I'm getting close to the ending myself. But no matter the ending, I'm looking forward to being free to do all kinds of odd side-quests and whatever else LONG after I've finished the story.

Anyone have trouble getting Five Finger Fillet to count as a win? I've beat it so many times, but I didn't get the scrap for winning in Torquemada and my 100 completion checklist still says I haven't beat it.

Ending spoilers ahead:

I almost felt bad for Dutch before he offed himself. Almost. It's one of those things where it's hard to actually feel sympathy for someone who's that much of a bastard, but the whole "That's a Paradox" speech came close to making him sympathetic.

I fucking hate the fact that we get done with Dutch, and then we go through a bunch of those lame intro missions again. "Ride wagon." "lasso horse." "Ride halfway across the map." I also think the stuff with John and his family is kind of too little, too late. It just doesn't really do much for me.

Right up to the end of John's story, and I loved it. I know it sucks that John Marston dies, but that last mission was a cool way for him to go out. It's so fucking...Western, really.

I know people hate Jack, but so far my only real complaint is John's not Jack. You spend hours, possibly dozens of hours, with John Marston. his voice, his mannerisms, his character in general. And then they drop Jack in at the end, so once you've gotten to that point, you're randomly stuck with someone else. So I get it. I haven't done the remaining missions yet, and probably won't today. I burned through John's last missions because with each of them, I was sure it was wrapping up and I wanted to see the "ending."

one of my favorite things about John was that he usually sounded somewhat bemused when dealing with people.

Kane, I think you have to beat 2 different guys. Like, you know how once you beat the first guy twice, another guy sits down? I think that's what you have to do.

I was told it was 3 for the scrap at Torquemada, so I've done more than two in a row. I've gone as high as 4 before striking out. or sticking out, as the case may be. I don't have the most expensive bets memorised yet.

G
06-04-2010, 05:13 PM
Yeah, to "win" you need to beat everyone around you until you are the only one left, as they leave when they lose. I think the 4th guy is the "boss".

Bears are my problem. I've only been fatally attacked by a cougar once in SP and twice in MP. Bears will still sneak attack you, but are also frequently surrounded by other bears and boards.

I just wanted to say I don't like any of the aiming options in this game. Expert's too anal (Which might not be as bad if the controls weren't unresponsive even with the sensitivity cranked), and the aim assist on both casual and normal goes from anal to "paint chip eating." Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the game. I just think I'd enjoy it a lot more with better shooting mechanics. They can range from a minor annoyance to a serious fucking chore.

It's either a like it or hate it. I liked it because you continue your adventures as the son. But I wished Rockstar would have had a bit more dialogue at the barn, AND let me shoot the G-Men. I targeted most of them, and during the sequence, I see body wounds and blood splatter just sitting in mid-air. And Ross and his crew and sitting there like nothing happened.

A lot of people don't have it despite entering the code. Try re entering the code, and if that fails, try clearing the cache. While neither are a guaranteed fix, they work for some people.

What the fuck is a puma?

The cougar (Puma concolor), also known as puma, mountain lion, mountain cat, catamount or panther, depending on the region, is a mammal of the family Felidae, native to the Americas. This large, solitary cat has the greatest range of any large wild terrestrial mammal in the Western Hemisphere,[3] extending from Yukon in Canada to the southern Andes of South America. An adaptable, generalist species, the cougar is found in every major American habitat type. It is the second heaviest cat in the American continents after the jaguar. Although large, the cougar is most closely related to smaller felines.

A capable stalk-and-ambush predator, the cougar pursues a wide variety of prey. Primary food sources include ungulates such as deer, elk, moose, and bighorn sheep, as well as domestic cattle, horses and sheep, particularly in the northern part of its range. It will also hunt species as small as insects and rodents. This cat prefers habitats with dense underbrush and rocky areas for stalking, but it can also live in open areas. The cougar is territorial and persists at low population densities. Individual territory sizes depend on terrain, vegetation, and abundance of prey. While it is a large predator, it is not always the dominant species in its range, as when it competes for prey with other predators such as the jaguar, grey wolf, American Black Bear, and the grizzly bear. It is a reclusive cat and usually avoids people. Attacks on humans remain rare, despite a recent increase in frequency.[4]

Due to excessive hunting following the European colonization of the Americas and the continuing human development of cougar habitat, populations have dropped in most parts of its historical range. In particular, the cougar was extirpated in eastern North America, except for an isolated sub-population in Florida; there are many sightings that claim the animal is recolonizing parts of its former eastern territory, such as Maine and northern Michigan [5][6] where there have been recent sightings. In North America, the cougar is native to Western Canada (primarily British Columbia and Yukon), Washington, Oregon and Northern California. Oregon alone is home to more than 5,000 cougars, with the highest densities in the Blue Mountains in the northeastern part of the state and in the southwestern Cascade Mountains. Their primary food source here is deer, but they will also consume elk, raccoons, bighorn sheep, and other mammals and birds.

Cougars are territorial animals and maintain home ranges of up to 100 miles. Most active at dawn and dusk, they are lone hunters. They are generally solitary animals, except for mothers who remain with kittens for about two years. While actual cougar sightings have increased, coyotes, bobcats, and dogs are often mistaken for cougars. A cougar can be identified by its large size, cat-like appearance, consistent tan or tawny body color, and long tail. An adult cougar's tail is nearly three feet long and can be a third to a half of its total length. Cougar tracks can be differentiated from dog tracks by paying attention to detail. The cougar has recently made a comeback in the state of Wyoming, where it presently has the largest population in North America[citation needed].

I live in Puma country and will countiue to call them pumas, not cougars.

A lot of theories are abound that he's God, the Devil, one of the Angels of Death/Judgment, or simply John's conscience. I doubt we'll ever get answers, but I'm not sure his talk about his son growing up to kill as easily as Marston, nor the fact that his response to "Damn You" is "Many have" fit either with God or a ghost of someone from John's past.

I do think someone was either testing or tormenting him, but I'm not sure it was someone from his past.

Also, I think it's kinda cool that the last place you see him is so significant in the end.

What are your Honor and Fame levels like? I think it depends on where you stand in one or both of those categories, i.e. if your honor level is real low, you might get a notice in the upper corner of the screen warning you that if you commit any crimes whatsoever, you'll be pursued or whatever. Dunno for sure though, just what I feel to be a pretty well-educated guess.

I think, too, another thing is that it varies from town to town in the game as to how you're percieved based on your previous actions on prior visits. For example if you killed a bunch of people, or robbed the bank or whatever too much, even though your honor and fame might be pretty high, the people of that town might look down on you and the law there may pursue you relentlessly with even the slightest slip-up. At least that's how I think it works.

He's found by a rock to the north of The Scratching Post by some archways. He plays a harmonica. He can most often be found in the daytime however, reports of him showing up at the same location for the first encounter have been reported at 8:50pm, 11:00pm, and 2:00am.

I am of the opinion that it is the devil. Many have "damned" the devil as well. I would assume the devil knows marston better than god would, given how much of a sinner he is. Also, the missions you do, parallel the temptations of christ.

Regarding the I Know You mission:

I would say that he is most certainly a ghost from Marstons past, probably someone he knew and gunned down during a job. If you read the newspapers, it says how some towns have reported ghost sightings.

Plus, looking at the guides it says you cant complete the mission once you are in control of Jack, so its definately someone John knew.

I'm tempted (no pun intended) to agree. Though the Angels of Death are often portrayed as testing the soon to die, so I could see an argument there. The reminder that he will be held accountable makes me think of the Devil, though. Technically, he doesn't sit in judgment, but he doesn'tneed to. He seems to be reminding Marston that he's a bad man, something I doubt God would do, even Old Testament God.

The ghosts regard Tumbleweed and only tumbleweed as far as I know, a place supposedly haunted and one the stranger never appears in.

The second point is just kind of...Dumb. Why would any of the other theories be invalidated by not being able to complete it as Jack? Would God/The Devil/Any other party in charge of judgment or testing John test Jack about John's sins, test his character, or foreshadow his upcoming (past for Jack) death?

The fucking right thumbstick is way too sensitive no matter what I set the default sensitivity slider to under Options, and 90% of the time I end up getting called out for a fucking duel for cheating, and I have to load up my last save.

Likewise. You can bluff the AI so easily and theyll either fold or take the bait like idiots. Took out 2 players in 1 hand with a pair of 3's while the AI had a King High and a pair of 2's. The only pain is beating that last guy, because a majority of the time they just reraise on every hand.

Just play based off what you have. Say you have 4 6's, start with that as your opening bet. More than likely the AI will call a bluff and get caught with a true bet and lose a die. Keep doing this until the AI has 2 die left. Reading them from there is easy as they always try to bluff and if you have more die, you know what's really in play.

You're just guessing how many dice of a certain kind you think are on the whole table. If you're unsure about something, you can just up the bet yourself to something you're more positive about, or you can call their bluff if you think there's less than that (if there's more than that, the bet was good). If you bet a higher number, or more dice, you just keep it going.. Pretty fun game, especially with more people.. I've only ever had 2 NPCs at the table though.

Not really. Me and my buddy were running around getting the gang hideout free roam achievement. There were only about 5 players in the session. We were on our way to Fort Mercer and there were 2 guys in there. We've been watching them for a while and they should have been done a long time ago. We get there, slip in the back, we kill a couple of guys and we get credit for the challenge.

They kill me, my partner kills them, and we beat feet into Mexico to Tesuro Azul. We start that up, they follow and shoot us up all the way to Nosalida. Bunch of pricks. We got the achievement in the long run. But learned to sit back and wait or go somewhere else.

Since you're required to escalate each bid, it doesn't take long to kill someone with one or two dice. It's easier when there's only you two, but it's very much the nature of the beast.

I've tried this too, but I have the same problem. I've tried doing it without using dead eye as well, but I'll get to 4 and then run out of bullets. I'm using the Evans repeater btw. 22 max shots.

California is near The Scratching Post, and Aztec Gold is found in Sidewinder Gulch. Just set a waypoint there and use fast travel via your campsite and you're set man.

On the in game stats menu it'll tell you how many you have in each of the 3 territories. From what I understand, there are a gajillion ??? bounties, so you'd be going at it for a long time looking to run out of them.

Nekoti Rock, Bearclaw Camp, Aurora Basin, and 1 other location near those. Simple stuff.

Did them already. And yeah, it was those three. Only problem I had was that at Nekoti, my horse decided to commit suicide. I whistled for it, and as I got on, it walked off the edge of the cliff. So I fell, my horse died, and I got set upon by a pack of wolves. Once I had fended off the wolves, more of the outlaws had already shown, and my new horse was still not there. So I shoot them, try and chase down one of their horses, which are running away from me, and finally decide to just book it on foot, whistling every couple of seconds. :D

I still find it weird that you can hold A and run without any press of the directional stick.

Yeah, I've noticed that as well. Had a pretty huge day in-game, as I earned 3 achievements, On the Trail of de Vaca (10G)for finding all 94 map locations, Man of Honor/Chivalry's Dead (25G) for having maxed out +HONOR/+FAME levels, Austin Overpowered for "completing" Twin Rocks, Pike's Basin, and Gaptooth Breach. Gonna have to keep completing those along with the other two US hideouts until I've done them all in 24 in-game hours (48 real world mins.). I'd love to finally obtain the US Marshal outfit.

I've never had that happen.

I've had it glitch when I was trying to give back the money to a shopkeeper. Despite mashing the "B" (I think) button to give it to him, it waits a minute and says I didn't do it. Sometimes, the prompt doesn't even come up.

Then again, the controls in this game are pretty terrible. I can't tell you how many times I've died simply because instead of taking cover, my MP character decides to sit there with a thumb up his ass. Or decided he doesn't need his gun out anymore, despite full ammo and me aiming right at an enemy. Or Decided not to duck back down into cover after I release the aim button. And I'm still surprised every time my character has to run in a five foot circle just to turn around.

Sounds like real life...How about a fish out of water story where instead of playing a grizzled veteran that thought he was done but was pulled back in, instead you play a guy that gets caught in the middle of everything and occasionally freaked out. That would be fun.

Well yeah. It's totally like real life. Except I can whistle for a horse from across the map, murder people and pay only a fine, and stop time to execute a dozen people if I have a good enough gun.

If you've got to Master Hunter 5, then you have access to the Buffalo Rifle. Use that. I used Deadeye, but I didn't mark, so I don't know if you can get it by marking them. I merely activated it to slow down time and insure I had a clean headshot. then I blew the bear's brains out.

I also got it in like 45 seconds because I got gang raped by three bears after the first one. If not for deadeye and headshots, I might have been SCREEEEEWED.
