All I can look forward to now is the 9ers getting a worthy wideout in the draft. Also, The Browns are looking like they just may draft RG3. I don't know if I agree with giving up on Colt so quickly but I'm torn a bit.

<font color=goldenrod>Bill Simmons mentioned on his podcast last week that he and every Pats fan he's spoken to were openly rooting for the Giants yesterday...to the point where they would be disappointed if they had to play the Niners and were denied a shot at revenge. The revenge factor does worry me a bit...an extra motivated Brady and Belichick is never a good thing.
Patriots are going to be installed as the favorites, probably like 3 points or so. It's kinda funny to me that they're the favorites seeing as they already lost to a depleted Giants team and the offense just hasn't been the same against good teams. I'm also still not totally sold on their defense. They did look better yesterday, but they still basically allowed JOE FLACCO to have a game-winning drive if Lee Evans wasn't a stupid piece of shit.
Gonna be a great game.</font>

Dunno why people are getting on Lee Evans' case. Sterling Moore perfectly smacked the ball out of his hands. Was a great defensive play.

<font color=goldenrod>It was a great defensive play but you just have to hold on to that ball for dear life. Some Ravens fans are claiming that Evans took 2 steps with the ball so it should have been ruled a TD anyway. Could you imagine if they called that? Would have been a riot at Gillette.</font>
I was about to ask, what constitutes a TD when it comes to a play like that? Because I was looking at his feet during the replays and I thought I saw 2 steps but just figured maybe that's not the rule on scoring plays
Evil Vito
01-23-2012, 11:13 AM
<font color=goldenrod>I'm sure Mike Fatcessa will spend 2 weeks talking about how the Super Bowl losing team always regresses the next year and pointing out that the Giants have a brutal schedule next year.
The Giants were actually installed as the favorites? Fuck.</font>
just looked again actually, borderline when it comes to the 2nd step and Sterling Moore knocking the ball loose, seems pretty simultaneous

just so i have it in writing: the green bay packers are going to be completely fucked next year. this year they skated by only facing 4 teams with winning records thanks to the year priors average record (super bowl win or not they were a wild card team.) this coming year being 15-1 there scheadule will be that of a non-pee wee football team and the will be embarassed.

<font color=goldenrod>I'm not sure on the exact ruling, but I do think the league probably should have gone into a replay review for it. I don't think it was conclusive enough to overturn but a play of that magnitude should have at least warranted a second look.
NFL has already come out defending the officials for not doing a video review. Kinda pathetic that the NFL has to publicly defend the refs every single week.</font>

I didn't go back and look at any replays but in real time I would say that it's not a catch. Maybe it was closer than it looked but I wasn't really parked in front of the TV at the time.

I would think the rules are the same as out of bounds plays where even if you get both feet in, you still have to complete the catch.

01-23-2012, 11:33 AM
The Bengals lost to the Ravens earlier this year because of a similar call. Jermaine Gresham caught a ball, got both feet down in the endzone but then lost the ball when he fell to the ground. The refs said he didn't complete the catch so it was an incompletion.

A comment some guy made on Kyle Williams signing with the 9ers over 1 year ago:
"Get ready to have your hearts in your throat whenever Williams is on the field, Niner fans. This dude is so unpredictable and takes crazy chances with the ball. He lacks concentration and drops and fumbles more passes and punt returns in important situations than anyone I've ever seen. In fact his very last play of his ASU career was a fumbled punt return in the biggest game of the year vs our rival Univ of AZ. The score was tied just a minute or so on the clock. U of A was punting. Everyone's thinking o.t.. All he had to do was catch the ball and take a knee or run it a few yards. But no, he wanted to be a hero and already had his mind running up the field before he even caught the ball. It went right through his hands, bounced off his leg and U of A recovered it. They went on to score a FG. Game & season over! Fans left stunned! Williams is very inconsistent. It doesn't matter if he runs a 4 flat you got to have the ball in your hands first! He can go from hero to zero in 4.3 too."

 ESPN earlier had a discussion of who gets to use Peyton Manning's locker with Brady and Eli both being a bit of an embarrassment to Peyton. Eli already has a better playoff record and potentially could pass his brother in rings which could really make everyone rethink of Peyton as the best QB.
On the other hand, his biggest rival would be using his locker and would be a big deal if the Patriots were to win in their house. Should the Pats win, Brady would automatically become the new Montana and enough to tip the debates to Brady's side on who is better (5 SB appearances in 10 years, better playoff record than Manning, more rings).
Brady gets the locker due to the host being an AFC team.

He's obviously going to play...but when he re-entered the game yesterday after his injury he wasn't targeted once and he did little more than serve as a decoy. If he can be banged up enough to NOT be a mandatory double-team guy, that could be huge.

<font color=goldenrod>I think the Giants have the more balanced team. My main reason to be worried about the Patriots really just has to do with the fact that beating Brady and Belichick in the Super Bowl for the second time in such a short time frame just feels like something that's too good to be true irregardless of who's on the field. There is definitely a mystique about those guys and the fact that the burden of revenge is on them only makes it more troublesome. The Patriots are the only team in the AFC that would plant that doubt in my head.
Assuming Gronkowski is healthy (gotta figure he will be), I'd say both offenses are equally explosive. Offensive line play is going to be majorly important obviously - I feel like the Giants might have the edge there. They didn't play too well yesterday, but they won't be facing a defense as vicious as the 49ers either. I'm really not sure how much the running game is going to play a factor especially if it turns into a shootout early.
Special teams I'd give the advantage to the Patriots - Weatherford and Mesko are both really good and field position is going to be huge. However I'd take Gostkowski over Tynes because he has a bigger leg and Tynes has had some playoff misses in the past. As far as the return game goes, the Giants have absolutely none. The Pats' might not be much to write home about but Woodhead is probably better than what the Giants have to offer.
The defense is the big difference maker. As has been said ad nauseum, the Giants' pass rush is the key to the game. When Brady is rattled he is beatable. Both secondaries are exploitable but I still have more faith in the Giants making the key deflections over the Pats.</font>

Report: Raiders considering three, including “mystery candidate”
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 24, 2012, 2:34 PM EST
ESPN reported earlier Tuesday that Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen is the leading candidate to get the head coaching job in Oakland.
A report from our friend Paul Gutierrez of CSNBayArea.com has more information, saying Allen is one of three finalists for the job. It’s down to Allen, Packers linebackers coach Winston Moss, and a “mystery candidate.” McKenzie says the process could end by Saturday.
While we try to think who the mystery man might be, it’s worth noting that the two reports don’t necessarily conflict.
Gutierrez and Mort Scheftersen both say that Marty Mornhinweg is out of the running. Gutierrez says Pete Carmichael has also been informed he won’t get the job. It’s possible the Raiders are zeroing in on Allen, but two other men still have a shot if things don’t progress between Allen and the Raiders.
Hiring Allen would be a departure for the Raiders and new G.M. Reggie McKenzie. Oakland has a long tradition of hiring offensive-minded coaches, and McKenzie hasn’t worked with Allen in the past.

They went into the game knowing he already had 4 concussions. Every coaching staff in the NFL would take note of that and encourage their team to exploit it. It's not like they were even going at the guy's head whenever he was tackled. They were simply encouraged to tackle him as hard as possible knowing that he might have to get taken out of the game if he was slammed hard enough. Big fucking deal. It's football, people.</font>

It's not the tackling that is the issue. It's the act of going out there with the intent of giving someone a serious injury. Period. It doesn't matter their strategy, if they aimed for the head or not. When you say your biggest thing was "to take him out of the game" based on his history with concussions there isn't any question on what you're trying to do.

Let's pretend the Niners put a bounty on Eli Manning's leg. Everyone was supposed to try and take out his leg.
Fucking disgraceful act by the 49ers trying to take out Eli's leg. Players should be suspended the entire season next year for that. There's no place in football for that. Fucking sickening.

<font color=goldenrod>Anybody in the tri-state area...if you can figure out who's talking in this audio clip you might be able to win Super Bowl tickets tomorrow. Mike played this question all day and nobody knows who the fuck it is. My first guess was Trent Dilfer for some reason but somebody already guessed it and got it wrong:

<font color=goldenrod>Don't get me wrong, it was a dumb comment to make and it reflects poorly on you as a person for actively wanting to get somebody out of the game via injury. My contention is just with the claim that they should be suspended. They simply pointed out that hitting him hard (and clean) might be able to take him out of the game and put the Niners on their 3rd string returner. Scummy comment? Absolutely. But they didn't violate any rules. If they get suspended over that then where was D'Angelo Hall's suspension for openly saying he was going to target Romo's broken ribs and punctured lung? The intention was exactly the same.
I do think the NFL will need to be even more strict with their concussion policies next season, though. Williams has had 4 this season, which is pretty crazy. In addition to the current protocol, I think you should have to go on IR if you get multiple concussions during the season. It might be a bit much and I know everybody reacts to concussions differently, but I just don't see how playing with more than one concussion in such a short time span could be a good idea.</font>

I was one of the few advocating for Tynes to get a 3rd crack at it. Glad it worked out.
While he's had some clutch kicks over the years, he's also missed a fair share - including the near meltdown in Green Bay. I like Tynes and the Super Bowl being indoors is a plus but with one drive to go I'd still probably feel a lot more comfortable getting the ball down by 4 than I would by 3 or less. <font color=goldenrod>Gronk missing the game was never going to happen, but high ankle sprains nearly always take an eternity to heal. He'll still be a threat especially in the red zone, but he might not be able to grab all the extra yards after the catch that he normally gets.
Funny part was Belichick was probably being vague about Gronk's injury on purpose...he never tips his hand on any potential injury, hence why half of his roster is listed as Questionable every week. Can't imagine he's too thrilled about Gronk's dad spilling the beans.</font>

Yeah the O-line on the Pats are going to be a big factor in next week's game.

Yeah almost a complete swap of roles in comparison to the 2008 SB. In 2008, Pats barely squeaked by the Giants in the regular season, Giants were mostly quiet and focused on the game, and the Pats were the ones doing the trash talking.
Fast forward to now and its almost a complete reverse. Giants barely squeaked by in the season meeting, Giants trash talking the most, Patriots mostly quiet and focused on the game.
Biggest differences is Patriots give up an experienced defense for one that's more hungry to prove they belong while the Giants have moved away from a dominate rush attack to a more pass attack.

They have to be able to back it up or else they're going to wind up looking like idiots.
As much as I'd love for the Giants to win it easily and break the 4 year streak of competitive Super Bowls, I can't see how this doesn't go down to the wire. <font color=goldenrod>It's a tough call, but I think the only way the Pats have more "pressure" on them to win is because it's the same team they lost to 4 years ago. But even at that, anybody being realistic knows that 18-1 isn't going to magically go away with a Pats win tomorrow. You know Brady and Belichick are going to use it as motivation, but 4 years ago is a long time in the NFL. The teams are totally different.
I've heard a lot about how Brady and Belichick's legacy will be hurt big time with another SB loss. I don't really see it. 3 SB rings and 5 SB appearances in 11 years is insane any way you slice it. Their spots in Canton are already reserved no matter what. I'd make the argument that Coughlin and Eli's legacy has more at stake. A win would make Coughlin a definite HOFer (2 rings, 4 Conference title games, great overall record, successfully built 2 franchises) and Eli would be in a position to get in with a couple more good statistical seasons. Pretty crazy.</font>

:D Martin made it to the Hall.
Really loved that guy as a player and hated when he left as part of the Parcells deal for the Jets.
Not completely shocked at Carter and Reed being left out because for some strange reason the Hall doesn't value WRs as strongly as everyone else does. Usually the players to get most of the hype are either at the QB, RB, and WR position but the Hall doesn't favor the WRs (or at least the recent batch sans Rice).
Really shocked at Parcells not making it since he was a great coach for multiple teams and his legacy really shines when you consider tomorrow's SB game involves coaches from his coaching tree.

Happy for those who got in. Sad Bettis didn't even make top 10 but can understand with 2 Steelers (Dawson and Butler) and 2 Pitt players (Martin and Doleman) making it where it would run thin in the voting room.
Shocked not one of those WR didn't get in. Figured 1 each the next few years.

<font color=goldenrod>Patriots release WR Tiquan Underwood and sign DE Alex Silvestro off their practice squad. Appearently the Pats want an extra DE to rotate in and out and for special teams.
It sounds really cold at first, but all it really does is confirm that Ochocinco is going to play and that Underwood was probably going to be inactive anyway. I think/hope that he'll get signed to their practice squad to replace Silvestro so that he can still be on the sidelines for the game.</font>

While I cant "argue" anyone who made the Hall....No WR is garbage. All 3 should and will make it. Thought this was Reeds Year. He retired top 3 in all WR stats and has far better numbers than most of the WE wing. Thought he might sneak in this year due not making it in the past, to clear the WE log jam, then making it easier for Brown and Carter.

Both were consistently around 1,000 yards a season their entire career. Martin played almost 2 seasons more games than Eddie George did which shows the discrepency in career yards. I can't say anything for the fumbles but its only a couple fumbles more..

No. I hate all Northeastern and teams west of the Rocky Mountains, but the Giants were half-ass likeable in 07 and the Pats were very unlikeable after Spygate, the "17 points? LAWL" thing, and Randy Moss being a piece of shit. I also can't stand that people will ever consider Eli Manning better than Peyton if he wins this game. Plus, I've grown to like Bill Belichick after watching some of the NFL Films/NFL Network productions (2 part Football Life, NFL Network SoundFX) done on him. Plus, I want a guy I have known since 8th grade to get a Super Bowl ring because that would be pretty friggin' neat.

Goodell and the NFL considering getting rid of the Pro Bowl game if interest drops again and there is no way to improve it to make everyone happy. Even gave a small hint of possibly moving it out of Hawaii since most players seem more interested in the vacation than playing a game.
They already moved it from the week after to now the week before the SB to help generate interest but it hasn't really worked out well.

<font color=goldenrod>Wonder if there's a prop bet on how many roughing the passer calls Brady will get tonight. Considering you can get a flag for doing so much as coughing on him after the ball is released I'd set the over/under at 3. Meanwhile Eli will draw no flags even if he gets pounded after the throw.</font>

LOL. IF you think these are similar, you must think you look like Brad Pitt.
Using the "similar" rankings on PFR is stupid enough.
Looking at the 4th leading rusher of all time, and comparing him him to someone because they were somewhat close over a period is stupid. They base his stats on his career.
I never watched his career and thought "someday this guy will be in the Hall" like most did with Barry Sanders, but when you look at his career its CLEAR he belongs.

Interesting tidbit from the recent Bill Simmons SB preview article.
According to him, Vegas is too afraid to have changed the odds for the SB even though the majority of the bets are for a Giants win due to both Brady winning 77% of all games he's played and it would have killed off all the pay outs expected for the -2.5 Pats and the +3.5 Giants.
The "Who Does Vegas Want To Win?" edge: Supposedly money poured in on Giants +3.5 and Giants +3 for the past 10 days, only they're terrified to move the line to "Pats by 2½" because, if the Pats covered that by three, they'd lose all the Pats -2.5 bets AND all the Giants +3.5 bets (in a repeat of Super Bowl XIII, the most famous gambling disaster in football history)
