Wow the Jets were painful to watch. Fair play that Giants defense was relentless. Could see them make a deep playoff run on that alone. I'm perhaps foolishly still holding out some hope for next week but if the Jets don't make it then I'll have no complaints, simply not good enough this year. After last year's good run the lockout just came at the worst time and disrupted everything. Not an excuse by any means, it was the same situation for all teams, just some dealt with it better than others.

The Bengals get the 6th wild card no matter what happens if they win, the Ravens would be the 5th Wild Card with a Steelers win or #2 seed still with a Steelers loss.

If Denver wins, Denver would win AFC WEST no matter what. Winner of SD/Oakland would win AFC WEST with a Denver loss.

And then if he gets up and runs for a touchdown because you slowed down so you could lightly touch his helmet...

They're trained to tackle. If a guy is down and the whistle has blown, it's one thing. In the middle of a play if a guy goes down untouched and gets back up to his knees, fuck slowing down.

The Giants' chest-thumping wasn't confined to the field or the locker room, as team spokesman Pat Hanlon took to Twitter after the game.

"On 2nd thought, to our neighbors, thanks for allowing us to visit 'your' house (wink, wink)," Hanlon wrote. "We appreciate the hospitality.'

Hanlon later added: "Again, to our hosts...sorry about the mess we left behind. We'll clean it up later. We have a big game in "your" house this week."

So are the Eagles definitely eliminated now, no matter what happens in their game?

They ended up pulling what Oakland did last year in having the best divisional record (4-1) but being horrible against everyone else (3-7) killed their playoff chance.

Assuming the Eagles win next week, they would also have the same record Oakland had last year as well.

Thats not to say that he wont come back and be productive, hell..Jamal Lewis missed 2001 with a torn ACL, came back in 2002 and went for 1300 yards and then in 2003 ran for over 2000. That was his 2nd torn acl too, since had torn one in college back in 1998.

FearedSanctity
12-24-2011, 11:39 PM
Dunno, just depends on AP. Demaryius Thomas tore his ACL in something like March or April this year, and had he not broken his pinky in practice he'd have played in the season opener. Ditto fro Ryan Clady who tore his in the offseason the year before and started the whole season. I think AP probably ends up on the PUP list and comes back after week 6, can't see him missing all of next season

If anyone is going to be "This year's Packers" I think it's going to be Detroit.

Powerhouse offense, a game against the winners of their division in week 17 with the chance to knock them out of the playoffs eventually as well. They CAN beat Green Bay the way both teams are playing right now. I wouldn't really be that surprised to see Detroit be the latest 5/6th seed to make it to the Super Bowl.

Also, there have been something like 11 different NFC teams in the Super Bowl in the last 11 years. Either Detroit, SF or Dallas going would make it 12 in 12.

I thought Dallas couldn't clinch the NFC East since the Giants beat the Jets unless it was just for a wild card spot in general regardless if they won or lost to Philly?

The situation was Dallas COULD have clinched the division by beating Philly if the Giants had lost to the Jets since it would have given them a 2 game lead (7-8 Giants, 9-6 Cowboys) and the Giants wouldn't have been able to catch up by beating Dallas this week. Since the Giants won though, a win over Philly would have made them 9-6 to the Giants' 8-7 so the Giants would have been able to win the division this week regardless since both teams going 9-7 would get the Giants in on the head to head tiebreaker.

It was just confusing because of the situation. Usually when a team has nothing to play for in a game it means they're locked in or eliminated. Rarely does a team have "nothing to play for" in week 16 and then suddenly have a meaningful week 17 game.

Boomer
12-25-2011, 11:47 PM
Honestly, I think the Lions have a more beatable defense. If you manage the Lions' defensive front, they aren't a particularly good unit. The Falcons DL is completely solid, and their LBs are fantastic. The Falcons are statistically better overall too, but I know that doesn't mean a ton. The Falcons just struggle against high-scoring passing offenses, and the Giants have only shown flashes of that this year. But the Falcons almost never blow anyone out, so your team always has a chance.

Sir Lettus, I need you to help me feel I have a shot at winning my fantasy championship game given your Saints expertise and I'm assuming at least decent knowledge of the Falcons.

I currently sit down 9 points with my only remaining player being Matt Ryan, meanwhile my opponent has Colston and Julio Jones left. I'm obviously pretty boned, but any shot either team could shut down these two? Passing to Jones wouldn't hurt too much given that I have his QB. I know Ryan can always pass it to White and Gonzalez and Brees has several other options. Basically do I have any shot at Ryan putting up decent numbers while Colston and Jones get held to something minimal? Or are both teams secondaries at the level to where them having a decent game is unavoidable?

Please give me some hope :(

Having a Saints receiver is a crap shoot. You never know which guy is gonna be "the guy" on which night. You could get lucky there.

Example: The few times I started Meachem, he had like 8-10pts if that. Last game of the regular season I sat him, he had 60. They can have big games, but it's different every week who pads the stats.

Example: The few times I started Meachem, he had like 8-10pts if that. Last game of the regular season I sat him, he had 60. They can have big games, but it's different every week who pads the stats.

I've had Colston since like week 3 when someone dropped him apparently thinking his injury was more serious and I picked him up and started him two weeks later.

He hasn't been on fire every week but he's definitely consistent.

Of course, now that I say that, he'll suck tonight for me.

The Giants win the division if the Dallas games ends in a tie. If Dallas can't win it, my ideal situation is for it to go to OT and the Giants just play ball control and run the clock looking like douchers so it ends in a tie instead of winning. Make it as anti-climatic as possible for those fuckers.

As Screech said any Saints WR/RB is a gamble cause Brees spreads it out so much..

Roddy White will get most of the double coverage just because he is their biggest threat and because of the things he has said about NOLA in general.. Jones has been spotty all season.. Saints D has given up some big plays and will prolly give up 2-3 30+ yarders tonight as well.. They have that bend but don't break mentality..

Your best bet is Matt Ryan mainly cause of the few big plays.. Also, we've been shutting down the run ever since the Rams game.. Look for the Saints to get up early, and if they continue to shut down Turner, Ryan will have to air it out, to play catch up.. Just hope he goes to Roddy White and not Jones..

You have an ok chance. If the Saints score big early, the Falcons will have to play catch-up through the air. This is likely. I can tell you that the Falcons tend to try and beat the Saints with ball control, and it eventually stops working, so I would expect a decent fantasy game from Ryan. And any points Julio scores will be negated mostly by Ryan. It's certainly possible you could come back.

So after reading an article on NFL.com about lack of quality backup QBs citing Indy and Chicago as teams that failed based solely on losing their starter, I decided to do some math.

Teams that have lost their starting QB to injury at any point this season are 25-35 without them and 47-49 with them.

If you take out Indy, teams whose QBs have sat due to injury are 23-22 without them and 47-49 with them.

Interesting. Outside of Indy's debaucle, teams actually have a winning record with their starting QB injured and a losing record with him playing.

I know in my league I somehow made the title game and am playing a guy with Brees, Colston and Curtis Lofton left whereas I have Darren Sproles and a 71 point lead. I'm a little worried since Brees threw down 85 last week with the scoring system we use and 59 the last time they played Atlanta. He's only scored under 50 one time since the middle of October. I had a 100 point lead before Jordy Nelson went off last night.

The local Comcast Sports Network had an interesting debate a few minutes ago regarding the Patriots options for Week 17.

The Patriots might decide their playoff route based on when they want to play Pitt or Baltimore. It also assumes both Houston and Pitt/Baltimore advance to the next round.

If they want Pitt/Baltimore early, then keep the #1 seed and probably play the other at New England for the potential AFC title game.

If they want Houston, then lose and let Bal/Pitt win to take the #1 seed. The Patriots would lose home field for the potential AFC title game but in return only have to worry about facing either Pitt or Baltimore and not both during the playoffs.

If the record doesn't mean a lot at this point because of "the different eras", then keeping track of ALL TIME RECORDS in the NFL don't mean shit. If the last name was Brady or any ESPN poster childs, there would be no mention of the record being meaningless because of a record that was set 27 years ago.

Brees is amazing and nice to see him finally get the record after trying the past couple of years. Even Brady has a chance to pass Marino (needs just 187 yards) but won't come close to Brees.

A bunch of records got broken this year and almost all involving QBs (Tebow comebacks, Newton rookie QB passing, Brady-BB wins combo, etc).

I think even Ross Ventrone on the Patriots might have broken the most transactions by a player in a season with 20 and counting (21 once he will gets resigned again). Belichick actually found a loophole regarding the 53-man rosters that allows him 54 players and figured it out due to the Jets doing something similar with Woodhead in a smaller scale.

2. Aug. 29 -- Signed to 90-man roster

Saints, Bucs complete 54-man roster trick
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 30, 2009, 2:55 PM EST

When posting on Tuesday a brief blurb pointing out that the Saints had placed tackle Jammal Brown on injured reserve and also had signed offensive lineman Nick Leckey, I thought to myself, “That name sounds more familiar than it should.”

So, as I do in most cases when resolving a nagging question might actually require effort on my part, I ignored it.

But when I received today the e-mail notice from the Buccaneers that linebacker Matt McCoy has been re-signed, I remembered why Leckey’s name stood out from the crowd of bottom-of-the-roster slapolas who are trying their damnedest (and we respect for that, despite calling them slapolas, slappies, or slapdicks) to stick on an NFL team.

Leckey was cut on Saturday to create a spot for quarterback Chase Daniel, just like McCoy was cut on Saturday to create a spot for receiver Mario Urrutia.

It’s the 54-man roster trick — a device for creating an extra roster spot by cutting late in a given week a vested veteran whom the team trusts to not sign with another team. By cutting the veteran on Saturday, the player misses no practice time (other than a walk-through) and loses no money. Then, the following week, the vested veteran is re-signed.

Typically, the player who was called up to fill a specific roster need is then cut again, just as the Bucs did with Urrutia. In New Orleans, however, the Saints have not yet been required to cut Daniel, since Brown has been placed on injured reserve.

Technically, the move violates no league rules — as long as the teams don’t tell the players who are cut that there will be a spot for them the following week and/or as long as the teams don’t seek assurances from the players (or their agents) that they won’t sign with other teams.

Surely, the Saints didn’t cut Leckey and the Bucs didn’t cut McCoy without explaining what would happen this week. Even more surely, neither team set those players loose without feeling pretty darn confident that they would re-sign this week.

And they have.

Here’s the caveat. After next month’s trading deadline, vested veterans must pass through waivers, so if a team tries the 54-man roster trick, there’s a risk that no amount of winking and/or nodding will ensure that the player who is cut on Saturday will still be available on Tuesday.

Not surprised other teams do it or have done it earlier although I believe Belichek didn't start to actively use the 54-man trick until he noticed the Jets doing the same with Woodhead.

Problem with the Jets was they were dumb enough to use it on a decent player and it backfired on them. Nobody wants Ventrone but a lot of it is due to him making about $350k this season as sort of a "gift" and BB making sure he gets placed back on the roster for paycheck day so he doesn't lose out on any money.

The Bengals are in position to earn a second playoff berth in three seasons with a win Sunday against Baltimore at Paul Brown Stadium.
It would be hard to tell that by the all of the empty seats at PBS this season.
The announced crowd for Saturday’s 23-16 win against Arizona was 41,273. That total represents the number of tickets distributed and not necessarily the number of people in attendance. It’s the third time this season the announced crowd has been less than 42,000, with the crowd of 41,142 for the Buffalo game on Oct. 2 being the smallest crowd in PBS regular-season history.
In an attempt to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen for the regular-season finale against Baltimore, players turned into salesmen after Saturday’s game and the team announced that it is offering a two-for-one ticket purchasing deal for season-ticket holders.
“I just want to thank the fans who were out there today,” said defensive tackle Domata Peko. “We really felt you guys out there, and that helped us out big time. I really want to encourage all of the Cincinnati fans to come out and cheer us on as we try to make the playoffs.”
Beginning Monday, season-ticket holders may call the ticket office at (513) 621-8383 with their account information to take advantage of the offer and purchase tickets.
A win against Baltimore would clinch the sixth and final playoff spot in the AFC for the Bengals (9-6). The Ravens (11-4) need a win or a loss by Pittsburgh against Cleveland to clinch the AFC North division title.
Cornerback Adam Jones was in full campaign mode Saturday.
“I’m just happy for the team and the city of Cincinnati,” said Jones. “The fans did a great job getting behind us, and we need all of you this week.”
The Bengals' streak of 57 sellouts, stretching back to 2003, ended last year. They have had just one sellout – against Pittsburgh – in their last 11 home games. That has meant no local television broadcast for those 10 games.
Through the first seven home games this season, the Bengals have drawn 330,570 to PBS, or 72 percent of the stadium’s capacity. PBS seats 65,515.
The Baltimore game has been moved from its original 1 p.m. kickoff time to 4:15 p.m. Under NFL blackout rules, teams have to sell out games 72 hours in advance of kickoff in order for them to be shown in markets within a 75-mile radius. For the Bengals that includes Cincinnati, Dayton and Lexington. Extensions of 24 hours have been granted in the past, but the Bengals are hoping that won’t be necessary. They're #32 in attendance, only team averaging in the 40,000's. Im guessing this is showing the downside of the blackout rule, in that if you can't watch the games, then it is hard to get additional interest for people to go to the games. At least that even if they made the playoffs they wouldnt have to worry about the embarassment that would be not being able to sell out a playoff game.

I might go to the Ravens game there next year.

SlickyTrickyDamon
12-27-2011, 07:21 AM
Why would they have to worry about selling out a playoff game? They would be the wildcard team wouldn't they? They wouldn't be playing in Cinci.

Though I don't think they would need to worry about that anyways. Even if they did host a playoff game people would do what you plan to do next year: buy a ticket as a fan of the opposing team.

Perhaps Pacman Jones and the other Cincinnati Bengals (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/cin/) players are better salesmen (http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Bengals-players-beg-for-fan-support.html) than we gave them credit for.
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, (http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20111226/SPT02/312260045/Ticket-push-full-swing?odyssey=tab%7Ctopnews%7Ctext%7CBengals) Bengals fans were lined up outside of Paul Brown Stadium on Monday waiting to buy tickets for the regular-season finale against the Baltimore Ravens (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/bal/). The Bengals (9-6) are in a win-and-in situation for an AFC wild-card spot, but played Saturday against Arizona to a crowd of just over 40,000 fans.

Approximately 2,000 tickets were sold in the first couple of hours using a "buy one, get one free" offer for Bengals season ticketholders. And while the minor league baseball-type promotion has moved the needle on ticket sales for a team desperate for a home-field advantage Sunday, it has raised some eyebrows around the NFL. For each free ticket given out, the Bengals have to absorb 34 percent of its cost and reimburse the league for the visiting team's share of the gate.

9er's release Braylon Edwards..

http://www.braylonedwards.com/media/statement-to-fans/

I was released today by the 49ers due to my injury that required more time to rehab and hasn’t allowed me to re-sync with the offense. I wish the 49ers organization the best of luck during the Playoffs. I will be working hard this off season to strengthen my knee and prepare for the 2012 season. Thanks for your continued support and for being such loyal fans.

Drew Brees to Darren Sproles for the record....

ANd the Chargers are sitting home and about to fire their coach.

I find it funny that they draft manning and trade him away (I know it wasnt their choice).

Then They Let Brees walk and go with Rivers.

Both Are Super Bowl winning QBs now. And the Chargers are perennial playoff underachievers.

Lots of ammo for angry Chargers fans.

"None of us will forget what we saw Monday night. We saw greatness. We saw one of our generation's special quarterbacks take down a record that has lasted 27 years. This much I know: This new mark won't last another 27.

Heck, it might not even last a week. New England's Tom Brady is just 190 yards behind Brees heading into the final week.

For now, the kid got his wish.

It's just too bad it happened the way it did."

Well, I found out that they were only gonna move the Saints/Panthers game to 3pm if the Falcons had won last night..

So, I guess Brees will start with the chance the the 9er's will lose to the Rams.. Part of me is happy cause he will torch Car's secondary, but the other part of me (thinking the 9ers will win) wants him fresh for the playoff run..

Speaking of Indy, where has Requiem been all season?

Phoned it in a long time ago. Going to be pissed if Colts win and Rams lose next week. They'd better just throw this game honestly. There is no point in winning at all. We won 2 in a row already, didn't go winless, now give it a rest and just draft Luck. Keep both QBs the next 1-2 years and try to get Peyton a 2nd ring. Then build for the next era. Luck could be a franchise QB for the next 15 years if he's got what it takes.

Wayne possibly gone soon. Media (and him) were talking about how last week's game might have been his last at Lucas Oil.

Figure Jeff Saturday will be gone when Manning leaves. Dallas Clark getting up there. Gonna be losing some veterans, so the window for a super bowl is closing and then it's gonna be rebuilding for the next few years while they get a team built for Luck.

Nark Order
12-27-2011, 04:15 PM

I could see the Rams drafting Luck if they get the #1 spot should Bradford have problems with his recovery or it ends up revealing he's too injury prone. The Rams took the risk when the drafted him considering he was already hurt and missed out on the entire 2009 OU season.

Money-wise, Luck might be a lot cheaper to invest considering the new CBA lowered the rookie wage scale for draft picks.

You don't really need a good QB to win a Superbowl, just someone that isn't similar to Rex Grossman. Trent Dilfer (and Brad Johnson) has been used as the case against this for years although you do need an excellent defense if the QB isn't "elite."

The Rams can't draft Luck. Come on. With all the problems with that team, they just drafted a QB 2 years ago who had a good rookie season and came 1 game from leafing them to the playoffs. There's no way they don't trade that pick away if they get it.
