The great Trent Dilfer is 81st in game ending drives in case anyone is curious, but that's because he ended the game before it even began just by showing up and putting on his jockstrap.
 Trent Dilfer is wonderful

You are fortunate to have a great QB in Tom Brady. You and I are getting tangled in a matter of semantics. The sentiment is the same: manning doesn't get the job done in the playoffs(when it counts)
He's been to 2 SuperBowls, won 1 SuperBowl, and been in handful of AFC Championship games. It takes more than a QB to win in the playoffs, so to just blow off what Peyton has done because they didn't win the SuperBowl every year is fucking absurd.

It's SUPER BOWL Steele! SUPER BOWL! Two words. You're not representing the South appropriately right now.
I agree with you about how you can't blow off Peyton's accomplishments because he didn't win the SUPER BOWL every year, but let's not forget there was that four year stretch before winning the big one where he got his ass handed to him in the playoffs and could shoulder most of the blame for that because of the way he played.

I think Trent is 81st because he's so humble and doesn't like to take too much of the limelight away from his fellow quarterbacks.

Calling it now, Tebow will be a Jaguar by the end of the day. I'm fine with this because it means Gene Smith will likely quit as GM because he's the one who picked Gabbert to be his guy.

Tebow to Jacksonville would solely be to sell tickets in North Florida.
Ermaximus
03-21-2012, 10:28 AM
That's pretty much why I said he'd be a Jaguar. Khan wants him so he can drive more ticket sales. Smith doesn't want him because he sees Tebow as a distraction. Ultimately the owner gets the final say here, but if Tebow coming to Jax means Gene Smith leaves, I'm fine with it.

That's why it clearly says "Posted Tuesday 20th March 2012" in that post.
The fact that he tweeted that in response to the rumors that the Jets were interested in Tebow still says something about locker room synergy and what it's going to be like when Tebow gets there. Cromartie's feelings aren't any different today than they were yesterday. Guys just won't be so public about bashing him now that he's on the team. Except he didn't say anything about supporting Mark Sanchez as the starting quarterback. He didn't mention Sanchez at all.
It was more a direct shot at Tebow since he talked about how they sell out all their home games already (a shot at Tebow's popularity and the fans he will bring with him since the experts discuss ticket sales as a part of his appeal) and how their second stringers can run their wildcat offense (another shot at Tebow considering the fact that one of the reasons why the experts said the Jets would do that deal is so they could put him in Sparano's wildcat).

Roger Goodell is such a twat. He is trying to big dick his way again, and he continues to bastardize football. Football is a violent game. How long until they start fining/suspending coaches for encouraging players to "whoop their ass" or some other "overly aggressive" encouragement that could lead to a threat to "player welfare or safety". I was watching some clips on ESPN.com and Mort brought up a good point about how the sudden emphasis on player safety and stuff might have more to do with the league wanting an 18-game regular season moreso than actually giving a fuck about the players well being.
Next Big Thing
03-21-2012, 03:38 PM
That sounds like more smoke and mirrors "I'm an expert" bullshit from Mort in my opinion. The current CBA is in effect for the next 10 years. The NFLPA would have to also agree to an 18 game schedule and the players aren't going for it.
I think it's got more to do with the lawsuit former players are putting together, especially since media jackasses like Skip Bayless kept replaying the Saints games against Favre and Warner and trying to imply that the hits they took were bounty motivated and hastened the end of their careers.
I wonder if Payton's suspension is more because he apparently lied and tried to cover it up and less about the actual bounty program? If he was honest about its existence and his knowledge of it, 1 year would be ridiculous.

That's probably what makes it that much more suspect. I believe it would be different if you were talking about a group of defensive backs getting together and having a pool for who gets the most interceptions or linebackers having their own pool for who gets the most sacks or tackles.
Instead, you had a coach promoting a system where players were awarded for "knockouts" and "cart-offs" with "knockouts" being worth more than "cart-offs." It implies something a bit more sinister that goes beyond the nature of the game.
I also think Payton got it worse because apparently the Saints were warned, he allowed it to continue and lied to the commissioner's office about it.

Noted Twitter presence and NFL Network analyst Warren Sapp (@QBKILLA (https://twitter.com/#%21/qbkilla)) tweeted earlier that he knows who snitched on the Saints defense's bounty program (http://deadspin.com/scrutiny-of-the-bounty/). Just Heard Who The Snitch Was
— Warren Sapp (@QBKILLA) March 21, 2012 (https://twitter.com/QBKILLA/status/182543871438364672)
Someone replied, "Shockey...?" And QBKILLA replied "BINGO!" Shockey played for the Saints from 2008-2010. They released him before the 2011 season, dumping money that would have come his way (http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcsouth/post/_/id/18604/why-the-saints-released-jeremy-shockey). He's conceivably the snitch.
Yes, CBS's Mike Freeman says that Shockey is not the snitch (https://twitter.com/#%21/realfreemancbs/status/182549760270532608), but, then again, Freeman doesn't say who the snitch is, and he wouldn't be in a position to know conclusively who the snitch isn't unless he knows who the snitch is.
Alas, we're then back in a position where we're stuck trusting Warren Sapp's sources. God have mercy on us all.

Its not wrong to have a different opinion, but when they are as illogical as yours then that is the problem. You are just trying to cherry pick stats to downgrade Manning due to some random issue you have with him.

 Jets if they get Tebow because then the whole debate of Sanchez vs Tebow is going to be a lot worse than it was in Denver and  if the deal is dead because the Jets forgot to read.
$5 million ends up being the snag and its due to the Jets just agreeing to the deal without actually reading the trade contract. They thought they would just get Tebow (and a pick) while just giving up 2 picks but instead they also have to pay cash to Denver.
According to ESPN, the Rams are the front runners to get Tebow and already have a trade deal in place if the Jets deal is voided.

If Rex gets the defence up and running again consistently then I can see this working. If they go with a Sanchez and Tebow partnership, which is what it looks like, then I can see them confusing the hell out of other teams, as Sanchez is fantastic with play action, and we've all seen what Tebow's capable of in the shotgun. I'm not saying they'll put up a lot of points necessarily, but they'll definitely keep drives alive, which is what the Jets need to thrive. With a full off season this year they can get back to putting in some complicated plays/schemes and get the Jets back on track. The lockout fucked them up and they dealt with it poorly.

This may be difficult to digest given Peyton Manning's highly publicized neck injury, but the Broncos believe he may be less of a health risk as an every-down quarterback than Tim Tebow.
It was Tebow's rib and sternum injuries suffered during the Broncos' 45-10 playoff loss at New England in mid-January that convinced management to rethink its quarterback position, according to NFL sources. The result was the Broncos' pursuit of Manning, the acclaimed free-agent quarterback, who despite missing all of last season with a neck injury was signed Tuesday to a five-year, $96 million contract. On Wednesday, the Broncos traded Tebow to the New York Jets.injuries..yeah..thats the ticket...oh wait..

Why is that weird? Manning was one of the most durable QBs in NFL history for years. He had one neck injury. If they think he's all healed, I don't see what's so crazy about them thinking he's less of a health risk than a running QB who suffered multiple injuries in his last game during his first year as a starter.

Unless Denver gets a serious upgrade at Center and maybe both Guards, it's going to happen. Tebow did make the line look bad sometimes by holding the ball too long, but his ability to run usually hid the fact that anytime there's a blitz up the middle Walton and Beadles can't stop shit. Peyton doesn't have that mobility and he's going to get hit. A lot.

A Denver Broncos fan died on Monday, before he had to see his beloved team sign one of his least favorite players.
According to his obituary (http://www.columbiatribune.com/news/2012/mar/21/jim-driver-1933-2012/?obituaries) in the Columbia Daily Tribune, 78-year-old Jim Driver "wanted out" before he had to see Peyton Manning don a Broncos jersey. This is the lead paragraph from that obit:
James H. "Jim" Driver, 78, of Eagle, Colo., formerly of Columbia, passed away Monday, March 19, 2012, at South Hampton Place in Columbia after a brief illness. An avid Broncos fan, he abhorred Manning and evidently wanted out before a deal was done.

a) Knowing your team of *professionals* tried to dish out career/health threatening injuries for extra money = year suspension. Also, people saying this is "too severe" of a punishment, as he's being made an example of in light of all the concussion talk.
b) Knowing your team of *students* gave out worn jerseys for extra tattoos = loss of job. Also, people saying the punishment was not severe enough and the school should suffer the "death penalty", thus losing the ability to even have a football team because of it.
I know the leagues are different, but something has to be said for our sports culture when college kids doing something stupid for money or benefits is seen worse than people who are supposed to be pros getting extra cash to try and hospitalize another man.

I don't believe pro athletes are overpaid. If you consider how much money they make for their team, league, and companies they get pretty fair payment. Remember, for every $10,000,000 contract there is a guy making a 10th of that or less depending on sport.

If you break it down even further, only 3 to maybe 4 years would be considered their prime earning years which is why a majority of startng RBs try to get that mega deal as early as possible into their career.
Forgot to add a little tidbit of news with the earlier post but according to today's Mike and Mike in the Morning's show, the number of players to get suspended and/or fined from Bounty-gate could reach the 40s to 50s range. Yeah that sucks. Especially since rookie contracts are less now under the new CBA and if a good back holds out in year 4 or 5 of his deal he'll be made to look like a bad guy. Plus, even after that contract expires the team can just put a franchise tag on him for the next 3 seasons. By the time he's an unrestricted free agent, he's been used up.

I wonder what "expert" came up with those figures. Not digging at you Smelly, it's just over these past couple of weeks it's been glaringly obvious that these guys don't know any more than we do about what's going on in the NFL. I only trust IncarceratedBob now.
They'll probably suspend guys like Vilma who were clearly the ringleaders, but if that many players were suspended it would create huge headaches. Like, it wouldn't necessarily be justice if current players like Scott Fujita were fined or suspended but then you have a potential hall of famer like Darren Sharper escaping punishment because he's retired. What do you do, add a year on the amount of time that must pass before Sharper is eligible?
Are players who weren't on the team the last two seasons going to be suspended for their participation three years ago before Saints officials were warned or lied to the NFL? What about teams like the Broncos who sign free agents from that team like Tracy Porter. If Porter gets suspended for half a year, would the Broncos be able to get out of that deal?
I just think it would be really hard to custom tailor punishment for 50 guys and still make it fair across the board. I believe punishing the coaches and the known organizers on the players side will probably be enough. I doubt anyone who ever played a down on that defense during that time will get served.

If Dick Durbin has this judicial hearing and calls Greg Williams to testify, won't they make him document every bounty system he ever implemented? Won't that drag the Redskins into this and make the commissioner have to open them up for review? Shit might hit the fan.

The deal with the Saints is more about them blatantly lying to the NFL about stopping the bounty system.
Yeah, I get that, but my point was that this is being treated like this is a frivolous and overly punitive punishment for a guy who knew about and lied about stopping an institution that *encourged* people to ignore safety of other players on opposing teams as opposed to knowing and just not telling that some of your players sold some autographs. No steroids, no cheating, no bounty system... just extra benefits for a few student athletes.
You're hearing a lot about how "violence is part of the game... bla bla bla..." and that this isn't as disgusting as it sounds, and that the only reason why Peyton got a year suspension instead of a few games is because of all the concussion heat about in the league right now and someone like a Manning or a Favre being a target for pass rushers looking for bonus dollars. Almost as if the thought is "yeah, it's bad, but it's not THAT bad."
This, as opposed to Tressel possibly knowing and not telling that some of his students traded autographs and clothes and jerseys and shit like that in exchange for getting some ink done and a little cash. People treated that as if Ohio State were the goddamn devil, an unconscinable black eye to the sport, and that just asking for the resignation of the coach and suspending players for games and losing future scholarship spots and vacating wins wasn't nearly enough.
There seems to be an imbalance in that logic - that promoting a system of injuring people for extra cash isn't nearly as bad as turning a blind eye to a couple kids ebaying their signature - and I was merely pointing that out.

I swear, I am going to try my hardest to get into football this year. Now that I understand how the game works, learning the players and their roles is the hard part.
Kinda torn though, both reasons I watched the Colts are now gone. :( Still going to support them but really going to hope Peyton does well elsewhere.

Sanders and Manning. I tend to find a player I like and then cheer for the team they are on. Happened with Hasek in the NHL before he retired. Not likely to happen here as I don't feel the connection I did with Hasek in the way I idolized the man.

Maybe you've got different sources than me, but based on what I've read and in my humble opinion, I don't think very many people outside of the Saints and a few idiot former players are that opposed to the punishments. Also, most analysts I've heard attribute the severity to the fact that he continued to allow the program to exist and lied to the Commissioner's office moreso than potential player lawsuits or who were targeted.

I don't believe pro athletes are overpaid. If you consider how much money they make for their team, league, and companies they get pretty fair payment. Remember, for every $10,000,000 contract there is a guy making a 10th of that or less depending on sport.
a tenth of that 10,000,000 is still 100,000 which is under the league minimum i believe... so no, noone should feel sorry for nfl players saying they dont get enough money because if they manage their money right, they will be set for life

I hear a lot of people complain about how much athletes make, so if you are so opposed to how much they make: don't watch it, don't buy tickets, don't buy clothes, don't do shit, and ask others to do the same. I will say that I have no clue how these MLB teams afford the contracts because only like 8 teams actually put asses in seats.
Where else are they going to make that sort of money though? Even if they made $250,000 a year, that's far more than what most of them could get with their communication or kinesiology degrees. The reason why they pay them so much money is because it adds to the appeal of the sport. It makes the game appear 'larger than life' when you see these physical freaks who make unbelievable amounts of money beat up each other. Without the huge contracts the big sports franchises don't look any better than Major League Soccer or some other second rate organization. All it is is a really ostentatious marketing gimmick.
James Steele

Yes, the owners of these teams shell out millons upon millions in contracts just for marketing. That is why they did it from the beginning.
Then Free Agency came along and they opened up Pandora's Box.
Obviously there's a lot more to it than that, but I do think that's one facet of it which has evolved in the last 20-30 years. I'm talking about in terms of Free Agency more than anything else. Your teams signs someone like Alex Rodriguez or Julius Peppers to an absurd amount of money, which in turn brings a bunch of attention to the team because he appears like a much watch player due to how much money was spent on him.

Pats and Chad Ochocinco's agree on a restructuring deal which saves the team $2 million and keeps Ochocinco on the team for next season.
Similar to when Belichick apologized for spy-gate during the annual owners meeting, Sean Payton is expected to apologized in front of all the owners and provide a lot of information in regards to bounty-gate.
Cowboys and Redskins file grievances against the NFL in regards to salary cap penalties issued to both during last season's uncapped year. Those were the only 2 teams to break the "gentleman's agreement" where no team would go over the expired cap while a new CBA was being worked on.

I don't get all the Mark Sanchez doubt/ hate. He's gone to two AFC title games and statistically he's improved every year. If you look at Eli's numbers in his first four years in the league and compare to them to Sanchez's, they're very similar . Hell, Eli's statistics were worse than Mark's in the season they won the Super Bowl and he was named game MVP.
He's no Matty Ice, but I think in a couple more years, Sanchez will be a very good QB in this league.

I think they're about the same. Sanchez would probably play better in the team environment the Ravens have. Lewis and Suggs do nothing but praise Flacco (like after Ed Reed's comments got blown out of proportion), while Sanchez gets pissed on by anonymous teammates and the Jets bring in arguably the most popular player in the game in Tim Tebow to be his back up.

Rule changes for next season include all turnovers to be reviewable by the booth similar to TD calls. Big reason was the refs having to over turn the calls (52%) than were right (48%) and to save on challenges done by coaches.
Other rules changes: a team will lose a down for illegally kicking a loose ball; too many men on the field becomes a dead ball foul; and a player receiving a crackback block is now considered a defenseless player and will result in a 15-yard penalty.
Not passed were proposals to have the booth official handle video reviews rather than the referee, and outlawing the horse-collar tackle made on quarterbacks in the pocket.
So basically another ten-fifteen minutes of reviews during a game.

Yes but if the Bills proposed rule passes it will save time.
Bills Proposed that the reviews to be done by the MEN UPSTAIRS like in college. Would remove any motivation for Refs to not want to change their own call, and would save time as it would immediately get review upstairs without waiting on refs getting around.

Wonder why they didn't approve the booth official doing reviews. I think college football has gotten it right with how they do the reviews/challenges.
I think Peyton Manning leaving Indianapolis officially marks the beginning of the end of the New England/Indianapolis/Pittsburgh monopoly that has dominated the AFC for the last decade. I guess you could say it started last year when he was out for the season. Those three teams have gradually become more and more lethargic while the NFC continues to gain talent and energy. I wouldn't be surprised if a team from out of the blue took over the AFC next season, although no one really comes to mind right away.
The problem with the AFC is that there are a bunch of nothing franchises in that conference. The NFC on the whole has a better quality of teams in terms of city population and fan base. I would probably send Chicago or Washington to the AFC, swap them with Cincinnati or Tennessee or some team like that to even things out a bit. It's just difficult to picture Cleveland, Houston, or most of those other mid to lower tier teams in the AFC as ever really being long term powerhouses.

I think Denver could be poised to become a top team. If Elway can get a couple more good young pieces on defense in the draft (namely a DT and CB) as well as a QB to develop, the Broncos are a young enough team all around to be near or even at the top of the AFC for years. The key will be finding that developmental QB to sit behind Manning and take over 3-5 years from now after he retires. They may not be able to make a real run this year as Peyton comes in and adjusts and gets back in shape, but 2013 may be their best shot
