deep into post-season once again. Hoping, anyhow.

Well, it really hasn't been shut down all that much this season as Harbaugh really hasn't relied on it all too much. He set the precedent in that first Packers game that they weren't one trick ponies and I think he wanted to keep that mentality going. Also, he knew that every team was formulating a plan against it in the offseason so he needed more in their bag of tricks. The option works much better anyhow when it isn't expected so I wouldn't be surprised if they bust it out here and again, it just wont be how it was last season where it was expected but couldn't be defended.

Its going to take some time to readapt to defenses but I think strategy has been fairly solid. If they stick to this system and try to keep evolving their bag of tricks, they'll be ridiculously versatile.

It will last. Because it's NFL Network. And an actual live NFL game, even if it's between the shittiest teams that no one would go out of their way to watch if there are other football options available, has WAY more value in the ratings than whatever random NFL Films reruns they'd be running for 4 hours. The entire point I was making was Thursday night games... in general... are a great idea.

You wanna draw me into this sub-argument about the quality of this year's games. I don't care. I can make the same claim for Monday night games. Shitty games happen. It doesn't make having games on those nights a bad thing.

I'm not arguing how good this years games have been no matter how bad you wanna shift things that direction. My entire point is that Thursday night games are good. In general. For everyone. You get another night of football as a fan, the NFL CLEARLY benefits from it in the ratings department... What is the issue here? That the rate of quality games is low? I've got news for you... the rate of quality games overall is pretty fucking low. You take one of those games and you put them on another night. More time for football. Seriously... what's the problem?

You're definitely in the minority here. I can prove that with the simple fact that I'm pretty sure more people watched Bills-Browns than any NFL films show ever shown on NFL Network. I don't think I really NEED to do the research on that... but I could...

Is that it? Is that really your entire point? That every Thursday night game this year has been utter shit? Awesome. I agree. Moving on...

As a football fan, I'd rather have the option to watch a football game on a Thursday, shitty or not, than not have that option. As would a shitload of other people. As is clear by the fact that the ratings are quite high. So yes, Thursday Night games are a good idea. Even outside Thanksgiving. Turns out football players are capable of playing football on other Thursdays so... they have taken advantage of it.

Lol you win again by side-stepping the topic. No one mentioned ratings except you. Why? Because as a fan, why the fuck should I care about ratings? They have no impact on whether or not I watch, no matter what day it is. If the game is shit, I stop watching. A main point at the beginning WAS game quality (and player health) as why we dislike Thursday games.

You conveniently glossed over those to talk about ratings. Point for you!

And my entire point to start, which you are conveniently ignoring, is that when EVERY GAME on Thursday has been utter shit, it's not fun to watch.

Because it shows that a shitload of other fans enjoy watching the game and maybe your opinion does not represent that of all football fans who seem to think it's a fine idea. You dumb fuck.

Seriously feel like you're desperate to "get a win back" or something since that fucking wrestling topic. lol

You mean when you did the same exact thing you're doing now and claiming victory? Get over yourself.

Actually it was me and a few other people you were ignoring but... that's beside the point.

I will bold this so maybe you will actually read it:

I dislike Thursday night football games because it is rough on the players with the short rest and the game quality suffers. I don't care how many others watch, I think it is a stupid idea to have them all year.

You are mentally deficient. I am talking about MY opinion. But I guess it is wrong because you disagree.

Well your opinion has been shown to be shit elsewhere. So... yeah... I don't give a fuck.

Hope Arizona ties this game up and it turns into the greatest overtime in NFL history.

I wonder how many Seahawks fans existed in Arizona 3 years ago...
